Actually this is not about Lollapalooza at all, I just thought maybe I'd get some more hits with that title. Sorry for the lack of posts lately. Like a lot of music bloggers I received a takedown notification because I was infringing on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Obviously I don't want my blog to get me into any trouble. I'm just trying to promote the artists I love. I'm going to continue to try to post stuff I've been listening to, but won't be giving away free MP3s unless it's legal.

Okay, I'm a little obsessed with this album right now. I picked up the CD at Best Buy for only $7.99 and it came with a bonus DVD of videos for every song on the album. This video is directed by Kevin Drew (until I find out more info I will assume it's Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene) Anyway, the video and the song are so beautiful and romantic. Take a look:

FOUR TET LOVES YOU

I can't stop listening to the new Four Tet album There Is Love In You. Kieran Hebden has returned with his first album in five years, and my favorite since 2001's Pause. This album is as close to proper dance music as Four Tet has ever gotten. This is far from club music though. His tunes are built on layer after layer of sound. Each listen you discover something new. It's simple, yet complex at the same time. If my life was a video game, Four Tet would write the soundtrack.

THE UNITS - HIGH PRESSURE DAYS

From time to time we're going to feature some older music that we've discovered that we think our readers might enjoy. Let's start with the now defunct San Francisco band The Units. They were one of the first American new wave bands, and pioneers of "synthpunk" (along with LA's The Screamers). Their sound is definitely influence by art punk like Talking Heads, but with synthesizers instead of guitars. They're also known for their "Punk Under Glass" performance piece in which the band played in a JC Penny storefront window in downtown San Francisco. Punk rock!! Their sound was way ahead of their time and influenced bands such as The Rapture and The Faint over 20 years later.

Surfer Blood is a young band from West Palm Beach, Florida that just released their debut album Astro Coast on Kanine Records, though it's been floating around the interwebs for months now. Surfer Blood are setting the bar high for 2010 with an album full of "classic indie" guitar rock reminiscent of Pavement and Blue Album era Weezer. It's refreshing to hear guitar rock that actually has very smart and memorable hooks. A rare breed in a world of gimmicky rock. I was fortunate enough to see these boys live at Schubas few weeks back. Their live show was fucking spectacular especially for such a new band.

LINDSTROM & CHRISTABELLE: 'BABY CAN'T STOP'

Norwegian DJ Lindstrom has been on my radar for sometime now, but it wasn't until I witness his live set at 2009's Pitchfork Music Festival that I really started paying attention. Know for his almost disco meets IDM (Intelligent Disco Music perhaps?) this collaboration doesn't seem too far-fetched. Lindstrom gets some help from Oslo singer Christabelle on the album Real Life Is No Cool - due out on Smalltown Supersound today. Get a sample of the album with the dance-floor-ready song 'Baby Can't Stop'. This will certainly get him some more mainstream attention.

Also, you're really gonna want to check out this remix by Belgium-based duo Aeroplane. It's a little less disco, and a lot more hypnotic.

BEST ALBUMS OF 2009

Ok. Before we get this whole 2010 thing going, lets take a quick look back at 2009. Some of you may know that I've compiled a best of list for the last few years. I've heard some people say that 2009 was a weak year for music. I think you just weren't paying attention. This was, by far, one of the hardest years to limit to just 10 albums. Therefor I've included 15 of my favorite albums of 2009. These are the albums that I've listened to the most and I believe best represent a wonderful year in music. You'll notice no Animal Collective. Sorry hipsters.

#15. Warm Heart of Africa - The Very Best (Green Owl)

Last years mixtape Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are The Very Best was an amazing mash-up of afro-pop, indie rock, and dance tracks produced by Radioclit with vocals by Esau. Their debut album is more of the same style, only all original. The crossover of African pop to American dance would make Paul Simon proud. I was lucky enough to catch these guys finish off 09's Pitchfork Festival. If you were lucky enough to choose these guys over The Lips, you know they put on one hell of a party.

