Golf's Toughest Competitor: Lloyd Mangrum

People say Tiger Woods is golf’s fiercest competitor, but such talk would just make Lloyd Mangrum laugh. You see, Mangrum was, is, and likely always will be golf’s toughest tough guy. Tiger stares down 3-foot putts; Mangrum stared down death.

Contemporaries called Mangrum “Mr. Icicle” for his cool confidence under pressure, and for his frosty personality. So quiet as to appear condescending, Mangrum showed little emotion. Other golfers respected his ability and feared his temper.

Sam Snead remembered sitting with Mangrum at a restaurant once when Lloyd accidentally tripped a passerby. The irate man rose and started yelling at Mangrum. The golfer listened for a minute, silent and stone-faced. Then, in a flash, Mangrum picked up the sugar bowl and slammed it into the man’s face. Crunch, crash, splattering blood.
Years later, after Mangrum died—which meant he was safe saying it—Snead revealed: “Some of us weren’t sure he was quite right mentally because of what he went through in the war.”

Lloyd Mangrum earned four Battle Stars and received two Purple Hearts fighting in World War II. Serving in a forward reconnaissance group of the 9th Division of General Patton’s Third Army, Mangrum landed on Omaha Beach as part of the D-Day invasion, helped win the Battle of the Bulge, and fought to the war’s final days in Czechoslovakia. Of his original platoon, only Mangrum and one other man survived the war.

Enduring such hardships, Mangrum returned home to find that, “Golf is a cinch compared to what I went through in the war.” He went on to win 36 tournaments, ranking him in the top 15 of all time. He twice earned the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average, tallied an incredible record on four Ryder Cup teams (once serving as playing captain), and, in 1998, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Yet despite all these accomplishments very few golf fans today know anything about Lloyd Mangrum. Sportswriter Jim Murray dubbed Mangrum “the forgotten man of golf.” Certainly, his reputation suffered because of when he played. Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson all collected more victories, and even Hogan (nicknamed “the Iceman”) possessed a warmer personality.

Mangrum detested giving interviews, hated signing autographs, and often refused to shake a person’s hand. At the 1996 Masters, Byron Nelson moved about the practice facilities and asked “young pros if they ever heard of Lloyd Mangrum, and they never had.” Nelson felt that a cruel slight. Nelson lamented, “Lloyd’s the best player who’s been forgotten since I’ve been playing golf.” And it’s true to this very day.

Texas Born, Southern California Grown
Lloyd Mangrum was born on August 1, 1914, in Trenton, Texas. In truth, though, he was a southern California boy, attending James A. Foshay Junior High in Los Angeles, and spending most of his adult life in the area. He turned professional when only 15-years-old, working for his brother Ray (himself good enough to get 4th place at the 1935 U.S. Open) who was then the pro at Cliff-Dale Country Club in Dallas. Returning to California in 1934, 20-year-old Lloyd married a widowed mother of three young children. Her name was Elita, but Lloyd called her “Maw.” They proved inseparable.

While practicing to become a touring professional, Lloyd scraped together money working odd jobs during the Depression. Along with his pro duties, he parked cars, drove a taxi, sang in clubs, worked as a bouncer, and caddied. This last vocation taught him invaluable skills.
Although he never took one official lesson, Mangrum copied great golfers. “I decided the way to learn was to study the best players,” he explained. “I figured Horton Smith was the best putter, so when I carried for Horton I studied every movement he made on the green, every flicker of his muscles. Johnny Revolta had the best short game, I figured, so I did the same with him. After I’d watch him, I’d go practice for hours on end and try to do the same things he did. When I first saw Sam Snead, I knew he had the sweetest swing I’d ever seen, so I started copying him down to the way he turned his head and cocked his eyes. Golf is a mimicking proposition, anyway, I think. Maybe you don’t look like you’re copying someone, but in your mind you do and that’s what’s important.”
After some time copying these greats, Mangrum tested his own skill on tour starting with the 1936 Southern California Open. He finished sixth, collecting a $50 check. That humble beginning inspired him to try a full tournament schedule in 1937. He struggled, finishing the season at the St. Paul Open with no money in his pocket.

