The 4th hole, measuring 462 yards from the back tee, is a perfect example of that. The tee is slightly elevated giving the player a good view of the hole. Fairway bunkers left and right, plus trees, narrow the hole as you go.

The second shot plays somewhat uphill, to an elevated green. You get that a lot at Cog Hill. This fairway bunker needs to be avoided like the Plague and women missing a front tooth (GPW learned this factoid from personal experience).

Because the majority of the greens are elevated and fronted by bunkers, there are limited options when playing to the putting surface. In an effort to appease the USGA and land a future U.S. Open, Cog Hill sold its soul to the devil. What used to be Chicago's best public golf course is now simply a brute and not very much fun to play.

Waterville Par 3 12th

Today GPW brings you the par 3 12th hole at Waterville.

Waterville is located just a mile or so outside of town. It measures an even 200 yards from the back tees. The tee box is surrounded by dunes and must carry a wasteland of gorse, bunkers and deep fescue grass. An enormous depression, not seen in the picture, perhaps 30 feet below the surface of the green, must be avoided on the tee shot. The hole rests along the beach, found to the players left. Three pot bunkers lie in wait just right of the green. The 9th is difficult becasue the front portion of the green is extremely narrow. The back portion of the green opens up somewhat, and is ringed by modest dunes. The 9th is at the edge of the property. The white building behind the hole is someone else's land. To GPW's untrained eye, it looked to be a working sheep farm.

From behind the green, you can see just how narrow the front portion of the green is. Today, we've got four pictures to examine.

Butter. A baby's butt. The top of Jefe's dome. Wego's pickup lines. Caddy Boy's basement-made beer. JC's swing at the par 5 7th at Erin Hills. They're all pretty much the same; velvety smooth.

Our second picture also features JC, this time bunkered at Ballyneal's 13th hole. GPW has never had to worry about this bunker, because it is 328 yards from the tee! (Okay, that is a lie. GPW does worry about this bunker, sometimes on his second shot). This picture is further proof that women want to sleep with JC and men want to be him.

Our third picture has Jefe and JC relaxing at one of golf's most iconic spots; Ben's Porch at Sand Hills. This picture was taken shortly after the round was completed. Take note that Jefe is dispondent and already hitting the bottle after having witnessed (we are all witness) Wyatt play on a different level, a level reserved mostly for professionals, robots and alien life forms. GPW suspects this isn't the first time Wyatt has driven grown men to drink. JC simply wears a Ben Hogan scowl of disapproval.

Our final picture is proof that Jefe is cheating on Caddy Boy. It appears that Jefe is playing a knock down wedge (would this have been CB's advice?) to the par 5 5th green at Lost Dunes, while his rent-a-caddy cheers him on. Is that a box of heart shaped chocolates I see sticking out of Jefe's golf bag?

Lost Dunes Par 4 12th

Today GPW brings you four pictures of the par 4 12th hole at Lost Dunes, measuring 391 yards from the back tee.

The 12th begins with a merciless climb through trees and heavy vegetation to a tee box situated at the highest point of the property. Having to lug Bernie up this incline was no picnic, especially since he is afraid of heights.

However, the climb is worth the effort. The 12th is a firecracker of a hole. As with many of his designs, Tom Doak gives the golfer multiple options on how to play the hole. The first option is to blow the drive over the fairway bunker on the right, just 248 yards to carry. If successful, the player will enjoy a clear line of attack on the second shot. The more conservative line is up the left side of the hole, avoiding the fairway bunker. However, the second shot will be much more difficult from this angle. Four bunkers fronting a shallow green will need to be carried on the approach.

The walk of death continues down a different set of stairs which eventually lead to the fairway. Bernie received multiple splinters in his head as his dome kept cracking up against the rickety fence posts.

The final picture shows the view from the right hand side of the hole. If the fairway bunker is carried off the tee, the player will have roughly 145 yards to an open green and accessible hole location, perhaps leading to birdie.

Ballyneal Par 3 11th

Today GPW brings you two pictures of the Ballyneal's par 3 11th.

The 11th plays anywhere from 145 yards all the way back to 200 yards. Depending on the tee selected, the hole may play seriously uphill or perhaps slightly downhill. The player may see all of the green on the tee shot, or almost none of it. There are more options at the 11th than a fat man has going through a buffet line at Thanksgiving.

After the tee has been selected, getting the ball to the green is challenging. The green sits atop a large sand hill, making it one of the most exposed green sites on the course. In high winds, the 11th can be dangerous. The preferred miss is right of the green (up near the Sherpa, A.K.A. caddy). Several bunkers are found below the green, including this vicious pot bunker on the right side. GPW's advice is to laser a hybrid 4 iron to 3 feet, as evidenced in the second picture, and drain the birdie putt to go 3 up on some poor sap from FL named Bo.

