Arabic names were historically based on a long naming system; most Arabs did not simply have given/middle/family names, but a full chain of names. This system was mainly in use throughout Arabia and part of the Levant.

Structure of the Arabic name[edit]

Ism[edit]

The ism (اسم) is the personal name (e.g. "Jafar" or "Ali"). Most names are Arabic words with a meaning, usually signaling the hoped-for character of the person. Such words are employed as adjectives and nouns in regular language.

Jafar means "Rivulet"

Ali means "Exalted, High"

Generally, the context and grammar differentiate between names and adjectives, but Arab newspapers sometimes try to avoid confusion by placing names in brackets or quotation marks.

A very common name is Muhammad, used throughout the Muslim world, including parts of Africa, Arabia, the Middle East,South and Southeast Asia. The name may be abbreviated to Md., Mohd., Muhd., or simply M. in many cases, in which case the second given name is the one most commonly used. This can be seen in many names in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Muslim practices[edit]

A common form of Muslim Arab names is the combination of ʿAbd ("servant", fem. ʿAmah) followed by a description of God. A particularly common masculine example is Abdullah (عبد الله "servant of God").

In deference to God, ʿAbd is usually not used in conjunction with prophets' names.^[1] Nonetheless such names are accepted in some areas.

This practice is not exclusive to Muslims in the Arab world. For example, in Lebanon and Egypt, Abdel-Massih ("servant of Christ") is commonly used as a Christian last name.

Arab Christian practices[edit]

To an extent, most Christian Arabs have names indistinguishable from Muslims, except that they almost never use explicitly Islamic names, e.g. Muhammad. Some common Christian names are:

Arabic versions of Christian names (e.g. saints' names: Botros for Peter, although not a translation).
Names of Greek, Armenian, and Assyrian / Aramaic origin.
Use of European names, especially French, Greek and, to a lesser extent, Spanish ones (in Morocco). This has been a centuries-long convention for Christian Arabs, especially in the Levant. For example: George Habash, Charles Helou,Camille Chamoun.
Names in honor of Jesus Christ:

Abd al-Yasuʿ (masc. ) / Amat al-Yasuʿ (fem.) ("slave of Jesus")

Abd al-Maseeḥ (masc.) / Amat al-Maseeḥ (fem.) ("slave of the Messiah")

Derivations of Maseeḥ ("Christ"): Masūḥun ("most anointed"), Amsāḥ ("more anointed"), Mamsūḥ ("anointed") and Musayḥ("infant Christ"). The root, M-S-Ḥ, literally means "to anoint" (as in Masah) and is cognate to the Hebrew Mashiah.

Abd al-Ilaah ("worshiper of God") is a Christian equivalent to the common Muslim name Abdullah.

Laqab[edit]

The laqab (لقب "cognomen" / "surname") is intended as a description of the person.

For example, the Abbasid Caliph Haroun al-Rasheed (of One Thousand and One Nights fame). Haroun is the Arabic form for Aaron and al-Rasheed means "the rightly-guided".

The laqab was very popular in ancient Arab societies. Today, the laqab is only used if it is actually a person's birth surname/family name.

Nasab[edit]

The nisbah (نسبة) surname could be an everyday name, but is mostly the name of the ancestral tribe, city, country, or any other term used to show relevance. It follows a family through several generations.

The laqab and nisbah are similar in use, thus, a name rarely contains both.

Dynastic or family "Al"[edit]

Some people, especially in Arabia region, when descendant of a famous ancestor, start their last name with آل, an arabic nounwhich means "family" or "clan", like the dynasty Al Saud (family of Saud) or Al ash-Sheikh (family of the Sheikh). آل is distinct from the definite article ال. If a reliably-sourced version of the Arabic spelling includes آل (as a separate graphic word), then this is not a case of the definite article, so "Al " (capitalised and followed by a space, not a hyphen) should be used. "Ahl " (similar, more global meaning) is sometimes used and should be used if the Arabic spelling is أهل. Dynasty membership alone does notnecessarily imply that the dynastic آل is used - e.g. Bashar al-Assad.

This person would simply be referred to as "Muhammad" or by relating him to his first-born son, e.g. Abu Kareem ("father of Kareem"). To signify respect or to specify which Muhammad one is speaking about, the name could be lengthened to the extent necessary or desired.

Almost all Arabic-speaking countries (excluding for example Saudi Arabia or Bahrain) have now adopted a Westernized way of naming. This is the case for example in the Levant and Maghreb, as well as some North African countries, where French or English conventions are followed (an effect of European colonization), and it is rapidly gaining ground elsewhere.

Also, many Arabs adapt to Western conventions for practical purposes when travelling or when residing in Western countries, constructing a given name/family name model out of their full Arab name, to fit Western expectations and/or visa applications or other official forms and documents. The reverse side to this is the when Westerners are asked to supply their first name, father's name, and family name in some Arab visa applications.

The Westernization of an Arab name may require transliteration. Often, one name may be transliterated in several ways (Abdul Rahman, Abdoul Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Abdurahman, Abd al-Rahman, or Abd ar-Rahman), as there is no single acceptedArabic transliteration system. A single individual may try several ways of transliterating his or her name, producing even greater inconsistency. This has resulted in confusion on the part of governments, security agencies, airlines and others: for example, especially since 9/11, persons with names written similarly to those of suspected terrorists have been detained.

