The results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and other international standardized tests have brought attention to the poor performance of Filipino learners, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the quality of education in our country today. Filipino students are falling behind in critical areas, particularly math and science, ranking 77th among 81 countries in the 2022 PISA rankings released in December 2023.

Embracing the theme "Armed and Equipped: Nurturing Future-Ready Citizens with Leveled-Up STEAM Learning and Robotics," these young tech innovators showcased exceptional creativity, engineering skills, and problem-solving expertise.

Authentic assessment for evidence-based teaching, learning dynamics, and evaluation of students’ skills achievement.
Educational technology to help students and teachers familiarize themselves with the world of work.
Capacity building and professional development for institutions, and especially teachers, to effectively deliver these programs.

“We work closely with every partner and institution to ensure schools are ready to assist learners in their STEAM journey. We provide training and workshops to help empower teachers and instructors, enabling them to become competent STEAM enthusiasts who can, in turn, arm and equip our learners,” Paras added.

In his keynote, REX CEO Don Timothy Buhain reflected on the Philippines’ low PISA ranking, calling it “a challenge for all of us” and prompting the audience to consider these vital questions: How are we teaching STEAM in our schools? Are we truly giving our learners all the tools and support they need to succeed in the real world?

In line with this, PISA has introduced in its ninth cycle a new, innovative domain: Learning in a Digital World, which assesses students’ ability to learn and thrive in digital environments alongside its usual evaluations of core skills in math and science. FEI and Rex Education’s STEAM-STRONG initiative aims to help improve Filipino learners’ performance in PISA and prepare them for a digital, technology-driven future.

The special event also marked the launch of the Partnership Graduate Studies Program with First City Providential College, an institution granted autonomous status by the Commission on Higher Education. The program will offer advanced learning opportunities in STEAM and robotics education to further empower educators. Additionally, the event included the soft launch of the Federation of Robotics Schools in the Philippines, an organization dedicated to advancing coding, robotics, and STEAM learning nationwide through various programs and activities.

A total of 55 schools have signed up for FEI’s robotics program for SY 2024–2025, including St. Mary’s College (Quezon City), which showcased an agricultural robot prototype designed to help Filipino farmers cultivate their fields. This demonstration highlights both the far-reaching impact of robotics in various aspects of life and the exceptional talent of Filipino students in this high-tech field.

Comedy Queen AiAi Delas Alas recently announced that she will no longer be the manager of XBatallion. This happened due to a number of incidence of the latter's unprofessionalism.

According to Delas Alas, she has considered to resign as their manager long ago but she was considering their movie with Viva Films.

"Actually, matagal na sana akong magre-resign, hindi ko lang tinuloy dahil nahihiya ako sa Viva kasi merun kaming film na lalabas. And since lumabas naman na yung film, okey na para masabi kong magre-resign na ako" AiAi explained.

She already consulted legal matters about this because they have a 2-year contract and she still need to manage the group for 8 months.

"Sabi ng lawyer ko okey akong mag-quit kasi sila naman ang may problema." AiAi added.

"Lumapit sila sa'kin para tulungan ko sila at tinulungan ko sila,tapos parang di nila na-appreciate, wala silang respeto pati sa RM nila at they don't trust me. Maraming factors para tumagal ka sa industriyang ito, kailangan mo makisama, maayos kausap, masunurin, ma-integridad at hindi lang dahil sa magaling ka." she ended.

At the age of 95, Mr. Juan Ponce Enrile is the oldest politician running for the public office in the Philippines today. He finished his 4th term as senator last June 2016 and decided to file again his certificate of candidacy for senator last October 17, 2018 for the 2019 national elections.

In a recent press conference with the media and bloggers, we inquired about his #GustoKoHappyKa slogan. In English, it literally means "I want you to be happy"

We asked what exactly it means, and he replied that he wants the Filipino nation to be happy in life and not lose hope in the situation our country is in today.

On the other hand, we also asked what makes him happy. He simple replied: "to be at peace" Enrile shared.

