Grafalloy ProLite Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

You may not know this (I didn't), but the Grafalloy ProLite is the "winningest graphite shaft in the history of golf and the pioneer of ultra-lite shaft design" that, is straight from Grafalloy's website. That's quite an accomplishment considering the graphite shaft has been around for many years with new competition coming out year in, year out.

The Grafalloy ProLite is an ideal shaft for better players looking to tweak their ball flight and gain distance through a lighter shaft with an emphasis on tighter torque readings to accomplish their goals.

Grafalloy offers three models of their ProLite shaft, the ProLite HL (High Launch), ProLite 35 and ProLite 45 - the number represents Torque, not weight. The ProLite 35 (3.5 Torque) is designed for the stronger player looking for reduced spin rates and lower launch and the ProLite 45 (4.5), more for the average to better player needing perhaps a bit more spin and higher launch. The ProLite HL is a higher Torque (4.2 ~ 4.8) that produces a higher ball launch.

Actual Player Feedback-

"Good players want to have the ball bore through the wind. A high flex point shaft is what you want. This shaft, although considered old technology, has yet to be surpassed by a "new" product"

Pros/Positives-

This is a proven shaft - the ProLite has been around for years and the technology sound. Even though Grafalloy sells a lot of these shafts, they try and promote their newer ones so maybe this one slipped under the radar. The ProLite is probably one of those unsung heroes. Again, the lighter weight does wonders trying to achieve maximum ball speed, especially for the average to better player.

Cons/Negatives-

If we had to find any negatives about the ProLite it would be the positive. It's been around forever. I'm sure many shafts could probably lay claim to newer technology than the ProLite, but would it be better?

Overall Rating-

Being a fan and firm believer of lighter shafts, to boost your ball speed and distance, the Grafalloy ProLite shaft is definitely a winner. Proven technology that continues to deliver.

Fujikura Motore Speeder Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Fujikura unveiled a new shaft that quite honestly will become a very popular if it holds up to the hype, quite possibly will become the shaft of the year - the Fujikura Motore Speeder.

Introduced at the Japan PGA show, Fujikura has stated the Motore Speeder is the most technologically advanced shaft they've made yet, which features the world's first 7-Ply Cross Axis design. The major advantage of this shaft is indeed the technology behind it - 7 Axis technology, which claims a significant loss in energy and promotes a great feel as well as a kick seen by no other shaft. The Motore Speeder main advantage is definitely its ability to hold its characteristics under stress - no shaft deformation is key. Made for players with relatively low spin coupled with high ball speeds. The result is a medium to high ball launch with extended carry.

Pros/Positives-

Fujikura has left no stone unturned with this one, introducing a truly technological marvel. Great graphics and technology to match, actually looks like the Matrix Ozik with its candy red appearance. Should perform well for the better player.

Cons/Negatives-

Pricey. The going price will be too high for the majority of golfers, somewhere between $300 - $400 range will put this shaft out of reach for the majority of golfers, even the serious ones.

Overview Rating-

This is a shaft to watch for sure. If you like technology, put the Fujikura Motore Speeder on the short list. Being the worlds first 7 axis weave technology, makes this shaft something special. A significant reduction of twisting and rounding of the shaft resulting in maximum kick and carry without giving up accuracy, will be Fujikura's push on this great shaft.

Look for updates to this review as it becomes more mainstream.

Titleist AP1 Irons Review

Overview/Technology-

The new and vastly improved Titleist AP1 have a smaller blade length and less offset that its predecessor. The AP1 took the successes found in other AP models and created an iron that that should definitely be on the short list come November, 2009 when Titleist launches the iron.

The AP1 features a 65 gram Tungsten-nickel bar along the sole for extreme forgiveness. In fact the COG (Center of Gravity) is a full 8 percent lower than the previous AP model.

Features:

Provide look, feel, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness Advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, technical cast irons Mainly targeted at the avid golfer with a decent skill set.

Actual Player Feedback-

"Very consistent and forgiving. Definitely get a set of irons custom made for your physique. I hit many irons before buying these incluing Nike, Mizuno, etc. and these were the clubs for me - no regrets, and they even look sweet!"

"Irons look & feel great. Perfect weighting. Demoed CG7, X22, G10, r7 CBG Max, and Di9. Kept going back to the AP1's. Very happy with purchase. Would recommend as a "tweener" iron."

Pros/Positives-

With the name of Titleist backing up the R&D of golf equipment, need you say more? The AP1 is a great looking iron with features to back it. The thinner face awith a cavity medallion provides exceptional lively and solid feel.

Cons/Negatives-

Some talk about questionable durability.

Overall Rating-

Titleist for the most part will lead the pack in R&D and workmanship. The Titleist AP1 preliminary findings make this an iron to watch in 2010. A game-improvement iron sure to get an extensive following.

Wilson Dd6 Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Wilson Dd6 driver is known for essentially two things, forgiveness and distance. If you are looking for one or both of these sought-after attributes, well, you've probably hit pay dirt.

The Staff Dd6 uses an ETF frame which captures energy and focuses it toward the face, doubling the size of the Maximum COR Hot Zone. Furthermore, the rear-positioned "L-Pods" deliver a very higher launch angle, very suitable for the better than average golfer looking for these traits off the tee.

The Wilson Dd6 driver uses primarily two technologies to make this driver what it is today:

ETF Technology

Redirects energy back to the club face doubling the max "COR hot zone"

L-POD WEIGHTING

Low and back weight position re-distributes the CG for higher launch angle.

Actual Player Feedback-

Pros/Positives-

Plus, the acclaimed Aldila NVS shaft comes standard with the Dd6 driver, a good match made in heaven. The Aldila NVS is a great shaft for players looking for a higher launch with a great "feel".

Cons/Negatives-

There's been reports to having a slightly "muted" sound. So if you like a loud pop, keep this mind when it trying it out. Probably not the best driver for the average or high handicapper.

Overall Rating-

There is no doubt, that the Wilson Dd6 driver is perfect for the player seeking the combination of distance and forgiveness would find the Wilson Dd6 very inviting. The 460cc head coupled with the things most players look for to increase distance and forgiveness will find the Dd6 very alluring.

KBS Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Just a quick note about KBS origination before getting into the details of the shaft. KBS shafts are of premium grade from FEMCO Steel Technology (FST) specifically from their head and original designer, Kim Braly. Well known in the shaft industry, Braly is recognized for creating many of the popular designs used today. No doubt KBS is a very well respected shaft, especially with the accomplished players.

KBS is a shaft made for the better player looking for a premier "feel". KBS has various flex, weight, and club options available to the golfer. Advanced Moment of Inertia technology is at the heart of this shaft and is what really makes this shaft unique - step profile and shaft consistency is improved. Therefore, KBS shafts touts an extremely smooth transfer of energy making this the true difference in the shaft.

Other attributes include ‘Oil-Quench’ tempering method which produces shafts that are arrow-straight from butt to tip. Tapered tip construction to provide a solid metal-to-metal bond in the hosel provide exceptional feel.

KBS shafts are no stranger to the PGA tour either. It's been stated that as many as 40 or more players on the PGA Tour use KBS Tour shafts with 18 top 10 finishes!

Pros/Positives-

The KBS shaft is without a doubt, one of the best "feel" iron shaft available today. The technology behind this shaft is second to none. The advanced MOI technology is what separates this shaft from other steel shafts.

