It has been a little while since I have posted anything, and I am sorry about that. I have gotten several emails and comments that all I was posting was food recall, and there are a lot of food recalls that happen so I can see where people would feel that way. And there aren't too many new things happening in the world of food, so I was hesitant to post more food recalls after the barrage of comments I have gotten. Then I got a new job (thank you Jesus) and most of the free time I had while out of work naturally ended. I wanted to take this time to ask those who follow and anyone who is reading, should I keep posting food recalls? Are they informative, or helpful? I also wanted to let you all know that Jimmy and I are trying to set a date to do the next Podcast.

Chick-fil-A

Ok, unless you have been living under a rock you have heard the CEO's of Chick-fil-A's stance on gay marriage. A few days ago people across the country flocked to Chick-fil-A, not because of the fast-food chain's chicken sandwiches, but because of its CEO's vocal support of traditional marriage. Now Gay rights activists are planning today to hold a "national same-sex kiss day" at Chick-fil-A. And now the mayor of Chicago says he is going to ban the opening of any new Chick-fil-A in his city. What are your thoughts on this whole affair? Should a Restaurant be able to voice their beliefs? Should a Mayor be able to decide to block a business? Does Chicken need all this press, good or bad? Let us know what you think.

Cold Sweet Catering.

When you start thinking about getting a catering service for that next party, you can add one more to that list. We have plenty to choose from like Subway and a plethora of Mom & Pop places, but a new comer has thrown in it's hat for a piece of the pie. Did I say Pie, I meant Ice Cream, Cold Stone Creamery has come up with a line of Mini Desserts. These mini desserts are going to try to take advantage of the small-indulgence trend. No one wants to eat a whole slice of cake, but a bite sized ice cream confection? Oh yeah there couldn't be that many calories in there. Could there?

Here are a list of some of the choices that Cold Stone is coming out with:

Oreo canapés — Oreo cookies topped with a miniature scoop of ice cream, dipped in either ganache or frosting and garnished with sprinkles or candy.
Cone-olis — Inspired by a suggestion from a franchisee who suggested piping soft ice cream into cannoli shells, these are made from miniature waffle cones filled with cheesecake ice cream, dipped in miniature chocolate chips, garnished with a stripe of non-dairy “bettercream,” and topped with a maraschino cherry.
Cake Bites — made from large sheet cakes spread with ice cream and topped with an optional layer of caramel or fudge, cut in one-inch-by-three-inch rectangles, dipped in ganache and garnished with a choice of candy.
Mini Cones — choice of ice cream in miniature waffle cones and dipped in a chocolate shell.
Cake Pops — already available in certain locations, house-made yellow, red velvet or devil’s food cake is mixed with frosting, rolled into balls, dipped in a chocolate shell and garnished with sprinkles or other candy.

Cold Stone is looking at a October 3, 2012 start date. Although prices are set by the franchisees, but the suggested retail price is $1.49 each.

Food Recall BBQ Beef, Chicken, Yams, & Cheese Dips.

Well Yesterday was a very busy day for food recalls. Three different food products showed up on the radar needing to be taken off the shelves, and out of your home.

Well lets start off with BBQ Beef Sandwiches by Spillson's LTD of Monroe, MI. They issued a voluntary recall of its 4 ounce Texas BBQ Beef sandwiches due to undeclared Soy and Wheat flour.

Next we have 79 pounds of Chicken and Yam Pie by Piccadilly Fine Foods of Santa Clara, CA. They issued the voluntary recall due to undeclared shrimp curry paste.

And Lastly we have Sartori Inspirations LLC a Colorado based company is recalling a plethora of cheese spreads and dips. This is due in part to Gills Onions of Oxnard, California recalled some of its diced yellow onions on July 18 because a sample had tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and Sartori had used some of these onions in the making of their dips and spreads. Got Rain?

With the hottest temps on record for the U.S. according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration being 2012, and the worst drought in about 50 years comes higher prices.

It kind of makes scene that prices would go up here in the U.S.. But since we export a large portion of the worlds corn, and corn is used as animal feed, process food filler, and most recently fuel. It will price increases in many different areas. The drought has effected 88% of the corn crop (see the drought footprint HERE.). Beef is expected to go up 4-5% next year and eggs, pork and dairy to go up slightly less. To see the full article please go HERE.

What? Soda makes you Fat?

Everyone knows that soda is packed with sugar, or tons of artificial sweeter. But what if you could get a soda that didn't?

