When most people think golf carts they think of a buggy that takes a golfer and his golf clubs around the course. And that’s a fair assumption seeing that is what they were originally produced for. But in this day and age there are other uses apart from the obvious.

Many large companies with many warehouses or factories also find a need for golf carts. Traveling to and fro between buildings is made easier and faster when using a golf buggy. These little buggies are not only convenient but also can be very useful along with the fact that they can be affordable.

You will find many manufacturers that produce these golf carts in either a manual push and pull, electric or gas version. Some can carry passengers as well as a golf bag.And for the people who like to be a little different there are companies that make custom versions to satisfy that individual need.

You don’t have to have a custom version to be a little different as you can just add some ATV wheels to make yours stand out from the others if that is what you wish.

If you are a fanatic golfer or just an occasional golfer then golf carts are still a great way to get around that 9 or 18 hole course. Of course you can purchase your own or you have the option of hiring one as well. Many courses have them for hire for reasonable prices but there may not always be one available. So if you don’t like disappointments then perhaps you should consider buying one.

A good idea is to check out the many online manufacturers that make reliable and affordable golf carts for you to choose from before making any rash decision.

Remember, whether you are a golfer or you just need the cart for convenience and versatility in your business or home you will find a wide range to choose from on the web.

For the purpose of charging worn out batteries of golf carts, Golf Cart Battery Chargers are used. 36/48 volt DC systems are the commonly used ones. The standard cart batteries can be charged about 1,000 times. This may be 2-3 years or even longer according to the country you are located. The usage frequency and handling of the carts also is an important factor on the battery life.

Battery charger levels are different for different carts. The first charging is called bulk charge. Current enters at the maximum rate, until the batteries are about 80% the voltage level. The battery will charge in the absorption mode or the 2nd battery charging stage.

Voltage regulation is an important factor in golf cart batteries. Worn or damaged batteries cause wrong capacity readings and batteries get drained. It will lose out on its performance thereby. The batteries look like full charged and the charger shuts off.

The batteries should be charged after each round of golf. It ensures that your cart is getting the best care and should be followed. Batteries should not be leveled in extreme temperature for ensuring long life. A cart placed for a long time in a hot garage can affect the life of the batteries inside it.

The charging voltage of the chargers is less with the float chargers. These are also called trickle chargers. Using these keep the batteries in a “topped off state”.

Chargers are available at low price for Club Car, Columbia, Yamaha, and Cushman golf carts apart from the cart maker. Apart from golf carts, chargers can also charge forklifts. A desulphator is included with high quality chargers.

Not only can the price of new batteries, but also replacing labor be saved. Chargers with desulphators will be of great use and economical if you have a large golf course.

by Stephen G Smith

The basic functioning of all golf carts depends on the strength of its batteries. Currently there is not a single battery on the market that is capable of powering an entire golf cart. Do keep in mind that when speaking about golf cart batteries we are actually referring to components which would fit into the physical compartment of the vehicle and has nothing to do with its inherent electrical characteristics. Usually batteries can be classified as 6-, 8-, or 12-volt types depending on their voltage output during operation. Golf cart motors on the other hand can either be 36- or 48-volt capacity. So how do you bridge the difference between the voltage output of the battery and that required by the motor?

Multiple Golf Cart Batteries

The primary solution is to make use of battery packs or combining multiple batteries to provide a single power source. The configuration for the packing of batteries would greatly depend on the voltage requirement of the electric motor. As you would know, the higher the voltage requirement, the more power the motor can deliver. So whether your vehicle relies on a 36-volt or 48-volt motor packing of batteries will deliver the necessary power it requires. The configuration would also depend on an equal existent to your preference of batteries to use so you have to choose from the different voltage types.