Cons/Negatives-

It's not for everyone. In fact, even FST/KBS recommends this for "accomplished" players only.

Overall Rating-

If you are looking for an inexpensive iron shaft for the average player, you probably would be better suited looking elsewhere. But without a doubt, the KBS shaft is certainly one of the best iron shafts available and worthy of a good look.

House of Forged Whup-n-Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Whup-n-shaft is one bad shaft! 50 inches of being on a Long Driver Championship winner list as long as the winning drive. House of Forged Whup-n-Shaft keeps em' coming.

HOUSE OF FORGED comprised a LONG DRIVE TEAM consisting of 4 in the final 8 including eventual Champion Jamie Sadlwoski, Dewald Gouws, Joe Shuba, and Vinny Ciurluini in 2008.

When 4 out of the top 8 use one shaft, you best take note if you want a shaft that performs.

The Whup-n-Shaft comes in a number of flexes including Lady, Senior, Regular, Tour Regular, Stiff, Tour Stiff, X, and Tour X flexes. The weight generally runs between 62 and 62 grams. The Torque runs about 3.9 with a mid/high Bend point.

Pros/Positives-

Has an abundant following, especially for the heavy hitter obviously. The Whup-n-shaft has been almost a permanent fixture in the winners circle of the RE/MAX Long Drive Championships almost since its inception.

Cons/Negatives-

The Whup-n-Shaft probably does not have the R&D the other top shaft makers have - but nevertheless, it produces solid shafts.

Overall Rating-

The House of Forged Whup-n-Shaft is a true winner in the Long Drive contest which says something about the shaft, made for golfers that want to increase distance, pure and simple.

Wilson Spine Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Wilson Spine really, came out of nowhere and is now considered to be a very viable option for exceptional power.

The Spine is powered by an unique crown super-structure and perimeter weighting system. Spine generates a very high MOI with explosively long and accurate results. This year, the Spine driver offered 12° Offset driver.

According to Wilson "The Spine achieves high MOI and low CG by redistributing weight from the center of the crown to the perimeter. The result is the industry's first truly perimeter weighted driver with a higher MOI and lower CG than traditional 460cc drivers."

Pros/Positives-

The Spine is definitely definitely a driver that covers many levels of play, especially the average player - the 12 degree Offset model provides even more depth for the weekend warrior. The exceptional high MOI coupled with a low CG provides exceptional balance and power.

Cons/Negatives-

The odd or, shall I say unique shape may not fit everyone's eyes, especially at address.

Overall Rating-

Very good driver, one that has sort of taken on a life of its own. The player feedback has been very positive. The Spine achieves high MOI and low CG, making the Wilson Spine truly a well distributed and powerful driver.

Bridgestone J33R Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

A players driver for sure... The Birdgestone J33R Driver is a 460cc driver that has morphed into a beauty to behold. A 6-4 titanium construction, ultra thin crown wall construction, Elastomer compound insert absorbs excess vibration for better feel, and Tungsten weight in the sole lowers the CG for low spin, all combines for a stellar driver.

Bridgestone was slow to move to a 460cc head, but finally folded under some pressure. The J33R is definitely not for the high handicapper.

The Bridgeston J33 offers a neutral head for the low handicapper to "work the ball" with ease.

Solid driver for a low to mid handicapper. Penetrating ball flight makes this driver perfect for the higher speed swinger looking to be able to work the ball in either direction. The Aldila VS Proto stock shaft comes in R/S/X Flexes.

Cons/Negatives-

Well the fact this driver is not for the higher handicapper makes this out of reach for most golfers, the majority of golfers should probably look elsewhere. In addition, many have complained of the sound of the J33R, but this is open for interpretation.

Overall Rating-

Simply put, the Bridgestone J33R driver is a great driver in the right hands.

ACCUFlex Evolution Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

ACCUFlex who? That may be the sentiment for golfers that don't keep the pulse of the latest golf equipment. ACCUFlex is one of those companies that keep a low profile. They can run but they can't hide though - all avid golfers know all about ACCUFlex. The ACCUFlex Evolution is probably their best known and popular shafts, best known for the Long Drive Championship winnings.

The ACCUFlex Evolution utilizes Nano technology and actually was one of the first to use Nano Tubes, a highly effective way of keeping the shaft denser with fewer voids. The end result? A much stronger material with less weight - a deadly combination for heavy hitters.

The ACCUFlex is a low torque (around 2.8) with a mid-flex point. This results in a low, penetrating ball flight, perfect for the person looking for such a ball flight. ACCUFLEX suggests those with higher swing speeds and a later release are best suited to the Evolution.

Actual Player Feedback-

"Fairway Finding Machine"

Pros/Positives-

An absolute killer shaft for heavy hitters. Very stout shaft made for the big dogs.

Cons/Negatives-

It's not for the faint heart. If you are an average swinger looking for a high launch, you are best to look elsewhere. This shaft is best suited for aggressive swingers.

Overall Rating-

Very nice shaft made specifically for the heavy swinger with better tahn average club head speed with a late release. The ACCUFLex Evolution plays very true to flex. If you are in between a regular or stiff, you are probably better airing on the side of caution and sticking with the Regular. Put the ACCUFlex Evolution on your list of shafts to try.

Nippon Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Nippon shafts for irons have been around a long time. With that length of time comes accumulated knowledge of how a shaft should perform. They know shafts, because they've been in the trenches coming up with new technology and offering to the golfing public.

I was browsing their website recently and came across this on their home page which I whole heartedly agree:

"The shaft is one of the most important yet most overlooked elements of golf equipment. The fact is,the proper shaft can make a major difference in club performance and in your enjoyment of the game of golf."

That said, Nippon is without a doubt a leader in the golf shaft market, especially the iron shafts. Nippon shafts come standard in many of the top golf club manufacturers including Cleveland, Mizuno, Nike, Ping, and Srixon. That says a lot for the trust factor of Nippon.

Nippon offers many models and we will delve deeper into each of their models individually in later reviews.

The Nippon Models-

Nippon 750GH- The Lightest of the Nippon steel shafts, designed for a stable, fluid swing.

Nippon 850GH- Rapidly growing in popularity, pegged as "attacking" shaft. Still an ultra-lightweight model that features an easy contact thanks to their light weight and consistent directionality.

Nippon 950GH- Nippon's top-selling model and probably the favorite among golfers of most all levels looking to take their game to the next level.

Nippon 1050GH- A heavier model made for golfers that like to hit hard.

Nippon 1150GH Tour- Another shaft made for golfers that hit hard. The 1150GH TOUR Steel shaft for irons (Semi-lightweight type) the semi-lightweight steel shaft.

Nippon 950 GH WF- The long irons combine easy-swinging light weight with easy contact — plus the kind of distance you have to experience to believe. Short irons provide a slightly heavier feel for stability.

Nippon V90- Inherits likened performance of the 950GH but while further reducing weight to 90 grams and using a lower center of gravity.

Actual Feedback-

"Nippon 990 Uniflex in my irons and they are the best steel shafts I've used"

Pros/Positives-

Nippon is certainly one of the top steel shaft makers around and it shows. They have a loyal following that swear this is the best steel shaft available.

Cons/Negatives-

Probably not as well known as Rifle and True Temper due to it's basically an Asian shaft, but nevertheless retain a large market.

