Thus it is always prudent to have some kind of health insurance. This is the negative of our current time, the cost of medical care.

However, the big positive of our current time is the Internet and the inventor of the Internet Tim Berners-Lee should really be awarded the Nobel Price for inventing something that has made our life so much more interesting and convenient. The Internet had made getting an online insurance quote so very easy, right in the comfort of your home or anywhere in the world.

Plus placed information on our fingertips. A few taps of the finger can get you information on How to Save on Health Insurance so you don't break your bank in having to pay for very expensive health insurance.

Health insurance deals with your physical health. It is great to be healthy but life is uncertain. One never knows when calamity may struck. If something happened to you and you are taken away from your family, your family may be deprived of a breadwinner. If you are not convinced that you need life insurance, go read about why you need Life Insurance online.
Natural Remedies

Erectile dysfunction - Viagra cream safer alternative
Viagra pill have proved to be effective to treat erectile dysfunction or ED, but it has side effects which include headaches, blurred vision and upset stomachs. The use of the Viagra cream confined the active ingredients of the drug to a small area of the body rather than circulating systematically through the body plus reaching the target area much faster.

The tests were done on rats bred to suffer erectile dysfunction and tests found the cream containing Cialis, sialorphin and nitric oxid to be effective and showed no side of side effects.

Before the Viagra cream can be prescribed for human however, further tests need to be done to ensure the treatment is safe before clinical trials with human can be carried and getting approval for general use may take 10 years or more.

Erectile dysfunction at Amazon

Men's Health at Amazon

Reproduction at Amazon

END OF POST. The key lies in a protein called Neuregulin 1 or NRG1.

A team of Boston researchers tested the abilities of various molecules to spur cell divisions in cultured cardiomyocytes (cardiac muscle cells) and found that NRG1 produced the most significant effect. NRG1 was administered to animals which had suffered heart attacks and it was found to promote regeneration of the heart muscles, proving that adult heart cells of mice can be stimulated to reproduce itself. The researchers thus conclude that they have identified a new approach to promote myocardial regeneration.

The researchers now plan to test this new therapy in pigs which have more in common with humans than mice and rats.

While this finding point towards a possible new therapy (patients getting daily NRG1 infusions over period of weeks) for damaged hearts, researcher Dr. Bernhard Kühn cautioned that the safety of the therapy need to be tested before the study can proceed to testing in humans.

END OF POST. Now according to a report in the Journal of Clinical Investigations by researchers of the University of Nottingham and the University of Manchester, the antibodies it selves can attack and destroy directly cancer cells.

The antibody works as follows. It attaches to a cancer cell and trigger lysosomes (small acid-containing sacs) within the cell to bloat up and burst in the process releasing their deadly content leading to the death of the cell. According to researcher Dr. Mark Cragg, the findings throws up the tantalizing possibility of applying this knowledge of how antibodies trigger cell death to come up with new effective treatments for cancer.

END OF POST. It is an immunosuppressant drug often used to prevent autoimmune organ rejection in organ transplant.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 253px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sEyw6txVACs/SlXI-TulqPI/AAAAAAAACg0/hGbcLrX0jUo/s400/rapamycin.png" border="0" alt="molecular structure of Rapamycin (Sirolimus)"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356408304600197362" title="molecular structure of Rapamycin (Sirolimus)" />
Rapamycin molecular structure courtesy of Wikipedia - Sirolimus

Rapamycin - elixir of life?
Research done at three centres in Texas, Michigan and Maine and published in Nature journal gives hope that we may be nearer at finding an elixir of life or at least an anti-ageing drug that can prolong life. The researchers fed rapamycin to mice which were bred to mimic the genetic diversity and susceptibility to disease of humans as closely as possible and at an age equivalent to 60 years in humans and found that the drug prolong life by 28 to 38%

However, we should not yet jump up with joy because Rapamycin in an immunity suppressant and will suppress the body immune system leading to infection. The mice in the research which were fed Rapamycin were protected from infection. This would be almost impossible for human in real life situation. Dr Lynne Cox, an expert in ageing at the University of Oxford, the findings are interesting because they highlighted an important molecular pathway that new, more specific drugs might be designed to work on.

