How To Put A Goldfish To Sleep Using Clove Oil To Treat Them?

Sometimes there will come a time where you will need to put your goldfish to sleep to treat them. For this you can use clove oil which will put your fish to sleep so you will be able to treat any goldfish diseases or bacterial infections they may have. Myself, on larger fish such as koi I like to put them to sleep so I can treat the infected area directly. For most people, especially if your worried in doing this procedure I would stick with the normal fish medications that you can buy for treatment.

The reason that you put the goldfish to sleep is so they won't feel anything during the treatment and so they will be easier to handle. For people who have large goldfish or koi that have ulcers I strongly suggest putting your fish to sleep to treat it. By doing so you can get a greater handle on the issue by applying treatment directly to the area.

How To Put A Goldfish To Sleep With Clove Oil:

1. Get a bucket and fill it with some water from your aquarium or pond.

2. Catch your fish and place them in the container.

3. Introduce your fish to the container and add in your clove oil. For this procedure you should add 10 drops per 1 gallon of water. Within 5 minutes or less you should see your goldfish starting to lye on its side. Wait till he is fully asleep before your pick them up.

After your fish is put to sleep using clove oil, now you can begin treatment on your fish. After your done treating your goldfish you will need to revive the fish and wake him up. To do so you will need to pick up your fish and place them by a heavily aerated section in your aquarium or pond. In your aquarium you can place his head right over the bubbles of an air stone and gently rock the fish's head back and forth so it's gills open. This will allow oxygen to enter and slowly start to revive your fish. This can take up to 10 minutes for your goldfish to be completely revived. During this stage don't worry, you will see its gills open and shut so it's still alive.

Putting a fish to sleep is highly recommended in cases where fish has ulcers and is needed during surgical removal of tumours. I know it's always scary the first time trying new things but I've done this many times and I have yet to lose a fish from putting them to sleep (knock on wood)with clove oil. So whenever your fish get sick you might just have the right stuff in your home to put them to sleep. Give it a try! Just make sure you don't accidentally overdose on clove oil, as this can kill your fish with larger amounts.

Spring has arrived and when should you start feeding pond fish in spring in your garden pond? What people should do is only start feeding their pond fish when the water warms up past 55 degrees farenheit. People need to remember that your fish need to come out of hibernation over winter. Their immune system is still low and vulnerable to diseases and parasites. As the water warms your fish metabolism will increase. People should start feeding their goldfish a wheat germ based food that is easy to digest in spring and low in protein. When the water is below 55 degrees farenheit the metablism of the fish slows down that is why you should only start feeding fish once water warms up past that.

People should also have a thermometer on hand so they can check the temperature of the water in their pond come spring. I know after a long winter people are very eager to start feeding their goldfish and getting their pond operational again. I know because I am one of those people. Goldfish Pond- Cleaning and Pond Spring Start Up Tips

Now that spring has arrived your going to need to clean your goldfish pond and get it already for the pond season. Pond maintenance is needed and you will need to clean your goldfish pond of any debris and organic matter that has decomposed over winter. If you did not cover your goldfish pond last year with a pond netting you will need to scoop up all the leaves that are decaying. This decaying matter is prime areas for when goldfish diseases and parasites occur. Remove all the sludge at the bottom of your goldfish pond to prevent diseases and parasite outbreaks.

For small ponds you can completely clean your pond rinse it out and refill it. If you have goldfish in your pond simply remove them and place them in an indoor aquarium until you finish cleaning your pond. It would be best to keep them in a fish tank for about 3-4 days before you re-introduce them to your pond. This would be a great time for you to observe your fish and look for any signs or symptoms of diseases and parasites. If you notice any sick fish treat them as needed.

For any pond plants that you have in your pond such as water lilies and other marginals, this is a great time to divide them. Simply divide and re-pot your pond plants and fertilize them as well. When you clean your pond for spring this is the ideal time for dividing your pond plants and water lilies and you can place them where you want in your garden pond.