Flat Broke 2,000 Miles From Home
Desperate, he asked Scotty Chisholm, the tour’s radio announcer, “What does a guy do when he’s flat broke and 2,000 miles from home?” Chisholm advised, “You go back and get together another few bucks, laddie.” Himself nearly broke, Chisholm offered Mangrum a ride back to L.A. in his car. “To save buying food, we drove back to L.A. almost nonstop,” Chisholm remembered later. “We rolled up to Lloyd’s modest little joint in Monterey Park with $1.90 in the kick, dead tired, dirty and hungry.”
Undeterred, Mangrum hustled money in matches with well-heeled locals. Betting suited his personality. “I’m better under pressure than most,” he explained. “I’m also a gambler at heart, and I’ll take a chance rather than play it safe. It’s always better to be a winner.”
Along with the gambler’s mentality, Mangrum possessed the good looks of a movie star. A perfectly groomed pencil-thin mustache seemed drawn above his upper lip. He dressed in fashionable clothes that hung brilliantly upon his thin, muscular frame. His coal-black hair—greased down and center-parted—never had a single strand out of place. Indeed, by the 1940s, Mangrum supplemented his income by endorsing hair-care products like Vitalis. Had he chosen a different path, Mangrum could have doubled for Clark Gable, if not taken the role of Rhett Butler for himself.
Yet even more than his looks or personality, Mangrum became known for the cigarette always locked between his lips. A chain smoker, he seldom stopped even when swinging a club. Once, a female spectator scolded Mangrum, saying, “Athletes shouldn’t smoke.” Mangrum replied with a cold stare and deadpanned voice: “I’m no athlete, lady. I’m a golfer.”
And, by 1940, he proved himself a pretty good golfer. That year, he shot a 64 in the opening round of the Masters, which stood as low score at Augusta until Nick Price bettered it by one stroke 46 years later. (Augusta fit Mangrum’s game. He finished in the top-8 at the Masters every year from 1947 through 1956. Yet, there was no talk of Lloyd-proofing the course.) He finished tied for first at the U.S. Open, but lost in the 18-hole playoff to Lawson Little. Later that year, he notched his first professional victory at the Thomasville Open in Georgia.

Mangrum Refuses The Easy Way Out
Mangrum appeared ready for great things until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the Army. He served his country for the next four years. His golfing record would undoubtedly appear far more impressive had he not lost these years to war. While Lloyd was in combat fighting for his life out of bunkers, many golf professionals were in bunkers fighting to break 70 on their scorecard.
You see, as serious as war was, high-ranking personnel felt the need to occasionally relax, which they did at the officers-only golf courses that sprang up at almost all of America’s big training bases. Every course needs a pro, right? So, the army easily identified qualified candidates by an occupational code on their enlistment form that classified anyone as a “professional golfer.” Almost every tour pro escaped combat by accepting cushy stateside positions. For instance, when Mangrum was fighting the Germans at Bastogne, Ben Hogan was fighting his hook at the driving range.
Mangrum could have gone the safe route, but refused. When training at Fort Meade, Mangrum was offered the pro’s position at their course. When approached, a disgusted Mangrum let them know he enlisted to fight, not to golf.
History next spots Mangrum in France soon after the D-Day landings where a terrible accident nearly ended his golfing career. Racing along in a jeep on recon duty, his jeep flipped. Mangrum’s arm broke in two places, nearly shattering his shoulder. A doctor set his arm and told him: “You’ll be OK if you can raise your arm when the cast is taken off.” Eventually, after some rehab, he lifted his arm slightly. Mangrum recalled, “Not even the thrill I got from winning the Open equaled the one I got that day I found I could lift my arm. Imagine a golfer who couldn’t do anything but swing like a hockey player.”
Back in battle soon thereafter, Mangrum braved the line of fire to rescue a wounded comrade. A sniper’s bullet hit his knee. Again healing fast, Mangrum refused to be cowered. “One of our little buddies clipped me in the leg from about 300 yards while we were on reconnaissance,” he said. “He must have been a lousy shot. Imagine only nicking a guy from that distance. I could have done better with a driver and a rabbit ball.” Mangrum received his first Purple Heart for that incident. His second came near the war’s end when some shrapnel tore into his chin.
Perhaps needing to laugh at the danger, Mangrum turned both injuries into jokes. After the war, he said of his Purple Hearts: “Actually, I got them tripping over a whiskey bottle while running out of a whorehouse in Paris.”

