Sometimes it’s hard to stay away from harmful chemicals, especially in a world where chemicals are used for almost everything, especially cleaning. Harsh chemicals can cause all kinds of serious complications if inhaled, ingested, or applied to the skin.

Complications

When people purposefully or unintentionally come into close contact with certain chemicals, there can be many problems that arise. For example, if applied to the skin, these chemicals can cause itching and irritation, and on some cases even severe burns. Drinking or eating these products can make things even worse, sometimes even leading to death.

Green Cleaners

There are actually many ways to avoid contact with these chemicals. One is by choosing the green approach. In the market for cleaning products today, one can find all different sorts of products that do not contain any harmful materials at all. This is a huge relief for many people who are worried about the potential harm these chemicals could be doing to their bodies.

Some of these alternative cleaners work just as well as the leading chemical brands yet do not pose a threat to people’s health. Because of this, it is wise to invest in these types of products. They do tend to be a little more expensive, but safety and health should always come first.

Chemical Warning Signs

Chemicals can be especially hard to avoid in the workplace, more so in jobs with a lot of exposure to these materials. In places like this, it is important to always use proper warning signs to denote where hazardous chemicals are located and to avoid those areas at all cost. If these precautions are taken, one can easily stay safe at work even around harmful chemical products.

Masks and Ventilation

Sometimes it is impossible to avoid using chemical based cleaners and whatnot. If this is the case, one should always make sure to wear a protective mask and gloves to avoid exposure. Opening a door or window and making sure the area in which a person is working is properly ventilated is also very important, as breathing in toxins like this can cause a lot of damage.

Buying Organic

Many farms and food producing companies nowadays use all kinds of preservatives and harsh chemicals in their foods to try and keep them fresher for longer. Unfortunately, these products can often be very unhealthy to consume and lead to a lot of problems if too much of them are ingested. Buying organic foods that have not been processed at all can solve this problem. Organic foods are chemical free and much better for the body than non-organic items.

Better Safe Than Sorry

In the end, it is always better to be safe than sorry when dealing with harmful chemicals. If it is possible to avoid them, it is best to do so, either by buying green products or using the proper protection from their toxins. When young children are around, this is especially true because their immune defenses and organs are not nearly as strong as those of adults. This means they cannot fight of toxins and harmful poisonous substances as easily as older individuals. Often times kids do not even know what they are getting into, and so it the adult’s job to protect them.

It is ultimately the sole responsibility of each individual to take care of his or her own body. Sometimes that means going out of the way to avoid harmful chemicals or other destructive substances that can cause illness, injury, and even death. If all the right precautions are taken, it is completely possible to live a safe and healthy life in a chemical filled world.

We try to be more green and ecologically sound in most areas of our lives these days and are constantly thinking about how we can become more environmentally friendly with our every day living, but can these sorts of ideas also be applied to our holidays too?

It’s perhaps an area that we tend to think can’t be done in an eco-friendly way at all, but it’s worth challenging that notion, because believe it or not, something as exciting as a cruise holiday can be green and environmentally sound too.

How individual states protect their coastlines

For a state such as Alaska, cruises can have the potential to cause much in the way of ecological damage. Therefore, they have put in place measures which will help their coastlines stay safe from problems now and in the future.

Any ships that want to travel along the coast there must have a permit to do so. Not only that, but they must meet strict guidelines with regard to water and air pollution and must also adhere to strict principles with regard to the dumping of fuel, water and food wastage. Their engines must be ecologically sound and have reduced carbon emissions and they must not be used when a ship is in port.

The problem of fuel and energy consumption

As you would imagine, a cruise liner needs an enormous amount of fuel to be able to get it to travel the many thousands of miles it makes on every single journey. These liners effectively carry the equivalent in people of the population of a small US town.

Royal Caribbean Cruise lines have taken the decision to use bio-diesel on board their ships, coupled with this is the fact they use electric gas and some steam turbine engines on their Radiance liners which can effectively reduce emissions by as much as ninety eight percent.

