Sad to say, the highlight of the 2013 Billboard Music Awards was none other than R&B artist Miguel, who while attempting a stage-jump during his performance, inadvertently fell off-target and ‘leg-dropped’ a fan. The hip hop icon, never afraid to push the boundaries, gave the world it’s first taste of his new album on Friday night by projecting visuals for his new song on 66 different buildings across the world. The new song, provacatively titled “New Slaves”, was projected in cities including New York, Toronto, Chicago, London, Paris and Berlin. Among some of the building targeted included Wrigley Field in Chicago, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the wall of a 5th Avenue Prada store in NYC, among other locations.

Featuring a Curtis Mayfield sample from the classic song “Don’t Worry”, the lyrics of the new record “New Slaves” are almost remeniscent of the “College Dropout” Yeezy, which touch on topics including racism and consumerism. The song opens up with the verse:

“My mama was raised in the era when/ Clean water was only served to the fairer skin.”

‘Ye also philosophizes about back-in-the-days when he was broke and not being able to “touch anything in the store”; and now that he’s rich, society is encouraging him to “buy more”, with lyrics like:

“What you want a Bentley, fur coat, a diamond chain/ All you blacks want all the same things.”

The New Album will be Kanye’s sixth studio album, and is rumored to be droppin’ on June 18th and entitled “Yeezus”. Stay tuned to GoodFellaz TV as more information on the New album becomes available. Things continue to shake-up in the office at Def Jam Records. After the recent departures of Joie Manda (who left his position as label president to takeover the Urban department of Interscope Records) and former-Senior VP of A&R Sha Money XL (leaving for a similar spot at Epic Records), the ‘house-that-Russell-built’ has announced the promotion of Shawn “Pecas” Costner as Def Jam’s New Executive Vice President.

An exec at the label since 2005, Shawn Pecas previously worked at Elektra and Arista Records in the early 2000′s. He has served as Senior VP of the label for the last 3 years, and had this to say regarding the new spot:

“Def Jam [Records] is the greatest Hip Hop label in the world and it is an honor and a privilege to work with such incredible artists every day. I am appreciative of [Island Def Jam Records President] Steve Bartels for his leadership and his continued faith in me as we move the Def Jam brand into the future. With our talented staff, an unprecedented roster of superstars and an exciting crop of newcomers, we are poised to win big in 2013 and beyond.”

Technology continues to reshape the music biz! The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has recently announced the integration of music streaming into its Gold and Platinum Certification Program. Adjusting to the increased popularity of ‘music streaming’ as a viable alternative for listening to music, On-demand audio and/or video song streams will now be counted towards the 500,000 (Gold), 1,000,000 (Platinum) and 2,000,000 plus (multi-Platinum) certifications of Songs & Albums.

This includes streaming from on-demand services including Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG, Muve Music, Rdio, Slacker, Xbox Music and others, plus video streaming services such as MTV.com, VEVO, Yahoo! Music, YouTube and more. This recognition works retroactively as well, meaning that music-stream data will also be ‘tallied-up’ for already certified songs, which will increase their numbers even more.

According to RIAA:

“On-demand streams on digital music services that are authorized by and reported to the record labels, whether paid for by the consumer through a subscription or free to the consumer through ad-supported services, will be accepted for RIAA certifications.”

Cary Sherman, Chairman & CEO of the RIAA, had this to say regarding the new decision:

“Including music streaming in Gold & Platinum awards marks the continued evolution of the industry’s premier program for recognizing artistic achievement, and it reflects the wide spectrum of ways consumers enjoy music from their favorite bands. The music business, along with its incredible array of digital service partners, is offering fans more access to music than ever before. We’re thrilled that our awards will now more fully recognize artists’ commercial success today.” Check out the list of the first batch of refreshed certifications released today.

It looks like technology is continuing  to change the music biz yet again!