You can practically allow the packing of batteries by combining six 6-volt batteries to get the 36 volts requirement of the motor. You may also try three 12-volt batteries to get the same voltage output. For motors requiring 48 volts, packing of batteries can be done with six 8-volt batteries, eight 6-volt batteries, or four 12-volt batteries to deliver the required power. If you will notice, packing of batteries essentially involves as many pieces of battery as possible until you reach the desired voltage. What is not allowed though is the mixing of batteries with different voltage in a single pack. This means that you cannot mix three 8-volt batteries with one 12-volt battery to get the 48 volts requirement of the motor.

The reason why batteries of different voltage cannot be used in the packing of batteries is that they carry varying charging characteristics. So if you mix them up, there is a danger that one type of battery can overcharge while another remains undercharged. Furthermore, the 6-, 8-, and 12-volt battery types function differently during the operation phase. This means that there is a greater chance of being under powered rather than having adequate power supply which defaults the purpose of having a power source. In terms of their physical characteristics, golf cart batteries of different voltage may also differ in terms of size of the casing and the posts as well which means you may need different sized cables.

The desire to meet the power requirements of the golf cart motor is only one of the reasons why the process of packing of golf cart batteries is important. Aside from the power, the battery pack is likewise intended to deliver steady current over long usage which is ideal for golf cart electric motors. So if it’s the first time you’ve opened the battery compartment of your golf cart, don’t be surprised if you find more than one battery in there.

by Randy Wade

Buying a used golf cart can be a very confusing undertaking. There are many variations and types of carts available these days, from the very basic to wildly modified. Buyers have many options, but caution should be used to ensure you don’t inherit someone’s albatross. Knowing what to look for, could save big expenses later. The first decision to be made is whether you want a gasoline or battery powered cart. Each has its strong and weak points. Gasoline powered carts can be more powerful, making them well suited for utility service or hauling loads. They do consume the precious fossil fuel though, and can be noisy with an undesirable exhaust odor. Battery operated carts are stealthy quiet and odorless, but have a limited range between charge cycles. When the batteries are drained, you’re done until they can be recharged, which can take 8 hours or more. After you decide which fits your needs the best, and you’ve found the candidate, determine if it is really what you are looking for. Know what you are buying before you write that check.

Tire Wear – Take a general assessment of the tires and their condition. Are they all the same brand and do they have similar and even wear? Uneven wear can be indicative of serious alignment problems, a bent frame or worn out steering components. Tires of mixed brands is an indication that the cart may have seen excessive use or be a rebuild of junk parts. This may not necessarily be the case, but keep it in mind as you continue looking over the candidate cart.

Steering – Never buy a cart without taking some time to drive it. Take it over some rough terrain as well as a solid concrete driveway. Sloppy steering should be an immediate concern for you. Worn “rack and pinion” steering boxes are expensive to replace. If the rack and pinion is worn, you can also reasonably expect the steering “rod ends” and spindle bushings also need attention. None of these components are necessarily cheap to replace. The steering wheel, pulling to the left or right can be caused by uneven pressure in the tires or unmatched sizes. If the cart pulls, check the tire pressure first to see if the problem corrects. If it does not help, the spindle (on the same side that it pulls to) may have a bad wheel bearing causing dragging. You can jack up that corner of the cart and see if the wheel rotates freely.

Battery age – Most golf cart battery manufacturers stamp the date of manufacture on the top of one of the battery posts. You can easily see a “08″ or “09″ etc, even with the battery cable connected. Be aware that batteries that are more than three years old will require replacement sooner than later. Expect to pay $600 or more for a new set of batteries, no matter what the configuration or voltages are. Never assume that the batteries are of the same vintage as the model year of the cart either. Also, batteries of mixed years in the same cart could be a clue that the cart has seen some serious use in a fleet environment.

Brakes – Be sure the brakes are firm and stop the cart quickly without grinding or squealing. Brake shoe replacement is not usually a big deal unless service has been neglected to the point where the brake drum is gouged or otherwise damaged. Excessive rust and corrosion around the brake backing plates behind the rear wheels can be an indication of possible neglected maintenance.