Many of the top cruise liners are now thinking about proactively changing the design and build of their ships to make them more energy friendly and eco-sensitive. Some ships, such as the ones on the Celebrity Cruise line are being built with items like solar panels on them to generate green energy and provide the lighting. It actually works out to be a fifty percent reduction in energy consumption.

Norwegian Cruise and Disney Liners make good use of their cooking oil once it can no longer be used in the kitchen. Norwegian Lines give their waste oil to farmers to help them along with fuel costs, whilst the Disney Liners take their waste oils and use them to power the machinery on their own private island. This effectively saves around eight thousand gallons of oil a year.

Cruise liner travel

One of the most forward thinking changes that has been made is to the hull of the ship, which might not seem the most obvious place to start, but actually is.

During the manufacture and build of the liner, it is painted with a special kind of silicon paint which means that it can glide and cut through the water much more easily, thus using much less fuel than it normally would.

Some liner companies like Royal Caribbean Cruises have even gone one stage further with this idea and made their hulls more aerodynamic, which coupled with the use of the aforementioned silicon paint makes them even more fuel efficient.

On board energy

Possibly the biggest drain on a cruise ship’s energy resources is the air conditioning system, which can go into overdrive during the hotter months of the year and needs a considerable amount of power to keep it going.

In fact, to demonstrate exactly how much power it needs, during the winter months, to save on energy, Royal Caribbean Cruise liners actually shut down an entire engine to save resources. The fact they can do this without detriment to travel shows just how much energy an air conditioning system uses to keep passengers cool.

The Holland America line has deployed another tactic to help, by painting the windows of their cabins with a dark film, which effectively helps minimise the heat from the sun which can get into the rooms and thus negates the need to use the air conditioning as much.

Water treatment

As you can imagine, waste water can be a problem for such large vessels and the issue of how to deal with it without causing environmental hazard needs to be addressed.

Again, Royal Caribbean have ploughed many millions of dollars into trying to find a solution to the issue and

have developed an on-board water treatment system, which turns the murky colored waste water into clean water which is, to all intents and purposes, safer than what comes out of a fawcett at home. This water does indeed end up back in the sea, but does not cause any pollution at all.

The Disney Cruise Line takes any water that has been produced from their air conditioning system and uses this to run their on-board laundry service, which is a novel approach to dealing with the problem!

Why these measures are important

In past years, cruise liners have become a very popular way of seeing many different countries throughout the world, without holidaymakers having to continually pack their bags, search for new accommodation and fly long distances. Therefore, it was imperative that ecologically sound holiday travel was developed which would be not only better for the humans on board but also for the delicate marine life and eco-systems in the sea, too. Making travel more environmentally friendly is hugely important if these things are to be preserved for the children of future generations to enjoy. People want to be able to see the world as safely and conveniently as possible without worrying they are storing up problems for the future of the planet. Looking for a cruise liner company that takes into account considerations of build design, fuel economy and how waste products, whether they be water or oil, are recycled after their use can go a long way to helping the environment and helping you as a holidaymaker feel better too.

As the 13^th child in a family of 14 children, Holliday learned the value of craftsmanship, repurposing and enhancing the beauty of all things old. 2 Red Hens Studio, based in Greenwood Village, Colorado strives to bring function and aesthetic innovation for baby, toddler and mom.

How many times, as a mom, do you travel with your children to places that are not accommodating to children in the least? Mechanic shop, doctor's office (yours, not theirs!), DMV.....and what if I told you that setting up shop for your little one in these most awful situations was as easy as carrying a purse? Introducing the Toy Nanny from 2 Red Hens Studio. The most innovative, trendy and useful item that I have run across in a long time!

Check this out. Easiest thing ever!

Step 1: While toys are in the caddy for playtime, lift up the handles and grab together in one hand.

Step 2: Using the other hand, slide the material down the tubing ~ gathering it all together

Step 3: Once the material is gathered, the bag is almost ready to carry.

Step 4: Secure the bag in the middle with the elastic and mod red button closure.

Step 5: Sache over your shoulder and you are ready to go. I've found that if you have a small diaper case and not in need of a full diaper bag, you can actually place it in the center with your toys and then it is one less bag that you have to carry!!!

