Taking the Society's Bergman Gallery as his text, Perlman undertook an appraisal of the overall space and all of its accoutrements to uncover their peculiar architectural significances. Perlman used distinct shifts and alterations of architectural details like wall height and width, moldings and door handles to render the space and aesthetic of the gallery unfamiliar. In turn these altered surfaces were used to exhibit photographs and text fragments referencing the Renaissance Society, Mies van der Rohe, and the architecture of Ludwig Wittgenstein. This catalogue, designed to appear like a cropping or quotation from a larger study, is more accurately described as an artist's book. Melville's catalogue essay takes us through the exhibit, explicating various details while considering the use of architecture, media and appropriation in postmodern artistic practices.

Von Oben consists of a series of drawings which, in their form, reference a tradition of semi-pornographic cartoons one could find in Scandinavia in the 70s and 80s, in magazines of a kind considered highly inappropriate today; in terms of sexism, racism and a ruthless prejudice against exposed social groups. Today this art form remains not much more than a marginalized rest of low-culture, while the subjects it deals with still flourish, repressed and hardened in our sub-conscious.

Von Oben (from above) is an idiomatic expression in German which means to have a superior attitude to others. In the book, those offenders are instantly and literally punished by heavy objects falling on them from the sky.

Conventional histories of comedy address the verbal comedy presented on stage or screen, or in broadcast media. During the twentieth century, however, there emerged another form of comedy–a comedy of doing rather than saying–that yielded prop-like conceptual objects and gestures of public theater. Termed “concrete comedy” by internationally known artist and writer David Robbins, its origins date from around 1915, with the work of Karl Valentin, a German comedian of stage and screen who also made comic objects, and Marcel Duchamp, who used the art context as a site as for comedy. Concrete Comedy discusses visual artists (Manzoni, Warhol, Cattelan, Kippenberger, among many others) alongside entertainers (Albert Brooks, Andy Kaufman, Robert Benchley, Jack Benny), musicians (The Ramones, The Replacements, Frank Zappa), couturiers (from Chanel to Viktor & Rolf), architects (SITE Architects) and dozens of other comic imaginations. Ten years in the making, this volume is a necessary addendum to the histories of comedy and art.

As stated by Syms “Reference Work is the text I wish we had read prior to opening our business Golden Age. It contains original essays from Marco Kane Braunschweiler and I, the syllabus from the only business class we ever took, summaries from our favorite business books and a collection of resources that we’ve found helpful over the past four years. The book may be interpreted as sarcastic or irreverent, but I hope readers will notice our sincerity. It is difficult trying to enter the business world as a right brain thinker, not because those skills aren’t essential, but because that world is structured around hard metrics and art is difficult to quantify. Reference Work is intended to demystify some of the day-to-day operations of a cultural business and expand the definition of commercial success.”

The text was edited by Zachary Kaplan. The book was published with the assistance of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on the occasion of We Are Here: Art & Design Out of Context, an exhibition curated by James Goggin.

In 2008, German artist Christoph Keller traveled through Morocco with his own version of Wilhelm Reich’s cloudbuster machine to engage local people in the age-old process of conjuring rainstorms. This artists book, which combines cinematic flip-book elements with more straightforward photo documentation, is a record of Keller’s project. Small color photographs depict the cloudbuster machine being built and used to make rain in four different locations. The only explanatory text appears on the book’s cover, which in this case is printed in English.

Adam Pendleton composes formal templates in which he slots information, shifting language, forms and images into an arena of artistic inquiry. Part 1: A book by Steffani Jemison based on a poem commissioned from Houston-based spoken word performers Truth and Greatness. The narrative represents the creative process of the poets as they write, including their conversations about language, politics, street literature, the art world, Wu-Tang Clan. Part 2: A third-person autobiography written by Truth and Greatness about Steffani.

Steffani Jemison is an artist and writer. Recent screenings and exhibitions include Spaces Gallery, Cleveland; Unspeakable Projects, Chicago; Eel Space, Chicago; the UCLA Wight Biennial, Los Angeles; the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; and UnionDocs, Brooklyn.

Michael (“Truth”) Graham is a poet and emcee. For two years, he co-organized the Secret Word Poetry reading series in Houston, Texas, which brought dozens of nationally-recognized urban poets and musicians to Houston. He has performed individually and in collaboration with Khorey “Greatness” Smith at poetry slams in Texas, New Mexico, and Philadelphia.

Khorey (“Greatness”) Smith is a writer and artist. As a poet, he has performed individually and in collaboration with Michael “Truth” Graham at poetry slams in Houston, Albuquerque, and Philadelphia. He is the 2010-2011 president of Poetry and Politics, a performance team at Texas Southern University.