Integrity of the frame – Steel frames are very susceptible to rust and corrosion, especially under the battery compartment. I have seen carts that otherwise look great, actually break in half due to battery acid seeping on, and eating the frame. Some manufactures, like Club Car, are now using fully welded aluminum frames which do not rust, but are still susceptible to corrosion in the form of aluminum oxide (instead of iron oxide). Corroded aluminum has a heavy layer of white fuzzy powder, which is equivalent to rust. Stay away from any cart that you suspect has a frame problem. The cart could end up being totally useless to you later.

Smooth ride – A well maintained cart should roll along smoothly and quietly. A wobbling or lumpy motion when driving on a smooth solid surface indicates a problem. A bent wheel, or worse, a bent axle will cause the cart to bob up and down with a frequency proportional to the speed. An “out of round” tire can also cause a similar symptom but is usually not the case. Worn front end components will exaggerate the symptoms dramatically.

Wiring – Wiring should be neatly routed and protected from chaffing with factory clamps and terminations. Be wary of modified wiring if it does not look professionally done. Cobbled up wiring can cause you big headaches if you are not savvy with electrical systems. A shorted wire on an electric cart can be devastating. The tremendously high current capability of the batteries can turn a shoddy wiring system into a giant cigarette lighter. Look for splices and taped up connections that do not seem to belong, and then pass on the purchase.

Odd Noises from drive train – Turn off any radios and the like when you take your test ride. Listen for any odd noises that may be present. Grinding, excessive whining or clicking sounds can help you identify problems with the cart. The sounds a vehicle makes can tell you quite a bit if you take the time to listen.

Gasoline engines – Be sure to look at the engine. Although you may not be an engine mechanic, you can still evaluate a few things easily. Gross saturation of the engine with oil and grease probably indicates a leaking crankcase or gearbox, or worse, a cracked crankcase or gearbox. Check for large amounts of sooty residue in the exhaust pipe, which is indicative of an oil burner (worn out piston rings). Be sure to let the engine warm up before you take a test ride. An engine will only reveal if it smokes a lot, after it is sufficiently hot. Take your time and check it out. Popping sounds in the exhaust or backfires can be caused by poorly adjusted carburetors, but more commonly by burned intake or exhaust valves in the engine. An engine rebuild can cost you dearly if you need one down the road. Be sure to give it the appropriate attention.

A well maintained cart can literally offer decades of reliable service. Taking time to select the right cart to fit your needs now will pay dividends later. After you purchase your cart, visit some of the vendors that offer great aftermarket products to personalize your vehicle.
There are different kinds of golf car manuals – one for owners, one for parts and another for repairs.

If you bought your cart used, you probably did not get an owner’s handbook. They can often be found on line or for free from the manufacturers website as a PDF file.

Some of the owner’s handbooks have some good foundational instructions on maintenance and safety – so this is a good place to start. The Yamaha Golf Cart Owner’s manual for instance does include great instructions and graphics on normal service and maintenance issues and it also includes schematics.

These manuals come in different formats – as a PDF file that you download and print, as a CD to view on your computer, or in a hard copy booklet. For me the most practical format is the hard copy booklet. I didn’t want to mess with printing out all the pages and putting them in a notebook – only to lose some of the pages or to arrange them in the wrong order. Having a hard copy manual to take with me into the garage while working on my Club car has worked out the best.

In order to get the correct manual, you will need to know the make, model and the year your golf car was built.

EZGO Golf Cart Manual

The EZGO golf cart manual for owners can be found on line as a free PDF file from the E-Z-Go website. The EZ Go website calls it a service manual which is not the same as a repair manual.

To obtain a repair manual you can purchase a hard copy EZGO service manual or for less money you can download a PDF copy and print it yourself.

Yamaha Golf Cart Service Manual

The Yamaha Golf Cart Service Manual can be found on line. There are several options from downloading a free service manual to purchasing a hard copy or a CD. There are several different types of manuals available, but first you will need to know the make, model and year of your Yamaha cart. Then you need to figure out which manual you want. Here are your options:

1. Owner’s Manual

2. Assembly Manual

3. Parts Manual

4. Service Manual

Club Car Service Manual

The Club Car service manual is not available for free on line or in a PDF file. Don’t bother contacting your local authorized Club Car dealer because when I checked around, none of them kept them in stock – however, they could order one for you. So you might as well do that yourself. The Club Car repair manuals normally cost from $50 – $75. Sometimes you can find them used on eBay or craigslist.

