Golf’s ruling bodies, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Britain’s R&A, have established that beyond the rules of golf that are always in effect, certain “local rules” may be adopted by the local committee. The use of distance measuring devices has long been prohibited by the rules of golf, but in 2006, the USGA and R&A adopted Rule 14/3b, which allowed for the use of rangefinders if specified by “local rule”. Many golf courses have “Local Rules” printed on their scorecard for everyday play and most golf tournaments will have a “Local Rules Sheet” specifying the applicable rules.

The PGA, LPGA and most of the other professional golf tours do no utilize the local rule, so that’s why you don’t see Tiger Woods or Stacy Lewis using one on the weekend. However, you can bet that they and their caddies are using them during preparation and practice rounds. For it’s own tournaments, the USGA also does not allow the use of rangefinders.

The LPGA Legends Tour does allow rangefinders, as do many State Opens. The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), which runs tournaments for the top junior players in the world, does not allow rangefinders. High School golf associations have had to address the issue and it may vary from state to state or tournament to tournament.

If you compete in tournaments, you will definitely want to check the rules sheet or ask the committee before you tee it up. Club organizations and leagues usually have rules that are always in effect and if you’re unsure, check with the committee or local golf professional

If you’re just playing for fun, check the scorecard for a local rule. If it’s not there and you have any bets, you and your opponents can make the decision together or have the local pro decide. If there are no bets, that’s when you become your own committee and decide that the rangefinder local rule is definitely in effect!

If you are looking for a rangefinder or GPS waterproof case, you might want to consider the Clicgear Valuables Bag. It’s designed for the Clicgear golf push cart or any cart that uses 1″ handle tubing, but that’s no reason to limit its uses. It would work in the front of a golf cart or in the side of your bag and you can probably figure a way to hang it on the outside of your bag if you normally ride in a golf cart.

The case is made from waterproof nylon and has both a zipper and magnetic closure. The magnetic closure will come in handy for during your rounds when you don’t want to mess with a zipper. The zipper is great for between rounds.

IF you have a larger rangefinder, like the Bushnell 1600 or the Bushnell Pro 1M, this bag may be a little too tight, but most of today’s rangefinders will work well in this bag.

Aside from the metronome, we don’t really see any features that set the Voice Caddie VC200 apart. The competition comes from I’m Caddie and Golf Buddy Voice. On features alone, the Voice Caddie VC200 does not measure up and the low price probably isn’t low enough to make up for the shortcomings. However we hope to give it a fair shot by taking it out for a test.

In the mean time, we suggest you look at the Golf Buddy Voice. It has several features that we think are important and the price is competitive with the VC200 or the I’m Caddie. Besides that, user feedback on Golf Buddy’s talking GPS has been excellent.

In golf, you need to know two things about distance.

Probably the easiest way to get a good sense of how far you’re hitting your clubs is to buy a device like a Garmin G6, that allows you to measure each shot and record the club used. It keeps track of the details, so once you’ve hit enough shots with each club, it will give you a very good idea of how far you hit your clubs.

The only problem with that method is that conditions can really affect the distance a golf ball travels. Wind, elevation and roll will make a huge difference and your golf GPS doesn’t record that information. So without making this process too cumbersome, what do you do?

Best case scenario… if you can get to a golf course at a time of day when there isn’t much traffic, go when conditions are calm. Drop a half dozen balls in the fairway at what you believe to be 7-iron distance. Take your time, hit the shots and repair your divots. Use the shot measuring feature on your golf GPS to mark the spot. Now you can go to the longest of your shots and check the GPS distance. Pace to the shortest ball and record that distance as well.  Only record shots with which you made decent contact. Now you have a range of how far you’re likely to hit your 7-iron. You may want to do this with more shots, but you get the idea. 

Don’t assume you hit 10 yards different between clubs. If you have time, repeat this process for every other club in your bag. You can probably learn just about everything you need to know in a couple of hours on the golf course.

With the U.S. team leading by six points after the first two days, it’s hard to imagine there would be much criticism, but the rumblings started before the afternoon matches ever began on Saturday. Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods  lost two matches on Friday and sitting out the Saturday morning matches. The truth is, many of us were hoping to see Tiger go out with Keegan Bradley on Saturday afternoon, since it seemed like Phil Mickelson wanted a break before the Sunday singles.  Instead, Stricker and Woods were paired again, while Bradley had to find some place other than the golf course to release his energy on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, Woods and Stricker only added to their losing record.

The reason for sitting both Keegan and Phil was stated by both Captain Love and team leader Mickelson… “statistically playing all five matches makes you less likely to win in singles.” In hindsight, it’s easy to see how talking about that statistic is a really bad idea. It totally commits the captain to resting every single player at least one match in the first two days. If you don’t, you’ve already told the guy playing all five, that he’s more likely to lose his singles match. Statistics are great for planning, but there was no need to be talking about that particular piece of information. In the heat of battle, a good leader needs to go with his gut instincts and not be bound by statistics.