Overall Rating-

I would confirm Nippon are among the best, if not the best iron shafts available today. They provide a wide variety of options/models and have a strong following. I recently did a Poll on the favorite steel shaft and Nippon came in a close second to Rifle ahead of True Temper!

Nike Dymo Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Nike Dymo and Nike Dymo2 is definitely an attempt by Nike to significantly optimize launch and spin rates based on loft. Nike PowerBow Weighting Technology allows the center of gravity (COG) to be placed where it's most needed, by loft. The lower the loft, the more forward and higher the COG, allowing for a more penetrating ball flight. The higher the loft, the deeper and lower the COG, allowing for increased spin rates and generous launch results.

By all indications of the reviews, Nike has done well with the Dymo. However, even though the #1 player in the world plays this driver, it does not necessarily mean it serves the mere mortals well. So let's take a closer look at this driver.

The Nike Dymo has four models - Dymo, Dymo2, Dymo STR8-Fit, and the Dymo2 STR8-Fit. The basic differences between the two models (less the STR8-Fit) is one of shape, or as Nike puts it Round or Square Geometry. The Dymo2 has a square-shape and the Dymo is more conventional in nature. The Square is supposedly more "straight" while the round allows more shot shaping. The STR8-Fit is a shaft adapter and hosel fitting system that allows the player to adjust the shape of his shot through a change in the setting, to up to 8 different shot shapes, Draw to Fade.

Actual Player Feedback-

"I was playing with the Ping Rapture driver and when i tried this driver i just had to get it great club gained 15yds on my drives. Its well worth the money"

"best driver i've had by far"

Pros/Positives-

This driver is made for the masses for sure. The technology that went into this club definitely allows the average golfer to make strides in both accuracy and distance off the tee. The PowerBow Weighting Technology definitely puts this driver on the map and worthy of consideration.

Cons/Negatives-

The stock shaft, the UST Wide Body with AXIV core is questionable. Even though it is a lightweight shaft made by one of the best shaft manufacturers, having only one shaft option, in my opinion, severely limits the capability of this driver.

Overall Rating-

The Nike Dymo and Nike Dymo2, along with the added feature STR8-Fit is definitely worth a look. Given that Nike has top-notch R&D, you are assured they will come out with decent products.

Fujikura E200 Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Earlier last month, I submitted a review on the Fujikura E150 series, this week, I want to continue with this model, taking a closer look at the E200 Series, specifically the Fujikura E250, E260 and E270 shaft. The E200 series is a step up from the E100 series but provides the widest range of fitting. Basically the average golfer looking to improve will find this shaft alluring. Designed for a player looking for a mid launch, mid spin characteristics.

A closer look at the E200 Series-

Fujikura E250 - The weight ranges from 57-59 grams with a 4.2 torque. The E250 is designed for the average player looking to increase swing speed with a lighter shaft.

Fujikura E260 - The weight ranges from 66-68 grams. The 60 gram shaft is designed with a more stable shaft with a 3.9 Torque.

Fujikura E270 - The E270 is by far the most stable in the E200 family with a moderate 3.3 ~ 3.8 Torque reading. The E270 is for the better player looking for a lower ball flight.

Pros/Positives-

A very stable shaft that accommodates a wide range of players. Great shaft, great name, great price.

Cons/Negatives-

"Exclusive to our network of charter dealers", probably not one of Fujikura's most accessible shaft.

Overall Rating-

An excellent all around shaft that fits the masses, the Fujikura E200 Series is a great all-around shaft. Whether it's the lightweight E250, well rounded E260 or the tight spe E270, this shaft does well and would fit well in most all golfers bags.

Fujikura Vista Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Fujikura Vista is not only considered to be a classic by not only Fujikura, but by many avid golfers that swear to the performance of this shaft.

The Vista comes in either Pro or Tour versions. Today, we will take a quick look at this great shaft.

The Vista Tour is a low spin, low launch shaft for quicker tempos. The Tour only comes in only 60 or 70 gram weight class.

The Vista Pro on the other hand, is covers a broader spectrum, but is mainly for the smooth tempo player, looking for a medium to higher launch and keeping spin at bay. The Pro ranges in weight from 50 grams all the way up to 90. Fujikura really did a good job of offering this shaft to a wide variety of players.

Actual Player Feedback-

"Great shafts"

"I get a strong med-high ball-flight. Shaft's very stable through impact and made the already explosive feeling clubheads, even better"

"4.1 Handicap, can usually pop a drive out there anywhere from 10 yrds - 300+ yrds, if I jump on it. Pretty wild until I got this golf shaft. Granted, I have been swing the club pretty well these days, but this is the best golf shaft I have used in a long time. I was using the Adilia NV stiff, but it was still to wippy, has some real issues with spraying shots left and right. Same with my old Clev Launcher 460 8.5deg, with the original Fujikura gold color golf shaft, sFlex"

A proven shaft that has been part of Fujikura for quite some time. A very solid shaft that a wide variety of golfers look for in a shaft.

Cons/Negatives-

Tour has minimal options.

Overall Rating-

If you are looking for a stellar shaft in a decent price range, you need to try the Fujikura Vista. Most golfers will opt for the Pro only because of the vast number of options available, especially in the number of weight options in the Pro. The very cool silver metallic finish is very attractive is a topper. Two thumbs up!

Aldila DVS Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Aldila DVS incorporates a new responsive tip that promotes extra kick at impact, making this a shaft for players looking for more power but yet keeping such measurables as Torque and Launch in check. To counter the responsive tip, Aldila stabalized the shaft with a unique flex profile and a fairly low torque.

Aldila's revolutionary Micro Laminate Technology, enhanced with carbon nanotubes is responsible for giving this shaft an extremely stable but yet responsive feel.

Responsive tip with a low torque responds well to certain type of player, namely better than average looking for some distance. "High performance technology harnessed and perfected into a special blend of weight, torque, flex and feel. Simply put, sneaky long."

Pros/Positives-

Much has been written about the "liveliness" of this shaft. A very responsive tip combined with a stable profile and "controlled" torque make this a very good shaft in the right hands, a player looking for distance not but not at the expense of control.

Cons/Negatives-

If there are any negatives, it may be or feel too "whippy" to some.

Overall Rating-

The Aldila DVS will fit well with a better-than-average player looking for extra distance. The responsiveness with control is well documented and would be a nice find for anyone looking for this combination.

Accra DyMatch Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Accra DyMatch originated by the sheer number of players, both recreational and tour, that were using the same drivers shaft, fairway wood shaft and hybrid shaft.

"That situation led to some interesting discoveries. "We got to learn and watch what was going on out on the tour and DyMatch is a direct derivative of what we learned in our first year."

"Until now most manufacturers have been design shafts statistically - creating them based on specs and profiles that they want to achieve. Then they take them out and test them."

For the DyMatch took a very different approach. They challenged their engineers on a project, giving them the premise that the specs were going to be thrown out the window - they basically wanted a "kick ass" driver shaft using general profiles. That is, a shaft based on a tip and butt section.

Th end results is an exceptional driver shaft between 55 and 75 grams with an easier "load" than any previous Accra. They proceeded to test their shaft on average golfers all the way up to Tour players. A resounding consensus was met - the "smoothest" feeling shaft, maybe on the market.

The DyMatch comes in three models (S Series) and one iron model (I Series).

