Surely knocking on the door? Fourth visit to the Texas Open and no luck so far, but comes in off a T8 at The Players and with a lot of stars away, has a big scramblers chance.

Alex Noren 35/1

43 years old now and still one of the best grinders out there. Averaging top 30 lately. T15 here in 2023, T14 in 2024, and if the wind blows, Alex will stick in where others will fade.

Keith Mitchell 45/1

Three top-20's from 4 starts here and gives it plenty of welly off the tee. Still ranking 18th in SG: Tee-to-Green. Great each way look.

Si Woo Kim 22/1

On fire at the start of the season with a couple of million bucks banked after the Am-Ex, Farmers and Phoenix (T6,T2,T3). Solid T13 last week at the Arnie. Former winner here with two top-10's since. The bookies have Si Woo squeezed into 22/1 but there's still enough value for a small each way bet.

Ludvig Aberg 22/1

T3 last week and great to see Ludvig back hitting his stride. Only his third appearance, MC'd last year but was solo 8th on debut. The smile is back, the health is good, I think a little flutter at 22/1 is value for money for a quality ball striker on the toughest of tracks.

Matt Fitzpatrick 30/1

Mixed fortunes here for Matt and mixed fortunes of late on Tour really. T9 in 2021, solo 5th in 2024 and nothing really besides. Just not quite putting four solid rounds together quite yet, but in that 2024 performance I saw Matt having the tools for this course, driving, irons, and especially short game.

Sepp Straka 40/1

Level headed-ness is a huge advantage around Sawgrass. Sepp has three top-20's from his last four visits here and comes in off improved form. T2 at Pebble and in contention at Bay Hill until a poor final round dropped him to T13. Nevertheless a solid each way look.

Adam Scott 60/1

There's no way in the World Adam Scott should be at 60/1 here. Take those odds if you can get them. Scott shot two rounds of 63 at the Genesis, and was T11 last week. He's a former winner here, albeit 22 years ago, but with three other top-10's and 10 top-25's here, those odds are a gift.

Nicolai Hojgaard 80/1

Improving through the Am Ex, Farmers, Phoenix to a T9 at PGA National. It's only his second Players, and he missed the cut first time, but those long odds, with talent like his, seem tempting.

Brian Harman 250/1

Spotted poor old Brian down at 250/1. Playing shite of late, but I will tell you something. TPC Sawgrass is built for him. He might well pop it down the middle, and pop it onto the greens while all around him find the trouble. He's done that in every one of his four top-10's here. It's time to shoot some endangered species this week Brian!!

With rain forecast Fri, Sat and Sun it could play into Shane's hands even more. Deserves his W here.

Ryan Gerard (16/1)

Making waves with runner-up finishes this year at the Sony and the American Express. Lives down the road and famously finished 4th as a Monday qualifier in 2023.

Nicolai Højgaard (25/1)

Another class act. T3 last time out in Phoenix where he scrambled well. T18 here in 2025 and with his current confidence, those 25/1 odds feel like the best value on the board.

Michael Thorbjornsen (25/1)

6 top-10's in the last 12 months for the bomber Thorbjornsen. T3 at the WM Phoenix Open, but couldn't open the shoulders at Riviera last week. T39 here on debut last year and opened with two 67's. With more nouse behind him now he could be worth an each way look.

Keith Mitchell (28/1)

A steady eddie for PGA National. Winner in 2019, he will hit the fairways on the back nine and never does anything too daft. Tends to putt better on Bermudagrass which gives him a chance.

Tommy Fleetwood (18/1)

Great odds largely because Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are in the field. He’s coming off a T4 last week at Pebble Beach, really as a result of his great putting—105 total putts, which was second in the field. Nine-under cumulatively on the Par 4s and 11-under on the Par 5s with 24 birdies. That stands Tommy in great stead coming to Riviera, where he was tied 10th in 2024 and tied fifth last year when the event moved to bombers paradise Torrey Pines. A great each-way bet.

Hideki Matsuyama (22/1)

Great, but very busy, start to the season. I’m a little bit worried that Hideki might be "over-cooked." Top 15 in every start since the Sony Open. He improved to a T11 in the Farmers, he was solo second in Phoenix, and tied 8th last week at Pebble Beach. Again, down to great putting—he was T2 in the field in putting in Phoenix and T5 in the field in Monterrey last week. Scoring heavily on Par 3s is also a great sign that his irons are good. The 2024 champion here, among four career top tens, solid bet.

Patrick Cantlay (25/1)

You just cannot leave Cantlay off your betslip here for Riviera. Four top tens and three top fives in the last three years: 3rd in 2023 and T4 in 2024 (both at Riviera), and T5 last year at Torrey. After a bad start with a 74 at Pebble last week, he recovered with rounds of 66, 69, and 65 for a T14 finish. We know he is a great iron player, and it’s all pointing to him being well up there this week.

Maverick McNealy (40/1)

Agonised over this one. Statistically a great West Coast putter. Solo second last year when Riviera was off limit due to wildfires. Comes in off some decent form, 10th at the Farmers and T13 in Phoenix. Add in his Riviera Poa Annua class, and he's a solid pick.

Nick Taylor (66/1)

Purely picked for being my perennial early season specialist!! Specifically winning in January or February in each of the last three seasons. A great iron player, Nick hit 55 greens last week at Pebble, and from his stats I think he is in good stead to make a run at Riviera. At long odds by having no course form, but let's see if that changes.