For larger ponds which you may not be able to drain your pond and clean it completely make sure you remove as much as the sludge as possible. Do a partial water change and remove about 25% of the water.

Now that your pond is cleaned out your going to need to start up your pond for the season. Now you can hook up your pond pump and filter and get the water circulating. Be sure to add beneficial bacteria to get your biological filter working properly. Also add water conditioner to remove chlorine from the water to make it safe for your goldfish.

In spring is when people tend to have problems with algae blooms with their goldfish pond. After you have finished cleaning your pond and hooking up your pond pump and filter add a bag of barley to your pond. A bag of barley right by the pond pump will help reduce the the chance of algae. Barley works great for algae control in ponds. Simply add barley straw, barley extract or pellets in your pond at the beginning of spring and this will help your pond stay clear.

After you have cleaned your pond and started it up for spring most people want to start feeding their fish. Remember you can only start feeding your fish when it warms up to about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Some fish foods on the market today you can feed your fish at 45 degrees but general rule is about 55 degrees you can start feeding your goldfish. When you do start feeding your goldfish in your pond start feeding them a wheat germ food that fish can easily digest. Feed them once a day and then as summer approaches you can switch fish foods later. Remember goldfish in a pond don't really need to be fed, their is plenty of food in the pond for them.

Now that your goldfish pond is all cleaned out and ready for the season you can start to enjoy it. To fully enjoy your water garden make sure you have enough pond plants, water lilies and floating aquatic plants. Having your pond about 70% full of plants will help keep your water crystal clear all summer long. Make sure you have great pond filter as well as consider buying a UV sterilizer for your pond will help keep your water quality perfect all summer. Goldfish Care Information Blog Hits 100,000 Visitors

Wow, what a last year and a half! My Goldfish Care Information Blog hit 100,000 visitors here today on March 31, 2009. This goldfish blog has come a long way as it first began September 15th, 2007. I would like to thank everyone for visiting my goldfish blog for all their questions they have concerning goldfish care and how to treat against various goldfish diseases and parasites. I consider this a goldfish milestone! My goldfish blog started off with mimimum traffic and now has become one of the sites to go to for questions concerning goldfish care and how to treat them. Now I get about 500 hits a day with up to 1000 page views. If this traffic keeps up I will double the traffic and get close to 200,000 visitors in one year. It's crazy as I remember when I first started there was minimum traffic but now lots of people have visited this goldfish blog and there are many websites and blogs linking back to it.

I would like to thank everyone for coming and visiting my goldfish blog over the last year and a half. I am just glad that I am able to help you with your questions and hope that you all have learned a thing or two about goldfish. This goldfish blog wouldn't have grown like it did without all of you asking questions, so thanks and I look forward to helping many more people here in 2009. I am very happy with the results I've had with this blog and the feedback I get as I truly enjoy helping you with all your questions. As you can tell, this hobby is a real passion of mine and a hobby that I really enjoy. I'm just happy that this blog has been able to help so many people with their goldfish.

Do Goldfish Need An Air Pump In Fish Bowl or Aquarium?

Do goldfish need an aquarium air pump? Yes and no really. If you want your goldfish to live a long healthy life then go with an air pump. Having an air pump in the aquarium or goldfish bowl helps in so many ways. It creates gas exchange and helps add oxygen to the water. Some people believe that goldfish will live just fine without an air pump and that may be so. For instance if you have an aquarium and have a filter running this helps add oxygen to the water. The water flowing in forces oxygen into the water increasing the oxygen level that fish need. Goldfish need oxygen too. For instance on hot sunny days in goldfish ponds you may see your fish coming to the surface gasping for air. This happens especially when you have green algae blooms. What you need to do is add oxygen quickly to the water. Spray a hose directly into the water will help increase the oxygen level. In warm hot sunny days the oxygen level is low as the temperature of the water is high. In cold water is where you see an abundance of oxygen available. There is more oxygen in cold water then there is warm water. So in reference to aquarium air pumps they are highly beneficial to a properly functional goldfish tank.