Well you can't at least not yet; however the two largest soda companies Coca-Cola and Pepsi are in the hunt for a no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste drink. But they are years away from getting one, but that doesn't stop them from looking. Cheese to fight Diabetes?

I love cheese, I mean I LOVE CHEESE. I know it is a part of the dairy food group, but I think that cheese should be it's own food group. There is a reason why there is the saying "Everything is better with cheddar".

And the cheese lovers of the world now have a good reason to eat cheese. According to a research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition cheese eaters have a 12% lower risk of having diabetes. However it should be noted that obesity is the #1 cause of type 2 diabetes, and eating plates full of cheese could lead to obesity. So like in all things moderation is the key.

Food Recall Ground Beef (People reported sick)

Ok most of the recalls I bring to you are just that a recall, no one is sick most times. However this is not the case for this particular recall.

Cargill recalls almost 30,000 pounds of ground beef after salmonella outbreak sickens 33, no deaths as to date. The states that are effected so far are as follows: Hannaford Stores (MA, ME, NH, NY, RI, VA, and VT.) . Since ground beef freezes so well I recommend those who live in those areas to double check their meat. For the complete story please go HERE.

Food Recall for Cookies

This recall effects my neighbors up North in Canada. If you live in Canada and have a food allergies you may want to take a look at this one.

In Canada cookies are being recalled due to milk being in them, but not being marked on the label as such. This can be bad news for anybody with a milk allergy. To see the full list of products being recalled please go HERE.

Food Recall Columbian-Style Cheese

New recall from over the weekend, another cheese product is being recalled off of shelves.

A New York company is doing a recall for Columbian-style cheese due to improper pasteurization. The cheese products that are subject to this recall are labeled "Quesito Colombiano Colombian Cheese." For the complete story you can find it HERE.

Food Recall Frozen Meat Product.

This recall looks a lot like and earlier recall by Buona Vita and there is a good reason to why that is.

Buona Vita is recalling an additional 72,510 pounds of various frozen, ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. This is on top of the 300,000 pounds that have already been recalled. These meat products are being recalled due to a Listeria concern. To see the new list of things that are being recalled go HERE.

Food Recall Chopped Onions and Celery.

Here is another recall that has been issued for the following areas: Canada and in eight U.S. states, including California, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Diced Onions, and Diced Onions and Celery are being recalled by Gills Onions, LLC of Oxnard, CA. The recall was initiated when the FDA found Listeria in a random sampling. For more information on this recall please see the full article HERE.

Loosing the battle, no more!

Ok this post is slightly related to food, well more to the point what happens when you eat too much of it. Now I love food, all kinds of food. I like to try new things, and experiment, and that is one of the problems I have. No the pic at the beginning is not me. I would never subject you to that. Needless to say that one is better then mine.

When I was growing up in Colorado I started off as a plump baby. My mother has a picture of me sitting on a stool in a pair of brown paints and a yellow turtleneck and I was chunky. My mother says I was Solid. I say I was fat. But as I started to grow, I thinned out. Becoming, in the words of my family, a skeleton. During this time I made a statement that my mother now constantly reminds me of, that said, "I'm never going to get big like my Dad!"

Well to those naysayers I say BEWARE! I was skinny all through school and while I was in the Navy. When I got married I weighed 175 pounds, and stood 6'6" tall, like I said a toothpick. While in the Navy I got hurt, got diagnosed with Post Traumatic Headache Syndrome which went into Chronic Migraines. I had a surgery to try to help with that and now have a plate in my head.

I became less and less active during my med-board, medical discharge, and in civilian life. I kept getting jobs that had me sitting at a desk. I lost weight when I went to collage, but now my line of work has me sitting at a computer a majority of the time. That coupled with video games, eating and cooking to make a living, not to mention....ok I'll say it....I'm lazy. All of these things help contribute to me slowly putting on weight.

Now I knew I was over weight, but my doctor only said that I should try to loose some weight, so I did "Try" off and on for years. It's not like I don't know how to loose weight, the theory is simple take in less calories then you expend. Simple right? Yeah right. I have lots of "book" knowledge from collage, and personal research. I even have lots of workout equipment I have collected throughout the years. And I have I dabbled at fitness since I qualified (but never went) for the Navy SeALs (a whole different story there). Now my Cholesterol was high but is now under control with meds, so that didn't really worry me. But what got me happened today.