Black Sheep Par 3 8th

Today GPW brings you two pictures of the par 3 8th hole at Black Sheep.

The 8th hole measures 175 yards from the back tee, however, in the pictures, taken from the front tee, the distance is only 140 yards. The 8th is a tricky golf hole. The prevailing wind is from behind the player and to the left. Understanding the wind is pivotal to scoring well at the 8th. The native grasses in front of the green, and a severe bank short, force the player to fly the ball all the way to the green.

The correct play is to aim at the bunker right and behind the green, working the ball left. Aiming at a hazard is a difficult mental hurdle for most golfers, but it is the sane course of action at the 8th. While over the ball, many golfers will try to execute this shot, but, cannot pull it off (see GPW) or cannot bare the thought of NOT aiming at a flag (see Jefe & JC). A pulled tee shot or a too aggressive line left will madly ride the wind like Jefe rides his caddy when he hits a bad shot (just ask Caddy Boy how he really got that bum knee). The wind will carry the ball left of the green and into head high prairie grass, never to be seen again, which, one day, is something GPW fully expects to happen to Caddy Boy*.

*GPW has a $1M life insurance policy on CB.

Sand Hills Par 3 3rd

Today GPW brings you the par 3 3rd hole at legendary Sand Hills.

The 3rd measures 216 yards from the back tee. From the elevated box, the player can see miles and miles of empty and desolate and rolling sand hills. In other words, perfect land for golf.

The hole plays straight down hill. A sand ridge perhaps 100 yards from the green partially obscures the front portion of the green. The green is elongated (like GPW's skull) and sits on a diagonal. The putting surface has more ridges and swales than GPW has excuses for shooting 84. The only bailout is short of the green. There's no getting rid of it, no matter how much it may cause you to itch. GPW is back!

Today GPW brings you three pictures of a world class golf hole; the par 4 11th at Ballybunion's Old course.

The 11th measures 453 yards from the back tee, however, it will likely play shorter than that. The tee is located high atop the dunes. From here, the player can see the entire hole, as it tumbles down the dunes toward the sea. The sea is very much in play here. The prevailing wind blows in from sea, forcing the player to aim just inside the OB stakes on his drive. The majority of the back nine plays through the enormous dunes seen on the horizon.

The second shot at Ballybunion's 11th is one of the world's great second shots. The hole continues to fall down the dunes, the fairway a mess of ridges and rolling humps. The green sits just steps from the sea, well below the player's position. From here, the crescent beach and Irish countryside are in full view. Once again, the player will have to factor the wind, likely starting his approach right of the green.

The front of the green is guarded by two steep dunes. The opening between them is no more than 15 feet wide. These dunes force the player to fly the ball all the way to the green on the approach. There are few holes in the world like Ballybunion's 11th.

Lost Dunes Par 3 5th

Today GPW brings you the par 3 5th hole at Lost Dunes.

Frankly, GPW has never experienced such venom and outrage from his subscribers, all over the tardiness of this post. Think LeBron's return to Clevland times 10! Before GPW leaves work today he is having an annoying co-worker start his car.

On to the picture. The 5th plays significantly downhill. The tee is somewhat sheltered by trees to the player's left, while the green rests peacefully at the bottom of the hill. Long views are offered here, as the 6th and 7th holes can be seen from the 5th box.

The bunker fronting the green is an issue, forcing the player to fly the ball all the way to the putting surface. This plays right into the hands of Tommy D., the mad architect of Lost Dunes. The green tilts from front to back, so shots launched into the heavens will likely not hold the crazy deep green, but instead trickle to the back, where three wacking is highly likely.

Royal County Down Par 3 7th

Today GPW brings you (on time) the par 3 7th hole at Royal County Down.

On the card, the 7th looks like a breather on a crazy demanding and difficult golf course. The hole measures just 145 yards and the green is 32 paces deep. However, the 7th hole can be trickery than Jefe's offensive scheme for Atari football circa 1983. (Jefe aired it out on virtually every play and racked up more points, at GPW's expense, than people own guns in Texas)

The view is obscured by a deep pot bunker that fronts the green. At best, standing on the tee, the golfer can see the top of the flag. The green is tilted somewhat away from the golfer. A large bunker left of the hole and two more behind the green are completely hidden on the tee shot. It is a thrilling moment for the golfer, watching his tee ball sail toward the mountains and then over the bunker and out of view.