#14. XX - The Xx (XL Recordings)

This album was quite a surprise to me. With every good band that is doing a shoegazing revival sound, there is 20 more simply

trying to make a buck. The fact that the members were still in diapers when 'Loveless' came out just makes it more impressive. The album is filled with great boy/girl vocals, r&b grooves, trip-hop beats and fuzzy guitars. As my friend Nathan said, this is a perfect rainy-day-morning-commute-album. Makes heading to work in a train that smells like a wet dog much more enjoyable.

13. Music For Men - The Gossip (Columbia)

When I first heard that Rick Rubin was producing the new Beth, Brace, and Hannah album I was pretty excited. I thought maybe this DIY punk trio would get the stateside mainstream success they deserved. Unfortunately we're not ready for a fat girl fronted queer band. Who knew! Fortunately this is their most powerful record to date. The production works great for Ditto's voice. The title track 'Men In Love' is one of the best gay jams of recent years. Thankfully this trio is doing quite well in France and Germany, going both Platinum and Gold respectively. Congrats!

12. Miike Snow - Miike Snow (Downtown)

Miike Snow is a band fronted by North American Andrew Wyatt and Grammy award winning Swedish Producers Bloodshy & Avant. You may know the producers from Britney's 'Toxic', and many other huge pop singles. Their debut album is sort of a dance pop version of indie rock. Beautiful slick tracks accompany Wyatts smooth blue-eyed soul voice. This album is definitely bringing sexy back to indie rock (yep, I really wrote that). Far from a retro sounding soul record, Miike Snow is very fresh and new. Damn this is good.

11. There Is No Enemy - Built To Spill (Warner Brothers)

As long as Built to Spill are making records, they will always be on my year end list. One of those rare bands that continues to release great albums after 15+ years. The sounds that Built to Spill make on guitar always blows me away, and this album features some of their best. This album also features some of Doug's best lyrics including: "One day I'll come home to find you covered in ants 'cause you're so sweet" cheesy perhaps, but makes me smile every time. Perhaps Doug will write greeting cards when he retires, but I hope he never does.

1o. The Ecstatic - Mos Def (Downtown)

I'm sad that this is the only rap album on my list. Though I'm happy it's Mos Def! After two very disappointing albums I was about ready to write this guy off. This album doesn't have any typical party jams, chart toppers, or club bangers. That's what makes it so refreshing and deserving of repeat listens. This album relies on amazing production from some of the best (Oh No, Madlip, Chad Hugo) featuring some great Middle Eastern music samples, and great rhymes from Mos Def. It also sees the return of the amazing Slick Rick. It's albums like this that make me mad when people say they dislike rap. You're racist and/or old.

09. JJ n° 2 - jj (Sincerely Yours)

I don't know a whole lot about this band. I couldn't even find a myspace page, so I didn't link to it. I do know they are from Sweden (a land that continually produces quality music). Now about the music. This album is a clusterfuck of genres. Ambient, pop, hip-hop beats, movie samples, tribal, ect... This may sound overwhelming but it's not. JJ mesh these styles together flawlessly. Definitely don't let the album cover turn you off. Perhaps it's a suggestion, or maybe it's a comparison. I just wish the album was longer. At 26 minutes, the high is over before you know it.

08. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (Slumberland)

This album is just impossible not to love. Seems too many bands are trying to invent something new and fail miserable. What's wrong with perfecting a style that already exists? New York's Pains do just that with their amazing debut album. Pains combine late-80's style shoegazer guitar reverb with the sweet indie-pop vocals reminiscent of Shop Assistants. It's like we've discovered a lost record from some forgotten Glasgow band. I'd hate to write these guys off as some throwback retro act though. This album is short, sweet and simple, yet memorable and catchy as hell allowing for many repeat listens.