Golf Compared to War Is A Piece of Cake
Having experienced real pressure in battle, Mangrum returned home to find golf not all that stressful. “I don’t suppose that any of the pro and amateur golfers who were combat soldiers, Marines or sailors will soon be able to think of a three-putt green as one of the really bad troubles in life,” he said.
Armed with this attitude, Mangrum went on to win the 1946 U.S. Open at Canterbury Country Club in Cleveland. No Open comes easy, however, and this one had its own fireworks…literally. After 72 holes, Mangrum stood tied with Vic Ghezzi and Byron Nelson. The three went into an 18-hole playoff the next day. All three men shot par 72s, which meant they teed it up again that afternoon for another 18-hole playoff.
With six holes remaining, Mangrum’s chances looked bleak. He trailed Ghezzi by three strokes, and Nelson by two. Then a storm hit. Rain poured down. Thunder boomed. Lightning flashed. Unlike today when such weather suspends play, golfers then were forced to continue. The danger unnerved Ghezzi and Nelson, but it appeared to calm Mangrum. Writing for the United Press, Oscar Fraley observed: “The former corporal was just another G.I. again for a minute. His cream-colored sports shirt seemed to turn to khaki and to him it no longer was a golf course. That rumble was too familiar and it meant trouble. And that’s when Mangrum looked up at the flashes, laughed and really started to play.”
Lloyd Mangrum stormed to victory by birdying half of the final six holes, capped off by a clutch 7-foot par putt on 18. He carded a par 72, beating his competitors by a stroke each. “It was the greatest demonstration of courage I ever saw on a golf course,” commented two-time Amateur champion Bud Ward. “Mangrum wasn’t given a chance in the playoff. He needed a tricky seven-foot putt on a drenched green to win. He didn’t even hesitate, just stepped up like nothing was at stake and banged it in.”
Putting always proved one of Mangrum’s strengths. Bing Crosby (himself no slouch on the links), writing in the forward for Mangrum’s first instructional book, Golf: A New Approach, noted that Lloyd had, “an ideal golfing temperament, great competitive spirit and what most folks consider the finest putting tough in the game today.” Byron Nelson agreed, saying, “He was a tough competitor and an excellent putter. Any time you beat him, you could know you were playing well.”

Putting Tips From A Putting Great
Proving the point, Mangrum’s advice on putting still rings true today. He stressed “good balance as the first consideration in good putting,” and advocated having your eyes directly over the ball. At a time when almost all pros putted by flicking their hands back and forth, Mangrum wrote, “The cardinal principle of good putting is to keep the wrists from getting into the act.” Proving yet again he was far ahead of his time, he also preached that, “The tempo of the stroke should remain the same throughout.” Today, nearly all pros putt like Mangrum did.

With that silky smooth putting stroke, Mangrum started a serious trophy collection. He won seven times in 1948. He collected four victories in each year— 1949, 1951, and 1953—with five more coming in 1950.
He even won the 1951 St. Paul Open under the pressure of a death threat. Police guessed it came from gamblers who, the night before the final round, called Sam Snead to say, “We have lots of money bet. Now you get in there and start playing. We don’t want Mangrum to win.” The gamblers obviously knew little about Mangrum, as the threat just amused him.

At a time when even the tour’s leading money winner took outside jobs to make ends meet, Mangrum earned a fine living just by playing golf. As with putting, he proved to be ahead of his time with his pro career. For starters, he never gave lessons. He couldn’t stand teaching golf. “I charge $50 an hour so even my friends will leave me alone,” he said.
He played only tournaments and exhibitions, traveling over 80,000 miles a year. He won international tournaments (not counted on his official PGA total) in Australia, Argentina and the Philippines. A Time magazine article from January of 1953 entitled “Money Player,” reveals that, “Mangrum has long played in the shadows of the Hogans, Sneads and Nelsons [but still] manages to play in more tournaments and win more money than any other touring pro.” The article estimated Mangrum earned over $300,000 playing golf in the preceding five years, representing a lot of money over 60 years ago.

The article also told that despite Mangrum’s notoriously loner personality he did depend upon one person. It said: “Mangrum’s wife, his constant traveling companion, acts as business manager and secretary.” Mangrum is then quoted saying that, “I need her. This is big business.”

Besides the Masters, where he always played well but never won, Mangrum enjoyed the most success in his home area. He won four Los Angeles Opens. After his 1953 victory, L.A. Times writer Charles Curtis quipped: “Who said Riviera is Hogan’s Alley? Let’s rename it Mangrum’s Meadows.”

Yet through this success, danger never seemed far away from Mangrum. For instance, he lost a chance to improve his record at Riviera once because he broke his shoulder in a bar fight when someone twice his size threw him down a flight of stairs. That forced him off tour for six months.