As for his candidacy, will his credentials bring him his 5th win for the senate? The old but goody former senator enumerated his achievements over the years.

A few days ago, I attended an intimate gathering of bloggers to meet and greet Pasay City Mayoralty candidate Chet Cuneta. I was able to get to know him as a person and was able to learn his plans for Pasay City.

Chet who just celebrated his 58th birthday last May 1, is the brother of Mega Star Sharon Cuneta. He is a pilot by profession in Air Asia Philippines and if fortunate this coming election, is the time for him to retire from aviation and work full time for Pasay City. During his free time, he loves to watch K-dramas with his wife Michelle.

If there would be one person that could best describe Chet as an individial, it would be his wife Michelle. They have been together for 11 years. Unfortunately for Angkas Philippines motorcycle drivers, it doesn't seem to be the case as the recent Supreme Court temporary restraining order (TRO) prevents Angkas motorcycle taxi vehicles to run as public utility vehicles (PUV) in favor of the LTFRB.

Former LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez reiterated in his post that Angkas should be allowed to operate and that the LTFRB and the DOTr have the power to legitimize and regulate the ride-hailing service.

Congressman Castelo, Chairman of the House Committee on Metro Manila Development, likewise urged the DOTr to allow Angkas to continue its operation for the sake of public interests.

In a recent statement, Castelo said the DOTr can issue a Department Order to allow Angkas’ ride-hailing operations in the same manner that transportation network companies (TNC) or transport network vehicle services (TNVS) like Grab were allowed to do so.

“A mere DO can suffice to lessen the suffering of the commuting public. DOTr should realize this. If they cannot provide efficient and reliable mass transportation system as they are mandated to do, they should at least be creative and use modern technology. We should not be technical and legalistic on this while millions of Filipinos are suffering from traffic and losing PHP2 billion in lost opportunities,” Castelo said.

Rep. Johnny T. Pimentel of Surigao del Sur, in turn, decried the timing of the SC order. “Actually, the TRO is only temporary, however, the timing is not right considering the Christmas rush. Many commuters are having a hard time getting a ride. This will again be a big burden to our traveling public,” Pimentel said in a news report.

The Mobility Coalition, an alliance of organizations supporting commuter welfare, also recently issued a statement supporting Angkas. In the statement, the group said that they are disheartened by the recent Supreme Court decision and declared their support of the "regulation of motorcycle taxis as a public transport option"

Moreover, around 130,000 netizens have signed an online petition calling on the government to “Save Angkas” and regulate motorcycle taxis instead of prohibiting them from operating. The number of signatories continue to increase for the change.org petition.

The LTFRB continues to insist that motorcycles are unfit for passenger transport due to safety issues. Angkas officials stress, however, that the LTFRB has consistently ignored Angkas' safety record as well as proof of the precautions it takes to ensure passenger safety, including biker training and assessment, quality helmets, and accident insurance.

Angkas Riders Join Unity Ride

Around a thousand Angkas riders, who suddenly found themselves at the receiving end of LTFRB apprehensions, joined a massive Unity Ride last Sunday as they decry the LTFRB's continued drive to shut down their operations permanently.

The Unity Ride, which denounced government discrimination of motorcycle riders, saw around 2,000 bikers from different motorcycle clubs in Metro Manila and nearby provinces going from the Kalayaan Shrine on EDSA, heading northward towards Centris near Quezon Avenue, then making a U-turn to head back to the Kalayaan Shrine.

The Angkas riders have been airing their frustration over not being able to serve the commuters and earn a living, in the light of a recent Supreme Court Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) junking a previous RTC injunction that prevented the LTFRB from apprehending Angkas riders. Angkas officials, on the other hand, clarified that they are not in defiance of the SC TRO, despite their frustration over its issuance.

"We are will and continue to comply with the Supreme Court TRO" Angkas Head of Regulatory and Public Affairs George Royeca clarified.