Golf cart accidents can cause severe injuries. These accidents are caused by people who do not take precautions or generally ignore the rules. However simple the rules may be, it is important to adhere to them and help everyone to stay safe.

It is worth noting that as golf cart driver; always give the pedestrians the right of way. This is especially when driving on the sidewalks.

Carrying more passengers than the available sitting capacity is risky. Always ensure that all passengers in the cart are sitting. This helps avoid overloading which is a major cause of overturning. Passengers too should be cautious and always ensure that their hands, legs and arms are in the cart especially when in motion. This will prevent the passengers from falling and getting in contact with stationary objects like trees and stones. Passengers should avoid standing in these carts and remain seated during the whole driving process.

Always ensure that the cart is going at a speed of 10mph when there are people or animals and at a speed of 15mph when there are no people. While in motion, do no attempt to shift gears for it might overturn due to instability. When there are inclines, pedestrians, other vehicles and poor weather conditions, reduce the speed until you are past the scenes or until the weather conditions are back to normal.

Golf cart drivers and operators must have a valid license and follow all traffic rules and should not drive when intoxicated. They should also check in the cart the first time they enter it for warnings and safety labels, read them and ensure that they are followed to the later. Drivers should not also underrate golf carts as small vehicles but should drive them as if they are driving a real car on an actual road.

When entering or leaving buildings, be more careful to avoid hitting walls or gates. Always park in areas designed for golf cart parking and not those with paves. When it is not in use, the driver must place the control lever in park or neutral position, set the parking break and ensure that the key is removed and secured.

Golf carts should be used solely for their functions. You should not fool around in them or drive them in water. Avoid giving them to the children to use as toys and playing instruments.

It is important for the government to consider golf carts as other vehicles that cause injuries and even death to the users or pedestrians and ensure that the set rules are being adhered to guarantee safety to its citizens. It should also notify cart users that the number of wild animals has doubled in the recent past especially elephants, thus precautions should be taken by when golfing in areas with these animals. This will prevent accidents between cart users and animals.

These rules are simple to follow and do not require any cart user to be a rocket scientist to understand them. Always keep in mind that these carts seriously hurt and kill if you are not careful with them.

Golf carts are getting more familiar with people day by day. They are useful to small communities apart from golfers, where they find use as low speed cars (35 mph). Electric cars are getting popular because of its low carbon emission. A golf cart can be fitted with many accessories if desired. The accessories are chosen without paying for unnecessary ones. It’s easy to install accessories on a golf cart yourself.

Ball and Club Washers

The ball-washer or the ball & club washer and the sand & seed bottle installation are accessories that are related to the game of golf. The washer, compact plastic molded box holding water and detergent can be divided into two, one for getting dirt and debris off the ball and the other for stiff cleaning brushes to clean the golf club head. The sand & seed bottle installation can be used to fix the bottle holding the mixture for planting the greens. In case a swing shot damages the grass, the player should reset the turf by adding seeds and sand to reverse the damage. Bag extenders causes golf clubs to clear the rear wind guard.

Solar Panels

It is a very useful accessory. When there is good sun, a solar panel, will charge up the batteries and also act roof. The range can be extended up to one mile with an hour of charging. Trickle-charging can make the battery charging more balanced. A solar panel enables you to use cellular devices, laptops, and GPS trackers and maintain connectivity. The solar carts help you decrease carbon footprint, because fossil fuels are not used.

Sales Tax

A Federal Tax Credit on 30% is available with the price when buying it. States, like Arizona and Florida, have no state sales tax. Solar-powered golf cart can help a lot in avoiding global warming.

Spitzer Golf Products offers Electric Golf Carts, Push Golf Trolleys as well as Remote Control Golf Caddy. Check more details online.