"Dammit I Totally Forgot About That Idiot"- PGA Tour Boss On Reed Return

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolap cut a dejected figure yesterday as he walked into headquarters with the news that Patrick Reed is to leave LIV and return to the PGA Tour as quickly as he can.

"Ah shit lads, I'm so sorry" Rolap told reporters. When I was coming up with the new ultimatum thingy to entice LIV players back to the PGA Tour on Chat GPT I was thinking of Brooks, Bryson, Jonno and the lads. I honestly totally forgot about that donkey Reed. My bad."

Meanwhile officials in the Kremlin welcomed Reed's return to the PGA Tour. "Anything that keeps them distracted and angry with each other over there is okay by us" a spokesman said.

For his part Patrick Reed is expected to plague fans on the European Tour or whatever its called now, until August, when he's allowed haunt the PGA Tour again.

Is it a foals gallop or can Jayden keep the pre Christmas momentum going. The 24-year-old South African has just won in South Africa and Mauritius, and was 2nd at the Nedbank. Course debutant but hot stuff.

Nicolai Højgaard 14/1

Sneaks along quietly while Rors and co get the headlines. But out here Nicolai is the real deal. Huge hitting gives him a massive desert advantage. Previous winner of the DP World Tour Championship, the Ras Al Khaimah Championship and a danger every time he tees it up.

Thriston Lawrence 35/1

As streaky as they come, but when he's in the mood Thriston is value to watch. The South African knows how to attack and go low in the desert and has the putting stroke for the Paspalum and Bermuda greens found out here. Good man in the wind too, each way chances.

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 28/1

Rasmus has transitioned effortlessly from slaughtering everyone on the Challenge Tour to doing much the same to the big boys in the course of a couple of years. Winner of the Aussie Open last month and has played great in Dubai and Qatar over the past couple of years. I cant imagine he was tucking in to the Quality Street and downing pints over Christmas either; Rasmus will be ready to hit the ground running.

Doc's Top Three Each Way Betting Tips

Alex Noren 25/1

Bagged two million in three weeks late season with wins at the British Masters and PGA, then took time off to chill. Two events to warm back up in the US before a T17 in Abu Dhabi last week. More than the result was dialling back in his irons, 64 greens hit in regulation, T3 in the field. Tied second on his last appearance here in 2022 behind Jon Rahm; I think Alex has a great each way shot again here from crazy odds of 25/1.

Nicolai Hojgaard 16/1

Just missed out on the Fleetwood Rai playoff last week, but pushed all the way with two mammoth shots on the last. In great form, winner here two years ago, that's a no brainer each way bet at 16/1. Overpriced.

Shane Lowry 22/1

I've a good feeling for Shane this week. T12 last week and there weren't many (if any) better than him in birdies, eagles and par-5 scoring. T3 before that in India with almost identical round scoring. Always drives the ball well at Jumeirah Estates and that bodes well. I make it five top-10's here for Shane; from a T8 behind Alvaro Quiros in 2011 to a T3 last year. Thoroughbred horse for the course.

Tom McKibbin 33/1

The move to LIV has proved a master stroke, quite literally. By winning the Hong Kong Open Tom secured an invite to the 2026 Masters and Open Championship. Only his third appearance at Jumeirah Estates but a T11 last year was impressive in the manner he bossed the field in par-5 scoring. A couple more greens in reg this year and good course management, and I think Tom can claim a place.

Thriston Lawrence 70/1

Streakier than a rasher with all the talent in the World. T5 here two years ago with two great rounds of 64 and 66. Winner in Crans this Summer and T3 in India a couple a weeks ago. 70/1 takes into account that hit or miss debate, but I think a small each-way wager might be worth it for the ride. I really hope Mister Lawrence is in the mood.

Why El Gouna In Egypt Is The Best Golf Resort And Holiday Combo In The World

In Ireland and the UK we are almost conditioned now to associate a golf holiday abroad with the usual suspects of Spain, Portugal and Turkey. But having just returned from an EGTMA trip to El Gouna, a Red Sea resort in Egypt, I can honestly say it’s a million times better option for a "golf plus holiday" than anywhere in Europe and maybe the World!! Here's why.

Ease of Travel

Getting to Egypt was far easier than I thought. Direct flights run from Belfast, Dublin and loads of UK airports straight into Hurghada Airport, which is only 30 minutes from El Gouna. The entry process is also super simple — you can purchase an e-visa online for €25, skipping all the queues and avoiding airport stress when you get there.

The flight is about five hours, what's an extra hour on a plane, when you have Netflix to watch and podcasts to listen to. We flew on Easyjet in September, flights were about €250 return (including my golf clubs), and actually cheaper than to most other golf destinations.

Top Class Golf Courses

I honestly did not know what to expect in terms of golf courses in Egypt. This is a desert land after all! But then I remembered how Egypt's ancient civilisations were far more advanced than the rest of us. And I can happily report, they still are!

Before I talk about the courses in detail I want to tell one thing; you will never see grass as green and lush and perfect as on these courses. I mean that. Jaw droppingly good. Augusta good.

And it was only after talking to Mohamed Ashour, Head of Commercial and Business Development of El Gouna on the workings and development of the entire El Gouna resort I realised how incredibly sophisticated and advanced everything here is, and how they overcome challenges, not just to produce and maintain perfect golf courses, but in absolutely everything here to create a special experience for the visitor they wont get anywhere else.

The Courses

Fore Please! Mirella Now Driving

One of the nice things about El Gouna is you have access to not just one, but two completely different golf courses. Between El Gouna Golf Club and Ancient Sands each offers its own challenges, scenery, and playing style.