"As such, we will not prevent the LTFRB from apprehending our bikers and have instructed them to comply with the authorities should they be apprehended and always be courteous and respectful of the officers."

Royeca also revealed that Angkas officials have been reaching out to DOTR and LTFRB for an open dialogue with them to find solutions for the Filipino riding public.

Cry for "Save Angkas"

"Using various media channels, the LTFRB has made clear its intent to crack down on Angkas bikers, citing a very narrow interpretation of the law. Yet we have on various occasions presented the LTFRB with different options to move forward together," Royeca noted. "We have always believed that regulation, not prohibition, is key," he added.

Because of the apprehensions initiated by the LTFRB, many of the Angkas bikers are scared of going out and taking rides from commuters. "This has put around 25,000 of our rider-partners out of a decent livelihood, and during the holiday season, too, when their families need their income the most," David Medrana, Angkas Operations Head, stressed.

"It is also unfortunate that the Supreme Court issued the TRO at a time when hundreds of thousands of commuters need the Angkas service to beat the worsening holiday traffic," Medrana rued.

Angkas Philippines in support for the industry

Angkas rider-partner Romeo Maglungsod, Chairman of Solid Manila Riders Club, denounced the harassment of the LTFRB and decried his sudden loss of livelihood. "Napakasakit po ng nangyari sa amin. Sa isang iglap, bigla na lang kaming nawalan ng hanapbuhay," Maglungsod said.

"The LTFRB has been claiming that they are doing this because of safety reasons," Medrana also noted. "But, we are proud to say that Angkas has a safety record of 99.997% considering all our rider-partners and all their trips. This is much higher than the safety record of all non-Angkas motorcycle riders in the country and proves how serious we are in our commitment to the safety of our riders and their passengers," he revealed.

The Filipino Inventors Society (FIS) was \ founded by an intrepid imagineering triad of Teo Puruganan, Pastor Reyes-Torres and Dalmacio Buenaventura in the middle of World War II in 1943.

Subsequently incorporated in 1953 as a Dissnon-stock, non-profit NGO, the Filipino Inventors Society pre-ponderatingly aims in promoting the interests of inventors and their work by providing assistance in developing, protecting, and locating markets for their inventions, utility models and industrial designs; diffusing information relating to industrial intellectual property; speaking for inventors nationwide; and, cooperating with similarly bent persons and entities.

Engaging achievements of FIS include the first National Exhibition of Inventions in 1957.

This set the stage for Filipino inventors trying its hand lobbying Congress for the inclusion of invention development assistance in government’s priority agenda. In 1961, talks of setting up an inventors’ foundation were bandied about between FIS and inventors in government service no sooner than FIS advocated for a specialized government institution to assist inventors. Again it resorted to lobbying, this time for a protracted period of four years before the bill creating the Philippine Inventors Commission (PIC) was passed in 1964.

Philippine Invention Development Institute

PIC, the creation of FIS, was renamed Philippine Invention Development Institute (PIDI) in 1982. In 1967, FIS initiated and organized in cooperation with PIC the observance of the first Inventors’ Week, a week-long extravaganza wherein amateur and professional inventors competed for glory in a national contest of their exhibited inventions and innovations.

In 1970, the PIC, in association with FIS, launched an educative initiative jumpstarting innovative skills among the youth, a forerunner of the present Inventschool and Creativity Cram School flagship program by FIS affiliate Manila Innovation Development Society (MINDS), Inc., headed by FIS Director Virgilio Malang.

Thereafter, the controversial Martial Law, President Marcos, heeding a petition by FIS, issued Presidential Decree No. 1423 dated 1978 June 9, that:

(a) created an Invention Guarantee Fund to assure the unsecured portion of industrial loans for the exploitation and manufacture of any registered Filipino invention, utility model or industrial design;
(b) granted a five-year exemption from all taxes and fees for inventors in the manufacture and commercialization of their industrial IPs
(c) enabled financial aid for prototyping and patenting.