Common mistakes[edit]

Non-Arabic speakers often make these mistakes:

Separating "the X of Y" word combinations (see idafa):
- With "Abdul": Arabic names may be written "Abdul (something)", but "Abdul" means "servant of the" and is not, by itself, a name. Thus for example, to address Abdul Rahman bin Omar al-Ahmad by his given name, one says "Abdul Rahman", not merely "Abdul". If he introduces himself as "Abdul Rahman" (which means "the servant of the Merciful"), one does not say "Mr. Rahman" (as "Rahman" is not a family name but part of his (theophoric) personal name); instead it would be Mr. al-Ahmad, the latter being the family name.
- People not familiar with Arabic sandhi in genitive constructions: Habību-llāh = "beloved (Habīb) of (ul) God (Allāh)"; here a person may in error report the man's name as "forename Habib, surname Ullah". Likewise, people may confuse a name such as Jalālu-d-dīn ("The majesty of the religion") as being "Jalal Uddin", or "Mr. Uddin", when "Uddin" is not a surname, but the second half of a two-word name (the desinence -u of the construct state nominative, plus the article, appearing as -d-, plus the genitive dīn[i]). To add to the confusion, some immigrants to Western countries have adopted Uddin as a surname, although it is grammatically incorrect in Arabic outside the context of the associated "first name". Even Indian Muslims commit the same error. If a person's name is Abd-ul-Rahim ("servant of the Merciful"), others may call him Mr. Abdul ("servant of the") which would sound quite odd to a native speaker of Arabic.
Not distinguishing `alā' from Allah: Some Muslim names include the Arabic word `alā' (علاء "nobility"). Here, ` represents theayin sound, the voiced pharyngeal fricative, and the apostrophe (') represents the hamza (glottal stop), and L is spelled and pronounced once. In Allāh, L is spelled twice and pronounced separately (geminate). In Arabic pronunciation, `alā andAllāh are clearly different. But Europeans, Iranians, and Indians may not pronounce some Arabic sounds as a native Arabic speaker would, and thus tend to pronounce them identically. For example, the name `Alā'-ad-dīn ("the nobility of the religion", also known as Aladdin) is sometimes misspelled as Allah-ad-din. There is a separate name `Ala'-Allah (Aliullah, "the nobility of God").
Taking bin or ibn for a middle name: As stated above, these words indicate the family chain. Westerns often confuse them with middle names, especially when they're written as "Ben", as it is the case in some countries. For example, Sami Ben Ahmed would be mistakenly addressed as Mr. Ahmed. To correctly address the person, one should use Mr. Ben Ahmed.
Grammar: As between all languages, there are differences between Arabic grammar and the grammar of other languages. Arabic forms noun compounds in the opposite order from Indo-Iranian languages, for example. During the war inAfghanistan in 2002, a BBC team found in Kabul an internal refugee whose name they stated as "Allah Muhammad". This may be a misspelling, for if not, by the rules of Arabic grammar, this name means "the Allah who belongs to Muhammad", which would be unacceptable religiously. However, by the rules of Iranian and most Indian languages, this name does mean "Muhammad who belongs to Allah", being the equivalent of the Arabic "Muhammad Ullah". Most Afghans speak Iranian languages. Such Arabo-Iranian or Arabo-Indian mixed-language compound names are not uncommon in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Tajikistan. There is, for example, the Pakistani/Indian name Allah-Ditta which joins the Arabic Allah with the Persian/Urdu Ditta ("given").

Arab family naming convention[edit]

In Arabic culture, as in many parts of the world, a person's ancestry and family name are very important. An example is explained below.

Assume a man is called Saleh ibn Tariq ibn Khalid al-Fulan.

Saleh is his personal name, and the one that his family and friends would call him by.
ibn translates as "son of", so Tariq is Saleh's father's name.
ibn Khalid means that Tariq is the son of Khalid, making Khalid the grandfather of Saleh.
al-Fulan would be Saleh's family name.

Hence, Saleh ibn Tariq ibn Khalid al-Fulan translates as "Saleh, son of Tariq, son of Khaled; of the family al-Fulan."

The Arabic for "daughter of" is bint. A woman with the name Fatimah bint Tariq bin Khalid al-Fulan translates as "Fatimah, daughter of Tariq, son of Khaled; of the family al-Fulan."

In this case, ibn and bint are included in the official naming. Most Arab countries today, however, do not use 'ibn' and 'bint' in their naming system. If Saleh were an Egyptian, he would be called Saleh Tariq Khalid al-Fulan and Fatimah would be Fatimah Tariq Khalid al-Fulan.

If Saleh marries a wife (who would keep her own maiden, family, and surnames), their children will take Saleh's family name. Therefore, their son Mohammed would be called Mohammed ibn Saleh ibn Tariq al-Fulan.

However, not all Arab countries use the name in its full length, but conventionally use two- and three-word names, and sometimes four-word names in official or legal matters. Thus the first name is the personal name, the middle name is the father's name and the last name is the family name.

The Arabic names listed below are used in the Arab world, as well as some other Muslim regions, with correspondent Hebrew, English, Syriac and Greek equivalents in many cases. They are not necessarily of Arabic origin, although some are. Most are derived from Syriac transliterations of the Hebrew Bible. The popular romanization of the Arabized and Hebrew names are written first, then the standardized romanization are written in oblique. Notice that Arabized names may have variants.
If a literal Arabic translation of a name exists, it will be placed after the final standardized romanization.
If an Arabic correlation is ambiguous, (?) will be placed following the name in question.
* Yassou' is the Arab Christian name, while `Īsā is the Muslim version of the name, as used in the Qur'an. There is debate as to which is the better rendition of the Aramaic Yeshua, because both names are of late origin.
** Youhanna is the Arab Christian name of John, while Yahya is the Muslim version of the name, as used in the Qur'an. They have completely different triconsonantal roots: H-N-N ("grace") vs H-Y-Y ("Life"). Specifically, Youhanna may be the Biblical John the Baptist or the apostle. Yahya refers specifically to John the Baptist.
El, the Hebrew word for strength/might or deity, is usually represented as īl in Arabic, although it carries no meaning in classical and modern Arabic. The only exception is its usage in the archaic Iraqi dialect.

