Hello Abdullah,

You asked for us to share ideas for good deeds. First, I think the most important thing to teach children is that a good deed can be big, or small, seen and unseen. We do not have to show our good deeds for them to be good, and our good deeds may seem small, but in fact are very big because caring is big! Children can give so much when we give value to what they're able to give.

A GOOD DEED LIST FOR CHILDREN:

Smile at someone who needs a friend
Share part of your lunch with someone who is hungry
Help someone in your family with a task
Ask your teacher if you can help tidy the classroom
Feed the birds
Share a song with someone who is sad

Cleaning the Beach in Oman

On Tuesday 12 January the teacher collected us to tell us that we will go to a voluntary campaign tomorrow at Harmol beach a town near our school almumina. First, we hesitated but when we thought about that we are capitalized on to achieve the unannounced aims of this campaign. Therefore we decided to agree

The day after, the teacher came to our class and took us to the bus. While we were walking to the bus, she told us that we will clean Harmool beach. What a shock! Frankly our faces were full of scores and wrinkles from upset because we did not know that we are going to clean and collect rubbish, but there was not any choice.

At 8:30 we arrived at the beach with anger and despaired. later, All of us explored the beach, it was wonderful but full of rubbish and garbage. We were astonished to find other students from other schools participated in this campaign too .after that, the teacher distributed hats, shirts, gloves and cleaning tools. We started cleaning the beach and removing the rubbish such as old broken nets, tins and bottles. we also took some photos. After finishing the cleaning, we took break and we played with sand and shells. Then the organizer distributed some gifts, water and Omani halwa (sweets). It was very delicious sweet.

At 12:00 pm Sadly the teacher told us that the time was finished and we must return to the school. We implored her to stay for few more minutes. Finally we returned to the school, of course we felt tired but as we said the best you do the more you get. We thanked God that He has chosen us to participate in this great good deed.

Quran Project in Ruqayah School

Hello everyone,

On 30/1/2010 we started anew project in our school which is "Quran forum". In this course we as students , are taught by a teacher about how to read the Holy Quran properly . there were 30 girls in the project . I fell great after joining this course . the teacher said that who is going to read properly . she will graduate . And I hope to win. Wish me best luck.

It is similar to a school,but in the quran forum we don't learn all the subject but we lean one subject on. It is quran. It is a voluntary work in our school to teach students how to read Holy Quran properly. the meeting had 30 students. i wish that it will happen in all schools in Oman.

A group of students from AL-Khalili school from Oman - Nizwa visited about 60 sick children aged of new born to 8 years old. First the were welcomed by the in charge of the hospital Saad AL-Hadhrami. Then they met the children and sat with them for a short time playing with them and sharing good time with them. Next the gave each children a nice gift to enter the happiness and pleasure into their hearts. It was great moments in deed they saw the nice smiles in their faces and their moms' faces as well.After that the left the hospital with tears because the saw very scary sights in all hospital's wards especially children wards.

Before the leave the in charge of the hospital gave the students some information about the hospital such as, when it was built, the number of staff in the hospital, the number of beds and so on. Finally students left the hospital and returned it their school.

Helping the Poor Cleaners - Oman

It is winter now and the weather is cold, therefore, we decided to help the poor workers and cleaners in the school who always come from the early morning to work and clean the school. The students asked to buy gloves for them or make them a cup of tea to keep warm. So, next day the students served them some tea in the morning and they were very glad.

We shared the social worker in our school in the donation box to help poor and orphan people. We told our students about the box and to whom we will give the money that we all will collect. They accepted the idea and they asked us to give some of the money for Palestinians too.

Next day a boy of iEARN immediately came to us and said that he is ready to donate today. I took him to the donation box which has the symbol of iEARN (Good Deeds) project and I asked him to put his money in. I took a photo and I thanked him a lot.

Dear all,

In this topic, Teacher Faiza and me Teacher Marwah will post all our students' work here.

We started the second meeting for our students in which we distributed some work to each student to do but they can all do it together too. We asked about their ideas and they came with wonderful and great ideas of good deeds. They seem that they understood the project well.

As we are going to do some work inside and outside the school, other teachers and families should know who we are (students + teachers), therefore, we designed cards for our students to wear whenever they do good deeds and whenever we go to do good deeds.