07. The First Day of Spring - Noah and The Whale (Cherrytree)

As Neil Sedaka once wrote: breaking up is hard to do. He was right, but then why is that song so damn upbeat? Breakup records are, and always will be a very popular theme is popular music. The First Day of Spring is another beautiful addition to the genre of heart break. Noah & The Whale are a British indie folk band, and this is their third album. I've actually never heard any of their previous albums, but fell in love with this one. It's an extremelly sad album, yet very uplifting and hopeful. The song 'Blue Skies' gives hope to "anyone with a broken heart". Kills me everytime.

06. Bitte Orca - Dirty Projectors (Domino)

I definitely did not like this on first listen. It sounded like a mess of monkeys playing music. I just wanted to understand the acclaim so I kept trying, enjoying it more and more with each listen. Finally, I heard Solange's cover of 'Stillness is the Move' (sad I know), and it really clicked: this is soul music! Sure David Longstreth doesn't have a voice like Otis, but he sings and plays from the heart. Strange time signatures and crazy vocal melodies makes this album exciting and keeps your attention on each visit. I love an album that challenges me as a listener. Like many of my favorite albums Bitte Orca just needed some getting used to.

05. Two Suns - Bat For Lashes (Parlophone)

According to a press release, Two Suns is a reflection on "the philosophy of self and duality, examining the need for both chaos and balance, for both love and pain...". Deep. Bat for Lashes is Natasha Khan. Unlike most women in todays music world she doesn't rely on her sex appeal. Khan has something much more interesting and timeless to bring to the world. Like Kate Bush and Bjork before her she displays her beautiful and unique voice over dark orchestrated pop. This a very intriguing and gracefully crafted album.

04. Catacombs - Cass McCombs (Domino)
32 year old Cass McCombs has the perfect combination of accessible themes with a unique expression and a good sense of humor. Another album that grew on me after repeat listens. This is his fifth album since 2002. I find it strange that artist like Conor Oberst can be called the new Dylan while McCombs is basically ignored. Perhaps Catacombs will help introduce him to the folky singer-songwriter loving NPR audience.

03. Crying Light - Antony and The Johnsons (Secretly Canadian)

I love singers that actually sing in their own voice. Sometimes it's bad, like Dylan or David Berman, but they have something important to say. Other times it's naturally beautiful while sounding completely unique. That's where Antony Hegarty would fall. I had checked out his previous works but really didn't "get it" until being featured on Bjork's 'The Dull Flame of Desire'. Also, after seeing him live earlier this year I was sold. Antony is the real deal. Crying Light explores Antonys relationship with the natural world, giving us one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching albums of the year. Give him another chance, it'll be worth it.

02. Post-Nothing - Japandroids (Polyvinyl)

Unlike some of the other albums on this list, Post-Nothing was instantly likable. Japandroids is Brian King on Guitar and David Prowse on Drums, and they both sing. That's it. Post-Nothing is a little bit garage rock, and a little bit punk rock. It's all killer and no filler at only 8 tracks long. The lyrics aren't profound or deep, and the music isn't reinventing anything. It's just pure energy and fun. I'm glad that bands like Japandroids can see some popularity in the indie scene. I really hope we see more raw acts like this in the years to come.

01. Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear (Warp)

I know, how pretentious and predictable of me to pick Veckatimest. What can I say? I fell for the hype. According to Last.fm I listened to this album more than anything else, so how could I not put it at number one? On their third album Brooklyn-based Grizzly Bear have seemed to perfect their sound. The lush harmonies of vocals and instrumentals blend so well here. Veckatimest sounds instantly classic yet completely brand new. After seeing these guys perform these songs live with the same perfection as the album, I was completely sold. This album is amazing. You might as well listen to it now, because you're gonna hear it talked about for years to come.

It's 2010 y'all! We've got something really special to help bring in the new year. Hurts are an 80's inspired electro-pop duo from Manchester. The track 'Wonderful Life' is a dark melodramatic pop song reminiscent of OMD. Layered vocals and a sweet soulful beat make this song a great repeat offender. The video is great also. Definitely looking forward to hearing more from these guys!

