The Orange Blossom Special [redux]
Delina says: I wasn't really a cat person; my father would never let us have one we I was growing up. But when I wanted to get a pet, my landlady would allow cats but not dogs. So I picked out a cat that was "on sale" for half price at Heartland Humane Society in Oregon. It seems that they had a glut of all-black or black-and-white cats. I grew to like my cat, Montana, very much. So I started going back to photograph other cats. I used to just do it entirely on my own, but the employees saw me there so often that they thought I worked there. Ha ha! I don't work there, but after years of taking pictures there, I volunteered that they could use them on their Web site, for free. I am poor, as far as money, but that was a way I could donate to them without a lot of money. I enjoy making people mindful of all the beautiful animals out there in the world available for adoption.

This particular litter I called the Orange Blossom Special Kitten Litter. The shelter workers called them Gamboge, Umber, Coral, and Tangelo. There were actually five in the litter, but Russet, a little girl, got adopted while I was getting ready to take the photos. Gamboge, Umber, Coral, and Tangelo all got adopted too.

So she stayed with me, along with her brother Grover and her mother. She answers to Girl Kitty, so I guess she's okay with it. She has a really fluffy undercarriage and loves trying to head butt the dog, but the dog knows cats are sharp and tries to avoid that. She took well to indoor cat life and gets along with my dog so she's now a permanent member of my family. I came home from work one day to find her with four newborns. Sadly, one didn't make it. I used to work at a cat hospital and then the SPCA many years ago and also raised up a couple of abandoned litters before these guys. At least these guys had their mom! Jack is a grey tabby who ended up going to live with a friend of mine.

When my sister brought them both home from the SPCA, Blackie hid from everyone for the whole day, whereas Smudge was happy playing with (and attacking) everyone in his new surroundings. But Blackie got used to his new home soon enough. He's much calmer than Smudge -- although he loves playing and hunting, he doesn't see us as being his playthings to attack! He loves to follow people around when they are outside and then run away when they try to pat him. And of course he loves hunting insects with his brother Smudge.
Courtesy of: Chris Gin

Alda is the one that we kept. She's a lively and deep-voice, rather chatty cat that manages to charm everyone she meets.
Courtesy of: gudmundurh

We fostered him and his siblings, Miss Audrey Fuzzburn, Miss Maddie Messybutt, Pudgie Pyewacket, and Lady Guinevere. Lancelot was the protector of his siblings -- he'd hiss and spit at us to warn us to stay away or else! His name really suited him. :-) He was adopted as an only cat by a gentleman looking for feline companionship. By the way, for those of you who remember that Miss Audrey was returned to us by her first adopter, she did find finally find a forever home a few weeks ago at our local Petco.
Courtesy of: Betsy Foster

Oliver
hollyfsu says: Oliver and I live with a roommate in Orlando, Florida. She has three cats and Oliver loves to play all day with them and lovingly lick them clean afterwards. He also loves people and will continuously meow and roll over when you come anywhere near him. He constantly wants attention and is spoiled because I give it to him all the time! He always wants to be touching me and often lays his head or paw on my arm, leg, or face. He is a Tonkinese which is half Siamese and half Burmese. His Siamese side makes his meow very loud, and his Burmese side makes him very athletic. He can jump about four feet in the air and doesn't care at all where he might land. He runs into objects quite often but that doesn't stop him! He loves to play fetch with his feathery toys. He's curious, loving, and adventurous! He loves car rides, is not afraid of water, and loves to eat people food! Oliver is the absolute light of my life, and I love him very much. My sister is a photographer and she took these beautiful photos.