FIS also secured Proclamation 187 that paved the way for the national annual observation of Inventors’ Week, a much touted activity until 1988 when, consequent to the upheaval by the EDSA Revolution, President Marcos was deposed and replaced by Corazon Aquino.

Filipino Inventors Society

Among her first almost knee-jerk official acts was to abrogate PD1423 fondly reminiscent of the previous dispensation – and thereby effectively annulled all tax exemptions and simply abolished all incentives and privileges hard won by inventors for themselves. President Aquino further abolished PIDI and replaced it with the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

In time, devastated FIS members cast away their doomsday masks to face reality. They quickly regrouped and, under the FIS banner, marched back to their familiar trenches in Congress to fight for the passage of a legislation better than PD 1423 (with no inkling they would have to dig in their heels this time for a long haul – seven years!).

Eventually, FIS pulled yet another coup with the passage of Republic Act 7459, also known as the Inventor and Inventions Incentives Act of 1992. Despite the title of the Act, however, incentives under its compromise provisions were not exclusively for inventions but for “technologies developed by local researchers or adapted locally from foreign sources including inventions”. This has underlain subsequent confusion in priorities.

The other blot on this generally reassuring, even cheering piece of legislation, is that since its implementation, nobody, at least at FIS, seems to fully grasp how it operates. Hence, FIS has feverishly been petitioning for a revised set of implementing guidelines in simple, understandable terms which, hopefully, FIS and TAPI will cogently draft in the very near future.

FIS also linked up with the academe for research and development. It has standing agreements with the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and De La Salle University to provide members with an outlet for their commercial creations.

FIS spearheaded the establishment of the Filipino Inventors’ Multipurpose Cooperative (FIMCOOP) with a retail store, products display, and office at Quezon City. For an extended period, FIMCOOP was headed by Chairman Virgilio Malang. To locate markets abroad for commercialized inventions and innovations of members, FIMCOOP established the Filipino Inventors Export-Import, Inc. whose incorporators include FIS Saudi Arabia Chapter.

Since it was established, FIS did not have a permanent place of business to call its own. Now, work has stalled but may soon resume on a planned Php 30 million Philippine Invention Development Center (PIDC) funded by Congress, once more, at the instigation of FIS.

The building shall serve as the national hub for the interaction of all inventors, including the unaffiliated and other IP rights holders and proponents. The multifaceted center will consist of four elements:

a national headquarters for the umbrella organization for national inventors, the FIS, its chapters and affiliates;
a conference center;
a permanent exhibition floor
a learning/resource center featuring a computerized library facility to serve as national storehouse of information on inventions and innovations.

Further, the Filipino Inventors Society received assurance for another Php 30 million for the purchase of research and development equipment for the facility. This is one mega plum for FIS.

According to Proclamation No. 479, President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 14, 2018 as a special non-working holiday for the Filipino people to be able to vote on the upcoming Barangay Elections and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections nationwide.

“Monday, 14 May 2018 should be declared a special non-working day to enable the people to fully exercise their right of suffrage,” states the proclamation.

Earlier, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has requested Duterte to announce May 14 as a holiday through Resolution No. 10301.

North Luzon Express Terminal Finished by 2020

The Build, Build, Build! program of the Duterte government continues as the North Luzon Express Terminal is eyed to be fully operational come 2020. It aims help decongest Metro Manila traffic.

To be situated at the Ciudad de Victoria complex owned by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) in Bocaue, Bulacan, the said bus terminal will be the fourth integrated terminal.

The terminal could accommodate 96,000 daily passengers going to and from the north. It is said that with this, transport officials are expecting the number of buses in Edsa to be diminished by 6,000.

Among the other terminals that are under construction include the Taguig Integrated Terminal Exchange and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange. The Metro Manila Eastern Multimodal Terminal in Marikina, meanwhile, started operations last year.

Just last week, a memorandum of understanding was signed by transport and public works officials with the North Luzon Express Terminal for the construction of the 11.5-hectare transport hub.

