Jbe Kruger Wins Maiden European Tour Title

South Africa’s Jbe Kruger, courtesy of a final 69, claimed his maiden European tour victory by two shots in the Avantha Masters in New Delhi, India, on Sunday.

Kruger’s four round total of 14 under par 274 was enough to see off the challenge of Spaniard Jorge Campillo and German Marcel Siem with the pair sharing second place. Kruger, with three bogies for the entire week, was near-flawless in his final round, with his only bogey on the last day coming on the 17th hole. On his opening nine he put together six pars, and picked up birdies on the fourth, sixth and eighth holes. Making the turn with just one stroke advantage, Kruger holed a putt from off the green at the par three 11th to reach the 15 under mark.

Lara, playing ahead of Kruger, bogied the 13th to give Kruger a three shot cushion. On the 15th hole, Kruger hit a poor birdie putt and left himself a six-footer for par. Kruger, 25, showed little nerves as he banged the putt in to hold onto his three-shot advantage with three to play. On the penultimate hole, Kruger sent his second approach on the par four marginally long in the rough behind the green. He opted to putt out the rough instead of chip and was unable to get the ball anywhere close to the hole. Kruger two putted for bogey to shave his lead to two heading down the last hole.

Angry after his drop in the previous hole, Kruger launched into his tee shot with his driver on the par five 18th and pushed it right, nearly hitting a cameraman. After the out-of-position drive, Kruger compounded his mistake by not finding the fairway with his second shot as he ended in the left rough. On his third shot, Kruger struck the killer blow with his approach as the ball nestled to 15 feet left of the pin.

With a few putts for the win, Kruger stroked the ball with ease to a couple feet and duly made the return for the two stroke win.

Kruger joins fellow South African Branden Grace who also earned his maiden European tour victory in 2012. Kruger’s win also makes it the fourth South African win on tour this year, following Grace and Louis Oosthuizen in the Africa Open.

Kruger had impressive career as an amateur, winning six times in South Africa before turning professional in 2007.

With an aggressive fast-action, he has been compared to Gary Player who used to also try and hit the ball as hard as he could. The comparisions do not end there, as he also has a small build, like the Black Knight. Kruger has two victories on the local Sunshine tour, the first coming at the Zambia Open in 2009 and his second in the Zimbabwe Open in 2010.

It might not have been the green jacket and trophy he was hoping for, but on Sunday afternoon 09 October 2011 on the other side of the globe, Rickie Fowler finally captured his first professional victory.

At first glance the victory doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. Sure, he finally won a pro event, but after watching him blow leads and crumble down the stretch on the weekend in PGA Tour tournaments, the move to fly clear across the world to South Korea to play in the OneAsia Tour’s Korea Open seemed like a desperate attempt to get a win against a watered-down field.

But if you look closer at the leaderboard, you’ll notice a couple big names right behind Fowler: Rory McIlroy and Y.E. Yang, two guys with major championship wins on their resumes.

Fowler didn’t just win another tour event; he took down an international event with some of the best names in the field making a push in the final round, including McIlroy, who fired a 64 on Sunday.

Fowler won by an impressive six shots, but it may have been the way he made a charge on Saturday — firing a 63 to grab the lead — that made you believe the 22-year-old is going to be a major player on the golf scene for a long time to come.

Bill Haas Wins The Fed Ex Cup After Dramatic Playoff

Bill Haas wins the 2011 Fed Ex Cup

Bill Haas defeated Hunter Mahan in a playoff to win the TOUR Championship and take home the FedEx Cup title. The combination of Haas’s win and Webb Simpson finishing outside the top 20 allowed Haas to take the title by just 15 points.

With the win on Sunday Haas earned a total of $11.4 million this weekend, $1,440,000 for the TOUR Championship and $10 million for the FedEx Cup. The win is the third career victory for Haas, he won the Bob Hope and Viking Classic in 2010. Prior to the TOUR Championship, Haas had finished runner up in two tournaments in 2011, losing both in a playoff.