END OF POST. It is estimated that 1 in 500 UK residents suffers from FH and will have dangerously high levels of bad cholesterol from an early age.

Most FH patients have a mutated LDLR gene. Victims with only one abnormal gene will likely suffers premature cardiovascular disease at the young age of 30 to 40. Those with 2 abnormal gene will likely suffer severe cardiovascular disease while at tender childhood.

It is estimated that 50% of men and 33% of women with familial hypercholesterolaemia will suffers a heart attack before reaching 60 years of age.

Treatment of familial hypercholesterolaemia
Patients with familial hypercholesterolemia can be treated with statin drug which can prolong the lifespan to almost normal. It is thus important to screen families if any member of the familial is tested positive for familial hypercholesterolaemia and anyone testing positive for FH should be put on statin drug.

Cascade testing (CT)
Lab medicine The sequencing of tests to diagnose a disease or process–eg, familial hypercholesterolaemia; Cascade Testing is appropriate when a 'gold standard' method is technically demanding and/or costly and the diagnosis can usually be established by simpler or more cost-effective strategies.

Dr Dermot Neely, consultant in clinical biochemistry and metabolic medicine at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, said cascade testing with DNA diagnosis was very effective in practice.

END OF POST. Olaparib belongs to a new class of drug called PARP (Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase family, a human gene) inhibitors.

In a study led by the Institute of Cancer Research and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, 19 patients with inherited forms of advanced breast, ovarian and prostate cancer caused by BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, were given Olaparib. Out of these 19, 12 (63%) had their cancer tumors shrunk or stabilized. They also experienced very few side-effects from the treatment.

One of the 12, Julian Lewis who had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer had levels key chemical marker reduced to a low level within a month after been treated with Olaparib and had stayed low for more than 2 years. Further, secondary tumors in the bones have also almost disappeared. As for side effects from Olaparib, Julian only reported experiencing stomach discomfort and mild nausea which is a big improvement over those drastic side effects from chemotherapy.

Professor Stan Kaye, one of the researchers, said that they plan to further study whether Olaparib can be used for other more common forms of breast and ovarian cancers.

In another study at the Royal Marsden National Health Service Foundation Trust in Sutton, UK, 60 patients out of which 22 are carriers of BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, were treated with Olaparib. Dosage used was 10mg daily for 2 to 3 weeks increasing to 600mg twice daily. Patients similarly experienced few mild side effects.

Both studies were early-stage trials but were published early because the studies are pointing to a new direction in the development of anti-cancer drugs which targets specific molecular defects rather then the types of cancer.

Sources:
BBC News: New cancer drug 'shows promise'
Olaparib May Benefit BRCA Mutation Carriers

END OF POST. The surgery involved making a 10mm incision in the belly button and using laparoscopic "key-hole" surgery technique to remove the organs. By making that 10mm incision, Paraskevas could insert a "single access port" through which instruments and a small camera are fed to enable the almost scarless surgery.

Such surgery normally involved making 3 incisions which leaves scars and requires hospitalization. However, the technique perfected by Paraskevas not only left practically no scar, the patient could be discharged on the same day as the surgery.

END OF POST. Professor Harris said Ritalin's benefits included enhanced study skills and concentration and claims it is unethical to prevent healthy adults and students to take it (currently Ritalin is a prescription drug classified in UK as a Class B drug and unauthorized possession can lead to a five-year prison sentence.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 175px; height: 153px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sEyw6txVACs/Sjy3bE2WfsI/AAAAAAAACgU/hoG93dopxSU/s400/ritalin.png" border="0" alt="molecular structure of methylphenidate (Ritalin)"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349352133195366082" title="molecular structure of methylphenidate (Ritalin)" />
Molecular structure of methylphenidate courtesy of Wikipedia

END OF POST. For patients with advanced prostate cancer which has spread outside the prostate, surgery is no longer an option. Standard treatment for advanced prostate cancer is to use hormone therapy to try to shrink the cancer tumour.