MRT-3 Ride Now FREE for Soldiers

It's our heroe's time! It's our beloved soldiers' turn! The Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) has started giving all military personnel and soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) free train rides!

The MRT-3 said in a statement that the free ride treat for all uniformed personnel which started on April 25 was in line with the memorandum of agreement (MOA) that is slated to be signed with the AFP.

Also part of the signed agreement is AFP’s provision of ambulance and medical teams for assistance during emergency and crisis situations upon advance coordination with the MRT-3 management.

Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugalde said that the MOA is a way of being grateful for the military’s sacrifices for the betterment of the country.

According to MRT-3 media relations officer Aly Narvaez, the said agreement will last until April 25, 2019.

“All active military personnel may avail themselves of an MRT-3 ride free of charge upon showing their AFP identification cards, which will serve as their access pass. Validity of the service shall last for one year,” according to the MRT-3 management.

Similar to the MRT-3, soldiers are also entitled to free LRT 2 rides until December 2, 2018 following the agreement signing between the AFP and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) in December 2017.

In a conferment ceremony in Malacañang, the PNP Medal of Valor were awarded as the highest award of the PNP given to any member of the PNP who delivered an act of bravery and self-sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty.

“The extraordinary display of bravery during the faithful just does not qualify them to receive the highly coveted decoration, it makes them worthy to be called as heroes,” the says President Rodrigo Duterte.

The economic cooperation between China and the Philippines is bringing more fruits as president Rodrigo Duterte’s recent visit in China as the said trip brought in about $9 billion in new investments that would generate at least 10,000 jobs.

In his speech upon arriving in Davao City following a four-day trip to China and Hong Kong, Duterte said that he emphasized on the trip the Philippines’ bid to generate more investments into the country.

“I stressed our emphasis on infrastructure, innovation and interconnectivity to drive domestic growth. Most importantly, we received support for the Philippines’ plans for inclusive growth and sustainable development,” the President said.

The President went to China’s Hainan province to attend the Boao Forum for Asia, and visited Hong Kong to meet Filipino workers.

More Investments

Aside from this, China and the Philippines has also sealed a memorandum of understanding which will result on the employment of 2,000 Filipino English-language teachers.

China also gave a 500-million renminbi, or PhP 4-billion grant to the Philippines which he would suggest the Congress to use to build and rehabilitate hospitals in Mindanao.

While territorial dispute in the South China Sea was not discussed, Duterte said that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have another bilateral meeting to reaffirm commitments on strengthening relations between countries.

“We both underscored the need for futher intensified cooperation, trade and investments, tourism, agriculture, defense, science and technology and energy, among other things,” Duterte mentioned. “The Philippines will continue to seek the expansion of areas for mutually beneficial collaboration consistent with our laws.”

Duterte said that his recent visit in China is not the right time to discuss the South China Sea dispute, saying that doing so might affect the trip’s main purpose.

Good news for the workers in Boracay as the island is to undergo rehabilitation! The government will be allocating PhP 2-billion worth of calamity assistance to workers who will be affected by the six-month closure of Boracay as per the Philippine government.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is inclined to place Boracay under state of calamity to enable the release of the appropriate funds for displaced small people during the rehabilitation period, spokesman Harry Roque said.

“There will be a declaration of a state of calamity but the President was insistent that the funds that will be spent will go only to the workers who will be displaced. He will not let any resort owner benefit from any sort of a calamity fund,” Roque added.

The funds will possibly be sourced from the calamity budget of the national government and the concerned local government unit, Roque furthered.

Duterte recently approved the recommendation of an inter-agency task force to close Boracay to tourists for the next six months.

The temporary closure will begin on April 26 to allow the massive rehabilitation of the island, including dismantling of illegal structures, and improving sewage systems.

“Siguro maiiba ang trabaho nila, pero magkakaroon pa rin sila ng trabaho sa dami ng dapat gawin sa Boracay. So you can imagine na although there are 35,000 workers in Boracay, not all of them will be jobless. They will just have to change jobs for the time being,” he said.