Indexing[edit]

According to the Chicago Manual of Style, Arabic names are indexed by their surnames. Names may be alphabetized underAbu Abd and ibn, while names are not alphabetized under al- and el- and are instead alphabetized under the following element.^[2]

১. হাবীব: অর্থ প্রেমিক- প্রিয়তম-ডার্লিং। এটা ডাক নাম হিসেবে রাখা বড় এক ধরণের অসতর্কতামূলক কাজ। ব্যাপারটা বিভিন্ন সময় নোংরামী ইঙ্গিত করে। সেই সঙ্গে মাহবুব, আশিক, মাশুক ও বাদ।
২. রমীম: অর্থ গলিত পচা হাড়।
৩. অদিতি: অদ্বিতীয়। পৌরাণিক নাম যার অর্থ ইশ্বর মাতা।
৪. গোলাম/দাস/আবদ: এই জাতীয় নামও বাদ
৫. নবী/রসুল: প্রধান নামের সাথে রাখা যায়। তবে এমন ভাবে যেন কখনই তা ডাক নাম হিসেবে ব্যবহার না হতে পারে।

এই পোস্ট টা তাদের জন্যই যারা সিদ্ধান্ত হীনতায় ভোগেন এবং কিছুতেই নিজের সন্তানের নামটি ঠিক করে উঠতে পারছেননা।
ক) নাম নির্বাচনের সময় করনীয়:
১.দেখুন আপনার পছন্দের কোন ইসলামের বুজুর্গ আছে নাকী। আশরাফ আলী (রহ:) এবং সাহাবাদের ভিতর উমর (রা:) ও আলী (রা:) আমার বিশাল লাগে।
২. বন্ধু বান্ধব বা বাবা-মা, চাচা-ফুপু, মামা-খালা বা এই পর্যায়ের অন্য আত্মীয়দের মধ্যে কারও নাম পছন্দ হলে আর অর্থ ভালো হলে তাই রেখে দিন সন্তানের জন্য। দেখবেন প্রতিবার ডাকার সময় প্রিয়জনের কথা মনে পড়ে ভালো লাগছে।
৩. সন্তানের নামের সাথে বাবার প্রথমনামটা ভালো হলে অবশ্যই জুড়ে দিন।
৪. কমপক্ষে দুই শব্দের নাম এবং বেশী হলে তিন শব্দের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ থাকুন।
৫. প্রথম নামটা এক শব্দের কোন সুন্দর নাম দিতে পারেন। নবী মুহাম্মাদ (সা:) এর কোন নাম বা উপাধী নিতে পারেন। আমার নিজের ডাক নাম মুহাম্মাদ। আপনি মুহাম্মাদ বা আহমাদ রাখতে পারেন।
৬. মাঝের নামটা দিন প্রথম নামের সাথে সামঞ্জস্য পূর্ণ কিছু।
৭. শেষের নামটা বাবার হলে ভালো হয়। না পারত পক্ষে বংশ যুক্ত করার হাস্যকর প্রচেষ্টা থেকে দূরে থাকুন। কিন্তু খুব ইচ্ছা হলে রাখতে পারেন।
৮. আব্দুল্লাহ এক শব্দ মনে হলেও আসলে কিন্তু এটা দুটো শব্দ। এমন যুক্তশব্দ একটা মনে করে বিশাল নাম তৈরী করবেননা।
খ) নাম নির্বাচনের সময় বর্জনীয়:
১. কখনই বেশী বড় নাম ব্যবহার করবেন না। মাথায় রাখবেন যে এটা আপনার সন্তানকে বহুবার লিখতে হবে। তিন শব্দের নামই সর্বোচ্চ। উপাধী বা বংশ রাখার দরকার নাই। উপাধি সে বড় হয়ে যোগাড় করে নেবে।
২.মুহাম্মাদ কে লেজুড় হিসেবে মো:/মো: এমন লিখবেননা। ইমান ভালবাসা বাড়তি থাকলে পারলে পুরোটাই রেখে দিন। এবং এর সাথে জুড়ে দিন অন্য কোন নাম। তবে মুহাম্মাদ হাফীজুর রাহমান কিন্তু যথেষ্ঠ খাটনির জিনিস। মুহাম্মাদ খুব সুন্দর একটা ডাক নাম এবং হাদীসে এই নাম ব্যবহারের উপর এতো উৎসাহ দেয়া আছে যে এমনও সাহাবী ছিলেন যার চার ছেলের ডাক নামই মুহাম্মাদ। এবং অনেকে এমনও ছিলেন যে নিজের, ছেলের এমনকী নাতীর ডাক নামও রেখেছেন মুহাম্মাদ।
৩. অজানা কোন শব্দ ব্যবহার করুন। কুরআন শরীফে এমন অনেক শব্দ আছে যা নাম হিসেবে রাখলে ইমান থাকেনা। অমুসলিম হয়ে থাকতে হয়। তাই কুরআন শরীফ নিয়ে জুয়া খেলবেন না। কুরআন বন্ধ করে আন্দাজে একটা পৃষ্ঠা খুলে যেটা প্রথম চোখে পড়বে সেটাই নাম এই খেলার জন্য কুরআনের জন্ম দেয়া হয়নি।