Yet Mangrum’s legacy rests as much on his reaction to adversity as upon his reputation for danger, as revealed during the 1950 U.S. Open. Hailed as the glorious Open Hogan won after coming back from a near-fatal automobile accident, Hogan prevailed only after Mangrum (and George Fazio) forced an 18-hole playoff. There, on the 17th green, Mangrum lifted his ball to brush away a bug. Under PGA rules, which he’d been playing all year, cleaning the ball was permissible. USGA rules govern the Open, however, and they did not allow for such actions. Mangrum was penalized two strokes, ending his chances of winning. Instead of complaining (or killing some pencil-necked rules official), Mangrum simply shrugged and said, “Fair enough. We’ll eat tomorrow no matter what happens.”

A few years later, still playing well, Mangrum was forced into early retirement due to a weak heart. He retired to a home across from the 18th tee at the Apple Valley Country Club in California. Mangrum fought his heart problems with the same tenacity he showed against barroom bullies and Nazi snipers. He survived 11 heart attacks. On November 17, 1973, at only 59-years-old, a 12th finally got him. It seemed a poetic end to golf’s ultimate fighter.

How Not to Hit the Ball Straight

Fading and drawing the ball are skills every good golfer should have. The modifications required to hit these shots are surprisingly very simple. Just keep in mind that the funda¬mentals, which apply to a normal shot, apply as well to these shots. To hit the fade — to move the ball from left to right — aim your clubface at the target, then open your stance and your hip and shoulder align¬ment setting your body a bit to the left. Now make your normal swing, the path of which will follow your body alignment. The only swing change you make is that you "hold on" a little more through the impact area and ¬you keep the back of the left hand firmer going more toward the target instead of releasing and rotating as it would in a normal shot.

If you want to draw the ball — moving the ball right to left — your setup and swing action will be just the opposite. Close your stance and body alignment a bit, drawing your right foot a few inches back from the line and aligning your body accordingly. Keep your clubface aimed at the target. As you swing, be sure you stay behind the ball with your upper body so you will swing on the inside-to-out path your body alignment has dictated. This time you want to make a full release, an accentuated rotation of the hands and forearms as you swing through impact.

There are some teachers and players who advocate changing the grip to effect a fade or draw. My personal belief is that a grip adjustment is more awkward than changing your setup, and the sense of discomfort that results could interfere with your swing fundamentals. l like to keep it as simple as possible, so leave the grip alone.

Phil Mickelson seems to have been born to play golf. He was born and raised in San Diego and started swinging a homemade golf club before he was even two years old. Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman was suspended for two weeks Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) for saying young players who wanted to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."

Tilghman laughed during the exchange Jan. 4 with analyst Nick Faldo at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. Civil rights activist The Reverend Al Sharpton demanded she be fired immediately.

"Lynching is not murder in general, it's not assault in general," Sharpton said. "It's a specific racial term that this woman should be held accountable for."

Faldo and Tilghman were discussing young players who could challenge the world's No. 1 player toward the end of a broadcast when Faldo suggested that "to take Tiger on, maybe they should just gang up for a while."

"Lynch him in a back alley," Tilghman replied.

The Golf Channel originally said there would be no punishment, but changed its position less than three hours after Sharpton's remarks.

"While we believe that Kelly's choice of words was inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate," Golf Channel said in its statement. "Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately."

"On Friday during our golf broadcast, Nick Faldo and I were discussing Tiger's dominance in the golf world and I used some poorly chosen words,” Tilghman said in a statement. “I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him. I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments."

"This story is a non-issue,” said Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG. “Tiger and Kelly are friends and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly. Regardless of the choice of words used, we know unequivocally that there was no ill intent in her comments. This story is a non-issue in our eyes."

But Sharpton said the fact Woods did not call for punishment of Tilghman does not mean the comment was not offensive to African-Americans.

Woods started as a young golf wunderkind who grew up to become a master player. The son of an African American Army officer father and a Thai mother, he learned to play as a child. His father, Earl, served as his teacher and mentor. Around the age of eight, Woods showed off his skills on such television shows as Good Morning America.
He studied at Stanford University and won a number of amateur U.S. golf titles before turning professional in 1996. Woods shot to fame after winning the U.S. Masters at Augusta in 1997—with a record score of 270—at the age of 21. Woods was the first African American to do so, as well as the youngest.