Helping Earthquake victims in Sumatra

Speaking about Good Deeds in a real life situation, one week ago. The students' organization in my school donated a number of money to the victims of earthquake disaster in Sumatra Island, Indonesia. They have collected every cent of money from the students and other school staffs, and sent it through a certain institution to be delivered to the victims.

We, who live in Java Island didn't get much effect from the earthquake when it happened (we just felt a little trembling, but still it was shocking us). The point is that from joining Good Deeds Projects my students' awareness to help and share with others has been increasing. Thank you once again for inviting us to participate in this project.

Honesty Counts

My name Siti Haifa. I’m from Senior High School 1 Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. I want to tell you about my experience.

Someday I went to go to Gramedia Book Store for buying some books. But, the books which I searched for couldn’t be found. So, I just read some books there and went back home using public bus. Along the way, a little street singer entered the bus. He sang with heart. After singing, he asked for some money to all passengers. I felt so pity on him; I wanted to give more money to him, but small money I had only five hundred rupiahs. Although I only gave him Rp500.00, I hoped it could be useful for him. Then, he got out of the bus, and the bus moved again. After that, I got off at Departement Store, because I wanted to buy a present for my friend. I bought some books and letter. Then, I went home.

At home, I checked the bill. Actually, the book with the price Rp 5000,00,- has not paid yet by me because it was not counted by the cashier. My god ! I felt that book was not legal for me, I couldn’t use that book, but I thought maybe it was a response from Allah because I gave money to a little street singer in the bus. If that was true, the response was ten doubled. Subhanallah, but I still feel worried, although it wasn’t caused by me, but I should have paid that book. Cause I wouldn’t use illegal goods.

Lastly, someday I returned back to the book store and paid that book. Ffuhh,, I felt relieved because that book was legal for me then, and I could use it.

The message I could get from my experience was that we could spend our money (even in a bit number) for goodness; God surely would give us double in return. If not, it would be paid in the after life later. I hope all people in the world would share their money with poor people, because the money we got was not completely ours, some of them belonged to the poor.

My Friend Fahmi

Hi, Guys! I’m Galuh Nisa. I’m student from Senior High School 1, Bogor, Indonesia. Let me tell you about one true story that happened in my life. And this story really changed my mind, which before was too underestimate the power of support and spirit. Now, check this out!

When I was in Junior High School, at the last year, one of my schoolmates got a very seriously sick. His name is Fahmi. Based on the doctor’s diagnose, Fahmi got lupus. He was infected by this disease when he was in the second year. Slowly but sure, Lupus made his body weak. When we would face UAN (Ujian Akhir Nasional) – national examination to decide the students in Junior High School graduated or not, Fahmi collapsed. He had to take several treatments in hospital. Everyday, Fahmi’s condition got worse. He started to face kidney failure. He should have blood cleaning once a day. His foot got swell because the water in his body couldn’t get out. He seemed very pale and became very thin.

All of us thought that Fahmi wouldn’t survive. Although he could go through his sickness, he wouldn’t pass Junior High School exam because he couldn’t go to school and studied. But, Fahmi kept holding on. He did the homework and tasks, copied the n ote, and tried to keep up the lesson. Because of his amazing enthusiasm to struggle and followed UAN, all of his friends supported him. They told about funnies event in the school, cheered him up, taught him the lesson, etc. They always visited Fahmi after the school. All of that made Fahmi felt happy and strong. He ignored his sickness and just thought about UAN. In his mind, he just wanted to graduate from Junior High School. For six months, Fahmi had been hospitallized. And, surprisingly, Fahmi passed the UAN, and could enter the Senior High School, with good result.

That was my story, and as I said before, Fahmi’s life story could change my point of view and opened my mind. He and his friends showed me that although we had a very hard problem in our life, we must struggle and face it. We can’t run away. Because if we run away, the problem will follow us until we die. And, another lesson that I get is never underestimate the power of support. Support not only can make us happy and feel strong to survive, but also show us that we’re not alone. And finally support can open our mind, that many people in this world faced the same problem, even their problem sometimes worse than us.

Last but not least, I know Lupus will always be in Fahmi’s body, and he can’t have a normal life for a long time. But, I’m sure with the development of medical science, sooner or later it can be invented the medicine of Lupus and cured Fahmi.