El Gouna Golf Club

El Gouna Golf Club is the older and more established of the two, designed by Gene Bates in collaboration with Major champion Fred Couples. We were welcomed by the ever smiling Awad Thomas, the Senior Manager of Golf Operations at El Gouna Golf Club.

It’s a beautifully laid-out course that contrasts the Augusta green grass I mentioned with the desert landscape and uses the wide lagoons that meander through the resort.

Just Look At How Perfect The Grass Is!!

On some holes you'll need accurate tee shots to stay dry, while others need decent carry to get over the lagoon. There's a couple of island-style greens too, just to keep your iron game honest.

"What's the best strategy here??"

You can make the course as hard or as easy as you want with plenty of tee box choice and there's generally loads of room off the tees to let rip off the tee. I'm no Freddie Couples design expert but I'm guessing he played a big part in the weighing "risk and reward" style of the course, with plenty of opportunities to take on shots if you’re feeling like Freddie Boom Boom.

How Much Cutting Of The Corner Would Freddie Couples Do?

I've already expounded on the virtues of the excellent condition, but I haven't told you yet about the driving range and short-game facilities right in front of the clubhouse and its massive bar and seating area!!

Make sure you arrive early for your round because you'll want to have a crack at hitting a bucket of balls out towards target greens sitting in the lagoon.

It's novel, it's great fun and you'll certainly get warmed up. There's also a nice practice putting green and a chipping green with loads of room to expand. I'd love to see what they could with that area if they focussed on it.

Ancient Sands

Ancient Sands Golf Club, by contrast, offers a completely different golfing experience. We were welcomed so nicely by Yahya Shedead and his team, as they prepared for the golfing season ahead.

Built on slightly higher ground, at Ancient Sands you get views across the Red Sea, the mountains, and the town of El Gouna itself. The course is split between two very different nines: the older, more established back nine is mature and bedded in and flows along like the lagoons around it, while the newer front nine is more modern, and more exposed to the wind that always blows.

You could say it has a more sculpted look, with bold bunkering off the tees and maybe an even bolder design decision to have no bunkers around some of the greens. I'd imagine it's like any course where a new nine is added, it will feel at the start like almost like playing two courses in one but in time they'll blend seamlessly.

The condition of the course at Ancient Sands is Again Incredible

Again the course conditions at Ancient Sands are mind bogglingly five star. I had a chat with the hugely experienced Tony Jaoude, who oversees the maintenance of both courses, and he explained the challenges of maintaining exceptional standards in Egypt’s harsh climate.

Paspalum grass is used in the courses due to its ability to thrive on golf courses in areas affected by coastal conditions or using saline irrigation water.

It's an incredible feat, you'll especially notice on the greens, it depends on high or low they cut the grass on any given day to strike a balance between pace and durability to ensure year-round playability.

The Weather Is Always Perfect! Warm With A Cooling Breeze

Another factor is that wind I mentioned, especially at Ancient Sands — it's a constant (and really regulates the temperature well for the golfer, you're never too hot), and really adds a layer of strategy that makes each round more engaging.

The first couple of holes are generally into the prevailing breeze, including a mammoth par-6 but hang onto your hats and you will make par. I loved the course, club selection becomes critical hitting into the greens, and if you're playing well you will play to your handicap.

The Vast And Beautiful Practise Area at Ancient Sands

Again make sure to use the enormous driving range at Ancient Sands. Oh my goodness, I could have waited there all day hitting balls into the blue sky before me. I'm sure more chipping and putting facilities are in the plans there, but for now the range is in itself perfection.

AND though we only played two courses on our visit, there are several other top class and highly rated golf courses just a short drive from El Gouna. Make sure to check them out too!

The Big Takeaway; Pace of Play and Pace of Life

If you go to the usual big golf spots in Europe you inevitably play "conveyor belt" golf on packed courses with enormous green fees. Some look so tired and worn out yet are still rammed with golfers (and drinkers posing as golfers) teeing off every five or six minutes. Standing and waiting on every tee, tempers fraying. It's not enjoyable and it's stressful.

Mohamed In The Bar That Overlooks The El Gouna Practice Area

El Gouna is not like that. And never wants to be like that. No way. This place has pride and quality and class. We visited in September and the both El Gouna Golf Club and Ancient Sands courses were never too busy. You get to enjoy your game stress free, there's no pressure with time, you get looked after better and therein lies the difference. You want to stop for a beer after 9-holes? No problem!

Affordability

Compared to Europe and especially my country Ireland, everything in El Gouna feels like incredible value. From hotels to green fees to top quality meals, you’ll find yourself paying a fraction of the cost for a far higher standard of service. I'll give you just three examples.

Tuk Tuk Everywhere!

The local El Gouna tuk-tuks — which are fully regulated and the main way of getting around the El Gouna resort — cost just 50 Egyptian pounds, that's about €1 per ride, regardless of the distance.

Post Golf Lunch At The Steigenberger Hotel Restaurant

The Steigenberger Hotel where we stayed, had packages for 7 days half board including golf, that cost less than a hotel for a weekend, with just bed and breakfast, in Ireland!

You can walk into an pharmacy in El Gouna and get your medication without prescription for a third of the price at home. I use an asthma inhaler that costs €60 here, I got it there for €18.

Morning By The Pool at the Steigenberger Hotel

The way is to book is to not really to pay rack rates but to seek a great "package deal" within your budget. A package might include hotel half or full board including golf etc. Our Steigenberger Hotel also does combination packages which lets you eat some nights in the hotel and others you can eat in the downtown area.