In his first appearance at the British Open later that year, Woods equaled the course record of 64. The next few years brought even more successes, including the 1999 and 2000 US PGA title and wins at the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2002, the Open Championship in 2000, and the U.S. Masters in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, among Woods’ five wins were the Buick Invitational and the Western Open.

Background and family

Eldrick "Tiger" Woods was born on December 30, 1975 in Cypress, California to Earl (1932-2006) and Kultida Woods (from Thailand). He is the only child of their marriage but has two half-brothers, Earl Jr. (born 1955) and Kevin (born 1957), and one half-sister, Royce (born 1958) from the 18-year marriage of Earl Woods and his first wife, Barbara Woods Gray. Earl, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and Vietnam War veteran was of mixed African American (50 percent), Chinese (25 percent) and Native American (25 percent) ancestry. Kultida (nee Punsawad), originally from Thailand, is of mixed Thai (50 percent), Chinese (25 percent), and Dutch (25 percent) ancestry. This makes Woods himself one-quarter Chinese, one quarter Thai, one quarter African American, one-eighth Native American, and one-eighth Dutch. He refers to his ethnic make-up as “Cablinasian” (a portmanteau term he coined from Caucasian, Black, American-Indian, and Asian). Woods is a Buddhist. He has said that his faith was acquired from his mother and that it helps control both his stubbornness and impatience.

Tiger got his nickname from a Vietnamese soldier friend of his father, Vuong Dang Phong, to whom his father had also given the Tiger nickname. Woods became generally known by that name and by the time he had achieved national prominence in junior and amateur golf was simply known as "Tiger Woods." On his twenty-first birthday, Woods legally changed his name from Eldrick to Tiger.[9] He grew up in Orange County, attending high school at Western High in Anaheim.

Marriage

In November 2003, Woods became engaged to Elin Nordegren, a Swedish model. They were introduced during The Open Championship in 2001 by Swedish golf star Jesper Parnevik, who had employed her as a nanny. They married on October 5, 2004 at the Sandy Lane resort on the Caribbean island of Barbados and live at Isleworth, a community in Windermere, a suburb of Orlando, Florida. They also have homes in Jackson, Wyoming, California, and Sweden. The next year, Woods won only one official PGA Tour championship. While he may have had some challenges on the course, his personal life was running smoothly.

Woods married his longtime girlfriend, Elin Nordegren, a Swedish model and former nanny, in October. Returning to dominate the sport, he won six championships in 2005 and was voted the PGA Tour Player of Year for the seventh time in nine years.

Woods experienced a great personal loss in 2006. His father died in May after battling prostate cancer. The Correct Angle of Attack at Impact

Angle of attack is the way the clubhead approaches the ball at impact.

To hit the ball correctly in the sweet spot you must understand how the clubhead should approach the ball.

When you hit a driver, the angle of attack is shallow. The clubhead should arrive to the ball at the same level.

This sweeping motion assures that you will hit the ball in the sweet spot.

Set-up Correctly for Power and Distance

In order to achieve the correct angle, you must set-up "behind the ball at address." To do this, play the ball off the inside of the left foot and tilt slightly into your right side so that the head starts behind the driver. You want to have the ball in line with your left ear. This position will help you turn and sweep the ball off the tee at impact.

Try This Drill

Practice setting up behind the ball with the driver. Place a club behind your back and make sure that your right shoulder is lower than the left. This angle should set your head behind the ball at address. Practice making a level turn, at the top of your backswing and make sure your left shoulder is over your right knee. If your left shoulder is still over your left knee, then you have a reverse pivot.

Practice your driving set-up in the mirror. Check your alignment and make sure that you are set-up behind the ball at address. Your set-up should promote a sweeping motion.
The most common fault I see with high handicappers is that they have the wrong angle of attack with their drivers. This happens when they set up incorrectly with too much weight on the left side, causing the head to be on top of the ball or even in front of the ball at address.

A reverse pivot follows this set up and causes too steep of an angle of attack. When the clubhead approaches too steeply or from the outside, you will end up hitting the ball on the toe or on the top of the clubhead.

You've heard that a golf-specific workout will help you get more distance, so you're pumping iron, jogging religiously, stretching - but you still haven't gained any distance off the tee. What's the deal?

Well, I will be the first to tell you that a golf-specific exercise program will help you gain distance, but you also need to have good swing technique to take advantage of your strength and flexibility.

