Recently, I was on set for a CA Academy of Sciences commercial that’ll air in the fall. The California Academy of Sciences is this beautiful science museum, self-described as “the only place on the planet with an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum, and a 4-story rainforest all under one roof.”

It was the first time I had ever been to this museum and WOW, it was absolutely lovely and nice to not be in front of a greenscreen mimicing amazement when I could be actually showing it.

I was part of a young couple (the guy is pictured in the this crazy picture from the Academy’s Extreme Mammals exhibit).

There were also fake grandparents, grandkids, fake mother and daughter etc (all the fake awesome family-ness you could want in a set!)

We ended up making crazy faces in front of the Gorilla exhibit (similar to our audition, which reminded me of the “Dance, Monkey, Dance” sequence in Zoolander) and we also did a frolic through some of the stuffed animal exhibits as a very adorable fake couple.

We were also lucky enough to be styled by one of the stylists for America’s Next Top Model! He was generous enough to snap this quick picture with me too. He put me in this hilariously puffy black tutu with bright purple leggings and the top and necklace above.

Just an average day visiting the museum. I was completely amused!

All-in-all, a really fun shoot where we watched Disney and Pixar movies in the breaktime and hung out and joked during the off-time. It’s interesting to be back on set as an actor after producing/writing for long periods of time. It’s certainly different!

I was sitting in the area directly behind the scene for the day (as one of the home plate fans). Pretty neat as we were right behind the plate in an exciting way! Before even getting on set, I made sure to look up who would possibly be there (from main cast to main crew). The cast that day included Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman (le sigh) and a few other stars I didn’t recognize off the top of my head. Image courtesy of Buzz Sugar.

Here’s some of the power players: Bennett Miller – Director (Capote), Michael De Luca – Producer (The Social Network), Rachael Horovitz- Producer (About Schmidt), Wally Pfister – Cinematographer (Inception!).

Knowing this, I spotted Bennett sitting by himself while everyone freaked out over being within 50 feet of Brad Pitt. I made sure to go over and say hello and tell them that I loved Capote. He was geniunely suprised (not that many people recognize or appreciate him on set, I assume) and said Thank You.

It was just really wonderful to be able to comment (in a not-annoying way) someone that I consider to be making genuinely great work. I also sat there and thought, someday I’ll have a similar set to this, filled with hundreds of screaming fans who are all hoping to get their chance to see a star. I’ll be sitting in the Producer’s chair seeing the beauty of film being created. And I’ll smile.

Which is why I have a few ways of letting people know what’s going on with me (and I recommend you do the same):

1) Facebook Fan Page: Especially if you have real news to publish – you eating a corndog is not news unless you are Kobayashi. Personal Facebook profiles (not pages) have a sneaky way of possibly going public.

2) Blog: Well, you’re reading my bloggy or my RSS feed right now, so you’re off to a great start! A blog is also a wonderful place to put longer discourse/ideas instead of trying to fit everything into 140. For me, my blog also doubles as a place to put my social media and acting resumes! If you’re stuck on where to start – check out the free Wordpress.com or the business solution Wordpress.org or just make a quick site using Blogger.

3) Email Newsletter: If you’re using/know what MailChimp or ConstantContact is, you’re in a good place. Even if you don’t – start aggregating emails of your friends and create a little update newsletter once a month as long as it is (and I’ll say it again), relevant news.

4) Personal Site: My personal site happens to host my blog as well. This is the place where all your news can live in archives or longer blog posts.

#Actors: Being positive in your career is not the same as being blissfully unaware. Be as informed about your #acting market as possible.

#Actors: Where’s the love? If you’re strugg in a rom scene w/a less-then-desireable partner, try to find smthg nice about them. Could be their ears.

#Actors: Take a good look at your #acting class. Is it really making you a better #actor or just stroking your ego?

And in case the new options aren’t showing up in your facebook account yet, no fear – looks like they might be rolling them out in the near future.

Keep an eye out! For those of us who still like having a private profile AND a public profile it’s an interesting new development to help make keeping your private stuff, well, private.

UPDATE: the bulk of the email (to advertising partners) below:

Starting today, Facebook will: 

* Provide an easy-to-use “master” control that enables users to set who can see the content they share through Facebook. This enables users to choose, with just one click, the overall privacy level they’re comfortable with for the content they share on Facebook. Of course, users can still use all of the granular controls we’ve always offered, if they wish.

* Significantly reduce the amount of information that must be visible to everyone on Facebook. Facebook will no longer require that users’ friends and connections are visible to everyone. Only Name, Profile Picture, Networks and Gender must be publicly available. Users can opt to make all other connections private.


*
Make it simple to control whether other applications and websites access any user information. While a majority of our users love Facebook apps and Facebook-enhanced websites, some may prefer not to share their information outside of Facebook. Users can now opt out with just one click.