Safety & Security

My Mother is a great barometer for my safety! Always has been! "Is Egypt safe?" she said when I told her I was going. "I was there 25 years ago and I'm not sure.."

Well I can safely say....I have never felt more safe or secure in my life than in El Gouna. From the airport to the resort, I counted three separate security checks along the road. And once inside the El Gouna resort complex, everyone is either staying or working there, which creates a relaxed, secure atmosphere. There’s zero crime, nobody hassling or beckoning you into shops or restaurants; it's actually one of the best things about El Gouna, it's so secure.

Staying at the 5-star Steigenberger Golf Resort El Gouna was every bit as memorable as the golf itself. You know the way when you walk into your hotel room for the first time and think "Wow, I don't deserve this!!" My room was huge, modern, and luxurious, with a balcony that looked straight out over the golf course — I did feel a little bit of guilt for a minute or two, but I got over it pretty quickly!!

Dawn Kilometre Swim At The Lagoon Beach

The Hotel is set around the lagoon and directly across from my room was the beach!! Yes a perfectly groomed sandy beach, complete with sunbeds and lifeguards and a vast cordoned off area for swimming. Every morning at 7am I swam a kilometre, my splashing and gasping the only thing disrupting the erstwhile glassy calm waters. For me this was something that added a unique rhythm and relaxation to the trip and got the day off to a great active start. There’s also a large, inviting pool right beside the main restaurant, and another again with its own swim-up bar!

One of the coolest aspects of the Steigenberger is the boat transfer across the lagoon to the golf course and gym/spa building. You click on a light, like the bat signal, and 30 seconds later you step onto a small boat and glide across the water — a simple but really memorable touch that you wont find anywhere else.

The spa at the resort deserves special mention. On my final day, after my back had tightened up and gone into a bit of a jock (maybe I was stressed at having to leave) I booked a deep sports massage. It was nothing short of remarkable. An hour later I walked out feeling like a new man. The man's hands were beyond expert, finding and working through knots of muscle with precision, he even kneading out something in my foot which eased my back, then something in my shoulder that eased my back a bit more!! Then came some sort of amazing hot oil, then a systematic trip up my vertebrae like an expert mechanic with a couple of cracks and clunks as he aligned everything back they way it should be.

I've said already but The Steigenberger Hotel is better value than anything you'll find at home, and it's a "proper" five-star standard from facilities to service.

Food & Drink

In The Steigenberger Hotel, you can fine dine in the main restaurant, or outside it which most people do because the temperature is perfect at night. Every single night. There's also a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in the hotel with a live cooking show that will blow your mind. The chef cooked up fillet steak, chicken and shrimp for us with one trick after another! Knives flying through the air flames exploding over the griddle, it was great!!

On one evening, the hotel had a barbecue evening where food stations lined the lagoon path, which was cool.

The "downtown" area of El Gouna is full of great restaurants and bars. There's a nice pizza restaurant called Zia Amelia we loved so much we went twice. There's a pub called Bojo's which has every sports channel known to man!!

Another memorable night was spent on the beach at the incredible Casa Cook Hotel by the Red Sea eating a Bedouin style meal with performers on the sand.

El Gouna is also very liberal when it comes to alcohol. Although Egypt it is a Muslim country with its own traditions, within the resort the Western culture is embraced.

One afternoon, we did a lagoon cruise on a small boat from the Hotel. Gliding through the lagoon and marinas that wind through the resort, you see El Gouna from a different perspective: classy hotels, private villas, the bars and restaurants on the water. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great way to take in just how cleverly the town is designed around its lagoons. We returned back in time to climb the steps inside the resort's viewing tower at the golf course to see the sun set on a perfect day.

What A Quad Way To See The Desert!

For something completely different, another afternoon we went quad biking out towards the desert mountains. The ride itself was exhilarating, it was tough and dusty and gritty at times but I love that, bouncing over sand and stony trails towards the shelf of mountains in the distance. We stopped at a Bedouin family home, where we were welcomed with tea and a traditional bread-making demonstration and warm hospitality. A simple euro (50 Egyptian pounds) for good luck was greatly appreciated.

The Ocean Diva Catamaran Prepares To Sail

The highlight of the activities was a trip on a huge catamaran out on the Red Sea with Ocean Diva. With around 30 people on board, we set sail with all-inclusive drinks flowing and music setting the mood.

After about an hour sailing out to sea we dropped anchor at a coral reef, where we were fitted with snorkels and flippers. I had never snorkelled before, but when shown it only took two minutes to figure out and a whole new underwater world was opened to me. We jumped in to snorkel over the coral among colourful nemo fish in crystal-clear waters.

On returning to the boat after an hour, dolphins circled us as we dried off in the sun, the crew turned up the music, the cocktails flowed, and we sailed back into the sunset singing Sweet Caroline!!

So this year all the stars point to a big week for Fitzy.

Big chance here to impress his teammates heading into the Ryder Cup. The LIV guys had their "get back up to speed" event last week in Ireland, and I think the 2020 Champion will give a good account. T2 also on his last visit to Wentworth in 2023.

Very good signs the last couple of weeks with a T13 in Atlanta and T15 at the K Club. The horse for the course at Wentworth with 8 top-25's from 11 visits. Four of those were top-10's including a win in 2022 when the event was shortened to 3 rounds. Looks each way value at 25/1. Wants to show Luke and the lads he's ready too.