গ) সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে বিয়োগ পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করুন:
১. ঠিক করে নিন কোন কোন জাতীয় নাম আপনি দেবেননা।
২. এবার ঠিক করুন কোন কোন নাম হলে ভালো হয়।
৩. আরেকজনের সাথে পরামর্শ করুন।
৪. একটা ভালো নাম তা যতই কমন হোক না কেন তা ভাল। সুতরাং নামের অর্থ ভালো হলেই হলো। আর কোন ফাজলামীর দরকার নেই। নাম খুজে না পাওয়া পর্যন্ত ছেলে সন্তান মুহাম্মাদ/ আহমাদ/আব্দুল্লাহ/আব্দুর রহমান নামে ডাকতে থাকুন।

ভাল একটি নাম অনেক গুরুত্ববহন করে। এটা একটা মানুষের আজীবন বহন করতে হয়। শুরুর নামটা ভাল হলে পরবর্তীতে পরিবর্তন নিয়ে আর কোন ঝামেলায় পড়তে হয়না। যদিও খারাপ নামের থেকে পরিবর্তনের ঝামেলা ভাল কিন্তু তারপরও কেন এই অনাকাঙ্খিত যন্ত্রনায় ভুগতে যাবেন। ভাল একটা নাম পরিবর্তনে বেশী সময়ও লাগেনা। দশ মাস না পেলেও কমপক্ষে পাঁচমাস তো পেতেই পারেন নামের জন্য। অনেকে একটা আনকমন নামের জন্য আকাশ পাতাল তালাশ করে বেড়ায়। কিন্তু আনকমন নাম বড় কথা নয় বড় কথা হলো ভালো নাম। যার অর্থ ভাল এবং শুনতে ভালো।

It is not allowed for Muslims to use the 99 names of Allah without the use of Abdul (Slave of) , Golam or this kind of word in front of it. This is because that these names are the attributes of Allah and we mustn’t assume that we have the similar attribute of the almighty. We humans are imperfect and are only His slave and we should not compare ourselves to His capabilities and power.
We also mustn’t use other names with the present of Abdul in front of it. Such example is using a name like Abdul Muhammad. This name would mean that the person is a slave of Muhammad which is not an attribute of Allah thus as if assuming that Muhammad is similar or at the same level of Allah. Why Muslim names with Meaning ?

Muslims must choose a name that has a righteous meaning, that will befit and bring blessings to the child throughout his or her life. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names." (Hadith Abu Dawud).

Name Indicating Servitude to Allah Subahanallah Woa Ta'ala (Holy Great)

The child is given a name indicating servitude to Allah (Subahanallah Woa Ta'ala) by calling him 'Abd (slave of...) followed by one of Allah’s (SWT) names, those which are confirmed for Him and the most beloved of such names to Allah (SWT) - the One free of all imperfections - are 'Abdullah (the slave of Allah) and 'Abdur-Rahman (the slave of the Most Merciful) as shown by the Hadith:
"The most beloved of your names to Allah - the Mighty and Magnificent - are 'Abdullah and 'Abdur-Rahman" (Reported by Muslim & Abu Dawud)
Then these are followed in excellence by similar usage of the rest of Allah’s (SWT) names to indicate the person’s servitude to Him, such as ‘Abdur-Raheem (the slave of the Bestower of Mercy) and ‘Abdul-Lateef (slave of the One knowing the Most Hidden Matters and the One Most Gracious and Kind to His slaves), and so on.
The Messenger (SAW) established the example for us in this by putting into practice, so he called on of his sons ‘Abdullah and he called the son of Abu Talhah: ‘Abdullah. He furthermore called the son of another ‘Abdur-Rahman and there are many more examples. Therefore, we find that a large number of the Companions gave these two names to themselves and their children so that the number of them carrying this name was near to three hundred and Ibnus-Salah mentions that they numbered about two hundred and twenty.

Name After One of the Prophets of Messengers of Allah

Messengers of Allah (SAW) said:

"Call yourselves by the names of the Prophets." (A Hadith reported by Ahmed & Abu Dawud)
And he (SAW) said:

And we find that following this principle, he called his own son Ibrahim - after the name of his forefather Ibrahim (AS), he (SAW) said:
"A son was born to me this night and I called him after my forefather Ibrahim." (Reported by Muslim & Abu Dawud)
He likewise called the son of Abu Musa ‘Ibrahim’ and he called a son of ‘Abdullah ibn Sallaam ‘Yusuf’ after the Prophet (AS). (Reported by Ahmad)
This also used to be practiced by the Bani Israel as the Prophet (SAW) informed us and approved of with his saying:
"They used to name their children after the Prophets and the pious people who came before them." (Reported by Muslim)

The Companions of Messengers of Allah (SAW), The Martyrs and the Scholars - both the Men and Women of Them.
Hoping that the child will grow up to love and respect them and follow their way and adopt their manners in righteousness, knowledge and seeking martyrdom. For this reason the noble companion az-Zubayr ibn al-Awam (RA) chose the names of some of the martyrs from the Companions for his ten sons, hoping that they would become like them. So he named one 'Abdullah after 'Abdullah ibn Jahsh the martyr of Uhud, and 'Urwah after 'Urwah ibn Mas'ood, and Hamzah after Hamzah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib - the noblest of the martyrs, and Ja'far after Ja'far ibn Abee Talib - the martyr of Mutah, and Mus'ab after Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr - the martyr of Uhud (RU) and what we have just mentioned is not specific to the males - rather it is for both the males and the females. So it is indeed praiseworthy and beneficial for the correct upbringing of daughters that they be called after the names of the pious women and those who participated in Jihad from the female companions and those after them, hoping that they will follow them in piety, chastity and manners, and from these names are: Fatimah, Maryam, Asma, Sumayyah, Nusaybah, Khawlah and others from the pious and believing women.

Names that are good in their meanings carrying meanings of bravery, chastity or piety and easily pronounced, harmonious, and suitable and befitting the person who carries the name. Names are historical heritage of people. The names reflect their past and present, historical and economic ties with other nations, culture, faith, their hopes and aspirations, living conditions.