In the Mayo Clinic study, the researchers tested MDX-010 (Ipilimumab), a type of monoclonal antibody, to see if it will stimulate a strong immune response to attack the prostate cancer cells. The results, according to Dr. Eugene Kwon, were beyond expectations. It was found that in 3 cases, the tumours had shrank so much that it was possible to surgically remove the tumour. 20 other test subjects had also shown improvements. The researchers so so encouraged that they have planned to expand the trial to test higher dosage of MDX-010 on a further 30 prostate cancer patients, and beyond that, to expand to larger trials in many hospitals.

Here are more details about the "startling results": Rodger Nelson was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. The tumor has spread beyond the prostate while the cancer is encroaching upon the abdomen. The prognosis for such condition is usually death within a few months and only palliative care would be given. However, after only one dose of Ipilimumab (MDX-010), Nelson's tumor has shrunk so much that it could be surgically removed. The surgeons described the tumors as "very hard to find". Another patient in the study, Fructuoso Solano-Revuelta, had a tumor as large as a golf ball with similar prognosis. His tumor too have shrunk after application of Ipilimumab to the extend it became operable. Both men have returned to work.

END OF POST. The report is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They claimed that as asthma progress, the asthma patient's airways get changed or remodeled (become more muscular, particularly the smooth muscles) and it is this remodeling of the airways that is responsible for asthma becoming chronic. Because of the remodeling, the airways muscles also more reactive to allergens. The key to this process is a cellular pump in the muscles called SERCA2 (Sarco/Endoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+-ATPase). The job of SERCA2 is to pump calcium out of the muscles so that the muscles can relax.

The researchers found that if they removed SERCA2 from the cells of non-asthmatic healthy people, these cells begin to behave like asthma cells.

The researchers thus believe that if they can replace the SERCA2 in the airway muscles of asthmatic patients, they may be able to reduce the symptoms and put a brake on the long term changes in the lungs which caused chronic asthma. This is thus a possible route to finding new treatments for asthma patients.

END OF POST. Their software named "How was school today" uses sensors, swipe cards, and a recording device to gather information on what the child using the system has experienced at school that day and turned them into a story by the computer using what is called natural language generation which the pupils can then share when they get home.

Children with cerebral palsy have great communication problems and experience problems interacting verbally with people. The software enables them to tell a "story" and support a more interactive narration and quickly answer questions.

The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Natural Remedies

Cardiac arrest: Music can be you best medicine

If you suffered a heart attack, perhaps music can be your best medicine. A study conducted at the University of Illinois College of Medicine on doctors and medical students practiceing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on mannequins while listening to Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees and timing their chest compressions with the beat can achieve very close to the rate recommended by the American Heart Association is 100 chest compressions per minute

If you are curious about the song, here is a video of Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees:

Apparently, even if not listening to the song but guided by mental recall of the song, the doctors and medical students can still achieved very close to the recommended rate by the American Heart Association

Natural Remedies

Control hypertension without medicine - real life story

Here is my real life story about how I licked hypertension (high blood pressure). I belong to the high risk group because I am 60 years old and I have close relatives who have died from burst blood vessel in the brain plus a cousin who had been on hypertension medication for 20 years.

About 2 over months ago the doctor measured my blood pressure to be 150 over 90. A week later, it was 150 over 100. This would place me in the stage one hypertension. The doctor wanted to put me on medication, but I pleaded to try to control the blood pressure via diet plus exercise as once I go on hypertension medication, I would have to take it for the rest of my life. I was told to see him again in 2 months time.

I bought a digital blood pressure monitor and started avoiding fried food, oily stuff and reduced my intake of meat and took more toufu. I started exercising using my zero cost exercise machine. However, I am a widower and have to eat out, and thus cannot control my salt intake. The blood pressure was erratic - ranging from 140 over 90 to as low as 90 over 60. On the whole, however, it was better than the initial readings by the doctor.

When I saw the doctor again, he said the he will have to take the higher reading and wanted to put me on low dose medication. I pleaded to try dieting and exercising again and was told to see him again in 3 months time.

Now I started to cook my own food so that I can control my diet. I can say that my blood pressure is under control now.

More later.

Natural Remedies

Exercise, Sleep, Food are best medicine

Nearly everyone knows the well-known saying, laughter is the best medicine. However, health and freedom from illnesses is not dependent on any single factor as there are many aspects of health. One should also consider physical activities, sufficient rest and sleep and nutrition.