Missed the cut last time out having played 4 weeks out of 5 either side of the Atlantic. Expect a rested Rai to be to the fore again this staging having been T2 in 2023 and T4 last year. Chance of a place.

Ok he hasn't a super Wentworth record but 40/1? Comes in off a 2nd at home in Denmark, then a T13 at the British Masters, then T2 last time out in Switzerland. The bookies odds are tight this week, but 40/1 for Rasmus looks like a mistake. Worth an each way look.

Defending 2019 Champion. Weather is no barrier to Shane, shot shaping in wind is in his wheelhouse. He can get up and down from anywhere. Great links warmup done around Ireland the last couple of weeks. Sixth last year in Troon and with a decent putting week has a great chance of being in the mix again here.

Sepp Straka 50/1

Winner of the AmEx and the Truist already this season. Straight off the tee and an excellent iron game. Solo seventh last week on links and showed in Liverpool two years ago that he can push on Links. Second to Brian Harman there, Sepp is poised to contend again here.

It would be a fairytale win for Tommy. Super solid all year to date, pipped at The Travelers by Bradley which had to hurt. A game fashioned in Southport and tailor made for Royal Portrush. Second in 2019 to Shane and has to be on your betslip for an each way look.

Second at the US Open and now looking like a World class operator. Will thrive in tough conditions. Yet to better his T6 from 2019 at Portrush, but is a much more rounded player now. Struggled last week and drifting in the odds but wouldn't too much store into that.

22nd Open spanning three decades and Rosey lives now for the Majors. Came early a couple of weeks back and did his recon on the course. Poor recent form put to bed with an excellent solo sixth in Scotland last week. Well able to grind in rain. Each way chances. T2 last year.

Spotted Cam down at 80/1 and had to give him a pick. Pushed his mate Cam Smith all the way at St Andrews three years ago and has an amazing five more top-10 finishes in Majors since 2022. Has the length to take advantage when presented. Good each way shot.

Produced a gritty T4 last year and performed solid again at this years US Open where he sat sixth after three rounds and finished T12. T8 at the Rocket Mortgage at the start of the month where he led the field in driving. MC in Renaissance last week but overpriced.

Aldrich Potgeiter 175/1

After close shaves in Mexico and Colonial, Potgeiter got his win in Detroit a couple of weeks ago. He also won the 2022 Amateur Championship in Royal Lytham taking down Aberg along the way there. If conditions pan out with light winds and soft fairways with rain, it will help AP.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout 200/1

T13 in Scotland last week after finding a bit of form with a T12 at the US Open. Short off the tee doesn't matter so much at Portrush and he is straight. On his day a great short game and putter.

Finally got into US Open contention last year finishing behind Bryson and Rory in T3. His relentless play was summed up at the Truist where he hit 62 of 72 greens in regulation in a T4 performance. Good last time out at Memorial too, it's much tighter and longer here, but Cantlay has a squeak.

Sepp Straka 50/1

Winner of the American Express and the Truist among 10 top-15 finishes already this season. Straight as a die off the tee, but ceding a lot of yards to the big boys here. Sepp's only missed cuts this year have been at The Masters and PGA Championship, and his US Open record is cat, but you never know!!

Tommy Fleetwood 33/1

8 top-10's and wait for it, 22 top-25 finishes in the last 12 months! Would be a super popular champion. I do feel Tommy is a potential US Open Champion, he has one of the best short games in the World. Shot 63 twice in the final round of a US Open including in 2023 to finish T5 at LA Country Club. Great chance of a place.

Closing Stats

Oakmont Country Club is hosting its 10th U.S. Open—more than any other club. Previous Opens were held in 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, 2007, and 2016. Baltusrol is second but no longer hosts U.S. Opens.

Oakmont has also hosted three PGA Championships (1922, 1951, 1978) and will hold its 18th USGA event this year—more than any other club. It’s a designated U.S. Open anchor site, with events already scheduled through 2049, including the U.S. Women’s Open (2028, 2038), the Walker Cup (2033), and the U.S. Women’s Amateur (2046).

Par 70, Oakmont will play 7,372 yards in 2025—153 yards longer than 2016. The rating is 77.5 with a slope of 147. It features bentgrass tees/fairways, rough of 4–8 inches (Kentucky Bluegrass and ryegrass), and Poa Annua greens cut to 0.09 inches—rolling at 14–15 on the Stimpmeter.

Oakmont ranks No. 5 in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” and was the first course named a National Landmark (1987). Known for its difficulty, Oakmont’s 2016 U.S. Open scoring average was 73.56. Only a few venues—like Winged Foot (74.91 in 2020) and Shinnecock Hills (74.65 in 2018)—compare. Even in soft conditions, winning scores could range from even par to 3-over.

History shows only the best win at Oakmont. Of the nine U.S. Open winners there, eight were multiple major champions. The exception is Sam Parks (1935). Winners include Dustin Johnson (2016), Angel Cabrera (2007), Ernie Els (1994), Larry Nelson (1983), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Ben Hogan (1953), and Tommy Armour (1927).

Runner-ups have also been elite: Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Shane Lowry, Colin Montgomerie, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, and Gene Sarazen. The trend is clear: only top-tier players contend at Oakmont.

Stats from 2007 and 2016 reinforce this. In 2016, Johnson averaged 317.1 yards off the tee (1st). Cabrera averaged 310.9 in 2007 (2nd), and Els 276.1 in 1994 (5th). Longer hitters tend to succeed.