The original Nakh names reflect their attitude to the environment. The Chechen language contains a number of personal names, which emerged on the basis of the original lexical fund. These names are quite specific and linked with the flora and fauna and also attributive appellations. The original names represent the most ancient stratum in the Chechen anthroponimics, and heritage of the Chechen language and seldom penetrate other languages.

Personal Chechen names are largely reflected in the animal world: Bozh (buozh – goat- Ali; Bula (bul) - bison; Borz (buorz) – wolf; Ovlur – lamb of winter cattle; Lom (luom) – lion and declination form – Loyoma.

Other designations of predatory animals are used as nicknames reflecting a person’s features: Cha – bear, Piil – elephant; Nal -- wild boar, denoting power. Zhyogal – fox, denoting slyness, courtliness and servility. Dakka – a mouse, underlines the ability to sneak anywhere and avoid trouble. Zizig is a cat; Kyeza – a puppy, a diminutive namesake for children. Lu – a roe; Sai is a deer, which stresses, elegance, beauty, gracefulness.

Polla denotes a butter-fly, chyrk – a knat, moza—a fly, zingat – an ant, sesa – a tadpole, zayapzalg – a grasshopper.

The formation of personal names from designations of the flora is quite common in any language: Nazha – an oak-tree, Baza—yew-tree, Jola—shrubbery , Dushta (duushto) – ash-tree. Zezag means flowers, Zaza – florescence, Datta – rowan-tree, Kemsa – grapes, Petyamat – poppies.

The Chechen language also has names derived from the designations of precious metals and gems: Dasha – both male and female – means lead; Deshi – gold, Deti – silver. Birlant – diamond; Djovkhar – pearl; Mokhaz – flint.

The Chechen language also contains names reflecting natural phenomena, special bodies: Markha – a cloud; Seda (Sieda) – star; Batta – lunar; Mayalkh-ayazni meaning solar beauty; kameta – comet; Kyilba – south.

The Chechen anthroponimics has names which denote conjuration and incantation, derived from verbs. Male names: Vakha – to live; Dukhavakha – to live long; Vakhiyta – let live; Visa – to stay; Visiyta – let him stay.

Female names: Yakha – live; Yakhiyta – let her live; Yisa – stay.

Such names were given in families whose children did not survive. The harsh economic conditions, need and poverty resulted in high infantile mortality. And in such cases, a despondent mountainous family resorted to names-incantations: Satziyta, Toita – enough, let it stop.

The Chechens attributed a great importance to names. Their names were treated gently. Chechens would say that “a name is the glory of the mighty, but it can also be a disgrace and infamy of the weak”.

There are names in the Chechen language, derived from adjectives: Dika – good, Masa – quick, agile, Maira, Mayrbek, Mairsolt – courageous (bek), Sutarbi – greedy. Khaza is beautiful, (Khazabika), Kurbika – proud (bika).

The semantics of many names based on Hakh languages is not quite clear today. Unfortunately, many originally and traditionally Nakh names are undeservedly forgotten and recede in the past. Life is changing and names are changing in reflection of those changes. The words denoting the names acquire new meanings. The Chechen language contains names adopted from other languages. It is assumed that for those people who embraced Islam, Arabic names are quite common. This is not quite true. In reality, these people have a few scores of names, which Arabs bore in the first century after embracing Islam. Purely Arabic names were retained only among those who were linked with the name of prophet Mohamed, and let the Allah bless and greet them, and with the names of his associates and disciples. Many names bestowed on Chechens are oriental names, but there are also names adopted from the Russian language and other languages by way of Russian.

Let us consider the etymology of some of those names:

1. Abbas (abbas) – is a name which was bestowed on the Prophet’s uncle, let the Allah bless and greet him. The meaning of this name is austere, sullen.
2. Abdullah (Yabdullah) – is a name of the father of Prophet Mohamed, let the Allah bless and greet him. The meaning of the name is a slave of the Allah.
3. Abdulrakhman (Yabdulrakhman) -- is a name which first appeared with the onset of the Prophet’s prophetic mission. The Prophet often mentions in his scriptures that Abdulrakhman is a noble name. The meaning of the name is a slave of the All-mighty.

One of the chief names of the Allah that begins the Koran is Bismallah-yir-rakhmanir-rakhim – meaning – in the name of the Allah – the All-mighty and merciful.

4. Abu – a name’s core, meaning Father and it begins names such as Abuali, Abumuslim, Abubakar, Abusaid.
5. Aisha is the name of one of Prophet Mohamed’s wives and let the Allah bless and greet him. The meaning of the name is living.
6. Ali (yelah) is a common name in Muslim countries and it was bestowed on the legendary son-in-law of Prophet Mohamed, and let the Allah bless and greet him. The name of Ali is linked with the powerful movement in Islam – the Shia. The name denotes supreme, elevated.
7. Akhmad (Akhymad) – glorified.
8. Ayub is a name of one of the Prophets and denotes repentant, according to one version, and persecuted according to another.
9.Bulat is derived from Arabic and means steel.
10.Vadud is one of the 19 epithets of the Allah – and al Vadud denoting affectionate.
11. Daud means a loving friend.
12.Jamal – denotes beauty, attractiveness. Jamaldin – is the beauty of faith, and Jamaldi is a derivative of this name.
13. Zainab (Zainap, Zainapi) means buxom, and it was the name of one of the daughters of Prophet Mohamed , let the Allah bless and greet him.
14.Zaman (Zama, Zamani) means time and epoch.
15.Ibrakhim (Ibraykhim) is the name of one of the Prophets; in Hebrew it is a form of Abraham denoting the father of all nations.
16.Laila (Laylya) – means a lily.
17.Malik – meaning possessor, ruler.
18.Malika – denotes Czarina.
19. Mansur – means victorious.
20.Mukhammad (Mokhyamad, Makhymud, Mukhyammad) meaning glorified, glorious.