Fujikura E150 and E160 Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Taken straight from Fujikura, the Fujikura E100 Series which consists of the Fujikura E150 and Fujikura E160, "Proven Technology for the Player Looking to Get Better," these are words that probably hit home for the majority of golfers out there. The E100 Series is designed for the good player that wants to take that next step, but just not quite ready for prime time, tour type player that is - this is likely to hit home for a great number of you reading this review. So let's take a look at this nice shaft by Fujikura.

Fujikura E150 - this model is fairly light coming in at only 55-58 grams with a with a high spin rate. The Bend profile is also low making this a shaft that will probably produce more distance given it's weight and bend profile.

Fujikura E160 - this model is a slightly heavier model than the E150 coming in at 64-66 grams. The Bend profile is Low to Medium. This will produce a more piercing ball flight than the E150 but still is considered a high launcher. Both models are in fact, considered to be a High Launch shaft.

Pros/Positives-

This is a good fit for a low to mid handicapper, probably with a smooth swing. The higher spin rate combined with a Bend profile lends itself well to a higher ball launch and will be well suited for a good player looking to get better with distance.

Cons/Negatives-

Probably not well-suited for a low handicapper with a strong or fast swing speed. Again, given the profile of the shaft, it may start ballooning on this type of player.

This shaft may be an "in between-er" for some golfers. Designed for the better player but some of its characteristics still lean toward the recreational player looking to get better. The only way you can truly determine if its a good fit for you is to try it out, preferably on a launch monitor.

Overall Rating-

The Fujikura E150 and Fujikura E160 are very good shafts, made by one of the best shaft makers in the business. Definitely worth giving it a test drive. Again, we recommend getting trying before buying, preferably on a launch monitor.

UST IROD Shaft Review

Interlinked Carbon is used to prevent shaft deformation, commonly seen in driver shafts. This provides shot-making ability and confidence soaring, from the tee and the fairway. Interlinked Carbon is a 3K weave material used to create strength.

Harrison Saga Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Harrison Saga is a new shaft, introduced in 2008, and is known for one of the more stable shafts available today. The low Torque coupled with a a mid flex point, makes this shaft tough to beat in the dispersion category.

Harrison uses a low twist geometry that allows this shaft to have one of the best shot dispersion in its category (stable, low launch, shafts) appealing to the better golfer.

The Saga definitely is one of a dynamic profile. For example, as the overall shaft stiffness increases, the tip section stiffens up and its resistance to torque drops - by allowing the tip stiffness to correspond to the shaft flex, this allows for better players and average golfers to use the same shaft. Additionally Harrison tweaked the flex profile of the shaft so that the softer flexes have higher launch angle to appeal to a larger audience.

Cons/Negatives-

Even though the shaft profile is dynamic, the mid bend point and lower Torque will probably scare some away.

Overall Rating-

Great addition to Harrison's high quality shaft line. When you have Padraig Harrington, K.J. Choi and Rory Sabbatini touting your products, you bound to have some followers. The Harrison Saga should be no exception - it provides great stability and tight dispersion rates.

Fujikura ZCOM Six Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Fujikura ZCOM Six is one of those shafts that doesn't necessarily get the wide-spread praise that some of the other Fujikura shaft receive. But let me tell you, this is one sweet shaft.

The ZCOM is an ultra-lightweight shaft that increases launch angle and spin and performs extremely well for a wide range of players. Players from Senior to the PGA tour, all have benefited from this shaft.

Considered to be a medium launch, medium spin shaft. The higher torque (4.5) coupled with a light weight (range of 52 to 59 grams), makes this shaft a monster for increasing distance and carry.

The ZCOM bending profile allows for a flatter ball flight which is why the better players like this ultra light shaft. For above average to better players with smooth tempos, the ZCOM is truly a shaft built for speed and distance.

Pros/Positives-

An Ultra lightweight shaft that will definitely increase ball speed. This is a proven winner on all tours making this a very versatile shaft - many players will fit well into this profile. A couple of guys that play the ZCOM? How about Zach Johnson (fairway) and Luke Donald for starters. On the LPGA tour, Annika Sorenstam is probably the best known user of the ZCOM.

Cons/Negatives-

Price. This shaft is an upper end shaft over $200. Not many people will drop this kind of money.

Overall Rating-

Providing you don't mind spending extra on a shaft, the Fujikura ZCOM Six is definitely one to try. The ZCOM is a lightweight shaft that delivers ball speed that produces performance in both carry and distance. Fujikura should really market this shaft more, many golfers would love this shaft.

Penley ET2 Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Well, our first review of Penley - sorry to keep you waiting for one of the most prolific shafts on the market today. A take off from the ETA design, the Penley ET2 shaft has been under pain-staking scrutiny of the Penley Carter R&D group for the past year but introduced recently with a healthy fanfare. Although it certainly helps when you have John Daly as a major advocate, Penley has forged a respected path amongst the shaft makers and have come to be known as the quiet shaft maker that carries a big stick.

The Penley ET2 from Carter Penley is designed for the better player in mind. In fact, Carter Penley himself is quoted as saying "We started developing this shaft over a year ago and have had great player feed back and I truly feel for the better player this shaft is the best design to date, bar none." That may be a bold statement but Mr. Carter is certainly qualified to make such a statement.

The ET2 has been under development since last year and was just recently introduced at the Golf Fest. So far, they've had very good responses. Although it is now available on the market for players, club fitters, OEM's, it does not yet seem to be widely available, at least yet. We will definitely be watching this one.

Pros/Positives-

The ET2 is one of those gems. Carter Penley is known for creating golf shafts that are true performance machines, the ET2 looks to be no different.

Cons/Negatives-

The only con we could come up with is the price. The ET2 is not a cheap shaft. But than again, you are getting a quality composite that will elevate your game, paying a few extra dollar becomes a minor issue for what you get in return.

Overall Rating-

The Penley ET2 is an upgrade from the ETA design. The new design is not just for professionals like John Daly, but includes players who play a better than average game of golf and specifically want to improve on their distance and control.

Graphite Design Aura Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Graphite Design Aura is quite possibly the only shaft that literally will fit into any swing frequency. Each Aura features a unique dynamics profile that is suitable for a particular swing. The Aura has 4 models to choose from, each noted by a color.

Each color represents suitable for a swing profile - from Red (accomplished player looking for performance and control) to Green (players looking for launch, distance and carry). The Aura is a very versatile shaft sure to please most player demands.

Actual Player Feedback-

I have a guy with 110 swing speed hit Aura Pro in the new Taylormade R7 Limited 9.5* and just smoked it!!

Pros/Positives-

The color coded shaft coupled with a very reasonable price (in many cases under $50), makes it a no-brainer for the price conscience golfer looking to take the guesswork out of shaft fitting. Graphite Design also has one of the best customer service of all shaft makers.

Cons/Negatives-

Probably still unproven from the standpoint of the sheer numbers that play the shaft.

Overall Rating-

As mentioned, in this economy, many golfers are turning to cost effective means to updating their golf equipment but still demanding good value and performance. The Graphite Design Aura meets all of the criteria - performance, ease of fitting and cost effectiveness. Try out the Aura and see if it fits your game.

Mitsubishi Javln Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The Mitsubishi Javln has stayed under the radar screen as a top performing shaft. But I tell you what. If you like secrets and you can keep one, this is one to take note. The Javln is a solid game-improving shaft. Using the TRH50 - a proprietary carbon fiber with a higher modulus of elasticity, the Javln has created a hugely responsive shaft engineered to deliver tour-caliber performance.