Roque also pointed out that not all of the 35,000 workers in Boracay will lose their jobs. He said they don’t have to leave the island because alternative jobs will be given during the rehabilitation period.

Technical-Vocational Courses from TESDA

Together with this is seen the rise in demand for technical-vocational work and professionals in the Philippines in the coming years.

Even on the global scale, the labor market is in need of global skilled workers who are products of technical-vocational education and training (TVET), equipped with practical and soft skills, backed up with professional subjects, and are licensed to perform their duty.

Technical-Vocational Training

Progressive countries are known to excel in the technical- vocational (techvoc) industry. For one, Singapore makes headlines for always introducing new methods, new ideas, and new products. Japan constantly introduces something new, and is always No. 1 in technology innovation.

Unfortunately, much has to be desired in the Philippines’s tech-voc industry where graduates are looked down as second-class citizens, and whose products and services are questioned for their quality and efficacy.

“Public perception has not been kind to TVET service-oriented professional occupations. Many hold an unfounded perception that those who engage in technical and vocational occupations are academically inept to handle real college academic work. This has been aggravated by unfair categorization that a student taking a baccalaureate degree is intelligently superior, while a student of a vocational course is academically deficient. As such, many families endeavor to send their children to take college degree courses, despite the financial quagmire they are in, only to be disappointed later as their children cannot be employed in jobs that are related to their respective courses, or put it otherwise, job mismatch,” shares Antonio Matias Galvez, popularly known as Tony Galvez, a tech-voc guru and an expert in the tech-voc education and training industry in the country.

Galvez’s first proposal is for the classification of TVET track programs into either livelihood tracks and professional tracks, which will allow proper regulations for both tracks.

TVET Livelihood Tracks are product-oriented, such as, a particular skill of making decorative objects by hand. It is also system of production which takes place in private homes rather than in a factory, with the tools and other means of production.

TVET Professional Tracks are service-oriented professions. Its entry requirement is high school graduate. The proper exercise of tech-voc professional tracks will be to the best interest of the public to ensure the protection of the people’s health, safety and welfare.

His second proposal is the professionalization of TVET service oriented courses

Unfortunately, the tech-voc professional tracks have remained unregulated and have not been recognized as regular professions in the Philippines.

The tech-voc profession is not just a simple trade. It involves public interest, a vehicle for identifying competent practitioners by screening out the incompetent through a governing code of ethical standards.

Galvez said there is nothing wrong with providing short-term TVET service oriented professional tracks’ programs. For these courses address head-on the pressing concern of putting food on the table

However, short-term and quick-fix solutions have short-lived existence, thereby, putting sustainability into serious question. With sustainability lacking, it is tantamount to not fully recouping the social or even economic return on government investment.

“We, tech-voc practitioners, may be partners of the government in reaching out to the masses, to barangays and even to far flung areas by teaching them skills for livelihood but it doesn’t mean we don’t need to improve and become world class,” he said.

TVET needs equal footing in terms of education and training of the technical and vocational graduates—who in the future can teach and be employed as consultants. There are a lot of opportunities for those who persevere in the right education and training. Let us make every opportunity to make our citizen professional because they will eventually boost the economy of our country.

With this, the Philippines can Pilot Development of Diploma Courses Based on the PQF and Ladderized Education on TVET service-oriented sectors/industries such as the following: Housekeeping, Culinary Arts, Emergency Medical Services, Cosmetology, Construction Services, Automotive, Electronics, Tourism, Information Technology, Health Care Services, Executive Assistantship and Security Services Program Law.

Carrying this out would entail a creation of a regulatory board. Experts will seat as a consultant and a regulatory body of each industry that will police, and mandate the training regulations and assessment methods.

“The TVET industry board shall regulate graduates to ensure highly competitive tech-voc practitioners. It is necessary, so that we cannot be left behind in the race for economic growth in introducing new methods, new ideas, new products and more productive life that will encourage technology creation, invention and innovation. “Let us make record in techvoc excellence, both products and services. Let us adopt a higher TVET qualifications.”