Goldfish need plenty of oxygen and an aquarium air pump is highly recommended as it helps reduce stress too. As we all know with stress can come sickness and diseases so it is always best to take all necessary steps to keeping goldfish healthy. I mentioned about a goldfish pond in the summer just to explain a little more on this subject. As far as goldfish bowls and aquariums are concerned it is to your best option to go and equip your fish tank with an air pump. The agitation that happens at the surface of the water will add oxygen to your fish tank. This will create a healthier home for your fish and will reduce stress. If people are planning on having good luck taking care of goldfish then I would suggest not to go and try and keep them in a goldfish bowl. It's just too small and in order to have great luck with fish keeping I would get all the proper equipment needed such as air pump, filter and aquarium gravel. With basically everything in life things need oxygen to live and goldfish are much the same. Also beneficial bacteria in your filter need oxygen to live and reproduce. Air pumps can help in so many ways in keeping an aquarium healthy. I hope this helps give you more of an idea on why people should really have an air pump in their fish tank. Your goldfish will like you for it and you will have better luck with your overall experience in fish keeping. Having an air pump in your goldfish aquarium is absolutely necessary towards optimum fish health.

Fish Tank Light Starts Fire In Tracy Morgan's New York Home

Earlier this week some of you may have heard that a fish tank light actually caused a small fire in comedian-actor Tracy Morgan's New York City Apartment. The good news is that the fire was contained and no one was hurt, not even the fish in his aquarium. Firefighters were called and were able to get control of the fire quick before it was able to spread any further. Reports say that the fire was put out within 30 minutes.

It just goes to show people how important it is to make sure your aquarium equipment is working properly. This could have turned out worse but luckily it was taken care of quickly. The fire here that occurred in Tracy Morgan's New York City Apartment on Feb. 18th, 2009 was due to a faulty fish tank light. It is unknown whether or not he leaves his aquarium fish tank light on continuously but this is not recommended. Fish tank lights should only be on for about 8 hrs a day.

A good tip for aquarium owners is to make sure to check your aquarium equipment often to make sure it's working properly. This can avoid possible fires in case of faulty equipment. An example of checking the equipment is to make sure you check the filters after a power outage. Power outages can cause the filter to lose its prime and cause them to run dry overheating and potentially catch fire. Trust me when they run dry they get very hot if you don't know. It has happened to me several times when the power has gone out and they were extremely hot.

All I can say is Tracy Morgan was lucky that this never spread further. It would be interesting to know what aquarium fish tank light or brand he had on his fish tank. I can't imagine him having an old fish tank light on it. Maybe there are some faulty defective fish tank lights on the market that should be looked at further. The good news is that know one was hurt and I guess the fish in the aquarium had a little luck on their side that day too.

Prevent Ich Fish Disease - How To Prevent Ich ( White Spot Disease)

Many people often wonder " How Do I Prevent Ich " from reaching my aquarium and infecting my fish. There are ways in which you can prevent ich from reaching your tank. Here are some simple ich preventative measures you can do to keep ich away and how to prevent white spot disease from reaching your fish:

1. Never buy fish from an aquarium that contain sick fish at a pet store. Look for signs of ich, other external parasites or fish diseases before you make a fish purchase. You may be bringing home more then fish, some hitch hikers as well.

2. Before adding new fish to your aquarium or pond you need to quarantine new arrivals for minimum 2-4 weeks to make sure fish are okay and healthy. If not, you may be introducing ich, other external parasites or fish diseases to already healthy fish.

3. When buying aquarium plants or pond plants be sure to disinfect them before placing them in your tank or pond. To do so you can use Potassium Permanganate solution and dip the water plants in it. By doing so you can reduce the chance of introducing ich and other parasites to your aquarium.

4. Never add water to your aquarium or pond from the pet store where you may have bought fish or water plants. Fish should be netted out and water discarded. Water may contain parasites like ich (white spot disease) or other external parasites.