Haas had to play an unbelievable shot out of a water hazard to stay in the playoff - He stuck it to 10 feet AMAZING!

The TOUR Championship victory by Haas was impressive but in order to win the FedEx Cup he needed serious help. Coming into the final FedEx Cup event, Haas was ranked 25th out of the final 30 players, an unlikely candidate to win considering the names ahead of him. In order for Haas to win the FedEx Cup, the following had to happen:

The top ranked player, Webb Simpson needed to finished in 19th or worse. Dustin Johnson, who was in second place, had to finish 6th or worse. Luke Donald, the top ranked golfer in the world was third in the FedEx Cup standings, he needed to finish tied for 3rd or worse along with fellow Englishman, Justin Rose, Brandt Snedeker and Matt Kuchar.

In one of the unlikeliest scenarios imaginable, it all came together for Haas. Simpson finished in 22nd place, Johnson in 23rd. Justin Rose finished tied for 20th with Matt Kuchar and Snedeker was 16th. Luke Donald, who many expected to pull it out, finished in a tie for 3rd, missing the FedEx Cup title by 193 points.

The swing in momentum was clear as Bradley and Dufner headed to the first playoff hole. Bradley nearly made birdie on 18 to win outright while Dufner was left to figure out what went wrong. Heading to replay three of the toughest holes in PGA Championship history, the big question was “could Dufner recover”?.

It didn’t take long for our question to be answered. Like he did in the final round, Bradley made a birdie on 16 to take a one stroke lead over Dufner who made par. It was more of the same on 17 but this time it was Bradley needed only par to take the one stroke advantage as a tired looking Dufner made a bogey. The 18th hole was anything but routine when Bradley, with a two stroke lead, decided to go for the green over the water guarding the front. His shot carried the hazard by a whisker and left himself about 20 feet for his first major championship.

For Bradley, the win came in just his 24th career start and the first major of his career. It is his second win of the 2011 PGA TOUR season, he won the HP Byron Nelson Championship earlier this year and finished in the top 10 at the Valero Texas Open and the Bob Hope Classic. The 25 year old rookie moved from 24th to 4th in the FedEx Cup standings and 29th in the Official World Golf Rankings, he was previously ranked 108th.

Darren Clarke Wins the Open Champs At Age 42

So much for having his best days behind him – Darren Clarke became the oldest Open champion since 1967 and sparked yet another party across Northern Ireland.

Just a month after Rory McIlroy became the youngest US Open winner since 1933 and a year after Graeme McDowell’s triumph in the same event, Clarke joined them in the major club with an astonishing performance at Sandwich.

The 42-year-old, 111th in the world and viewed more as a mentor for his 22-year-old compatriot McIlroy than a contender when they practised together last Wednesday, lifted the Claret Jug at his 20th attempt.

He did so by three shots from Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, extending America’s record barren spell in the four majors to six going back to Mickelson’s victory in last year’s Masters.

Clarke 140th Open Champ

“It’s incredible – it really is,” said Clarke, becoming emotional when mention was made of his two sons, left motherless in 2006 when his wife Heather died of breast cancer.

“It’s for the kids,” he added.

Nobody has ever waited so long and then won The Open, yet with a closing 70 in more wind and rain Clarke finished his 54th major with a five-under-par total of 275.

The former Ryder Cup star – hero of the 2006 victory six weeks after he lost his wife – could even enjoy the walk up the final fairway knowing the job was done.

He had just dropped a shot on the 17th and could even afford to three-putt the last for another bogey.

With that Clarke, with his two sons at home in Portrush, punched the air repeatedly, took his cap off and waved it to all parts and hugged caddie John Mulrooney.

“I’m a bit speechless,” Clarke stated. “The last couple of holes I was trying not to make stupid mistakes and just play really careful.”

He had just become £900,000 richer and at a stroke – or rather 275 of them – had moved back into the game’s top 30.