There is an imminent need to create an industry board for different tech-voc occupations/professions and to be mandated to conduct licensure examination for tech-voc graduates and practitioners.

To set and maintain professional standards on particular skills that require mastery and expertise before being practiced;
To enhance the professionalism and integrity of skilled workers by regulating practitioners and penalizing acts of malpractice;
To resolve the image concern of the tech-voc profession resulting to enticing more Filipinos to take the path for their future careers thus addressing the labor market mismatch;
To persuade technical and vocational schools improve their curriculum (the heart of education), faculties (the mentors), facilities (the battleground), and course hour (the units).

“As there will be an Industry Regulatory Body for tech-voc occupations, tech-voc practitioners can be easily recognized anywhere in the world. With an active and dynamic licensing system of technical occupations, it is now easier for any industry to link with international accrediting organizations. Also, the government will stand to gain from the licensing fees collected from technical and vocational practitioners,” Galvez said.

And of course, he added, when the government invests in a sustainable program such as technical and vocational programs where a vast number of technically inclined and proficient Filipinos are benefited, the social and economic returns will run exponentially. Indeed, the economic permutations are enormous when it comes to the tech-voc industry. It would spell jobs and more jobs.

“Let us make the tech-voc occupation a globally recognized profession, by producing globally competitive graduates not just Asean, but a globally recognized TVET qualifications and standards,” Galvez said.

“Innovation in tech-voc education and training program and curriculum is a must. It’s time to make a change for a better tech-voc education in our country. It’s time to put our TVET qualifications high. Let us set the standard. If Singapore and Japan did it, we can also do it. This is the Philippines and Filipinos have always been a winner by heart. We can even make the Philippines become the center of tech-voc education in Asia,” he concluded.

It was led by Dr. Rizaldy Pinzon who came all the way from Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta and Duta Wacana Christian University School of Medicine, Yogyakarta in Indonesia.

Peripheral Neuropathy can be acquired or hereditary

This new clinical study (Asian Journal of Medical Sciences, Jan 2018) has brought a major step forward for nerve health:

it has demonstrated that an effective treatment helps relieve all neuropathy symptoms (observed in the study), regardless of the cause of peripheral neuropathy.

It was conducted to investigate efficacy and safety up to 90 days (with 5 different visit over time) and use of fixed dose combination of Vitmain B1 (100mg), Vitamin B6 (100 mg), and Vitamin B12 (5000ug) once-a-day over meals with a sample size of 411 patients across 8 centers in Indonesia (multicenter study over a period of 1 year from December 2015 to December 2016).

Whether the patients were suffering from numbness, pain or paraesthesia (usually painless sensation like tingling or itching, often felt in the arms and feet) they experienced relief on all these symptoms. It was also observed that the longer they used the treatment, the more relief the patients felt from these symptoms.

In summary, the observational, non-interventional clinical study confirms the benefits of a unique treatment for all. Art Basel Fair in Hong Kong Featured Pinoy Artworks

It's another proud moment for Pinoys in Hong Kong as our fellow 'kababayan''s art works were featured in the recently held Basel Fair towards the end of last month.

Among the artwork was a large installation of mixed images revelling carefree! Moreover, there was also a painting of the devil fighting an opposing skeleton and a peaceful portrait of a Romblon marble worker.

The Art Basel Fair was organized by Filipina Isa Lorenzo of Silverlens featuring works fromFilipinos Norberto Roldan, Pow Martinez, Gregory Halili, and Chati Coronel. They will also be joined by international artists Maria Taniguchi and Yee I-Lann, among others.

Dealers, collectors, and gallery owners are expected to flock Pace Gallery which has locations in different countries.

"We also get clients from everywhere in Asia. A large number of the collectors come from South Korea," said Leng Lin, partner and Asia president of Pace Gallery, in a quote from ABS-CBN article.

Congratulations to Art Basel Hong Kong who ran the fair from March 29-31, 2018, featuring 248 galleries from 32 countries and territories this year.