If you are losing power in your golf swing, it may not be because you are not strong enough; there may be a flaw in your swing. You may need to examine your golf swing more carefully and figure out where the power leaks are occurring. I have assembled a list of seven factors that may be causing power loss, with tips on how to get more distance.
Seven reasons you're losing power

1. You may not be making solid contact with the sweet spot, or center of the clubface. For every quarter-inch you hit the ball outside of the sweet spot, you lose 12 yards of distance. If you hit the ball off the toe of the clubface, which is three-quarters of an inch outside the sweet spot, you'll lose 36 yards of distance.

Concentrate on hitting the ball on the sweet spot. Buy special clubface tape available at the pro shop that will mark your strike point when you make contact with the ball. Work until you can make solid contact with the ball right in the middle of the sweet spot.

2. You may be coming over the top on the downswing. Specifically, your arms are swung away from your body on the downswing, resulting in an "out to in" clubface path. This produces very weak shots. To fix this problem, concentrate on your right elbow (or left elbow if you are left-handed) on the downswing. Try this drill: Swing to the top of your swing and pump your arms down half way, so that your right elbow points away from your body. This will make your arms come closer to your side and make the clubhead stay behind your hands so that you can hit the inside of the ball for solid contact.

3. You may be turning your shoulder incorrectly on the downswing. If you throw your right shoulder (left shoulder if you are left-handed) toward the target as you start your downswing, the result is an over the top motion with the club. To fix this problem, concentrate on making your right shoulder rock down instead of out on the start of the downswing. This will help the arms stay closer to the body and initiate an "in to out" swing instead of over the top.

4. You may be hitting the outside of the ball at impact, imparting left to right spin. To correct this, you need to hit the inside of the ball at impact instead. To help you achieve this position, have the butt end of the club pointing inside the ball-target line as you swing your arms down. This will help you hit the inside of the ball.

5. You may be initiating your downswing with your upper body instead of your lower body from the top of the swing. This will cause your arms to swing away from your body, creating a power loss. To correct this, you must initiate the downswing with your lower body first and let the upper body follow to the finish. Concentrate on leading your downswing with your legs instead of your upper body.

6. You may be making contact with the ball at the wrong point. If your clubhead makes contact with the ground before the ball, you will lose power and hit the ball fat or thin. To make correct contact, play the ball farther back in your stance. This will help you achieve a downward blow and give you more power. Usually the ball is placed in the middle of the stance for a mid iron, but to improve contact at impact, move the ball back of center. This will help you make better contact. As you gain confidence, you can move the ball back to the center of your stance.

7. You may be pushing the ball down the fairway with your arms instead of swinging the clubhead. If your left or lead arm looks like a chicken wing on the follow-through, the club is cutting across the ball, resulting in a power loss.

To adjust, you'll need to release your forearms. Try the split grip drill to get the proper feeling. Without a ball, slide your right hand down until your index finger is on the shaft. This will make your right arm longer on the club. Take practice swings and you will feel how the right arm folds over the left one on the follow-through. Practice this until it becomes automatic and then practice hitting shots with your regular grip.

Are we Swingers or Hitters?

It's a good question and there is a difference in these two golf moves.

However, one should always 'SWING the CLUBHEAD' up and down through the ball along the target line to the pin.

In reality, all good ball strikers are 'SWINGING HITTERS'.

For right-handers, comfortably using a golf club, the sensation should be Swinging the clubhead from the left target shoulder (the pivot point) which will contribute to travelling down the line. So the longish left arm swings tha club while, approaching the bottom of the swing arc, the right hand put on the hit.

Each hands job is different. The target left hand controls the clubface. The brace-side right hand takes the lag out of the club shaft or clubhead. It makes the bottom hit.

We hear about body parts in golf. Which does what and when? What leads and what follows? What rests and what works.? I think golf is a co-operative balance of everything from the toe-nails to the finger-nails. It is a progressive muscular action from the brace foot or 'GROUND UP' through the body and club shaft to the ball resulting in holing it!

How Many Swings Should We Have In Your Bag?

From a pure teaching/mechanical standpoint you might be surprised at the answer, which is .....TWO.

How do we come to this position? Keeping it as simple as we can.

The two swings are:

1) The FULL SWING ...where we go from the bottom (address position) to the TOP of our comfortable range and back to the bottom where we make IMPACT. Solid , magical results always...RIGHT?

2) The LESS THAN FULL SWING...where we do not get to our comfortable top of the swing. This is an abbreviated swing and we use them often.

So TWO swings with fourteen or more clubs. This includes your putter which makes less than a full swing.

