Ultimate Golf Fantasy

Recently an editor spoke to me about doing an article dealing with the ultimate golf fantasy. I thought it made sense to speak with some friends to see what kinds of dreams they had and what their idea of the ultimate golf fantasy might be.

Early feedback was pretty overwhelming and it was kind of surprising. Handicap and occupation had little to do with the response and the desire to play a certain "goat track" in Georgia.

Chris Obert is a scratch player and head golf professional of Millwood Golf and Racquet Club in Springfield. Chris had the same response as did American Airlines manager and 30-handicapper Mike Fink. Now, I realize my previous comment alone probably made some peoples skin crawl. It is probably the most desired course to play in the world.

Augusta National, these two words send shivers down the spine of true golf enthusiasts. It seems not even the glorious ocean views of Pebble Beach can compete with Magnolia Lane. I was surprised to hear talk of just a simple round of golf at Augusta. Hey, how about playing in the annual event? How about playing in the final group on Sunday? How about taking a group of friends and staying for a week in the Butler cabin? It seems like winning a British Open or US Open pales in comparison to a simple round of golf at Augusta. Perhaps you have had visions, as I have, of hoisting that big cardboard check over your head. How many of us have dreamed of a final round like David Duval had at the Bob Hope where he shot a 59? For most players, 59 is a good 12 hole total. Hey, forget the US Open, how about Annika's trip around Colonial several years ago? It was big news around the world and left a lot of us wishing we could walk in her shoes.

I will probably never play a PGA tour event at Colonial. But I can sure dream about it as I stroll around my home course. Standing over the putt that could win the Ryder Cup!

It is funny how age and our declining athletic ability rob us of fantasies relating to other sports. I know I will never dive into the hole, jump up, and throw out that runner going to first. I must admit that my 50 extra pounds would make me a heck of a line-backer. At least until that 225 pound running back left his foot print on my sagging chest. Golf allows us to keep our dreams and to excel well into our golden years.

Swing Instruction

The contribution of the body to the golf swing has been over emphasized for years. I guess one reason for this fact is that body positions were easy to point out in a golf magazine. Problem is, the over use of the body or excess body motion continues to be the killer of the golf swing for many a golfer, holding them back from their true potential. The body has such a small territory to cover in the downswing while the arms have so far to travel that you MUST start your downswing with your arms or you will travel over the top on your downswing causing you to pull the ball and more importantly release the power angle created at the top of your backswing too early.

Another by product of starting your shoulders first on the downswing is swinging on too steep a plane during your approach to the golf ball. You can get away with swinging a little steep with a wedge up to a seven iron. Once you get in to the longer clubs you need to get the arms going first so the club shallows out on the approach.

The lie angle on a wedge (the lie angle is a measurement from the center of the shaft to the ground in degrees) would be about 64 degrees. On a driver the lie angle is 55 degrees. All clubs are swung on plane, being the shaft angle at address and every golf club has it’s own plane. The longer the golf club the flatter or more shallow the plane. To get the longer clubs to shallow out you need to start your arms earlier on the down swing. Ben Hogan described his downswing as like pulling an arrow out of a quiver. Tiger Woods says his down swing feels like his arms are falling out of the sky in front of his chest. Al Geiberger said the downswing was like ringing a bell. You may think he has a funny swing but watch how he drops his arms first on the down swing. Many a golfer like Jim Furyk, (Tony Lema, Lee Trevino, Freddy Couples) swing steep on the back swing so they can fall to a shallow position on the downswing. Taking the golf club back low and behind you might cause you to swing steep on the down swing because you need to turn your shoulders first to get the golf club out in front of you to get to the golf ball.

Pretend like you’re facing 12 o’clock while at the address position. Hold that position in your chest and head and start pumping the golf club down with your arms holding the body perfectly still. Try to put the stick in the ground at the same angle as the shaft on your golf club. Take the golf club back outside the stick and bring it down to the ball inside the stick. Whatever drill you use get your arms going first! Swing like a pirate…use your arrrrrms!

Golf Galaxy (GGXY) owns and operates a chain of golf specialty retail stores primarily in the northern and midwestern United States. The company offers golf equipment, apparel, accessories and gifts, as well as various golf services such as video instruction, equipment and club fitting. Golf Galaxy opened 11 new stores during the first six months of fiscal 2007. As of August 26, 2006, they operate 61 superstores in 24 states, e-Commerce websites and a catalog. Many of there stores are located in midwestern and northeastern states where late spring and summer represent the peak of the golf season. The Father’s Day holiday in June drives a significant seasonal sales increase, and sales also increase during the December holiday season, albeit to a lesser extent.

Due to the seasonal nature of their business, interim results are not necessarily indicative of results for the entire fiscal year. Net sales and net income are generally greatest during the first and second quarters of our fiscal year. Net sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2007 were $95.6 million, an increase of 37.4% compared with $69.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2006. The increase in net sales for both the fiscal second quarter and six month period ended August 26, 2006, resulted primarily from sales at new stores opened in the current or prior fiscal year, sales through The GolfWorks, which Golf Galaxy acquired on March 16, 2006; and, to a lesser degree, an increase in comparable store sales.

Golf Galaxy is still a rather small retailer, with only about $200 million in fiscal 2006 sales, yet it grew sales by 50% last year and predicts 52%-57% growth this year. The number of golfers in the USA has been fairly stagnant for a few years now, and according to the National Golf Foundation, the number of rounds of golf played in 2005 was down slightly from 2004, which was also the first year in the previous three years that the number had actually increased. In the recent CIBC World Markets report covering the sporting goods sector, Golf Galaxy is rated as a sector performer. With Golf Galaxy's shares having fallen 30% year-to-date, we believe the current level has limited downside.