Bottom line is the Javln produces results that are a blend of power, distance, feel and accuracy. Is it for a heavy hitter? Probably not because of the fairly high bend point. But the Javln is a solid shaft that probably does receive its due.

Pros/Positives-

This shaft is built for performance, especially in the distance category. The combination of a higher bend point coupled with a higher torque, makes this shaft a potential distance monger.

Cons/Negatives-

Since the characteristics favor the player seeking distance, the accomplished player with higher club head speeds need to be wary of the potential for a control problem. But again, much of this is subjective from the standpoint of feel.

Overall Rating-

The Mitsubishi Javln is a sleeping giant - a great, great shaft. But then again, you would expect nothing less from the stellar golf shaft maker Mitsubishi. The Javln comes in the M6 and M7 with several weight options. If you are looking for more distance with an added bonus of good roll, check out the Mitsubishi Javln.

The Graphite Design Pershing is designed to match the swing profiles of a wide variety of players. The end result is a well-balanced golf shaft that many players have an opportunity to use with success. The Pershing is quite possibly one of the most underrated shafts - a high performance shaft at a very reasonable price.

The Pershing shaft line provides a perfect match for today's large club heads. The variety of shaft weights and two available tip diameters make it suitable for any size driver or fairway wood for that matter. The combination of low-to-mid kick points and torque ranging from 3.0 to 4.5, there is a Pershing shaft available for a wide variety of players that will optimize proper launch angles and spin characteristics.

Aldila NVS Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

In past reviews, Aldila has a good representation of shaft, mainly for the accomplished player. The Aldila NVS is a shaft that could benefit not only the better player but the recreational player. The NVS has a slightly higher launch than the NV. But more importantly for the recreational player, the NVS has a more responsive tip; this in turn causes the higher launch and increased distance.

The NVS features Micro Laminate Technology which provides great consistency. This same technology that is found in the NV is present in the NVS but with a more responsive tip for golfers seeking a higher ball flight.

Actual Player Feedback-

Pros/Positives-

Overall Rating-

The Aldila NVS is a superb shaft, especially for the high ball launch seeker. The responsiveness of this shaft is definitely a plus for anyone seeking distance in a package. In addition, the shaft is very reasonably priced making this shaft more attractive for golfers seeking performance but not willing to take out a 2nd mortgage in the process.

Accra AXIV Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

Ok, this is one shaft that probably took too long to review. The Accra AXIV may not get the looks of the Aldila and Fujikura. But let me tell you, it's a shaft that deserves more attention than what it receives. The Accra team is a stellar group that delivers great shafts, the AXIV is no different.

The Accra AXIV major claim to fame? The "Rapid shaft Recovery System," the system that resists deformation and allows the shaft to return to round faster than any other shaft on the market. The loading and unloading of the golf swing alters the characteristic of a golf shaft. The AXIV Tetra-axial is there to the rescue, weaving aids in the recovery of the shaft to ensure a consistent return to the ball for each swing.

Axiv Technology - a comparison of 1 Axis, 2 Axis, and 4 Axis Materials

1 Axis found in conventional shafts - used materials wrapped with only unidirectional plies. To affect hoop more plies, stiffer material or a larger butt diameter has to be used. The end results is a counter balanced design, stiffer shaft flex or too large of a butt diameter.

2 Axis found in graphite manufacturers - used bidirectional material in a single ply to work on hoop stability. Material could run 0 - 90 direction or 45 - 45 direction.

4 Axis found in the AXIV Technology (4 Axis material), engineered with only one ply of material, provides the most efficient design in terms of shaft stability.

Mitsubishi Bassara Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

One of the things the Mitsubishi Bassara shaft possesses is a softer blend profile - a more moderate torque rating than the Tour intended Diamana Series as well as three different weights makes this shaft a perfect fit for the recreational player. This smooth and stable shaft provides the average player a godsend and the ultimate in workability otherwise not available to them.

The Bassara provides a higher trajectory, higher ball speed that equates to more distance. The goals of 99% of the golfers playing the game today.

Mitsubishi Bassara Specs-

Comes in three weights, 63g, 73g, and 83g. Torque readings, 3.6 ~ 3.9 with a Mid Flex/Bend Point profile. Flexes include X, S, R (L 63g only).

Pros/Positives-

A perfect shaft for the recreational player seeking distance and a "feel" component that otherwise alludes them when settling for a more tour-type shaft.

Cons/Negatives-

By the same token, the reason it fits a large majority of golfers with the higher torque package may find the better player with a higher swing/ball speeds looking elsewhere. Although this shaft may fit a wide variety of players, the better player may find the torque of 3.6 ~ 3.9 too high.

Overall Rating-

A great shaft for the recreational player seeking ball speed and distance. The Mitsubishi Bassara provides workability for the recreation player not found in tighter torque shafts. This shaft will no doubt help many players with a generous blend of torque and lighter weights.

Tour Edge Bazooka Geomax 2 Driver Review

The Tour Edge Bazooka Geomax touts a more than generous 20% larger clubface that creates an unbelievable target of a sweet spot. And if that's enough to get you drooling for a slap off the tee box, well take hold of the four weighted cavities in the rear of the sole that lower the CG to its max. No doubt, this driver is made for bombing.

Overall Rating-

Again, the Tour Edge Bazooka GeoMax 2 driver is not for everyone. The better player is best looking elsewhere to improve workability. However for the golfer looking for foregiveness, this is DEFINITELY worth a look.

Taylormade R7 Limited Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Taylormade R7 Limited is a thin wall titanium driver that allows room for three movable weights. The stretched triangle shape dramatically increases MOI. Nothing new with Taylormade. They've got a history of stretching the limits on all the drivers they manufacturer. But it should be duly noted that this driver can affect the ball flight by as much as 20 left and 15 yards right. That's definitely pushing the limit of manipulation by a change of a setting. But its all good. Even though adjusting ball flight by movable weights has been around a while, Taylormade is really the originator of the concept and probably has had the most success with it as well.

Overall Rating-

The Taylormade R7 Limited is another good driver. The powerful feel of a Taylormade driver never gets old, and this one is definitely no exception. The sleek look and finish makes this a definite driver to consider this year in your quest for the perfect driver. Having the Matrix Ozik as a stock option doesn't hurt either.

Grafalloy Axis Shaft Review

The Grafalloy Axis shaft is one of the true marvels in graphite shaft technology. The fiber orientation present along the multiple axes promotes an improved shaft “hoop” stiffness and flex consistency throughout the the shaft. What does this do? Cost may be a bit on the high side. But the ones willing to spend and fit nicely into the shaft, will no doubt be thrilled with the results.

Overall Rating-

Again, the technology of this shaft is rivaled by few. If you are willing to pay for a higher end shaft this is definitely one to look at. Make sure you are fitted for the shaft/head combination and you are satisfied with the feel and performance. If it does GO FOR IT! Great, great shaft.

The 2009 Callaway X-22 Irons is atop of the most popular irons list. The big story this year lies in the Precision Notch Weighting system that positions weight around the perimeter for a very high Moment of Inertia (MOI). In addition, the Tru-Bore technology that dampens vibration makes this one smooth iron. And if that doesn't tickle your tech fancy, VFT, S2H2 and 36- Degree Undercut Channel helps move the CG even further back than it's predecessor for a very large hitting area. The sixth go-around of this cast club incorporates several hallmarks of the X-series.