I weighed myself for the first time in about 2 or 3 months and I couldn't believe my eyes, so much so that I took a picture of the scale (pic below). Now you probably cant read what's on the read out too well since I used my iPhone and an app called Gorillacam but it reads 304.4 lbs. on it. I had been feeling a little down before I weighed myself, and this didn't help. But while I was trolling the internet for news to put on this sight I realized that all the things I keep telling my son, now more then ever, pertained to me: "You got your self into this now get yourself out", "Only you can do something about it.", and "Put the fork down!". Ok that last one isn't one I said to my son, just thought about with other people, but it still applies to me.

Read out is 304.4

All of this to say this I WILL GET BACK INTO SHAPE AND STAY THAT WAY!!! That being said no this sight will not go all healthy. Yes I will do some more "healthier" recipes but I will put those good tasting not so good for you ones on as well. I'm going to put a page on the sight recording my progress and journey. Governmental screening produce program gets a reprieve.

With the rash of recalls (9 so far this month) the U.S. has decided to give a five month reprieve to a produce screening program being conducted by the USDA.

The Program may have gotten a reprieve but the USDA does not think that the program falls into their true mission. The program has been going on now for 11 years. find the full article HERE. Leave a comment below on if you think that the program should or shouldn't be continued.

Get ready to pay more...

Ok the article has almost nothing to do with food. But I found it interesting and pertinent to my life, and I think many of you will as well. I assume that we all like money, but if you order on line prepair to spend a little more if you live in the U.S.A. like I do.

Up to now in the U.S. we have been able to order things on line and not have to pay sales Tax. Many "real" shops have said that this is unfair since they can't compete against online stores. Well Online shoppers may have to start paying about 5% more for the things that they purchase online. Republicans and Democrats are starting to unite on the idea of a new online sales tax. Opinions on this subject has shifted since both parties are now looking for new areas of revenue. The full story is HERE. But if you, like me, enjoy not paying sales tax on those online purchases and live in the U.S. contact your Congressman and let them know how you feel.

A Sweet Combination

I try to find recipes, articles and information that I think you guys would like to see. Or I try to keep you safe from bad food. But I got this excellent Pic sent to me by Christopher McCauley, who found it at the Reese's home page on Facebook.

It looks like they have taken regular cookie dough and put it into a square muffin pan and then put a Reese's cup on top. Personally I think it is genius. Going to have to try this out soon...and gain another 5 pounds...

Food Recall Corn Chowder

We have another Food recall people and unfortunately it is soup this time. I absolutely love soup I have it at least once a week, however...

Before you open a can of corn chowder check the can and this sight to make sure you don't get a surprise like two other people did. Cans of Hill Country Fare, Wegman's, Chef's Cupboard, and America's Choice Chicken Corn Chowder are being recalled when two people found pieces of marker pen in it.

An Old Mouse Gets A Face Lift

When I was in collage for business I learned that most companies try to revamp themselves every 3 years, kind of a face lift in a way. Now they don change their products per-say but they definitely change the packaging.

I was a a kid when Chuck E. Cheese came to my home town in Aurora, Co. and the original place is still there but not a Chuck E.Cheese, but a Souper!Salad! ever since there was a shooting there. But it was around that time that Chuck E. got his first make over. I can remember when Chuck E. wore a bow tie and a vest, had an animatronic band, and some of the best Arcade games outside of the Arcades. Then he went to the Hip skateboarder that we love today, and now Chuck E. Cheese have announced that he is going to give him a new up grade. So with out further ado Heeeeeeeeres Chuck E. There is a recall for Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) for possible Salmonella contamination. GOS is a "highly pure food grade powder derived from milk lactose" with uses including being an ingredient in dietary supplements for kids. What is the Secret Sauce?!?!?

I don't know about you but a good mystery intrigues me. There are some great mysteries that come to mind. Was there a second shooter for Kennedy, Chupacabra, Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, and McDonald's secret sauce. Well at least one of these have been finally answered....

The McDonald's secret sauce for their Big Mac is no longer a mystery. McDonald's released a video on what is truly in their secret sauce. Now there have been close facsimiles out there, but this one comes from the head chef at McDonald's. Now if I can just get Bigfoot's address.

Food Recall Peppermint Bon Bon Ice Cream

Here's another food recall. This time the product is various Peppermint Bon Bon Ice Cream. With the hot summer months here, and if this is your flavor...

Make sure that you check your 1/2 pints. The A North Dakota-based company is recalling half-gallon and quart containers of peppermint bon bon and peppermint bon bon light ice cream because they may contain eggs not listed as an ingredient.