5. Never use the same netting and equipment from other tanks if you have more then one. By using the same net from one tank to another you risk introducing ich and other parasites from a tank that may have been sick. Have a seperate net for each tank.

6. Use an ultraviolet steriliser to help kill ich parasites. As the free swimming ich parasites known as tomites gets killed as they pass through. This may be away to help prevent ich or white spot disease in a way but there is no sure way that all tomites have been killed or destroyed. May help prevent ich but not a 100% sure way to do so.

7. Use CopperSafe From Mardel Labs fish medication to help prevent ich from occuring. One treatment last over a month. It not only helps prevent against ich but velvet and other external parasites as well.

These are just some simple ways you can help reduce the risk, and prevent ich disease from infecting your fish. Preventative measures are the best way to prevent against ich or white spot disease. In case your fish have developed ich or white spots seek ich medication and begin treatment right away.

Lots of fish owners have asked me "Does aquarium salt treat ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) White Spot Disease on goldfish?" The answer is yes! You don't always need to treat ich/ick with fish medications. There are advantages and disadvantages to both and I will talk more about them.

Treating ich on fish using aquarium salt is a much safer approach to eliminating ich from your aquarium. The only thing is that ich can only be killed in high temperature levels. Ich commonly known as white spot disease can not survive in temperatures of 86 degrees Fahrenheit as they cannot reproduce. By using aquarium salt and heating up your aquarium water using a heater, you can speed up the life cycle of ich so that the aquarium salt can kill the parasites. This combination of heat and salt treatment for ich works great but be aware that sometimes you can find a resistant strain of ich which can survive temperatures above 86 degrees Fahrenheit. In such cases that heat does not kill ich, you will need to use salt or an ich treatment medication. So really heat can actually kill ich from your aquarium alone, as well as salt and fish medications.

Destroying Ich With Heat

In order to treat ich using heat you will need to gradually heat up the water in your aquarium not too fast to eliminate white spot disease from your aquarium. To do so you will need an aquarium heater to increase the temperature in your tank. You can buy various size aquarium heaters at your local pet store or you can buy them online. Buying aquarium supplies online is a lot cheaper most of the time then pet stores. When you have your heater all set up and begin raising the temperature in your tank, make sure that you have maximum oxygen in the water by the use of an air pump. What happens when the temperature of water is high there is less readily available oxygen for your fish. At high temperatures with less oxygen fish can become stressed, so make sure your air pump is working efficiently and slowly raise the temperature of the water about 1-2 degrees an hour. You don't want to raise the water temperature to quickly which can shock your fish and stress them. Raise the temperature of the tank to 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep it here for approximately 10 days to make sure all ich has been eliminated. When treating fish always observe your fish for any signs of stress and correct them if needed. Getting rid of ich using heat alone should work unless you found a resistant strain able to withstand higher temperatures. In case of such event you will need to try another form of ich treatment medication to cure your fish from ich.

Treating Ich Using Aquarium Salt Treatment

There are many methods of treating ich on fish and aquarium salt is just another way it can be done. What you would want to do here is do a combination treatment of both aquarium salt and heat. Heating the water in your aquarium will speed up the life cycle of the parasite making the treatment quicker using aquarium salt. The reason for wanting to speed up the life cycle of ich is that ich can only be killed during the free swimming stage. By heating up the tank it will make them reproduce faster speeding up the time when they are vulnerable. You should add about 2-3 tablespoons of aquarium salt per every 5 gallons of water. What you should do is mix the aquarium salt in a container of water first then slowly add this to your aquarium. You should keep the temperature up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit along with the aquarium salt for 10 days to make sure all ich has been killed in your tank. If by chance that ich is still there you should try treating your fish with an ich medication.