Pros/Positives-

The Callaway X-22 has proved it's salt to golfing warriors everywhere. The previous X-series irons have laid the groundwork for this great iron. The MOI and forgiveness will match any iron out there period. The new cavity badge definitely adds a touch of pizazz as well.

Cons/Negatives-

Not much. But one thing we did find amiss was the shaft options. Great graphite selection but only offers a UniFlex in steel. This may become a big marketing snafu for Callaway. It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Overall Rating-

The Callaway X-22 needs to be on every recreational player's short list. It offers everything a game-improvement iron should - massive MOI and forgiveness.

Overview/Technology-

The 2009' Taylormade Burner irons come with a very progressive design. Some of the extraordinary features of the Taylormade Burner Irons include sweet spot enhancing inverted cone face coupled with considerably reduced club weight makes this a very intuitive iron. But Taylormade doesn't stop there. Longer and lighter shafts reduces overall weight thereby increasing ball speed, making the Burner iron a monster in the yardage gain gain department. There are some definite advancement characteristics of the new Burner iron.

Great engineering behind this one! Tests show the 4-iron is 15 yards longer than the competition. Long, light shafts and a super thin clubface for high COR is an absolute gem. The undercut cavity along with a sole designed for shot-making, makes the Burner a great advancement for Taylormade.

Cons/Negatives-

By the same token, the longer shafts may take a while to get used to and some may even struggle.

Overall Rating-

The Taylormade Burner Irons will be a big seller and provide many positives for the average golfer. We expect this iron to overtake any Taylormade iron predecessor.

Adams Insight Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

Adams has been on the move this year introducing two new drivers, one of the the Adams Insight Tech A4 driver. The pear shaped head features a 15 gram external weight on the rear of the sole that allows a lower and considerably deeper CG (Center of Gravity) by using an internal weighting system. The curved sole is deigned to maintain structural strength with less weight.

A driver built for distance and not bad on the forgiveness scale either. Although it came in somewhere in the middle of the spin rate, Adams is known for it's innate forgiveness catering to the recreational player. The Matrix Ozik is a hot shaft and it comes as a stock shaft selection.

Cons/Negatives-

Without a true fitting system does not do itself any favor.

Overall Rating-

The Adams Insight A4 driver is definitely worth considering if you are in the market for a new driver. It fits many types of players so getting fitted or at least giving it a whirl on the demo tarps this spring will give you a good indication if it's for you.

Bobby Jones Pelz Wedge Review

Overview/Technology-

The Bobby Jones Pelz Wedge has a face insert made from Carpenter 440XH steel, a very wear resistant alloy that is typically found in industrial bearings and valve assemblies. The end result? Grooves that last for years as opposed to months or even less! Some might ask isn't that hard on the ball? Is it is but Jessee Ortiz, the designer of the wedge has got you covered. To counter the hardness innate in the materials used to make the surface inordinately hard, they added a 3M structural bonding membrane that is slightly spongy, giving it a shock absorbing effect. “These enduring wedges will help golfers hit better scoring game shots, control their wedge distances to tighter tolerances, and consistently shoot lower scores,” said Pelz.

Overall Rating-

The Bobby Jones Pelz wedge is definitely a sleeper The recreational player should look very closely at this wedge. The combination of rounded toe and leading edge makes this a wedge with a wide variety of shots. Combine it with a great team of Bobby Jones and Dave Pelz and you have yourself a winner.

Cobra L5V Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The new Cobra L5V is a large face driver that combines light carbon crown and sole insert to move the center of gravity (CG) so low that as much as 70 percent of the face is above the CG! So if you are looking for a low CG, you've found you've found it with the L5V.

Tom Morris, Principal Design Lead Engineer from Cobra, states "this is significantly more than most drivers (CG) and ensures over a high ball speeds to optimize launch conditions over a large face area."

Overall Rating-

The Cobra L5V driver may be a sleeper, but my concern is the marketing of this driver may have been sub-par. Cobra for the most part, makes good drivers and markets them well. But this one just didn't catch one as much as the other in its class. Nothing taken away from this driver though, it has had great comments. My advice would be to demo it to see if fits your swing.

Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Exotics XCG-V is a very unique driver in that it uses a mixture of materials that include a lightweight magnesium crown, a larger sweet spot than last year's model. In addition, the driver touts lightweight titanium cupface, sidewalls and sole. A V-shape stainless steel rear sole plate provides optimal CG force, much deeper than it's model predecessor.

The materials used in the XCG-V are actually joined by a chemical brazing technique unique and patented by Tour Edge.

This driver is a low launch with low to mid spin rate making this one not for the faint of heart. Although geared for a wide range of players, the driver probably fits into the better player's bag more comfortably than a beginner or recreational player. Golfers needing a high launch driver should look elsewhere or at a different model Exotics (review to come, stay tuned!).

Overall Rating-

The Tour Edge Exotics XCG-V is a great driver that happens to look pretty cool too. Produces low piercing drives with a low to moderate spin rate. Great shaft option considering the VooDoo is one of the top rated shafts for 2009'. Definitely a driver to look at this year.

Ping Rapture Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

The Ping Rapture is similar in shape to the G10, but incorporates a crescent shape with tungsten weights in the heel and toe that allow an optimal launch combined with a manageable spin rate. Actually, the Rapture comes in with a mid launch and low spin rate, making it a very desirable driver for the recreational player looking for a straight driver.

The dense tungsten weight pads in the back of the lightweight titanium head on the Rapture, expand the perimeter weighting and position the center-of-gravity low and away from the face.

The Rapture touts a variable thickness titanium face that actually helps to promote or increase ball speed, something again, the recreational player needs to gain distance.

Fujikura Motore F1 Shaft Review

Overview/Technology-

The new Fujikura Motore F1 has burst onto the scene in grand fashion! The Motore maybe didn't match

the hype of some of the other newcomers such as the Voodoo and Fubuki but nonetheless it has gained it's share of acclaim and quietly gained it's place a top shaft of 2009'.

The Motore's big claim to fame? H.I.T. which stands for High Inertia Tip. This feature stores more energy during the downswing and subsequently releases it just before impact while keeping the overall stability of the golf shaft intact. This is quite impressive given the speed of the shaft. The end result? Higher ball speed = longer distance off the tee. Does this shaft perform as well as it looks?

Very stable shaft. This shaft will retain it's characteristics for power/fast swingers. The H.I.T. technology has arrived and Fujikura has cornered the market.

Cons/Negatives-

This is no doubt, a high-end shaft with prices ranging from $220 to as high as $340! This will not be in reach for most golfers.

Overall Rating-

The Fujikura Motore F1 should do well. It's caters primarily to the better player with the low to mid launch, but I think many players could fit into this shaft. The best thing to do is demo this shaft and see for yourself.

Taylormade R9 Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

Well, the long awaited arrival is bestowed upon us, the introduction of the Taylormade R9. The R9 has received as much fanfare a new driver can receive. And even though the jury is still out on it's overall performance early indications are positive - the R9 has gotten some good reviews.

Taylormade made it clear out of the gate that the R9 will be it's touted flagship. Flight Control Technology (FCT), Movable Weight Technology, Inverted Cone Technology (ICT), and Ultra Thin Wall Technology, top the list of technological advances TM put into this driver.