KID CUDI ft. KANYE & COMMON

I gotta admit I was pretty disappointed with Man on the Moon on my initial few listens. His mixtape was hot as shit, but by the time his debut dropped I was already bored with him. It didn't help that 'Day 'n' Nite' was one of the most over played tracks of the summer. Well, his new single 'Make Her Say' is fucking great. A nice reworking of 'Poker Face' by Mr. West, and some fine verses from the always great Common. I'm gonna have to give this album a few more visits.

FREELANCE WHALES

Get ready to fall in love. Freelance Whales are a refreshing new band from New York. Their sound lies somewhere between acoustic and electronic, Arcade Fire and Postal Service, a bit cutesy yet not nauseating. They released their album Weathervanes on iTunes in August. Eventually I'll listen to it. Once I can stop replaying the song 'Starring' over and over.

We'd like to introduce you to Kiss in Cities. This Manchester duo creates 80's style pop (couldn't you tell from the photo?) Their debut single 'U R My Girl' is out on December 14th. The press release calls it "An instant anthem for a generation who feel short-changed by the implausible feminisms of Beyonce and Britney". Right on sista! I like this more and more every time I hear it. Looking forward to hearing more from these kids.

The guys at PMA have been reporting on these guys since the start, but we're a little slow. We also don't like to post stuff we're not sure of. Well Phillys hip-hop/electronica four piece(plus producer Xaphoon Jones) Chiddy Bang just released there debut mixtape The Swelly Express. They say it best:

"The Swelly Express" is the true story of two college kids (Chiddy

and Xaphoon Jones) from Philly who rocked some parties at

Drexel and quickly gained the attention of "the industry". The music

and lyrics were inspired by many boring trips on the Chinatown bus

Fyfe Dangerfield, lead singer and founding member of the amazing Guillemots, is set to release a solo album in early 2010. We got a sneak peak of the record in the form of the song "When You Walk Into the Room". It sounds like he's trying to be more white boy soul on this record, and I'm more than okay with that. The readers have demanded "more American music", so I'd like to feature the young and exciting Yes Giantess. These up-and-comers hail from a small town named Boston. Following in the footsteps of Passion Pit, these guys pump out fun-as-shit pop jams full of synths and child-like singing. This is what happens kids of the 80's, brought up on Michael Jackson and Hall & Oats, grow up and make music. They have only released a couple tracks so far, but they are damn good! No word on a full length yet, but I'm guessing it will be just in time for the 2010's summer festival season.

What to do when you're a band from the "City of Pop" (asinine name given to Liverpool by Guinness Book of Records in 2002) trying to write a well received album? Do what Wave Machines did and combine some Barry Gibb falsetto, some Hot Chip electro nerd rock, and some lyrics about being a bad punk of course! Now, I'm not saying that these boys compare to Liverpool legends like Echo & the Bunnymen, or OMD, but they sure did make a nice album here.

Time for some hip-hop! This mixtape came out way back in January. That's forever ago in the blog world. Since I didn't have a blog back then, I'm going to post about it now.

This Charming Mixtape starts with an amazing
reworking of 'Sabali' by Amadou & Mariam, and jumps right into Kraftwerks 'Computer Love', all with sing/rap lyrics by Brooklyn's own Theophilus London. They leave the best for Crazy Cousinz awesome UK funk track 'Bongo Jam'.

I realize we post a lot of pop music on this blog. Some people might argue we post too much. The thing is, there is just too much damn GOOD pop music being made right now, yet too much TERRIBLE pop music on the charts. (I Gotta Feeling was #1 is TWELVE countries!)

In Gold Styles effort to help reclaim the good stuff, we'd like to introduce The Sound of Arrows. This Swedish duo write and produce their own tracks, design their own packaging, and also create their own videos. They're due to release their debut album on Neon Gold Records (have we mentioned how gay we are for this label!?) anytime now. In the meantime, check out these luscious gems.