Treating Ich With Fish Medication

Sometimes the above methods for ich won't always work. In this case you will need to treat your goldfish with ich medication. Treating ich with heat and aquarium salt are safer for your fish as it's more of a natural way to treating ich. Using ich medication can sometimes add more stress on your fish and can sometimes harm the biological filter depending on fish medication. Myself I've always used Malachite Green to treat ich as it's very effective. The only thing is which ever ich treatment medication you decide to use always observe your fish for any signs of stress. If you see stress, such as gasping at top of the water immediately add activated carbon back into your filter and perform a water change right away. Never add more then recommended dosage for treatment of white sot disease. Adding more is not better, and can actually kill your fish. There are many ich medications on the market to choose from. For a while now you all have been visiting my blog GoldfishCareInformation.com for all your goldfish related questions. It started off as a small blog with limited traffic but now receives almost 400-500 hits a day with around 900-1000 pageviews and growing each and everyday. I thank everyone for stopping by and looking for answers to their questions or seeking advice on how to treat their goldfish. This blog did not only just grow from the content but grew from all your posts and from people who shared a link to come visit my blog all across the Internet. Thanks again! :)

Now to help everyone and to give back to you I have been planning a forum so that each and everyone will be able to communicate with each other and talk with other pond and fish owners. Over the last few days I have been setting up a goldfish forum for anyone who would like to join and talk with other goldfish owners, share stories, pictures or simply look for more help. This will give everyone a chance not just to talk to me but to speak with other people involved in the hobby from aquariums, ponds, goldfish, koi etc... It will be a great way to share tips, see product reviews, learn about what fish medications treat what etc.. The biggest thing I want is for people to learn, meet people, offer help to one another and just have fun. Basically what I want to do is create a social network similar to Facebook but with a close group of people with all the same interests. Here on this fish forum people will be able to talk all about water gardening, ponds and fish.

The goldfish forum has just been set up and is operational right now. There is a sample of the forum above in which I will continue to work on it and spice it up with graphics and more. Goldfish Dropsy - Deadly Bacterial Infection

Just yesterday I recieved an email from one of my readers whose goldfish is suffering from dropsy (also known as pine cone disease) that I thought I should share with everyone. Brian sent me this email along with pictures looking for some advice on how to treat his goldfish which is really sick:

Hi Jamie

I'm looking for some advice, I have a really sick goldfish, I have tried everything over the last few weeks & nothing seems to be working (Inc salt, medicine, peas etc..) he is very bloated & stays at the bottom of the tank mostly, when he does swim it is very slowly and lethargic & over the past 2-3 days he has become very black in color all over his body & fins. I have been changing the water approx 1-2 times a week in the hope this will help? But I am afraid I am no expert. I have attached a few photos for you to have a look, I hope you can help, I have had him for years & would hate to lose him.

I would like to thank Brian for sending me these photos of his goldfish. The only thing is I wish I would be able to help him in this situation more. You see dropsy is a bacterial infection affecting the fish organs causing the body to swell and also the eyes to bulge. There is no real way to treat dropsy. The best thing one can do is make sure you maintain excellent water quality and try treating your fish with aquarium salt. Aquarium salt is known to help treat a wide variety of diseases and can help kill parasites as well. Maintaining water quality with proper maintenance is the best way to try and prevent dropsy from occuring.

Another suggestion that Brian should do is stop performing 1-2 water changes a week. You see by doing too many water changes can mess up your nitrogen cycle causing further stress on your goldfish. Dropsy is usually caused by poor water quality in which I suspect that has caused dropsy to occur on his goldfish. After doing the water changes Brian should add beneficial bacteria after every water change and keep testing his water quality to make sure there are no ammonia spikes. Water quality is something people need to always make sure is kept up and tested to prevent goldfish diseases and parasites from occuring.

Treating goldfish for dropsy using salt and feeding them Internal Medicated Food for bacterial infections is about the only thing you can do. The prognosis for dropsy isn't good at all. Dropsy is usually fatal and one can only try and treat their fish in hopes that he recovers. Hoping and praying is the last thing we can do just waiting to see if our attempts to treat dropsy works. Dropsy is a deadly bacterial infection and people should plan for the worse when they see symptoms on their fish.

I wish Brian best of luck and hope that his goldfish is able to recover from this deadly bacterial infection called dropsy.