Flight Control Technology - This is a cool and upcoming technology. This allows the player to easily move or change loft, lie and face angle! FCT uses a sleeve that is positioned over the tip of the shaft to accomplish. The sleeve can be rotated into different positions, changing the characteristics of the head, by loosening the bolt that secures the sleeve and shaft into the clubhead.

Movable Weight Technology - is nothing new for TM. The clubhead weight can be changed to by the player to change the characteristics of the club. This allows the golfer to optimize CG.

Inverted Cone Technology - has also been available for some time and become quite prevalent, Taylormade and other driver manufacturers as well. Nevertheless, it's a sound technology that is gaining in popularity. ICT optimizes the behavior of the clubface at impact, creating for an expanded COR zone.

Ultra Thin Wall Technology - this technology is also gaining steam amongst today's drivers. This allows saved weight and makes the incorporation of MWT and FCT possible.

Taylormade R9 Specs-

The R9 comes in 8.5, 9.5, and 10.5 with 59 degree lie angle. For those that like the sleeker, smaller clubhead, you are in for a treat. Similar to the R7 model, the R9 in 422 cc for the 10.5, 420 cc in the 9.5 and 418 cc for the 8.5 418 cc, well under the norm of 460 cc.

Cons/Negatives-

Too many options for the player? Well, this could definitely overwhelm many recreational players. For the avid, more advanced player however, it just adds more arsenal.

Overall Rating-

Great driver that has lived up to it's fanfare. You should try this driver out this spring, it's beginning to catch fire and will soon be one of the better drivers available. Give the Taylormade R9 a good look this year.

Fujikura Rombax Review

Overview/Technology-

Fujikura is one of the leaders in golf shafts and the Rombax is one of their premier shaft models. The Rombax is really three shaft models in one, the Rombax W, Rombax X, and Rombax Z and all pack a punch - and each far reaching - we will be discussing the profile of each of these and more.

The Rombax W is a shaft designed for players average players with standard ball flight and launch angle but like to “go after it” once in a while without losing control and consistency. Control with distance is the emphasis.

The Rombax X model has a softer butt design yielding an ever so slightly higher launch angle but still reducing the overall spin rates. Increase distance is the emphasis.

The Rombax Z is the newest shaft in the Rombax family, introduced in 2008, this shaft targets the "better" player with a desire for a low, penetrating ball flight. The Z has a stiff tip and high bend profile making it easy to dramatically reduce ball spin and launch angle.

The Fujikura Rombax is definitely a shaft to try. Do to it's wide range effect, it's best to go and try it on the range. Many players have provided very positive feedback.

Wilson Smooth Driver Review

Technology Overview-

Wilson may not be one of the big players on the block but they produce some great, relatively inexpensive golf equipment, the Wilson Smooth will fall into this category. This driver incorporates a changing weight pad in the sole of the club to optimize the CG within each loft from middle-low starting in the low lofts, to low and deep in the high lofts.

This 460cc driver is one of a smooth shape outside matched by the powerful, efficient performance on the inside. The Smooth is quite beautiful to look with great performance to match.

The CG based on loft seems to be a good concept. This driver does not lack distance, Wilson even points to research that shows R (Regular) and S (Stiff) flex players picking up extra clubhead speed with the driver.

Cons/Negatives-

The Launch angle and Spin rate does not seem to favor the recreational player, low and high respectively.

Overall Rating-

The CG and face design do seem to favor added distance by way of increased clubhead speed. There isn't a lot of information available at the time of this writing however Wilson does seem to be onto something here with the Wilson Smooth.

Mizuno MX-700 Driver Review

Technology/Overview-

The new Mizuno MX-700 driver is the talk of the town, so to speak. The new Mizuno 460cc driver is a wide body geometry shaped driver that pushes the CG toward the back... way back. And CG is not he only thing going for this driver. The face incorporates a Ti-9 titanium alloy that is designed with a grain structure that really allows this driver to improve ball speed especially on off center hits.

Mizuno offers "Power Hull" body construction utilizes internal reinforcements for powerful sound and feel.

This driver exudes confidence at address, I just plain like the looks of this driver. Mizuno has traditionally catered to the more accomplished player. Until now. In the case of the Mizuno MX-700, they broke the mold by offering the recreational player a nice high launch, low spin driver that will be sure to fare well.

Cons/Negatives-

Really the only one we came up with is the head fitting is not interchangeable. Therefore, since there is an extensive custom shaft selection including Fujikura, Grafalloy and Mitsubishi, it makes it difficult to test.

Overall Rating-

The Mizuno MX-700 should do well. It earned a Silver rating from Golf Digest for drivers under $350. "A “Hot Metal” face and geometric body design combine to create Mizuno’s most powerful and most forgiving driver ever," Straight from Mizuno. Yep, put this one on your short list this spring to take a good long look at.

Cobra S9-1 Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

CG is the name of the game for the new Cobra S9-1 Driver. The all titanium driver has been downsized to take advantage of each loft. In addition to the optimized CG, rather dramatic changes have been made from last year's model such as slightly narrower face and less crown surface area. The weight has been reduced by almost 6 grams to increase club-head speed - this to me is a biggie. I am an advocate on stripping unnecessary weight to increase club-head speed. This is the name of the game to gain additional yardage.

Other notables for the Cobra S9-1 is the new Hotter 9 Points technology to further increase clubface efficiency. What is this? It's the design of the driver to maximize COR using a Dual Rhombas insert to promote higher ball speed and a more consistent ball flight across the entire club face.

Comes in three different models (excluding the S9-1 Pro): S9-1 M for swing speeds of 87-108 and ball speeds of 125-155, S9-F for swing speeds of 97 or less and ball speeds of 140 or less and finally the S9-M (offset) for swing speeds of 97 or less and ball speeds of 140 or less.

Absolutely great looking driver. Cobra has always come out with stellar drivers and this one is no exception. Very high MOI and balanced face makes this one of the straighter drivers on the market today. Excellent custom shaft selection such as Graphite Design, YS-6+ and YS-7+, Aldila DVS, Aldila NV, Grafalloy Prolaunch, Proforce V2, Fujikura Speedax, Rombax, and the Mitsubishi Diaman to name a few.

Cons/Negatives-

Driver is probably more geared for the average player. Lacks lower loft selection (starting at 9.5) unless you go to the Cobra S9-1 Pro model. These are not negatives to the majority of players however...

The Cobra S9-1 is definitely a great driver for the average to better than average golfer looking for distance and accuracy. Callaway FT-9 Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

Callaway keeps coming with new big dogs, this one is the Callaway FT-9 and it probably is gaining the most praise amongst the ardent golfers.

Nobody does it better then Callaway using multiple materials and this one is no exception. The carbon fiber composite frame is a full 7% longer than its predecessor, FT-5 and uses 6 materials to literally push the CG low and deep. The cupface is titanium with an internal X pattern design to drastically improve off center hits... otherwise known as misses (your buddies of course:).

The big push by Callaway for the FT-9 is the ability to shape your shots, "the shot makers return" is the blurb in the commercial, fade, draw or anything in between. Of course it's nice to have Phil Mickelson be your spokesman when promoting creativity. What's behind it? The Hyperbolic Face Technology where ball speeds are purported to dramatically increase across the entire face generated more distance. Coupled with the Fusion Technology that creates maximum perimeter weighting and you have a very high tech driver waiting for action.