Accuracy matters too. Cabrera hit 27/56 fairways (48.21%, T-48th), and Johnson hit 36/56 (64.29%, T-18th). Fairway averages were 52.09% in 2007 and 57.18% in 2016—some of the hardest on tour.

Greens in regulation is the biggest key. In 2016, Johnson hit 55/72 (76.39%, 1st). Cabrera hit 47/72 (65.38%, T-3rd), and Els 51/72 (70.83%, 1st). Field GIRs were among the lowest on Tour both years.

Oakmont is a demanding, elite-level challenge. Only the best survive.

A handshake from Jack and the bookies at 40/1 would be lovely.

Shane Lowry 40/1

Frustrated by the conditions at Quail Hollow it just didn't happen for Shane at the PGA. But what I'm seeing all year is Shane hitting 45-50 greens consistently, he found 58 at Philadelphia Cricket Club, and that sets you up for success. A good week on fast greens and he can improve on his best of T6 here in 2021.

Viktor Hovland 30/1

By his own admission there are only certain courses that he feels fit his game and he can contend on and Muirfield Village is one. Winner here in 2023, and yes Viktor has had some tough times on the course since, but showed in winning the Valspar in March that he's on the road back to his best.

Si Woo Kim 40/1

Do these Koreans ever take a damn week off??!! Well this week Si Woo definitely wont because he has top-20'd on his last five visits. His key? Consistency. He knows he'll hit around 45 fairways this week and convert that to getting on 45 greens. Then it's down to short game and putter to decide his finish. Shows flashes of brilliance like that 64 at Quail Hollow. In form and a solid each way shot.

Matt Fitzpatrick 60/1

Matt had that look in his eyes at Quail Hollow where T8 didn't do justice to his efforts. Well I saw the look anayway!! Top-10 here on his last two visits. Analytical on a course that needs 100% attention. Great each way bet at those odds.

Still out there battling in his 16th Memorial. Another tough Sunday at Colonial dropped him to T16 but I see good signs. Four career top-10's here.

Finished on even par last week with 40 fairways and 45 greens hit, kindof his modus operandi all year. Daniel finishes in the top-25 in 50% of his events over the past year, a crazy stat, and he is on a relentless run at the moment. T3 at the Heritage, T11 at the Truist, he comes back here a Champion from five years ago. Big chances.

Davis Riley 55/1

You must be kidding me!! The defending Champion. A man that was T2 at the PGA Championship last week. Is out at 55/1. The bookies must still be hung over. Great each way bet.

Keith Mitchell 55/1

Going to stick with Keith one more week. Didn't contend but shot 67, 66 on Friday and Saturday at Quail Hollow, he's on a great run and I think he's a good fit for this week. Under the radar at 55/1.

JT Poston 45/1

Brings big confidence in after a T5 last week in the PGA. Very tidy tee to green, which he has also shown he can be at Colonial on a few of his eight visits. A good week on the greens, which is his strength can yield a place here.

Mack MC'd last week after opening with a 78 but it was always going to be tough task for him off the tee. In good form with three top-10's from his last five, a decent scrambler Mack might sneak a place.

Just won on LIV in Korea, was T2 in Mexico and in super form. T5 at the Masters with his B game. Knows Quail Hollow well with top-10s in 2018 and 2021. This is a big boy course, if Bryson drives it well he can contend.

Justin Thomas 18/1

Winner the last time the event was staged at Quail Hollow in 2017 and took his second PGA title at Southern Hills in 2022. T2 last week at the Truist, he’ll be annoyed at his Sunday putting but after winning the Heritage JT is bang in form and has to be on your betslip.

Justin Rose 90/1

Withdrew from the Truist last Friday evening with an illness but hopefully he'll be well better come Thursday. Because Rosey is becoming a really consistent Major performer late in his career. Second at The Masters, T2 at the 2024 Open, T6 at last years PGA among 4 top-10's from the last five. Has podium’d at Quail Hollow on the PGA Tour and looks a great each way shot at those odds.

Pat Reed 80/1

Hate tipping this lad but if it makes us some money it’s worth it. Knows how to manage his ball around Quail Hollow from his PGA Tour days and scored a T2 in the 2017 PGA Championship here. Note that besides that the PGA Championship has not been his form Major but something tells me he’ll be up there pouting and scowling on the leaderboard.

Jason Day 90/1

Jason was bothered with a herniated disk in his neck causing him to withdraw last week. Hoping he'll be ready for this event. Showed signs of the old Day at The Masters and surely Quail Hollow owes him after his snowman on 18 in 2017. Long odds but they're that for a reason. Beware the injured golfer 10 years on from his Wannamaker moment.

T8 at The Heritage and should have been so much better but for a closing 74. Finding form again coming back to the Byron Nelson where he's finished T2 in 2023 and T13 last year. This event has been very kind to Koreans in the recent past. Kim has a great each way chance.

Jake Knapp 55/1

Cooled since good showings at The Cognizant and Players in March but came back into form to contend at the Zurich Classic alongside Frankie Capan. Solo 8th on debut here last year after opening with a pair of 64's. With confidence up he's worth a look at 55/1.

Rasmus Hojgaard 50/1

Five time winner on the European circuit and a great chance to pounce on an easy course this week. Struggled by his own high standards on the PGA Tour so far this year but has to be hugely boosted by the solo second alongside Nicolai in New Orleans.

Comes in in good form off 10th in Texas and T3 at The Heritage. Mac's last eight rounds have been in the 60's with 35 birdies, just the medicine for this week. A solid scrambler who knows the course, this could be a good week for the Canadian.