Thus, it can just be as well said:

Exercise is the best medicine.

Sleep is the best medicine.

Food (proper nutrition) is the best medicine

END OF POST. If you have purchased such medical (or health) insurance, then you can have peace of mind that if you ever get seriously ill, and need expensive medical treatments from medical service providers, you have your insurance company behind you covering your medical bills. If you are fortunate to live in a country like the United States of America, you probably is covered by Medicare. Medicare is funded partially by payroll taxes contributed both by the company and their salaried employees.

To you, doing that is a simple matter. You visit a doctor, the doctor makes a diagnosis, prescribe treatments, you or the medical service provider submit a claim to the insurance company, and you rest in peace at home. However, a lot of things goes on in the background of which you probably are not aware of. You can find out more about what goes on in the background at Wikipedia: Medical billing in the United States.

The role of medical billing companies as an intermediary between the medical service providers and the insurance companies lubricate the whole process from claims to payment, and because of the complexities, having a medical billing software is important and perhaps is one of the reason why Prefered Health Resources, a medical billing company is able to claim that they can achieve a claim adjustment rate of 12% with Medicare, way below the average 20% to 35% reported in a recent article in Dermatology Times.

END OF POST. I think this is particularly important for businesses and manufacturers because some businesses and manufactures (not all) often place more importance on the bottom lines (in plain English - profits) then the welfare of current and future inhabitants of Mother Earth (which sometimes they forget includes themselves and their family members) plus I think they are the major source of pollution and environmental problem (sorry, no statistic to back it up. If you have, will highly appreciate you leaving a comment with the info or a link, preferably active or clickable. Some of their irresponsible actions have long term effects which can stay with us for a very long time.

These problems must be tackled to the best of our abilities, and it is fortunate we have companies like EHS Compliance Software providing businesses and manufacturers come up with information technology (IT) innovations to help business comply with government regulations with respect to EHS (EHS is acronym for Environmental, Health and Safety) requirements, IT certifications and site remediation.

It is highly welcomed that we have companies like Environmental Data Solution Group providing benchmarking services to help companies adopt the best practices among peer companies and strategic planning services to help identify and allocate priorities with respect to EHS (Environmental, Health and safety) and MIS (Management Information System) projects.

Environmental Data Solution Group also have EHS Metrics Software to help track data to maintain compliance with various federal, state, and local laws and provide the performance criteria to support continual improvement beyond compliance. ISO 14000, the International Standard Organization for Environmental Management Systems, as well as IS09000 (Quality Control) stress on continual improvements.

Environmental Data Solution Group's EHS Software implementation also helps companies and manufacturers implement services for Environmental Health and Safety Management Information Systems and help them increase effectiveness and efficiency in controlling the environmental impact of their operations, comply with regulatory requirements, and very important, for staff welfare, increase worker safety plus reduces risks from environmental and health consequences as well a financial aspects of their operations.

END OF POST. I hope you are convinced of the great health benefits you get by getting rid of your smoking habit. Note that I have made the word habit bold. Why? Habits are nasty stuff. Once you acquire a habit, it is pretty hard to stop. And smoking is addictive. But if you have the will power to stop, you can. Even if your will power is weak, but you wish to stop, help is available. There are medications like NICORETTE which is a nicotine gum. Other brand names include Commit, Habitrol, Nicotrol, Nicoderm, and Prostep.

Nicotine gum helps you stop smoking in various ways. One is of course it keep your mouth busy so your mouth have no opportunity to hold a cigarette. And the nicotine that gets absorbed helps to stop your craving to smoke. There are pros and cons of using nicotine gum and also a proper way to use it. You can get more information from Proper ways to use nicotine gum plus information of its pros and cons.

You can purchase Nicorette as well as other alternatives from Online Canadian Pharmacy Escrow Service. It says Canadian, but they deliver world wide. I believe if you are a US resident, you can order your Nicorette from Canada at half the price you can get in the US.