Easy as pie! And girls.....don't we NEED anything that we own to help us make things easier?!

How cute is this design? Pink lemonade worked with my eye and my style the best, although she does carry 4 other great patterns!

No need to worry about the toys falling out. There are no sides. The opening is at the top and secured with the elastic/button closure. The straps, as well, are secured with a small metal clamp on each side.

SIZE

Bigger is better, right? Always. This toy caddy is a great circumference to accommodate one or two toddlers at play!

As you can also see, there is PLENTY of surface area for toys, books and more!

ADDITIONAL STORAGE

Around the circumference of the toy caddy, the child can play on the entire surface. If you look closely at the above picture, though, there are several mesh pockets that cover the entire surface, creating a second level of storage secured by velcro.

KEEPS BABY CLEAN

Playing on a dirty surface is the fear of any parent. Using the toy caddy, your child can play on the mat with their own toys, while eliminating the exposure of the muck found on the floor while you are getting an oil change...or such!

FINAL THOUGHTS BY MELANIE

I truly love love love this item! I would be very interested in trying some of the other great 2 Red Hens studio products! The quality of the product was impressive, the design was gorgeous and in line with current trends and the ease of use was designed optimally. Since I now own one, I would think that this would be a great gift for someone that is either expecting or has a little one that is at the age in which they can play (probably starting around 4-5 months old while on their bellies.)

I am inspired by the philanthropic ventures that Lori is involved in (which you can read about below) and the way that she pays profits forward. As a Christian and a small business owner, I find this quite admirable!

MY THOUGHTS

I was thrilled when I was approached to receive and review the aer1 filters and Holmes HEPA air purifier. My allergies are HORRIBLE. They were worse when I lived in west Texas and had cats, but even still in Dallas with no cats, my allergies can be intolerable if not properly managed. Even worse, we have two small dogs and with two children, which equals a lot of playdates, we have issues with my friends and their children being affected.

As much as I vacuum and dust, it seems as if someone is affected by allergies within my home and I am so discouraged by that. I was excited to put the Holmes True HEPA Air Purifier with aer1 allergen removing filters to the test. I received four (4) filters, so I tested the filter for 2 weeks with each filter in our living room ~ The most frequented of the rooms in our home.

My youngest sister was coming to visit and I believe that she probably has some of the worst allergies that I have ever encountered, outside of my allergies while I was in West Texas. She was to be my guinea pig. Angela always has asthma and allergy attacks while at my house, so I started the Holmes air purifier that morning with the allergy removing filter , to see if there was any relief in her systems when she came over for dinner. A caveat....I did not make her aware of the new purifier, the filters or the secret test that I was doing on her.

I have had several air purifiers in the past, some of which were quite expensive, as my allergies with cats were almost intolerable, yet I owned three! I have to say that I was a bit skeptical about its effectiveness, but the test was on. Did it work?

YES!!!!!

I was floored. Angela had ZERO symptoms while she was at our home for over four hours! It still stuns me that such a small and sleek unit could be as effective as it was, but it did! Would it work again?

Then again, at our daughter's first birthday party, we hosted nearly 40 guests, of which....again.....no allergies! Absolutely astonishing!!

MY THOUGHTS

I recently received a Mavea Elemaris XL pitcher in green......I really like this water pitcher! When we moved into our house a year and a half ago, we had to purchase a refrigerator. The one that we ultimately chose had French doors and so the water dispenser is on the inside, in a most akward spot, so I find it difficult to fill up a cup with only one hand (ie. when I'm having to hold a child). Although a water pitcher does take up room in the refrigerator, I was quite surprised at how much I loved having one! It was great to be able to pick up the pitcher and fill a glass of water with one hand.

I also liked ...... rather LOVED the pour through lid!!! Still with one hand, I didn't have to remove the top, like other pitchers, to fill the reservoir up. I simply had to place the water pitcher under a steady stream of water and it filled up! LOVE!

The handle was ergonomically correct and therefore was easy to handle while holding and then pouring. The pitcher did not leak when pouring and that was a great plus.