To ensure clarity, once our bag is calibrated (In other words, we know exactly how far each club goes), we should generally make all full swings until the yardage is shorter than our full swing pitching or sand wedge. From this distance in we then adjust with less than full swings.

Golf Club Grip

Golf Club Parts The Golf Club Grip is the top part of the Golf Club where we place our hands and Grip the Golf Club. These are the Kinds of Grip Golf Clubs might have:

1. Natural Leather Grips. Grips that are made of natural leather are the most expensive and are less water resistant. These Club Grips are also easy on the hands.
2. Synthetic Leather Grips. Are less expensive than those made with natural leather, but with almost the same features. Synthetic leather Grips are less durable than Rubber Grips.
3. Rubber Grips. Grips made of rubber are the cheapest and most durable Golf Club Grips. Rubber Grips are highly water resistant and are easiest to install.
4. Cord Grips. Cord Grips have rough surface and provides Firmer Grasp through rain, sweat or snow. You need tough hands for this Type of Grip.

Golf Club Shaft
The Golf Club Shaft is the middle part of the Golf Club that connects the Grip to the Club Head. Most Golf Club Shafts are made out of steel or graphite. The Golf Club Head is the bottom part of the Golf Club. The Clubhead is the Part of the Golf Club that actually hits the ball and they come in various shapes and sizes that all have a great effect on the Golf Ball Flight. Most Golf Clubheads are made from wood, steel or titanium. A Golf Clubhead consists of the following parts:

a. Clubface.
The Clubface is the area that hits the ball. Hitting the Ball with other parts aside from the face makes your ball go to a different direction and not towards your target. An example of this is the Shank or hitting your ball with the side of the club thus making the Ball Fly in almost a right angle.

b. Toe and Heel.
The Heel is the part of the Clubhead that is attached to the Shaft. The other end of your Clubhead is called the Toe.

c. Sole.
This is the Part of the Clubhead that rests on the ground. The Sole is designed depending on the use of your Club. The Driver's Sole is broad and flat making it glide on the ground.

d. Grooves.
The Clubface has a set of horizontal Grooves that helps in putting spin on the ball. Spin makes the ball fly higher and roll less when it lands.

e. Hosel.
The Hosel is the hole or opening where the Shaft connects to the Clubhead.
Golf Club Features

A golf club can have many features and characteristics that influence your Golf Shot in terms of the spin and the flight of your ball. The spin and the flight are important considerations in choosing the Clubs you should use in a particular situation. Each Club is made with different degrees of Loft and different Grooves.

1. Grooves.
As explained, the Grooves on the Clubface creates a backspin. These Grooves promotes ball flight and lessens the roll.

2. Loft.
The Loft is the degree that the Clubface is tilted away from the center of the Shaft. The higher the Loft your club has, the higher you can get your ball up in the air and the shorter the distance. Long shafted clubs with a bit of Loft makes a long, low shot with a bit of roll. Higher Loft means your club will make your ball fly high and land without rolling very much.

3. Weight.
The weight of your golf club will depend on its overall size and the materials used. Some people prefer heavier golf clubs as it gives them more a better feeling of control. Others prefer lighter clubs to make powerfull swings less cumbersome. Heavier clubs do help in making a harder impact on the golf ball. Club Weight depends on your own personal preferences.

4. Length.
The weight length of your Golf Club differs per club and is also dependant on your own length. Read our section on Golf Club Sizing for more information on choosing a correct club size.

A Golf Club might look like a simple instrument but it is a highly technical piece of Equipment. Understanding the Different Parts of the Golf Club is the first step to better understand Golf Clubs and selecting the correct one.

How To Choose The golf clubs

According to the golf game's rules a player cannot carry more than fourteen clubs during a game. Thus, most of today's players do not carry more than this maximum permitted number.
There four basic types of golf clubs: Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters.

Woods are usually used to hit long golf shots. Standard woods that are carried in a golf bag are 1, 3, and 5 Woods. A 1 Wood is typically referred to as a ‘driver’. As the number of your wood increases (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) you lose the amount of distance it can go, but you gain a higher trajectory. Recent golf club technology has made higher lofted woods for shorter distances. A standard golfer's bag will have a driver (1 wood) and a couple of fairway woods (3- and/or 5-wood). A driver is the longest club (typically 45 inches) making it the toughest to handle during a swing.