The Crowded Bus

Assalamualaikum,wr.wb . . Hi. . . My name is Astri Wiraswany. I am Indonesian. I study at senior high of one Bogor (SMAN 1 Bogor). Let me tell you my good deeds.

Once upon a time, I went to school later than before. At that time, I went to school at 06.00. That’s later fifteen minutes than before. I usually went to school at 05.45. I usually took a small public car to school but my mother asked me to take a bus. She said that it was faster than a public car. Then I obeyed her.

The bus was very crowded,that I didn’t get a chair to sit. Standing in a bus made my foot painful. Then, passengers got off one by one. Finally, I got a chair for sitting. I sat while reading the lesson book, because there was an exam. Then, I was wondering if I came late or not to school.

After ten minutes, there was a woman with her baby took the same bus with me. There was no empty chair, meanwhile her baby didn’t stop his crying. And I saw them mercily. Then I got up from my chair and asked the woman to sit on the chair. She thanked and gave a smile to me. Then I smiled at her too.

Although my foot felt painful but I felt happy to help them. I remembered my mother. My painful foot was nothing than the struggle of that woman and my mother for giving their child a birth and brought them up patiently.

My Two Little Swans

One day, my swan had seven eggs. I was really surprised for it. It was the first time my swan laid eggs since they arrived here. I waited and waited. After two months, two of seven eggs became a swan. I was so glad to see them. So I gave those two little swans names, Phill and Paul. As you could think, I hardly remembered which one was Phill or Paul. But it didn’t matter. I always gave them a half plate of rice and a pail of fresh water all day. They were my pity.

Several days after that, when I got home from the school, I could not find either Phill or Paul. I thought they hided in shrubs, but they weren’t there. So I gave up, but I really wanted to know where they were at that time. When I checked one more time, I was really surprised. I found Paul in the pond. He drowned until his neck. I took him to the ground. He looked weak and brittle. When I looked at pond again, I was surprised again. Phill was drowning all of his body. I knew he would not be able to be sa ved. His body was freezinge like an ice. I was so sad. So my brother buried Phill near a jackfruit tree. I could not stand to see it. It was so sadden.

Firstly, Paul was really weak. After several months, Paul could live with another swan. When I checked him with his mother, I made a mistake. She was a female! So I changed her name became Pauline. She was a beautiful swan, like her mother, Will, brightly white swan. Although I just had one a new swan, but I really thanked to God. I hoped Phill’s soul could be accepted in-His side. Amen.

My Angry Teacher

My name is Stefanus Jagad, and I study at Senior High School 1 Bogor, Indonesia. I had an experience which I want to share. I had a very mean teacher in my junior high school.A lot of students regarded her as a “killer” teacher and they were afraid of her. She taught me in the 9th grade. Actually, I hoped I could get another teacher when I realized she would teach me for a year. But there was no other choice instead of facing it. She was about 60 years old.

She was very mean and she was always angry when she came to my class. She didn’t care we did the right or wrong things. No matter what, everything was false in her eyes. Some students didn’t like her, neither did I. But it changed one day.

It was Valentine’s Day and my school celebrated the lovely day. I got a lot of chocolates from my friends. After the school ended, I was planning to go to the canteen to meet my friends. On my way there, I saw my “mean” teacher walked alone. I didn’t remember wh at I was thinking that time, but I called and greeted her spontaneously. After a short conversation I gave her one of my chocolate. I said “Happy Valentine Ma’am,” and what a surprise! She gave me the most beautiful smile that I’d never seen from her before. Her face changed and she looked younger a lot of years. I was so happy to see her. And after that day, she became better and better. She often smiled and she was seldom angry at us. I thanked God because of a chocolate, I could change a person.

As a student who worked in “Good deeds” I will take this opportunity to briefly outline my experience during my two year tenure at “Good deeds, as I think that this project helps to spread the spirit of giving and sharing between all kinds of people.

Our main goal was helping sick and disabled children by providing them with our continuous support to free them from their sufferings. Firstly, we went to “Salmaniya medical complex“ and specifically to Pediatrics department, were we provided the children with many gifts planting joy in their small hearts and making us even happier in return.