Names forbidden in Islam

There are some names which we are forbidden to use for a Muslim.
Those :
Any name which belongs only to Allaah, such as al-Khaaliq (the Creator) and al-Quddoos (the Most Holy), or names which do not befit any except Allaah, such as Malik al-Mulook (King of Kings). This is the consensus of the fuqaha’.

Ibn al-Qayyim said that names which belong only to Allaah include: al-Ahad (the One), al-Samad (the Eternal), al-Khaaliq (the Creator), al-Razzaaq (the Provider), al-Jabbaar (the Compeller), al-Mutakabbir (the Majestic), al-Awwal (the First), al-Aakhir (the Last), al-Baatin (the Hidden) and ‘Allaam al-Ghuyoob (the Knower of the Unseen). (Tuhfat al-Mawdood, p. 98).

The evidence that it is forbidden to call anyone by a name which belongs only to Allaah, such as Malik al-Mulook (king of kings), may be seen for example in the hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him); in the version narrated by al-Bukhaari, he said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The most despised name with Allaah on the Day of Resurrection will be a man called Malik al-Mulook.’” According to Muslim, he said, “The man who will most deserving of Allaah’s anger and most evil on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was called Malik al-Amlaak. There is no King except Allaah.”

As regards using names that may be used of Allaah or of others, it is permissible to use these names, such as ‘Ali (High), Rasheed (Guide) and Badee’ (Innovator or Originator).

Ibn ‘Aabideen said: “It seems to be the case that they are permitted, even if the definite article ‘al’ is used.” Al-Hasafi said: “What (these names) mean concerning us (human beings) is different from their meanings concerning Allaah, may He be exalted.”

It is forbidden to use names which befit no one except the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), such as Sayyid Walad Adam (master of the sons of Adam), Sayyid al-Naas (master of mankind), Sayyid al-Kull (master of all), because these names, as the Hanbalis said, befit no one except him, (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

It is forbidden to use any name which implies enslavement to anything besides Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, such as ‘Abd al-‘Uzza (slave of al-‘Uzza – a pagan goddess), ‘Abd al-Ka’bah (slave of the Ka’bah), ‘Abd al-Daar (slave of the House), ‘Abd ‘Ali (slave of ‘Ali), ‘Abd al-Husayn (slave of Husayn), etc.

It was stated in Haashiyat Ibn ‘Aabideen that one should not be called ‘Abd foolaan (slave of so-and-so).

It says in Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’: “They (the scholars) agreed that every name which implies enslavement to anything other than Allaah is forbidden, such as ‘Abd al-‘Uzza, ‘Abd ‘Amr, ‘Abd ‘Ali, ‘Abd al-Ka’bah, and any other similar names, such as ‘Abd al-Nabi (slave of the Prophet), ‘Abd al-Husayn, ‘Abd al-Maseeh (slave of the Messiah).” (Haashiyat Ibn ‘Aabideen, 5/268;Mughni al-Muhtaaj, 4/295; Tuhfat al-Muhtaaj, 10/373; Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’, 3/27; Tuhfat al-Mawdood, p. 90).

The evidence that it is forbidden to use any name which implies enslavement to anything other than Allaah may be seen in the report of Ibn Abi Shaybah from Yazeed ibn al-Miqdaam ibn Shurayh, from his father, from his grandfather Haani’ ibn Yazeed, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: “A delegation came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and he heard them calling someone ‘Abd al-Hajar (slave of the stone). He asked him, ‘What is your name?” and he said, ‘‘Abd al-Hajar.’ He said, ‘No, you are ‘Abd-Allaah (the slave of Allaah).’” (Al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah, 11/335).

Using the names of idols that are worshipped instead of Allaah.

Using foreign names, such as Turkish, Persian, Berber, etc. names, that have no origin in the Arabic language.

It is forbidden to use the names of devils (shayaateen), such as Khanzab, al-Walhaan, al-A’war and al-Ajda’. It was reported that the Sunnah is to change names such as these.

Names that are makrooh (disliked) may be categorized as follows:

1. It is makrooh to use names that have bad or distasteful meanings, or which sound odd, which would cause others to mock a person or would cause him embarrassment, in addition to being contrary to the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who taught us to choose good names.

2. It is makrooh to use names whose meanings are too soft and provocative or sexy, which is a widespread problem in the naming of girls.

3. It is makrooh to deliberately name someone after promiscuous actors and singers who star in worthless entertainment shows.

4. One of the signs of empty-headedness and lack of pride in one's faith is the fact that after a show starring immoral women, people will compete with one another in naming their newborns after these women. Anyone who checks the names registered at the time of one of these shows will see that this is a fact. And our complaining is to Allaah.

5. It is makrooh to use names that convey any sense of sin and disobedience to Allaah.

6. It is makrooh to use foreign names that belong only to the kuffaar.

7. The proud Muslim who is content with his religion will avoid this and not come anywhere near it. The temptation to use these names is very strong in our time, and a Muslim might pick up any name from Europe and America. This is the worst type of sin and a sign of humiliation and defeat. If this imitation of the kuffaar and using their names is merely the matter of whims and stupidity, it is nevertheless a major sin; if it is done because one actually believes these names are better than Muslim names, then this is a devastating blow to the foundation of faith. In either case, the person who has done this must hasten to repent, and changing the name is a condition of repentance.