Tip 1: Collin Morikawa 16/1

T3 last year and never outside the top-20 in his last four Masters. Well rested since a T10 at Sawgrass and solo second before that at Bay Hill. Short odds but Collin is a grinder. With two Majors already in the bank.

Tip 2: Xander Schauffele 25/1

Four top-10's from seven Masters starts says one thing, Xander can "manage" the course. Injury worries are behind him, T12 last time out, nowhere near top form yet, but last years PGA and Open Champion has the mental processor to work a place.

Tip 3: Bryson DeChambeau 16/1

Never could figure Augusta out, until last year. Started like a train with 65 and managed his way along to finish T6. But what he did was arrest poor stats from his seven previous Masters and finish top -20 in Driving, Irons and Putting. Led going into final round on LIV last week and in decent form. You've got to think that now he has a formula for the course, Bryson can contend.

Tip 4: Jordan Spieth 33/1

Certainly not the Jordan Spieth of old (he's still only 31!) but this version can do well again this year. Ten years after his Masters win, he now has six top-10's racked up. Drove the ball excellently in Texas last week and putted well; I think he can place here.

Tip 5: Corey Conners 45/1

T18 last week in Texas where the test became ridiculous at times. Three top-10's before that across The Valspar, Players and Arnie and the common thread is that Corey is top 10 in greens hit every time. To place he'll need to putt well at Augusta, everything else is good. The bookies are saying he can't, but three previous top-10's says he can place for us.

US Movie Set On Irish Golf Course Sweeps Board At Cannes Film Festival

Carne Golf Links in the West Of Ireland is celebrating today after a US film, shot largely on the golf course, swept the board at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival last night.

"Finnegan's Foursome" directed by Ed Burns, took home eight awards including the Palme d'Or for Best Film.

The movie, a comedy, stars Burns, Brigid Leahy, Callum Maxwell and Naoimh Whelton and tells the story of two confused middle aged brothers as they desperately try to find their way around the Carne Links whilst on a mission to distribute the ashes of the family patriarch.

"Finnegan's Foursome" last month also scooped up three prestigious industry accolades at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival including Best Movie, Best Director and Best Actor.

"We're absolutely delighted that Carne features in 37 minutes of the 110 minute film running time," said Carne Chairman Gerry Maguire. "That's a third of the film if you work it out or nearly 34% if you go out to two or three decimal places."

"Bookings are out the door from Americans looking at coming to play, we're calling it The Carne Film Festival!!," he continued.

Playing Golf In Cyprus: Everything You NEED To Know

Recently I went to Cyprus on a golf trip with the EGTMA, or European Golf Travel Media Association. Headed up by President Jo Maes, this is a group where I've found a home, as an alternative golf media personality, blogger, influencer to the easily influenced... and budding filmmaker. What you are about to read and see wont be flowery English, but will help you if you plan on going to somewhere different to the usual places to play golf. like CYPRUS.

Getting To Cyprus

Getting to the island of Cyprus is actually very handy. We flew from Dublin to Paphos with Ryanair. And the UK travellers in the group flew direct with Easyjet It takes about four hours and you’ve usually got the wind behind you on your way out so it's basically watching a couple of episodes of "drive to survive" on my Netflix downloads and next thing we were touching down!!

We landed late at night and the airport in Paphos was relatively quick to get through, which was great on the way over. On the way back home though we arrived at the airport at the same time as other flights so be prepared for a bit of queueing and mini-chaos. Having said that, the crazy thing is that if we had arrived at airport after said groups, and much closer to our flight time, the airport was as quiet as a mouse and we would have breezed through!!

Should You Bring Your Own Clubs or Hire?

I did bring my golf bag with me, I think it’s worth it, and a lot of the courses do not have hire clubs per se. However you can hire golf clubs in Cyprus with ClubstoHire.com who have a base at Aphrodite Hills. For me, I love having my own clubs, especially when I travel to new courses. I’ve got a big long putter that a pole vaulter would be proud of, and its kindof a must have or I'm lost!!

Where To Stay

We stayed at the Constantinou Bros Athena Royal Beach Hotel on the edge of Paphos. Our hotel was an "adults only" 5 Star hotel and one of a group of Constantinou Bros hotels that cater for differing clients. If you want ultra luxury, if you want family, if you want adults only, they have an option for everyone.

I also think our quieter location on the beach, away from the crowds, but within one or two minutes across the road of a couple of lovely pubs and places to eat was perfect. Over on the beach side of the hotel, you can walk along the coast for 15 minutes to reach more bars, restaurants and things to do there also.

Our hotel was quiet, classy and friendly, with absolutely loads of things to do from pools to nighttime entertainment and for a guy like me who loves gym and trail running it was heaven. Taking a left outside the hotel one morning I ran along the beach, through stunning farm roads all the way to airport and back.

Food

Oh my God. The food in the hotel was absolutely terrific, if you love Seafood, you'll be in Heaven in Cyprus, everyone was raving over the array of fish dishes!!

I'm a good old fashioned Irish meat and two veg eater and the food throughout the trip, whether it be in the hotels, in the golf clubs or in a Paphos tavern was as good as I have ever tasted or seen!! Meal of the trip was one night we went to one of the Constantinou Bros sister hotels up the road from our own where I had a fantastic fillet steak!!