Super Swing Saturday

Due to an overindulgence of turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls and raspberry beer sent from Caddie Boy (quite good), GPW completely forgot about Fine Form Friday, originally scheduled to air on Black Friday. Other than saving hundreds of dollars a year on haircuts, your every move on the golf course is studied, analyzed and admired by all. In our first picture, at Ballyneal, Jefe's splendid form is captured from two angles; one by GPW and the other by Jimmy C.

Is it utter? Is it butter? (replace "butter" with "stutter" and you get GPW's swing) If you answered yes to the first two questions, then it must be Jimmy "Utter Butter" Colton's approach at the par 4 12th hole at Ballyneal. This is also the last known picture of Yoda. R.I.P. OB lines the entire right side of the hole. A nasty fairway bunker, located left center, 235 yards from the tee, waits to inhale a pulled drive. With OB right, the player must bravely thread a drive between the bunker and OB to have any hopes of making par. To make matters worse, this hole plays directly toward the sea, and thus, usually directly into the wind.

The green is literally ringed by low dunes. There is an absence of bunkers around the green.

A view from behind the green gives you a sense of just how narrow the 4th is. The tee box is elevated, giving the player a commanding view of the hole. The hole turns hard to the left and the green is hidden from view by trees. The tee ball should be played left center to trim yardage off the hole and give the player a good look at the stick on the second shot.

As with most greens at Cog Hill, the putting surface is elevated, a somewhat redundant design feature. The 4th hole plays somewhat downhill to a fairly narrow fairway. The bunker off the right edge of the fairway must be avoided on the drive. The centerline bunker is only reachable for the biggest hitters.

The drive really isn't the problem at the 4th. The real problem for the golfer is the crazy shallow green. A right flag location, as shown in the second picture, is without question the most difficult segment of the green to access. Here, the green can't be more than 10 paces deep. The green has a false front and the back falls off sharply. The player's approach needs to be super exact and sticky in order for it to find the putting surface.

The Prairie Club

GPW Nation, all seven of them, know that The Prairie Club was on the hit list for last summer. The hole turns hard from left to right off the tee. The more aggressive line a player takes off the tee, closer to the tree line right, the shorter the golf hole becomes. The more conservative a player is off the box, the longer the hole becomes. Fairway bunkers through the turn on the left are like burrito cravings at 2:00 am; avoid them at all costs, unless you enjoy pain.

The green is somewhat open in front, as most greens are at Bowes Creek. However, if a forward tee is selected, the hole can actually play slightly uphill. Part of the brilliance of Ballyneal is the diversity and elasticity of the golf holes, particularly the par 3's.

Like GPW's forehead, the green is expansive. For whatever reason, in three privileged visits to Ballyneal, GPW has played this hole remarkably well.

However, the 15th isn't all lollipops and puppy dogs. The third picture, taken from behind the green shows just how large the putting surface is. Getting the tee ball on the same quadrant as the pin is key. The 15th green is rolling, with multiple tiers and ridges to negotiate.

The final picture shows another set of wooden stairs leading away from the 15th, on the way to the 16th box.

Waterville Par 3 4th

Today GPW brings you Waterville's par 3 4th hole.

The 4th measures 185 yards and play through a narrow corridor of dunes. Today, we've got 4 pictures of GPW subscribers in action on the links.

What is a hot dog really made up of? Did the U.S. government really recover an alien spacecraft in the desert outside Roswell, New Mexico in the 1940's? Has Wyatt Halliday ever hit a poor golf shot? No one really knows the answers to these questions because photographic evidence has never been produced. Until now.

The first picture shows the powerful build and swing of one Wyatt Halliday, at the 14th hole of Sand Hills, all captured at the moment of impact.

The second picture shows Wyatt's reaction of pure disgust at the poorly struck shot, the club carelessly tossed aside, just like GPW's heart has been tossed aside in the game of love. This is the only known photo of Wyatt hitting a bad golf shot. GPW took note that Wyatt's 3 wood was 7 feet off line and only went 279 yards instead of the typical 295 yards. Amateur hour, indeed.

The next photo is of Mike Wagner at the 18th green of Erin Hills, at sunset. Mike has just endured a round of golf with GPW, Jefe and JC. Navy SEALS go through a training course which is legendary for testing the mental toughness of candidates. GPW has long thought if the SEALS really wanted to find out how mentally tough a guy is, just have him play a round of golf with Jefe, JC and GPW. It is a nutso golf hole. This picture was taken from behind the green, which sits hard by the cliffs and ocean. The green isn't visible until the third shot. The approach is launched into the heavens from the extreme right edge of the photo. You can see a golfer standing in the fairway from where the third shot is played. From this position, the green is well over 100 feet below the player, its width only 24 paces wide. In high winds, anything can happen on the third shot at the 17th, including rinsing one in the ocean.

