It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:
he is in his own half of the field of play

he is level with the second last opponent

he is level with the last two opponents

Commiting an Offside Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
interfering with play

interfering with an opponent

gaining an advantage by being in that position

No Offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
a goal kick

a throw-in

a corner kick

Infringements/ Sanctions
For any offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred.

This is offside because the red number 10 is in front of all of the defenders, leaving only the goalkeeper back which isn't enough players to play him onside. This position may have been forced by the defenders moving forward in what is called the offside trap.

Here we can see that the blue number 3 defender has fail to move up the field with rest of his defence and played the red number 9 onside. This is a classic example of where the offside trap fails

The offside rule exists to stop goal hanging, where a player stands next to the opposing teams goal keeper in the hope that someone can get the ball to him (probably using a long ball), so he can get it past the goal keeper. Which would make for a very boring game.

The red number 9 isn't beyond the blue 4 defender but is offside because the goal keeper isn't back. This is one of those rare occasions where goal keeper is out of the goal (e.g. last minute of F.A. Cup final on a corner kick) and can't get back in time but if the attacking team play the ball as they normally would, then it would be offside because the offside rule requires two defenders to be in front the attacker and the goal keeper usually counts as a defender.

Why are linesmen (assistant referees) always calling offside when it isn't? Well believe it or not its not really their fault (unless the decision goes against you or your team), it's all to do with angles and line of sight. In the picture the purple line represents the linesman's line of sight which as you can see is at a slight angle, this line should be parallel with the goal line. So even though the red number 10 is being played onside by the blue defender it will be called offside. This is unfortunate but does happen from time to time.

These stunningly detailed sculptures may only be made from paper - but they are being snapped up by art fans for tens of thousands of pounds. The intricate creations depict Native American scenes and took up to 11 months to make using a specially formulated paper

Husband and wife team Allen and Patty Eckman put paper pulp into clay moulds and pressurise it to remove the water

The hard, lightweight pieces are then removed and the couple painstakingly add detailed finishings with a wide range of tools

They have been making the creations since 1987 at their home studio, in South Dakota, America, and have racked up a whopping £3 million selling the works of art

The pieces depict traditional scenes from Native American history of Cherokees hunting and dancing

The most expensive piece is called Prairie Edge Powwow which sold for £47,000

Allen said: "We create Indians partly because my great, great grandmother was a Cherokee and my family on both sides admire the native Americans...

...I work on the men and animals and Patty does the women and children" explains Allen

"I enjoy most doing the detail. The paper really lends itself to unlimited detail. I'm really interested in the Indians' material, physical and spiritual culture and that whole period of our nation's history I find fascinating. From the western expansion, through the Civil War and beyond is of great interest to me."

Allen explained their technique: "It should not be confused with papier mache. The two mediums are completely different. I call what we do 'cast paper sculpture'"

"These sculptures are posed as standing nude figures and limited detailed animals with no ears, tails or hair"

"We transform them by sculpting on top of them - creating detail with soft and hard paper we make in various thicknesses and textures.

"We have really enjoyed the development of our fine art techniques over the years and have created a process that is worth sharing. There are many artists and sculptors who we believe will enjoy this medium as much as we have."

Surf's up! Stunning underwater photos of surfers as they crash beneath the waves

Battered by waves as they are flung beneath the surface, these are the action-packed photos of surfers when it all goes wrong.

A photographer spent months being battered by the sea as he captured the moments waves broke underwater.

Mark Tipple took the shots of swimmers and surfers emerging underwater engulfed in clouds of whitewater while being frequently rocked by the waves himself.

The 29 year old captures the split second moments off the Australian coast and regularly gets beaten in the head by his 5kg, specially adapted camera for his troubles.

Mr Tipple, from Sydney, Australia, came up with the idea of photographing waves underwater after becoming frustrated with 'normal' surf photography, and wanted to capture the moments from a different perspective.

He said: 'During a flat spell in Sydney I shot a few small waves with people swimming off to the side.

'The results were pretty graphic and led to people swimming becoming the focus of the series, which was against my initial intention but looked great.

'Most of the people I photograph are just enjoying themselves at the beach and I ask them if they'd mind being in a picture.

'I tell them what I'm doing and show them a few photos and mostly they're amazed.   Most of the time I come off worse than the people I'm shooting, generally I'm looking sidewards to track where they are in relation to where the wave is, and tend to pay more attention to them than the wave; which can rock me pretty hard.

'I'm pretty comfortable underwater from years of surfing, and can ride out the waves breaking overhead.

'Most of the credit has to be paid to the camera though, I'd be lying if I didn't say that most of the time I hold the shutter down and point in the general direction of the people.

'The housing is about the size of a shoebox, and weighs about 5 kilograms, heavy enough to hurt when it hits me in the head. I guess it's transformed from a simple idea of seeing how the waves look underwater to how people adapt and what they go through when diving under waves.'

Mr Tipple has been surfing since he was a child and begun filming underwater in 2000.

He said: 'I used to surf with a video camera strapped to my helmet that would record underwater when I was being thrashed by a wave and when I duck dove; it produced a few cool images but not to the extent that I was looking for.

'After a few years of playing around with different cameras and camera positions I gave up surfing and turned to shooting full time.

'By not being restricted by the physical object of a surfboard I could follow surfers underwater, and be free to roam around below and shoot what I wanted to shoot.'

If you think this picture is astonishing, imagine the view the zookeeper had.
Staring straight into the bone-crunching jaws of a massive crocodile, he must have been able to see all the way down the creature's throat.
Fortunately he timed the dropping of a chunk of meat in between those fearsome teeth without losing any limbs.

The picture was taken as gawping tourists looked on for World Environment Day at Malabon Zoo in Manila, Philippines yesterday.
The zoo is a private collection, owned by Manny Tangco - who started it out of his house in the 1960s.
From there, it grew into a tourist destination.
However it has been slammed in the past for not operating as a breeding centre for animals. Others have criticised the zoo for being relatively small and cramped.
Nevertheless the zoo remains popular with schoolchildren - located as it is just behind the public schoolhouse.
Fingers crossed none of the animals ever escape then.