8. It is makrooh to use the names of Pharaohs or other tyrants.

9. It is makrooh to use names that have any undesirable meaning.

10. It is makrooh to name people after animals that are known for their bad qualities. When the Arabs called their children by such names, it was because of good qualities that they noticed in them, and this was the desired meaning. So when they used the name Kalb (dog), it was because of the dog’s alertness and ability to work hard; when they used the name Himaar (donkey), it was because of the donkey’s patience and forbearance, and so on… This refutes the false arguments of the Shu’oobiyyah against the Arabs, as was explained by Ibn Durayd, Ibn Faaris, and others.

11. It is makrooh to use any name which is composed of any word added to such words as al-Deen (the Religion) or Islam, such as Noor al-Deen/Nuruddin (Light of the Religion), Diya’ al-Deen/Ziauddin (Brightness of the Religion), Sayf al-Islam (Sword of Islam), Noor al-Islam (Light of Islam), etc. This is because of the great status attached to these words, al-Deen and Islam. Adding words to them to form names is an exaggeration which borders on lying, which is why some scholars said that this is haraam, and the majority say that it is makrooh, because it gives an incorrect impression which should not be given. The way this practice started was that these were titles which were added to people’s names, then people started to use them as names.

12. Names of this sort may be forbidden for two reasons. In a name such as Shihaab al-Deen, for example, the word Shihaab means a flame, which comes from fire, then this is added to the word al-Deen (which is inappropriate). This can lead to the use of strange names, as in Indonesia, where people use names such as Dhahab al-Deen (gold of the Religion) and Maas al-Deen (diamond of the Religion)!

13. Imaam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him), use to dislike being called by his nickname Muhiy al-Deen, and Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) used to dislike being called by his nickname Taqiy al-Deen, and he said, “But my family gave me this nickname, so I am known by it.”

14. It is makrooh to use names that are composed of two parts, and this includes names which include the name of Allaah, with the exception of the name ‘Abd-Allaah (slave of Allaah), which is one of the most beloved names to Allaah. Names which include the word al-Rasool (the Messenger) are also makrooh.

15. Some of the scholars regarded using the names of angels (peace be upon them) as makrooh. Giving angels’ names to women is clearly haraam, because it implies imitation of the mushrikeen, who thought that the angels were the daughters of Allaah. Exalted be He above what they say!

16. Some of the scholars thought that it was makrooh to give people the names of Soorahs of the Qur’aan, such as Ta-Ha, Yaa-Seen, Ha-Meem. (The popular notion that Ya-Seen and Ta-Ha are names of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is not correct).

For a Muslim, it is forbidden to use names for babies that are meant for other religions such as using names that refer to other’s believes of god.
Muslims must not use names that may refer to believes of other religions such as their prophet, incidents, festivals and etc. Using these kinds of names might refer a person to other religion beside Islam and may cause conflict to happen. It can also be considered as inappropriate for the people of the religion since that the person’s religion is not the same.
A Muslim baby shouldn’t be named after worship items like Latta, ‘Uzza, Manat, Assah, Naailat, Hublu , Hindu purans, ancient Roman or Greek god-godess and others.

For the proper growth of your Muslim baby, do not use a girls name if he’s a boy and vice versa. This may seem unimportant but it may cause conflicts or the child may dislike his or her name when he realizes it. Most Muslim girls name have meanings that are related to girls attribute like beautiful and softness, thus using a name that means softness for a boy is very inappropriate. If possible, choose a name that has a good meaning instead of a name that doesn’t have any meaning at all. This might not affect anything; it’s just that it is good to refer your Muslim child to something nice or good rather than referring them to nothing at all.

 The best name for Muslim baby is ‘Abdullah’ and ‘Abdurrahman’.

 The most suitable name for Muslim baby is ‘Harits’ and ‘Hammam’.

 The most unsuitable, odd or bad name for Muslim baby is ‘Harb’ and ‘Murrah’.

 It is forbidden to use ‘Barrah’ as your Muslim baby name.

 It is forbidden to use bad names or names with improper meanings.

 It is forbidden to use Abdul (meaning ‘slave of’) to any other names except for the 99 names of Allah and Abdullah (meaning ‘slave of Allah’). Example – Abdul Ka’bah.

 It is forbidden to use the 99 names of Allah (Asmaa-ul Husnaa) if there is not Abdul in front of it. Example – Arrahman, Arrahim.

 It is forbidden to use non-Muslim’s names.

 It is forbidden to use names like Sultan, Salaatin, Syahansah, Sayyidun Nas, Sayyidul Kuli, Sayyidu Saadaat.

 It is forbidden to choose names of 'fetish' (worship items) like Latta, ‘Uzza, Manat, Assah, Naailat, Hublu, and others.

 It is forbidden to use names of wicked rulers like Fir’aun, Haman and others.

 It is forbidden to use devil names like Al-A’war, Al-Ajda, Khanzab etc.

 It is forbidden to use disgusting animal names.

 It is forbidden to use names that are opposite to all goodness.

 It is highly NOT encourage using names of angels.

 Do not use boy’s names for a girl, and vice versa.

 Do not use a name that doesn’t have any meaning.

 It is advice not to use very long names; most baby names during Prophet Muhammad PBUH only consist of one word.

 It is encourage to choose a name that is pronounce (in your own language) just like how it is pronounce in Arabic so that it wouldn’t change the meaning of the word.
There are also names which are contrary to the Shariah or which have meanings unacceptable to people of sound intellect and pure souls, so these names are to be avoided, since giving these names to the children would be a crime against their Deen (beliefs) and their manners because they would grow up connected to these names and the meanings which they carry.