But even so, does anyone have any business criticizing a U.S. Team that is six points ahead going into singles matches?

The most obvious thing to criticize about Davis Love III in the Sunday singles defeat, is the lineup. Personally, when I saw it, I was disappointed that Tiger Woods’ match was not going to matter. It turns out that it didn’t matter, but not in the way that I expected. Apparently Captain Love took the input of the players and used that to determine the order. Perhaps if it had been closer, he and his assistants would have agonized over the order and done something different. But honestly, most of those guys in the top of the lineup were playing well and having success. I don’t think any of the critics were really up in arms over the order before Sunday play began.

After the shock of losing, the critics remembered who they really wanted to see on this U.S. Ryder Cup team. Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan were watching it on TV and they are the future of the game. Why didn’t Davis Love pick either of them? If you look back at all the tweets before Davis made his picks, not many were saying Stricker or Furyk should be left off the team… but in hindsight, the criticisms come quickly. Steve Stricker lost all four of his matches and Jim Furyk was 1 & 2. Both lost critical points on Sunday by losing the last two holes. Perhaps the critics have forgotten Hunter Mahan’s chunked chip in a critical moment of the 2010 Ryder Cup or that Fowler went 0-1-2.

Other disenchanted fans have even dared to say that Davis Love’s focus on having fun is what cost the U.S. the Ryder Cup. Yeah, right. There is little question that up until the Sunday collapse, the U.S. Team was having fun. It seemed to most of us on the outside, that there was more team camaraderie than we had seen before. Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley were the poster boys for this enthusiasm of playing with a partner and their golf reflected it on Days 1 & 2. Bubba Watson’s energy in foursomes and fourball, gave American fans a thrill they had never felt before, as he hit his opening tee shots while they cheered. The tables truly had been turned with the U.S. team showing passion for team play.  Isn’t that the biggest complaint the fans and media have had about previous U.S. teams?

That’s why I’d like to see Davis Love III get another shot at captaining the U.S. Ryder Cup team. I think he had his team in the right frame of mind. Possibly one of the hundreds of decisions he made could have changed the outcome, but maybe not. Maybe the spirit of Seve Ballesteros was too strong. Either way, I’d like to see the U.S. team having that much fun on Friday and Saturday again in 2014. I would definitely bet on Captain Love and any team of U.S. players he might lead, if he brought that same attitude one more time.

• Izzo Swami 3000 – Don’t worry about buying the least expensive golf GPS on the market. If your golfer doesn’t yet own any type of distance measuring device, it’s extremely likely that he or she will love this device. Users reviews are excellent. The price point is low because the features are basic, but plenty of golfers prefer the simplicity of a small basic golf GPS. It provides distance to the front, middle and back of every green, and that’s more than enough information for most golfers. There is a less expensive model, the Izzo Swami 1500, but the 3000 has all the golf courses pre-loaded, so it’s a much better deal.

Gift Budget: $100 – $150

• Izzo Swami Golf Watch – Golf watches have become extremely popular and this one is definitely the most affordable. It’s a basic golf GPS with distance to front, middle and back of the greens, and it also includes a scorecard and shot measuring feature. On top of all that, we really like it’s sporty appearance! As this is a brand new model in late 2012, there aren’t many user ratings yet, but Izzo has a history of products that score very well with golfers.
• Bushnell neo+ – We love the neo+ and user reviews show that most golfers love it too! It’s pre-loaded with golf courses and provides distances to the front, middle and back of the greens as well as to key hazards. The price, the size and the ease of use, make this one of the most popular golf GPS devices on the market today. Be careful not to get this model confused with its predecessor, the Bushnell neo.
• Golf Buddy Voice – The ratings on this little device are excellent. It’s very basic and easy to use. It give distances to the front, middle and back of every green and allows you to measure your shots. As indicated by the name, it also provides voice distances for golfers who have difficulty seeing a traditional screen.

Gift Budget: $150 – $225

• Garmin Approach S1 Golf Watch – This extremely popular and highly rated golf watch offers only distance to the front, middle and back of all greens, along with shot measuring. It’s easy to use and extremely convenient!
• Golf Buddy Tour – This is a nice hand-held unit with great color, big numbers and the green layouts. The ratings are terrific and the price is right!