Filipinos' hope never ceases even amidst war. And with Mindanao's battle-torn city of Marawi having survived a great destruction from the recentwar, its citizens rises-up from the ashes of what remains.

With this, the Philippine Army thought it would be significant to document the success and survival stories of people who fought the effects of war and fought for survival.

Searheaded by the Philippine Army’s Operations Research Center, the army just launched the Joint Task Force Marawi Handbooks which highlights achievements in crisis.

“As we commemorate the unfortunate memories of the crisis and remember the destruction caused by the enemy, we also keep in our hearts and minds the lessons learned in the military operations throughout the five-month long battle,” said Lt. Gen. Rolando Joselito D. Bautista, Commanding General, Philippine Army.

Lt. Gen. Bautista was the Commander of Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division and Joint Task Force Marawi during the Marawi crisis where government troops engaged the ISIS-Maute terrorist group in the fiercest military combat operations in recent Philippine History.

65 soldiers and policemen died and more than a thousand were wounded in the main battle area.

Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, Special Assistant to the President said: “I’m extending the nation’s gratitude to our soldiers and policemen who fought bravely and honorably during the battle of Marawi. Although winning the battle cost us numerous lives, their deeds during the five-month long crisis have allowed us to liberate not only the city but the entire country from the clutches of violence and terror. These books will not only immortalize the exploits of our men and women in uniform but will also serve as a reminder for future generations about the sacrifices they offered in retaking the City of Maraw.”

“As we engaged the enemy during the crisis in lethal operations and the same time the affected communities in non-combat operations, we were able to strategically and efficiently combine hard power and soft power approaches. At the same time it projected a positive image of the Philippine Army. These are exemplified in the Joint Task Force Marawi handbooks. Digital media, including social media played a very significant role in our innovative ventures in the virtual battle field in the online world toward translating tactical gains in the main battle area into strategic victories from the eyes of affected communities and the Filipino nation,” Lt. Gen. Bautista said.

Joint Task Force Marawi Handbooks

The handbook series, which covers Joint Task Force Marawi combat and non-combat operations, is a compendium of stories immortalized in a series of books.

“It is an enduring documentation of actual experiences and achievement on the ground during the crisis. In order to keep an intended tone of book presentation, the handbooks were designed for specific internal and external audiences,” Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, Director of Operations Research Center, Philippine Army.

Lt. Col. Herrera added that the Philippine Army Operations Research Center will always be open to accept new challenges and opportunities as they accurately document the significant milestones including insights and analysis for future references both in print and online.

Pinoys are 'Happiest' Now, says SWS Survey!

Filipinos almost always ranks high in surveys of happiest people in the world. It's not a surprising news actually since in our culture, a simple life is mostly preferred as long as we have good family ties.

But this year's 'Happiness' results are a bit different as we hit 'record-high' number of Filipinos according to a nationwide survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) from Dec. 8 to 16, 2017.

It revealed that 94% of Filipino adults were “very/fairly happy,” while 92% said they were “very/fairly satisfied.”

For the “very/fairly satisfied,” the SWS said it was “4 points above the September 2017 score of 88%, and 2 points above the previous record of 90% in September 2016. It has been scoring at the upper 80s since September 2014.”

Mindanao had the most number of “happy” Filipinos with 96 percent, followed by Luzon with 95 percent, Visayas with 94 percent, and Metro Manila with 90 percent.

'This is 4 points above the 90% very/fairly happy in September 2017, and 3 points above the previous record of 92% in June 1996,” the SWS said in a media release on Tuesday.

Formal Education Helps

Among the responders, happiness and satisfaction were most evident among Filipinos who have had formal education, it seems.

It showed that happiness was at 97% among high school graduates, 94% among college graduates, 92 percent among elementary graduates and 90% among non-elementary graduates.

It should be noted that the survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults, aged 18 years old and above, nationwide. As a survey, it has a nationwide margin of error of ±3%.