The prohibited names are of two categories: those which are forbidden in the Shariah and those which are either disapproved of due to the Shariah, or due to manners and good taste.
FORBIDDEN NAMES

1. Names indicating servitude to other than Allah (SWT) such as: 'Abdun-Nabee (slave of the Prophet), 'Abdur-Rasool (slave of the Messenger) and 'Abdul - Muttalib - and whatever is like these names. Just the same in meaning are ‘Ghulaamun-Nabee’ and Ghulaamur-Rasool’.
2. Using these names which are particular names of Allah (SWT)- the One far removed from all deficiencies - like: al-Ahad (the One and Only, Unique in his Lordship, names and attributes, and His right to worship. The One having no equal, no assistant, no rival and no one similar to Him), ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) and al-Khaliq (the Creator).

3. From the names which should also be avoided are the names of tyrants and despots like: Fir'awn (Pharaoh), Qaroon, Abu Jahl and their like, also the names of the leaders of Kufr and the heads of atheism such as Marx, Lenin and so on, since using their names would mean that one was pleased with their actions, and would mean imitation of them, and love of their systems of thought - and all this is forbidden.
NAMES DISAPPROVED OF IN THE SHAREE'AH OR DISLIKED DUE TO GOOD MANNERS OR GOOD TASTE

1. Giving names which are meant to show servitude to Allah (SWT) but not known to be from Allah's (SWT) perfect names - like 'Abdul-Mawjood, Abdul-Maqsood and 'Abdus-Sattar. This is because nothing can be affirmed as one of Allah's (SWT) names without an authentic text, and these names do not satisfy this as they are rather attributes and information, so it is to be feared that in this way we might fall into giving Allah (SWT) names which neither He nor His Messenger (SAW) used for Him.

2. From these names are those which carry meanings of pessimism, or blameworthy characteristics which will be disliked or cause aversion or cause the possessor of the name to feel degraded, humiliated and such as will kill his personality - like Harb (war), Himar (donkey), and Kalb (dog) - and their like which are usually given as names by people of the desert of countryside.

3. From good manners is to avoid naming children with names which are suggestive or offend one's meaning of shame - such as: Huyam (one passionately in love), Nuhad (A young woman with full and raised breasts), Saham (summer heat)!, Wisal (sexual union), Ghadah (delicate young woman), Fatin (temptress), Fitnah (temptation), Shadiyah (female singer) and names with similar meanings.

So fathers and mothers should steer clear of giving these kind of names to their children - since they are mostly names carried by the lunatic film actresses and dancers and using these names may be a danger to the children’s personality and to their society - since they will grow up having an attachment and fondness for them along with the meaning they convey and for those infamous persons who carry these names. This may then lead them to imitate those people and follow their way, slowly losing their Islamic personality - and it is to Allah (SWT) that we turn for aid.

4. It is also disliked to give names which amount to a declaration of a person's being pious like: Barrah (pious / piety) and the like - due to this meaning the Messenger of Allah (SAW) changed the name of one of his wives from Barrah to Zaynab, as he used to hate that it be said: "He left/went out from 'Barrah' (piety)."

5. From these names which it is disliked to use for naming are the names of the Angels. Particularly if they are used for females - such as Malik since it is to be feared that this involves imitation of the pagans who gave feminine names to the angels. But as regards to their use for males - then that is disliked by Malik, but allowed by a group of the scholars since the Hadith prohibiting it is not authentic.

6. Just as it is disliked to name with the names of Surahs of the Quran such as: TaHa, Yaseen and other names of Surahs. This is the saying of Imam Malik (Ra) - Ibnul- Qayyim also said: "The saying of the common people that Yaseen and TaHa are from the names of the Prophet (SAW) is not correct, there is no 'Sahih' Hadith about it or any 'Hasan' Hadith, nor anything 'Mursal' [having a missing link between the Tabiee and the Prophet (SAW)], nor any narration from any Companion, but rather they are letters like 'Alif Lam Meem', 'Ha Meem', 'Alif Lam Raa' and the like."

7. It is disliked to give names 'Yasar' (Ease), 'Rabah' (Profit), 'Najeeh' (Successful), 'Aflah' Prosperous), 'Ya'la' (Elevated)' and Barakah' (Blessing) since the Messenger (SAW) forbade that with his saying:

"Do not call your boy Yasar, nor Rabah, nor Najeeh, nor Aflah, since you will say: Is he there?' So it will be said: 'No'. Indeed they are four, so do not attribute more to me." (Reported by Muslim, Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhee)

And the forbiddence of Ya'a and Barakah occurs in another Hadith reported by Muslim.
CHANGING PROHIBITED NAMES

The Messenger (SAW) used to love names which were good in their wording and meaning and he used to hate other names, prohibit them and change them. From these names which the Messenger (SAW) changed was:

· ‘Aasiyah (Disobedient) - he changed her name to Jameelah (Beautiful and Good) (Reported by Muslim & Abu Dawud)
· He (SAW) also said to a man, "What is your name?" So he replied: "Hazn." (Roughness). So he (SAW) said: "Rather you are Sahl (Smooth)." (Reported by Al-Bukhari & Abu Dawud)

· ‘Barrah (Pious Woman) to Zaynab (Reported by Muslim)

· As-Surm (Separation) to Sa’eed (Al-Bukhari)

· Asram (Cut Off) to Zur’ah (Sown Seed) (Reported by Abu Dawud)

· Jaththamah (Signifying Inactivity) to Husanah (Good and Beautiful) (Reported by al-Hakim)

· Shihab (Flame and Fire) to Hisham (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

· Harb (War) to Silm (Peace) (Reported by Abu Dawud)

· Banuz-Zinyah (Sons of Fornication) to Banur-Rashdah (Sons of Lawful Marriage) (Reported by Abu Dawud).