Gift Budget: $225 – $300

• Garmin Approach G6 – This small full-featured hand-held unit from Garmin is a big hit with users. It has a wonderful color touchscreen and full hole views. Definitely consider buying this one if it’s in your budget.
• Garmin Approach G5 – The predecessor to the G6 is larger and maybe not as bright, but it has good ratings and will cost quite a bit less. It’s also a full featured unit with a color touchscreen.
• Callaway Diablo Octane Laser Rangefinder – If you’re buying for a good golfer, you might want to think about buying laser instead of GPS. Laser rangefinders are more accurate and often preferred by lower handicap golfers. The Callaway Diablo Octane rangefinder is highly rated and reasonably priced.

Over $300

• Bushnell Hybrid – This is the best of the best because it combines laser and GPS in a single device. The GPS operates like the Bushnell neo+ and the laser is equivalent to the Bushnell V2. Both do their job quite well. If you’re looking to score big points with the best golf gift ever, put this on your short list!
• Garmin Approach S3 Golf Watch - Perhaps the most appealing of all the golf watches on the market. The S3 provides distances to the front, middle and back of every green, as well as distances to key hazards and green views so you can manually reposition the pin. Garmin also added a sophisticated scorecard feature to the S3. Somehow they put all these features in a nice looking sports watch with a touchscreen and still made it easy to use.

There are plenty of golf gifts available that will wind up in the back of the closet, but if you want to make the golfer in your life, really happy, a GPS or laser golf rangefinder will be the gift that keeps on giving. You see, most golfers see improvement in their scores soon after they begin using one.

Our first glance at the specs and features has us shaking our heads and wanting to send you straight over to our Best GPS for Golf article.

We keep hoping SkyCaddie will get the message that golfers don’t want to pay annual fees and deal with downloading golf courses each time they decide to play a new course. When we saw the name “BREEZE”, we though for sure this would be the one. But no, not only are there annual fees, but SkyCaddie offers other ways to increase the price of their latest GPS rangefinder, by offering “Feature Packs”.

Here’s how it works… The SkyCaddie BREEZE comes preloaded with “up to 30,000″ golf courses. However, the only information it provides is distance to the front, middle and back of every green. The screen looks to be bright and the numbers are big. It has a shot measuring feature and a one-player scorecard feature. That’s about it for the unit unless you choose to spend the money for an Feature Pack or two or three.

Even though it’s extremely basic in features,you still must purchase an annual membership. It’s not totally clear what membership packages will be for the SkyCaddie BREEZE without any of the Feature Packs, but we think $19.99 annually. If you pay for the Feature packs, the annual fees may be even higher. The membership fees for the SkyCaddie SGX are in the $30 – $60 range, so that would be our guess.

From where we sit, if you want a basic golf GPS, skip the SkyCaddie Breeze and look at the Golf Buddy Tour or the Bushnell neo+. Neither one has any fees, plus you’ll get distances to hazards and you’ll definitely pay less for the device.

SkyCaddie offers three different “Feature Packs” and so far, we don’t see any pricing information. Even if they were free, we’d still be unlikely to recommend the SkyCaddie BREEZE. Besides annual fees, you have to download the courses if you want the extra features. There are several full-featured GPS devices available that come preloaded with full hole layouts and never charge any fees. The Garmin Approach G6 may be a little more expensive on the front end, but by the time you pay fees and buy Upgrade Packs, it’s probably similar in price… and you won’t have to deal with decisions and downloads. You just buy it, charge it and go play golf.

The good part is that all of the golf course maps will be updated with the latest information. The process should only take a few minutes.

4. It’s fast and accurate. You’re not likely to have to wait when you arrive at your ball for the Bushnell neo+ to settle on the correct distance. Users report that it’s really quick to acquire the correct yardage. The neo+ utilizes the iGolf database of golf courses, which is one of, if not the best database available. Overall, users report feeling very satisfied with the accuracy of this device.
5. The price is right! It really may be the best value in a golf GPS rangefinder. Golf watches with similar features cost quite a bit more and other units that are similarly priced and sized, often don’t provide distances to hazards. The Bushnell neo+ seems to have a found sweet spot in the GPS rangefinder market.

“Leupold GX Battery”

Single Battery

You won’t need to replace it often, but you definitely want to carry an extra battery for your Leupold GX-1 Rangefinder. Leupold says their rangefinders go 10,000 actuations on a single battery, so the cost of batteries over the life of you GX-1 is going to be pretty insignificant. I bet most golfers will not need a new battery for at least a year. One of the best parts of a laser rangefinder is that you never have to charge it and you can keep an extra battery in your golf bag, so when the time comes, you won’t miss a shot.

If you have another model in the Leupold GX Series of golf rangefinders, to date (through the GX-4i) they all take a CR2 battery.

When you see the battery indicator on you GX-1 get low (most of the black inside that icon will disappear), make sure you’ve got your replacement battery ready.

To insert a new battery, remove the battery cover (shown below) and remove the old battery. Insert your new CR-2 battery, negative terminal first, in to the battery compartment. Close battery cover and you’re good to go!