Royal County Down Par 4 2nd

Today GPW brings you three pictures of the par 4 2nd at Royal County Down, measuring 444 yards from the tips.

The 2nd resembles the type of women that GPW unfortunately is attracted to: tricky and full of pitfalls. Drundrum Bay and the beach are to the player's right, just a stones throw away. The more immediate problem is the drive, which is entirely blind. A low dune obscures any view of the fairway, which is slinky and narrow. A small white rock atop the dune, shown in the first picture, gives the player the line.

Once over the dune, things do not get easier. The second picture shows a cross bunker, which is located at the end of the fairway, 50 yards from the green. This bunker makes the drive all important. If the player hits the fairway off the tee, then lobbing a shot over the bunker isn't much of a problem. However, if the fairway is missed and the ball is buried in the rough, then the player must decide if he will challenge the bunker or lay up. The closer a player is to the bunker, the less of the green he can see. Two smaller baby bunkers, hidden from view, are found just yards beyond the mother bunker. Madness.

The green is 36 paces deep, perhaps only 20 paces wide. It is a very difficult target to hit, especially considering the second shot is likely semi-blind. Two bunkers are benched into the left side of the green, one of which unmercifully gobbled up GPW's ball and began a beat down of GPW, the likes of which he hasn't seen since his marriage.

Geneva National-Player Par 5 14th

Today GPW brings you four pictures of the 14th at Geneva National's Player course, which is one of the better holes found on the layout, and, the site of Jefe's most recent "incident" in a long line of "incidents" with player assistants, A.K.A. rangers, or, as Jefe would refer to them, "dirty dogs".

Standing on the tee, unaware of the drama and trauma about to unfold, stand Jefe and JC. At this point, in one of the gayest pictures you'll see anywhere, everyone is all smiles.

The 14th plays dramatically downhill, measuring only 491 yards from the back tee. The tee ball is played out of a shoot of trees. The hole wings off to the left. Players challenging the tree line on the left can shave off yards and set themselves up for a go at the green in two. A safer shot to the meaty portion of the fairway, right, means the player will need three shots to get home.

The landing area is rather flat. Most tee balls that successfully challenged the left hand side will end up here, giving the player a shot of roughly 200 yards into the green.

The green is open in the front, allowing a long, low second shot to bounce into the green. The green also has several tiers, and is sloped severely from back to front. JC easily birdied the hole with a tap in, Jefe made a two putt par and GPW struggled with a three wack bogey, which, in a nutshell, accurately sums up the lives of all three.

Take special note of the cart signs promptly displayed in the middle of the fairway, 80 yards from the green. These would become a point of contention as Jefe decided to ignore them and drive his cart some 50 yards further up and to the right, into the trees, rough, and near a creek in search of his lost ball, bringing down upon himself the fire and fury of the player assistant.

GPW will leave you with Jefe's words, describing what happened on that fateful day....

"On the whole it was a chilly but clear day. On the 14th hole, however, as the ranger approached, he seemed to bring a dark cloud with him, as nearly all rangers do. I knew I was ahead of the cart signs. However, I subscribe to George Costanza's advice to Jerry about beating lie detectors, when he said, 'Jerry, it's not a lie if YOU believe it.'

So I went this route and went on the offensive. It's true that I said 'What did I do?!?' except, I knew full what I did, but, come on, I was in the rough and not on the fairway. Rangers are like dogs in that you can't show them fear. You do, and you're toast. When I was seven years old I was attacked by a German Sheppard after trying to outrun it, so I learned this lesson the hard way. I should have turned about face and wrestled that dirty dog to the ground when I had the chance 30 years ago and strangled it with its own collar. I've decided to take that tack with all rangers since that day.

Surprisingly though, the ranger was not reprimanding me for violating the cart sign rule, rather he was telling me to not go over the bridge. I didn't read the sign on the bride because the cart path was positioned such that it seemed very obvious that you SHOULD cross the bridge. As a matter of fact, if you had crossed that bridge, the cart path was right next to the green and there was plenty of room to turn around and re-cross the bridge if there was not an exit. This guy was acting like if I crossed the bridge the cart would drop directly into the firery pits of hell on the other side. I wouldn't have even cared but instead of telling me to not use the bridge he instead had to to ask if I had read the sign, presumably to make me feel stupid and assert his dominance. I obliged, however, and Colton took the cart to the other side while I calmly chalked up another GIR and 2 putted for a routine par after another routine encounter with those blowhards known as Rangers, or, as you might find them at nicer clubs, 'Player Assistants'.

Colton pointed out that maybe rangers are hard on me because they know that someday I will be one of them and this is their hazing of me. This could quite possibly be the case."

-Jefe