Finally, the new digital filter meter is a huge plus! Set it when you first install a new filter and it will digitally gauge, by the quarter percent, when you need to replace your filter.

Here in North Texas, our water is provided locally by Lake Lavon. I have never had a problem with our water, except for twice a year when the lake turns. I can not only smell, but can taste, when Lake Lavon has algae in it and has turned on its bi-annual cycle. It is disgusting! I have found that not even our expensive refrigerator could eliminate the taste. Surprisingly, though, the MAVEA pitcher DID! Wow!!!! Years of living with the drudge of "that time of year" for our water.....now I don't ever have to worry about that again. Would it be strange to bring it to restaurants with me the next time I go out? Ha!

I would highly recommend this product to anyone in need of a great water pitcher!

I am one of the unfortunate ones ~ I have asthma. Growing up, though, I was asthma free. It was not until I was about 22 or so and living in Lubbock, TX that I collapsed on an outdoor soccer field after having my first, and quite severe, asthma attack. Scared and unable to catch one breath, I had no idea what was happening to me. After I was able to breathe, I went to my doctor the very next day. The authors of Alphabetown USA are Ryan & Nicole Mayer and are both graduates of Rutgers University. Nicole has a background in psychology and education, and Ryan is a former law enforcement officer. The books are illustrated by Russ Simmons, a Creative Director and fine artist whose works can be found in several South Jersey Shore art galleries.

My kids absolutely loved this book! The search for the missing "Z" is a very clever and fun story that Noah truly enjoyed. Amelia, as I mentioned before, only being just shy of a year old, loved the vivid colors and amusing illustrations.

Another great feature of this book, is that after the story is over, there are some short games in the back of the book, including a matching word game with the letter Z, a search and find with the letter Z, and a "what is different" page as well. Also included, is a neat activity CD.

There are two important differences which separates the Alphabetown USA series from other children’s books. First, the books spring from the minds and imagination of the Mayer children. Taking an initial idea and developing a fun story adventure with a strong educational focus on teaching letters and words, the books are always centered on the introduction of everyday situations that will instill this kind of knowledge for their young readers. For example, Ziggy teaches teamwork, Catena shows the importance of being prepared.

A major selling point for me on this series of books, is that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each Alphabetown book is donated to specified charities. The partner charity for Where is Ziggy? is Alex’s Lemonade Stand, for Hannah’s Homework the partner charity is Ronald McDonald House and for Catena Goes Camping, Miracle Flights for Kids.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CHARITY

Since this review was specifically on the Where is Ziggy? book, I will delve a bit into this specific charity partner. A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of the Alphabetown USA Where is Ziggy? book will be donated to the charity, Alex’s Lemonade Stand: Fighting Childhood Cancer One Cup at a Time. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). 5 Ways to Grow Your Business and Save Money by Going Green

Are you looking for ways to cut back on unnecessary spending in your small business’ office space? Maybe you haven’t looked at your budget yet, but there are probably many things you can cut back on to save a few dollars; maybe even a lot of dollars.

Even more, you could actually make your company more environmentally friendly by cutting back on wasteful expenditures; making the endeavor a win-win for both you and Mother Nature.

Cutting back on some of the following five items may require a little getting used to on the part of your employees, but the monetary and environmental benefits are worth the sacrifice.

1. Cut out disposable cups: If you have a water cooler, stop providing disposable cups and purchase every employee a water bottle with the company logo on it to use instead. Although the initial cost of purchasing water bottles will be higher than the disposable cups, the cost will actually be less over the long run, and you will be doing a lot to help cut down on excess waste in landfills.

2. Turn off the lights: If there is no one in a room, ask your employees to shut off the lights. Many businesses leave every light on, all day. This is especially true in break rooms that are usually only used during the lunch hour. Make it a company policy that, if you are the last one to leave a room, you are responsible for turning off the lights. In addition, make sure that you turn off as many lights as possible during non-office hours. This saves money on electricity and cuts back on unnecessary energy usage.

3. Turn up the A/C: Some employees will argue against this, but most office spaces keep their thermostats at ridiculously low temperatures. This is not only uncomfortable for some workers, but it also wastes energy and money. Turn your business’ thermostat up a few degrees and see just how much money you will save. Do the same in the winter months by turning the thermostat down a few degrees.