Golf carts are now a common feature in any golf course. They certainly make navigating the wide expanse of a golf course easier. They also save time by transporting players to the teeing ground and to any of the holes thereafter much faster.

However, driving a golf cart is no joyride. Just because you’ve paid your cart fee doesn’t mean that you can drive your cart anywhere you wish on the golf course. All golfers must observe some basic safety regulations where golf carts are concerned. Doing so prevents accident that could harm yourself and others. It also avoids damage to the golf course.

1. Make sure you know how to drive before getting into the driver’s seat. Common-sense dictates that you don’t turn on the ignition of an automobile if you don’t know how to drive it. Read, understand and follow the safety guidelines and other warnings posted in each cart before you speed up.

2. Don’t drive the cart where they’re not supposed to be driven. These places include hazard boundaries, about 50 yards of greens (unless you’re on a designated cart path), tee-off areas, fairways, casual water, trees or rough terrain on any part of the golf course. Golf carts aren’t trucks but they can damage the soil and vegetation in these areas. A damaged golf course won’t do any good for your game.

3. Don’t go golf-cart joyriding. Maintain the designated speed. These vehicles are open at the sides and most in use aren’t equipped with seat belts. Turning corners at top speeds have been known to throw bodies off the cart, injuring some and killing others.

4. Keep your body parts inside the cart at all times. Passengers for one crazy reason or another hang their feet outside the cart when it is in motion heedless of the dangers. The soles of golf shoes can easily be caught in a tree branch that can lead to twisted ankles and other injuries.

5. Stay on the cart path. Cart paths are areas designated by the golf course so that grasses on the turf are protected. This also prevents accidents that could otherwise stem from driving off the path.

The safety regulations you observe when driving a golf cart is similar to what you observe when you drive your own car. Bottomline: Don’t do anything in a golf cart that you wouldn’t do in your own automobile.

by Randy Pairett

Electric Golf Carts typically are powered by six lead-acid batteries mounted on a metal rack under the seat. A 36 volt system has six 6 volt deep cycle batteries and a 48 volt system has six 8 volt batteries. This type of golf cart battery must have distilled water added on a regular basis. Each golf cart owner uses their cart differently and this pattern will determine how often the batteries will need to be maintained. If you utilize your golf car 5 – 7 days per week playing golf, working around the house, or on the job then you must check the water level in each battery every 10 – 14 days. If you use it less than that then it is important to check your batteries at least once a month. It is not recommended that you add any additional acid to any battery.

Do not over fill the batteries. Fill each battery cell to within about one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch from the lower lip of the fill hole. This will allow the battery to “breathe” during the charging process. Distilled water should be added, if needed, after the charging cycle has been completed unless the tops of the internal plates are exposed. If you over fill the battery it can cause the battery to overflow during the charging cycle and allow acid from the battery to get on the golf carts body, chassis, frame work, and more then the corrosion and rusting process could begin.

To help with the watering of your golf cart batteries many people utilize a battery watering system that can be purchased from your local dealer or from the many online dealers. Before charging you should inspect the batteries. Visually check all terminals for frayed contacts and loose or damaged terminals. Inspect all battery terminals to insure that they are clean (free of corrosion) and each battery wire is tight and securely fastened to battery post.

During the “off season” the golf cart batteries should remain fully charged. Once the batteries are charged then the golf cart should be stored in a covered area. Check the batteries during the “off season” at least once every 30 days. The batteries should be recharged and the charger should be disconnect once charging is complete. It is not recommended that you leave the battery charger connected to the golf cart during “off season” storage. It is also important to keep your golf car batteries clean and free of all debris. They should be washed and neutralized with a water and baking soda solution.

It sound like a lot of work but it really only takes a few minutes to properly maintain your golf cart batteries and when properly cared for your golf cart batteries will give you many years of quality performance which, in return, will save you a lot of money. If you need assistance or you have additional questions you should contact the service department at your local golf cart dealership.