The People

The people of Cyprus are very friendly and super proud of their country and heritage. Things haven’t been easy historically which adds greatly to the sense of national pride and resilience. We spent a lovely evening enjoying traditional Cypriot food and dancing at a Tavern in old town Paphos which was excellent. As an Irishman, I could really connect an engage with our host for the evening, Nicolas Tsifoutis, Deputy Minister of Tourism with the the Cyprus tourist board. What a top guy!! Thanks also to Lucas, Nicoletta and Denise who spent time with us along the way and are great ambassadors for the island. Day One: Elea Golf Club

Our first round of golf was at the Elea Golf Club. This is a Nick Faldo design, which in itself is a stamp of excellence. Elea is a real test, with room off the tee then demanding second shots into the greens. It really uses the natural terrain of rocks and bushes to frame the holes, but don’t get me wrong, the fairways bunkers and greens are all absolutely top-notch excellent. Hit off-line and you may well end up in a bush, but a word of advice, give that bush a whack with your club first before reaching your hand in just in case there's a snake lurking!

My big takeaway from Elea Golf Club besides the excellence of the golf course was the friendliness of all the staff, genuine friendliness, and the superb facilities. Probably the best facilities and professionalism of all the clubs we visited. From the caddymaster to the bar staff, it was five star service all the way.

Day Two: Minthis Golf

On day two, we went to Minthis Resort. Now it’s hard to believe I’m writing this but the weather on the day wasn’t the usual 25 to 30 degrees and sunshine, more it was an Irish day, a little bit cool and rainy. But it only rains a handful of days in Cyprus every year so there’s happiness in the drops, every bead of water is vital in providing life for the golf courses. We did manage to play nine holes though, and I loved every second of it.

Minthis Resort is a real getaway golf destination. You could see yourself staying on-site for a week in the most amazing villas, with their spectacular views out over the hills and golf course. It’s a fully catered for all in one 5 star resort even down to the incredible Spa building, the likes of which I’ve rarely seen. The whole complex is a masterpiece of design and engineering and excellence.

The Minthis course itself is very enjoyable with two absolutely stunning standout holes. The 10th hole requires an Indiana Jones style leap of faith with your tee shot. You must stand on the tee, stop your knees knocking, trust that thing you call your golf swing and launch your ball into the abyss below. It might be one of the best tee boxes I’ve ever stood on. Here's my playing partner Ann Mooney after hitting a super tee shot down the middle!!

The other hole that had me putting away my Pro V1 one and searching for an old Pinnacle on the tee box was the par-15 hole over water. Very Sawgrass! Maybe even tougher! I lost the Pinnacle.

After a shower and change into dry clothes, we had the most wonderful lunch in the Minthis clubhouse, followed by a tour of the resort. My thanks to Margarete Dunst and Adam Davison for hosting us.

Day Three Morning: Secret Valley Golf Resort

Our day three plan was to play nine holes at two different golf courses. The first course of the day was Secret Valley Golf Resort. Now this course had more of a members club feel, we arrived a couple of minutes late due to a scheduling mixup, and kindof had to fend for ourselves to get going. But in fairness the starter did squeeze us in and we were off!!

I absolutely loved this place. Why? Because it really was a Secret Valley. Standing on every tee I loved what I saw on front of me, from straight holes where you could hit it hard to beautifully framed holes which required pinpoint accuracy every step of the way. And the greens at Secret Valley? Well I would love to know their secret, because they were far and away the best greens I’ve seen in a long time.

You know a great green when you start a 20 footer online and it just stays there, plumb-bob straight, end over end and finds the hole. If I could be a member of any club on the island, the Secret Valley would probably be it!

We were spoiled after the round with more superb food, I think a theme is emerging with great food at every course, and joined by the Director of Golf and gentleman Adam Collinson for a chat.

Day Three Afternoon: Aphrodite Hills Resort

Our final stop was an afternoon nine holes at Aphrodite Hills Resort. This is the big one, the daddy, this is THE course you have to play on the island. This is the PGA National of Cyprus and it didn’t disappoint. We played the back nine, Tony and I versus Jo and Danny; it was super fun a real proper test of GOLF. I mean a Tour level test!! Great shots rewarded, poor ones drowned.

Some of the group played the front nine and they came back with their jaws on the floor after playing the par-3 7th hole. My only regret is that we couldn’t play the full 18 holes at Aphrodite Hills. I want to come back!!! Huge thanks to Leontine Fleischer and Miguel Girbes and all the staff for making us feel so welcome as we finished our golfing trip.

Make Sure You Get Some Cyrpus Culture

When we weren't golfing, I was super busy throughout making videos of the courses which you've seen in this post. But thanks to the tourist board, we also saw plenty of Cypriot culture. We had Halloumi and bread making at Mrs Sofia`s house in Letymbou. We also called to Arsinoe`s delights (loukoumia Cyprus delights) workshop at Yeroskipou.

The mosaics were incredible and of course, we had to visit the famous Rock of Aphrodite, where the views were stunning!

One evening, we enjoyed a fantastic meal at Pagkratios “Pagratios” Local Tavern Pano old Paphos, complete with traditional music, amazing dancers balancing glasses on their heads, and pranking poor Jo into thinking he was setting a World Record for glass balancing himself!!

On a simply remarkable run. Solo fourth last week after an opening round of 75. That's three top-10's from his last 5 starts, the other two were T13's. Paid out for us at 80/1 last week, worth reinvesting some of those winnings.

Winner here in 2016, has three other top-10's and vast experience. In the mix last week at Bay Hill, maybe pushed a little too hard in the final round but a solid T8. Confidence will be high.