Iron clubs are mostly used for shots that are expected to go an average distance - typically from 125 to 200 yards. The lower the number iron, the less degree on the face of the club, hence, the farther the distance the ball will travel. On the other hand, the higher the number iron, the higher the degree on the face, and consequently, the loftier the shot will be.

An Iron features a thin clubhead with grooves on it. Experienced players opt for a blade style iron, while beginners get a cavity-back style. A blade-style has a clubhead with a full back, but a cavity back's clubhead is hollow. It is hollowed out to make a perimeter weighting effect helpful for less-experienced golfers.

Irons are categorized as long (1, 2, 3,4), mid- (5,6,7) and short (8,9). Short irons are the easiest to hit while the long ones are the hardest. The shorter the iron, the more loft there is and for beginners, the more loft, the better.

The most popular irons used are 3 Irons and 9 Irons, however, many companies also manufacture 1 Irons as well as 10 Irons.

Wedges are used for semi-short shots. They are also used for chipping, and sand shots. There are several types of Wedges, including sand wedges, pitching wedges, and lob wedges. These are iron clubs and are used for games played on difficult grounds, and approach shots to the green.

A putter is a golf club that has a low loft. This enables the ball to roll farther. A putter is typically shorter than all of your other golf clubs. Putters are the clubs most regularly used in the game and come in clubhead styles of blade, heel-toe and mallet. Lengths come in belly putters, standard and broomstick (long) putters. Which selection to choose will be based on an individual preference.

Another popular type of golf club nowadays is the Hybrid club. The Hybrid club is a cross between the Iron and the Wood, and is made for people who have difficulty using these other types of clubs.

The physical capability of every golfer is different - stance, posture, size, swing characteristics etc – yet golf manufacturers make golf clubs identical as an off-the-shelf product. However with a custom fit golf club in your hands you can be safe in the knowledge that your clubs are personalized for you and be sure that when you make a good swing the club will be square at impact and your shot should soar down the middle of the fairway.

The majority of golf clubs which you can purchase today can be customized to accommodate the individual differences between golfers. The lie angle/loft, type of shaft, length of shaft, grip type and grip size can be modified. All that is required to custom fit these clubs is some simple measurements and a basic analysis of your swing.

The following information is usually all that is required: gender, height, distance from the wrist to the floor, age, handicap/skill Level, and swing speed.

Gender is utilised as the golf industry in general utilises different definitions as to what the standard length is for both a male and a female.

Height and distance from wrist to floor is used jointly so that the fitter can determine the length of club which is best suited for you. For example a tall man with long arms could easily be fitted with a shorter shaft than an average height male with short arms. The majority of golfers however use standard length clubs.

The remainder of the measurements are used to determine what type of flex the shaft on your club should have.

The notion that the more costly the club the better it is purely doesn't hold water anymore. If you do enough research and read reviews you'll find a club that matches your degree of interest. Some play for a weekend activity and there are others who'd like to move up in the rankings. If the occasional pastime is your stride, a low- to mid-performance club can work for you. But those of you who intend to play more regularly should seriously consider custom, higher-performance clubs.

Golf Grip Tips - The legendary golfer Ben Hogan summed it up perfectly when he said - "A player with a bad golf grip doesn't want a good swing" Here's how to form the perfect golf grip

1. Hold the top of the golf club with your right hand. Important Golf Grip Tip - For the perfect golf grip let your left-hand hang naturally from the shoulder with your hand down the side of the golf club grip. The left hand will actually turn slightly inwards, towards the body, this is ok - golfer Nick Faldo recommends this golf grip tip for forming the perfect golf grip.

2. Bring the left hand forward from its NATURAL hanging position and place it against the golf club grip. The shaft should run from the fleshy pad in your palm down DIAGONALLY downwards. It should run approxiamately 1/4 inch (6mm)from the base of your little finger down through the middle joint of your index finger.

3. Now close the fingers of your left hand to form the perfect golf grip. *Important Golf Grip Tip - Do NOT grip the club too tightly. The perfect grip pressure has been likened to holding a tube of toothpaste - tight enough to hold it, but not so tight that you would squeeze out the paste.

4. Your thumb should be on top of the grip, just a little to the right of center as you look down on it. Important Golf Grip Tip - do not push the left thumb too far down the grip of the club. It may give the feeling of a more solid hold on the club, but in fact has the opposite effect, as it prevents the thumb properly supporting the golf club at the top of the backswing.

5. Now bring your right hand from its natural position, and lay the club into the fingers. Your right thumb and index finger should form a kind of trigger around the grip.