Pros/Positives-

Like I mentioned, nobody combines materials better than Callaway. Their R&D is second to none and they prove it year after year. I really like the fact they are using the Fujikura ZCom Six as their stock shaft. This is an unbelievable shaft, very smooth, lightweight and a higher torque reading makes this a long but controllable shaft. BTW, unlike the Diablo, this driver is part of the OptiFit system, a nice perk.

Cons/Negatives-

Not many being it's so new. The only thing I could uncover is the 13 loft has weight configurations that may cause for the golfer opting for such a high lofted driver.

Overall/Rating-

The Callaway FT-9 looks like another clear-cut winner for Callaway. It's still very early in the game, but early indications are it will fare well. Phil Mickelson had high praise for the driver even after shooting high numbers at a recent tournament. It's definitely worth checking out this year at the Demo days...

Grafalloy Epic Review

Overview/Technology-

Well it's here... Although not new in 2009', the Grafalloy Epic was Grafalloy's first go at the new technology that puts a new meaning to strength, the patented Nanofuse technology. Grafalloy is offering the distance of graphite with the control of steel... that's the mantra anyway. “Epic represents the first sporting goods product that’s been truly enabled by recent advances in utilizing complete nanotechnology,” states Graeme Horwood, Vice President Engineering / R & D. The Nanofuse technology material offers a super-lightweight shaft with explosive distance and up to 35% improvement in shot dispersion. If this is true, this would put an extra 20 yards in distance! This is a bold statement by Grafalloy, let's see if they can back it up.

Grafalloy Epic Specs-

The specs are fairly uniform. The shaft flex comes in R, S and X and weight ranges from 69 to 73 based on the Tip Size .335 or .350. The Torque is 3.5 for all models.

Pros/Positives-

The rave is a smooth shaft with tight dispersion and added distance. A very good looking shaft with it's silvery with exceptional calligraphy. Almost reminds me of the new Fubuki. This shaft has proven and continues to gain notice. The shaft is basically a high launch, low to mid spin shaft that provides exceptional feel.

Cons/Negatives-

Price. This is a high-end shaft with a higher end price that may put this shaft out of reach for many which is unfortunate.

Overall Rating-

Due to it's fairly new technology and higher price, it's not a mainstream shaft but amid the rave reviews, it continues to gain in popularity amongst the ardent golfer looking for right shaft profile. The Grafalloy Epic is a high end, quality shaft that maybe fair to say, is ahead of it's time?

Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

Well, tonight we are going to look at the new Callaway Big Bertha Diablo. And if that name doesn't scare you off, you are in for a treat. This all titanium construction uses a unique hyperbolic cupface that is of variable thickness to optimize those off center hits that ultimately makes this one of the straightest new drivers of 2009'.

If the hyperbolic cupface doesn't do the trick, the head fuses three sheets of titanium that includes a .68 millimeter crown that actually frees weight for use in an internal chip in the sole.

Callaway touts the new Edge Technology that provides a very high MOI with an optimized CG for both the Draw or Neutral models. The end result? A long, penetrating ball flight with the shot shape you desire even for the recreational player.

Pros/Positive Takeaways-

This shaft earned rave reviews with testers of the Golf Digest Hot Driver List. The main theme after the test was one of straight and long. I personally think the Aldila DVS shaft was an excellent choice by Callaway. The Aldila DVS gives the driver a softer tip for extra ball speed off the tee.

Cons/Negative Takeaways-

It's still too early what negatives if any will come from this driver. The only thing I could drum up is the fact that head is a bit odd shaped at address that may turn some off. I also read that the Diablo would not be part of the Callaway OptFit, a program that has earned some recognition for club/shaft fitting.

Overall Rating-

The Callaway Big Bertha Diablo should do very well, especially for the aspiring recreational player. The driver will provide distance and control off the tee.

Technology Overview-

Well look out! The Cleveland HiBore Monster XLS is peeking it's large, thin face around the corner staring you right in the face!

This is Cleveland's biggest and baddest (make that broadest) hitting area to date, covering 16 percent larger than it's predecessor, the HiBore XLS! That's a big increase. The intent of Cleveland? To provide an ultra-stable and ultra-forgiving driver. By all indications, it looks like they've succeeded.

The HiBore Monster is by all means a high launch, low spin driver. The clubface was raised relative to where the sole touches the ground to reduce the mass by 7 grams to achieve the high launch/low spin combination.

This is a super-forgiving driver, extremely high MOI and great selection of stock shafts is sure to be able to fit any type of swing. Cleveland also offers the Draw and Tour version for golfers on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Cons/Negatives-

Loudness is the common theme. Once you get past the sound of the driver, you have yourself a potential winner.

Overall Rating-

Again, the Cleveland HiBore Monster driver is geared for the beginner/intermediate player unless you go with the Tour. The driver is listed for $299 retail which is the "accessible" price so it should be a hot seller for Cleveland this year.

Callaway FT-iQ Driver Review

Callaway FT-iQ Overview/Technology-

The Callaway FT-iQ is certainly one of the most interesting drivers of 2009'. The shape looks more like a torpedo than a driver but I must say, the reviews thus far have been favorable. Top that off with a Gold rating by Golf Digest Hot Drivers list, and you've got a potential winner here that will make a big impact this Spring.

The carbon fiber shell provides a an overall improvement to the head stability of the driver. By utilizing a hyperbolic X-design in the cupface and rear-weighted along with a stretched square shape, the MOI on this club stretches the limit of the PGA standard. The ball launch is considered higher than that of the FT-i, it's predessor. In addition, the driver boasts a much lower spin rate than that of the FT-i.

Pros/Positives-

A very high tech driver that provides a feeling of confidence at address. The stealthy looking head shape provide a larger hitting area while keeping the sleek design. The extreme MOI provides a the average golfer with the resources to launch the ball with ease. New Mitsubishi Fubuki shaft nails it as being state of the art.

Cons/Negatives-

The closed club face does take the "workability" away from the scratch or low handicap golfer.

Overall/Rating-

The Callaway FT-iQ will become a hit for sure. The club is designed with the recreational player in mind, an extremely high MOI coupled with a low spin, provides all the ammunition for a straight, long ball. The fact that it is fitted at the factory with a Mitsubishi Fubuki, one of the hottest driver shafts on the market, makes this driver a must-see, must-try, driver for 2009'!

Adams Speedline Driver Review

Overview/Technology-

Well, it looks like Adams has done it again. Just when the big boys are thinking they are creating distance from their competitors, Adams Golf comes up with another winner, the Adams Speedline. Too early to tell just how well this driver will do, but by the looks of it, well. Real well in fact.

Adams has a reputation of catering to the average golfer, the avid golfers that make the sport what it is today. And it looks like they have another one here, the Speedline was introduced and has gotten the attention with the recent Gold rating from 2009' Golf Digest Hot List for Drivers Under $350.

The driver has been streamlined to help achieve aerodynamic efficiency. The design features a scooped heel and toe slots, a smaller face and optimal crown height and curve. The Speedline is the first driver in golf to be engineered using wind tunnel technology for superior aerodynamics. The unparalled aerodynmics translates into higher swing speeds for all types of golfers looking for more distance.

It's a high launch driver geared for the recreational player. Certainly not to say it will not suit the lower handicap, as proven it does with 3 Tour wins already!