Our second step was the charity day at school , we were divided into two groups , the first group was selling toys which were donated by our school students and the second group was to draw on students t-shirt , and the profit was given to those inflicted with down syndrome. However, we did many good deeds in our school including planting our school garden and other community services that we achieved in different departments at school.

I believe that working in “good deeds “project was an eye opening experience and an amazing opportunity which made me realize how little deeds we do ..

I would like first to thank you for your great project and the tremendously achieved deeds and the philanthropy that you and your students chose to foster. It is a great pride to iEARN community to have you among us and pace these gigantic steps towards perfection. It is my pleasure to thank you again and hope you more success.

To my great appreciation I found many positive aspects in this project. To start with I shall mention the altruist target and the obvious goal of keeping students conscience alive. Added to the courageously implemented vision and the philanthropic effort.

Indeed I think we share some of the same perspectives about good deeds and the altruist projects in general. Thus we may meet in so many points and have identical views. I know that the world could be changed by slightly paced steps. I believe also that your efforts to open the frontiers of learning in class to a wider day to day life class room where studen ts could learn from their interactivity and positive thought and additive tangible deeds

All those field visits and the campaigns are a great success with everlasting influence they are not only your students new gains the success I am glad to say is ours it is thanks to sharing them via iEARN forums and software announcement that all I earners will have an idea about how a world can be changed how a small plant can thrive bloom and spread the branches and gives shade over wider spaces and teaches new generations such good habits and faith that there is a brighter angles to the world.

I allow my self the chance to ask you about the secret of this success and how had it come to your mind the idea of launching such an enormous project with great motivation? And were there real obstacles and challenges? And how come that you overcame them? About your future prospect do you think that good deeds will be sooner the mainstream and notorious deeds only the exc eption ?

Teachers as Role Models

I hope you are doing well with your project.
I like so much your ‘Good Deeds’ project. Certainly, it’s a splendid and noble dedication to carry out this wonderful project. In fact, I believe this is a significant "good deeds" initiative for the benefit of all the humanity. As you mentioned before, living in this egocentric and materialistic world, any good deed, be it small or big, is of an intrinsic value, there is so much to do to make our world a place for better living. Children should learn how to behave in ways that show care, brotherhood, mercy and sacrifice towards the other. They, also, should be involved in various activities to reflect upon their deeds.

I think that we, as teachers, have so many things to do to instill in our students good behaviors. Most of the students take us as their models. Thus, it is compulsory for us to be responsible, show respect, help incessantly, treat equally, advise nicely, show compassion, and say nice words… to induce students to do likewise.

I try together with o ther teachers in our high school to make students aware of the importance of all ‘Good Deeds’. We work in the school club on themes like civic conduct inside and outside the school, classmates’ relationships, poverty, voluntary work, and so on, in order to sensitize students to the fact that every good deed they do counts and can bring positive changes around.

Still, I always raise questions about what’s going on locally and globally in the world. How come that we haven’t yet been able to do good things to the people who suffer everywhere? Why do people still do not care when it comes to environmental issues?

For sure, if we help student to understand that every good deed is valuable, we can bring fabulous changes to our world. Isn’t it?

It really showed how a simple deed would change society to the better. By involving students in that project, they are made to live the reality of villages. They also learn about their conditions by contact. They is no mediator between them. By combining inside and outside the classroom, you have succeeded in encouraging your students to take part in porgrammes that will improve their community.

I am doing the same with my class these days. We are having a two-week fund raising to help abandoned women in nursery homes. My students paid them a visit and inquired about their needs. Thus we tried to convince students, teachers and administrative staff to take part , too. My students and I are collecting anything that can help relieve the pain of those women.

I do believe that by exchanging and sharing such experiences, other people would take part, too. It is just a simple thing. Be ready to sacrifice one’s time for the benefit of others. Moreover, when iearners read your participation, they would certainly look around them for needy people or dirty streets or just visit hospitals. They would support the sick whose families are away by visiting them from time to time and start chatting with them to boost their morale.

Yet, a lot of questions rose up : How can we convince people to take part in such projects ? Why do people fight only for their rights and they are not ready to fulfill their obligations ? When will people understand that good deeds can save them, their families and society as a whole ? When will people be convinced that a small drop and a small drop can run a river? Why can not educated people give good examples to start doing good deeds ?