You should not use Nicorette beyond 12 weeks as it can be addictive if abused. I am not a medical doctor or pharmacist, so this post is for your information only. You should consult your doctor and you are also encouraged to do your own research. A good place to do that will be the website for "Physician Desk Reference". You can type or copy-paste "Physician Desk Reference" into the search box above, make sure the radio button (.) WEB is ticked, and click "Search". Their site should be the first on the SERP (Search Engine Result Page).

It is meant for medical professionals and students, but I see this on their website: "Access to PDR.net and Thomson Clinical Xpert is free to U.S.-based MDs, DOs, Dentists, Optometrists, NPs and PAs in full-time patient practice, and to U.S. medical students, residents and other select prescribing allied health professionals". Note that I have made the word residents to draw your attention to it, as to me, it means if you reside in the US, you get free access. However, I am not a US resident, so I cannot verify that for you. If you happen to be a US resident, I hope you will try to get access and leave your feedback by leaving a comment in this post.

END OF POST. There are lots of things we can do to try to maintain good health such as getting the right nutrition, getting enough exercise, avoiding substances that can harm our health, etc. However, whatever we do is no guarantee that we will not get medical problems. I have come across 2 (actually 3) cases where the people I am in contact with who aren't in the best of health. One is a paraplegic who became one because of a serious accident and now suffers from chronic pain. He asked me to help him with his blog to earn income from affiliate marketing but said he have only $100 left over from Medicare and Medicaid after paying for nursing care. The other one I almost forgot is a blogger from Australia who also suffers from chronic pain. The third one is a fellow fellow blogger. She admitted to suffering from depression. Now for depression, some says herbal stuff like St. John Wort is effective, but for serious cases which require hospitalization, I have my doubts whether such mild stuff is sufficient.

When we are unfortunate to fall into ill health, we can either turn to Natural Remedies or Conventional Medicine because natural remedies cannot help in some cases, and similarly conventional medicine cannot help in others.

The fellow Blog*Star whom I said admitted to suffering from depression happened to be a Canadian. I am highly tempted to let her know about Online Canadian Pharmacy which is actually an escrow service that helps connect surfers with a pharmacy in a safe and trustworthy environment. As far as I know, Prozac or Fluoxetine is the most popular and most widely prescribed drug for depression and it is known that St. John wort, the herbal alternative, does not work in every cases. While this escrow service do provide delivery to all over the world, the reason why I thought of this website is because shipping to Canada I suppose is easier to a Canadian address as I expect most of the pharmacies would be Canadian based. However, I have not checked with them. Perhaps I will.

Maybe I should do that soon because I see on that website that not only do they claim to be able to help their customers save an average of 40% to 90% off their medications, they are offering also offering for a limited time only, Free Shipping For Life when buying drugs from any of their licensed pharmacies for Premium Members.

However, I would advice those who use conventional medicine to do their own research because they can have undesirable side effects which a busy medical doctor may not always have the time to inform you about them. For example, I have read that Prozac can increase the possibility of suicide. But there are always alternatives and you should consult your doctor regarding them. In any case, one has to weight the pros and cons of using a medication versus the benefits they can bring. Herbs, which many believe do not have side effect, if used wrongly, can also bring problems.

END OF POST. In most cases, use of human waste and sewage sludge is also not allowed. They are not allowed to include food additives or subject to ionizing radiation.

For meat, it means the animals from which they are derived are reared without antibiotic or growth hormones.

Many countries also exclude genetically modified food as organic food. Organic food are of course grown by organic farming which, among others, also uses natural ways of pests control.

Harmful pesticides and herbicides can directly affect the health of human who uses the pesticides and indirectly via the food chain. Some harmful pesticides can end up in the fish that we eat for example.

Although we are talking about organic food from the health point of view, it also has great relevance to the well being of our environment, which can indirectly affect our health. Organic farming is more environmentally friendly because they do not release artificial and harmful pesticides into the environment, more conducive to sustaining diverse ecosystems, uses less energy and produce less waste such as packaging materials for artificial fertilizers and pesticides. Organic farming also cause less or no damage to the soil in which they are grown in, in contrast to conventional farming. In fact, some says it helps build up good soil. Nitrates and phosphates in artificial fertilizers also percolates into the rivers, lakes and sea and can cause algae blooms and eutrophication (aging) of lakes.

END OF POST.