4. Unplug all unused electronic equipment: This is a lot easier for smaller businesses than larger ones, but it’s another way to save on energy use and costs. When a piece of equipment is not in use (a computer, laptop, copy machine, printer, etc.), keep it unplugged to cut back on stand-by (or vampire) power. You could also plug several electronic devices into a power strip that can be turned off easily with the switch of a button.

5. Cut back on trash bags: Instead of placing plastic liners in every small trash can in the office, keep them bare and empty all cans into one larger lined can at the end of the day or week. This is a doable thing, because most office waste is paper that doesn’t create a mess in trash cans. For food waste, ask your employers to use a designated lined trash can in the break room. If you want to be really green, consider purchasing a few blue trash cans that can be designated as recycle bins.

There is even another benefit of practicing these strategies in your office; you could use the environmental aspect of it to market your company as environmentally friendly. Many people actually seek out green companies to do business with, and most people find companies with green policies to be more responsible and conscientious. So not only could you save money, you could also grow your business!

4 Eco-Friendly Strollers

They don't make a Prius for babies yet, but your Flintstone-style pushing power is definitely a source (or drain) of clean energy, and a good healthy workout at that! Put it to good use with these strollers, strong enough for a mother but made for Mother Earth:

1. Bumbleride Natural Editions

The Natural Edition strollers that Bumbleride manufactures use an exterior fabric containing 50% recycled material. In addition, the seating surfaces are made of a 50% bamboo blend that helps absorb moisture and regulate temperature. Proper diet is essential for healthy people, and it makes a bigger difference to cancer patients. Nutrition is essentially the process by which the body takes in food. The food is needed for growth, and the body uses the energy, vitamins and minerals to build new tissue and recover from surgery and other cancer treatments. It is essential to eat the right types of food because cancer treatment can take a lot of energy from a person. This means that proper diet is even more important to cancer patients.

Three Goals of Nutrition Therapy

Cancer patients should consult their physician about the benefits of nutrition therapy because there is a range of different types of cancer and treatment options. Nutrition specifics may differ for someone who has mesothelioma cancer and someone with breast cancer, for example. Some treatments reduce muscle tone and bone density, which is where adding more protein to the diet may be required.

Nutrition therapy has three major goals.
            -Nutrition therapy provides missing nutrients.
            -Therapy helps patients maintain nutritional health.
            -Further problems and complications are prevented with proper diet.

Mesothelioma treatment side effects can often lead to weight loss, anorexia or cachexia. These are medical problems that often cause patients to lose weight. The problem can be countered with an effective program of nutritional therapy that provides the body with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. According to the National Cancer Institute, some tumors release chemicals that alter the way the body breaks down nutrients. Protein, carbohydrates and fats are especially affected by stomach or intestinal tumors. Patients may even think that he or she is eating enough, but the body may experience difficulty absorbing nutrients from food.

Protein

Protein is an essential building block of muscle and bone tissue, and it is imperative for cancer patients to add more to the diet. Because the body will catabolize muscle tissue in the absence of adequate protein stores, cancer patients may lose weight. Beans, peas, lentils and dairy products are a great source of protein.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are essential, as this is the body’s primary source of energy. There are several things to consider in a diet because not all carbohydrates are the same. The body gets a lot of vitamins, nutrients and phytonutrients from fruits and vegetables. These are the preferred source of carbohydrates. In addition, whole grains are an essential component of a healthy diet. It takes the body longer to digest whole grains. This reduces fluctuations in blood sugar levels and ensures that adequate energy is maintained throughout the day.

Fat

Fat is an essential component of the diet as well, but there are good types and bad types. Most experts agree that adults should include more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in the diet. These are primarily found in vegetable oils and fish. Trans-fats and saturated fats should be avoided.

Eating right is a great way to stay healthy, and it is even more imperative for cancer patients. Proper diets are essential because they provide the body with the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are needed for growth. Cancer patients may undergo treatments, and recovery is facilitated with proper diet.
