First Knitting Success

I am showing off my very first successful knitting project. I have been practicing how to knit for months now and voila! Made my very first head warmer, headband, head protector, head gear, etc... You can call it any names but I really love my creation!

I bought the imported yarn in SM City, Cebu where they featured their sale items and loved the thick yarn which made it easier for me to knit than thin yarns.

Anyway, I hope you'll also love it especially the color combination. I plan to make more if I can get hold of more sale items from the craft shop.

LAST DECEMBER 5, 2011, GOODIE BOX CRAFTS CONDUCTED THE BASIC POLYMER CLAY CRAFT WORKSHOP AT LITTLE ME SCHOOL LOCATED AT KAUSWAGAN HIGHWAY IN FRONT KONG HUA SCHOOL. PARTICIPATED BY ALMOST 200 STUDENTS, WE ENJOYED CREATING STUFFS WITH THESE LITTLE KIDS WHO WERE VERY OUTSPOKEN AND NEVER AFRAID TO EXPRESS HOW THEY FEEL. IT WAS ANOTHER HAPPY DAY FOR US TO MEET THESE KIDS AND WE ALWAYS LOVE TO SEE THEIR ELATION ONCE THEY SEE THEIR FINISHED NAME TAGS, KEY CHAINS, CELLPHONE TAGS, REF MAGNETS, AND EARRINGS THAT THEY MADE. DESPITE THE KIDS OVERCROWDING THE OVEN TOASTERS, IMPATIENT TO WAIT FOR THEIR STUFFS, EVERYTHING WAS WORTH IT. THANKS KIDS FOR BRINGING US JOY AND FOR THE 'ENGLISH SPEAKING PROWESS' THAT WE NEED TO HAVE IN ORDER TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM :) WE WOULD LOVE TO COME BACK AGAIN NEXT SCHOOL YEAR!!

MARYMOUNT ACADEMY WORKSHOP

Last November 11, 2011, Goodie Box Crafts conducted a BASIC POLYMER CLAY CRAFT WORKSHOP at MARYMOUNT ACADEMY - a private school in Balulang, Cagayan de Oro City. It was a fun moment with the kids and you bet, teachers enjoyed creating and molding stuffs as well. Pre-schoolers were able to make name tags for themselves and can't hide the delight, as well as excitement in their faces. Thanks to their Principal Ms Kay Lasque (my Sis in Law) for the wonderful time we had there. High school students weren't last in creating characters, shapes, and varied stuffs that really awed the teachers. Feedback from this workshop was at height and bottom line, we drew happiness from everybody, not mentioning the parents who never imagined their kids were able to create such lovely and colorful works of art.

Goodie Box Crafts and Accessories participated in the Davao Trade Expo 2011 held at the Kadayawan Hall beside NCCC Mall of Davao City last October 21, 22, and 23, 2011. The 3-day event was supported by the business community of Davao City as well as the city government where Mayor Duterte joined the opening of the said expo.

I gained a lot of friends who were my neighbors participating in the exhibit and another new experience for me, lessons to learn from visual merchandising to dealing business with other buyers, suppliers, and walk-in customers.

MINDANAO ONE 2011

Goodie Box Crafts & Accessories joins "Mindanao One." This is a trade expo showcasing Mindanao Island's Abundance. October 14- 17, 2011 at the World Trade Center, Metro Manila, Philippines. Feedback? Well, it's our 3rd day and yet, buyers and walk-ins are very minimal (literally, minimal). This will be an unforgettable first time out of town exhibitor experience for me. The World Trade Center here in the Philippines has been well known for its ability to create opportunities for entrepreneurs to flourish and build business partnerships. For now, I don't see any opportunity for me. A lot of exhibitors here are grumbling for this reason and now questioning the organizer's capacity to market such trade expo. In fairness to the Mindanao Trade Expo Foundation, Inc - the organizers of this event - it takes a whole bunch of funds just to rent the place, logistics, preparations, paper works, and all of the itsy-bitsy details to successfully put up such big event. In the exhibitors' perspective though, we ( and not just me) felt that buyers were not informed and less media mileage perhaps is also one of the reason. My supplier/friend even told me that traffic jam occurs outside the venue during exhibits like this, but not this time. Exhibitors were buying from co-exhibitors and never expected an event which is supposed to be Big and an opportunity for Mindanao to showcase their bounty. Some exhibitors had their fair sale during the opening but felt that it wasn't enough. Opening days should even leave out 50% of the stocks that they brought, leaving the rest of the 50% to sell in the next 3 days. Time, effort, and money should always occur in the minds of the organizers because if they say it's not easy for them, so much more for exhibitors. This might not be our last but another lesson learned: ALWAYS CHECK THE BACKGROUND OR PREVIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE ORGANIZERS BEFORE HITTING EVEN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES. We are just trying to enjoy our stay here in Manila, but at the back of our entrepreneurial minds, we are so sad and sorry for the organizers for their upcoming evaluation sheets that exhibitors will paint as "X"

Polymer Clay Craft Workshop for Medina, Misamis Oriental

Last July 28, 29, and 30, 2011, I conducted the Basic Polymer Clay Craft and Livelihood Workshop on Souvenir Item Making in Medina, Misamis Oriental.

In partnership with the Department of Trade & Industry - Misamis Oriental and the Local Government Unit Tourism of the Municipality of Medina, the workshop was a success and a very humbling experience for me.

Medina is one of the municipalities of Misamis Oriental famous for Duka Bay Resort. I have been to Duka Bay many times but never toured around the place. Me and my cousin Louie were never familiar with the place.

I was so excited to conduct the workshop to another group of people and for sure, will be added up in my bff (best friends forever) list. This is what I love about my job, meeting new friends.

We were welcomed by no other than Ms Mylene Huerto, the very active LGU Tourism Officer of Medina and her staff. They were so warm and accommodating.

Before conducting our day 1 workshop, we also had a courtesy call with Mayor Pupos. He was very encouraging and supportive of the workshop, but emphasized on its future and long term aspects. I noted his point and just thankful enough that he spared some time to welcome us and show support.

Overall, I am so happy to have conducted this workshop and even shared ways on how to promote their Municipality through their creations, and encouraged them to always strive for quality.

Me and my family fell in love with the place that's very rich in natural resources.

Thanks to Judy Aclan from DTI Misamis Oriental who has been instrumental in organizing such livelihood opportunities and has been very proactive when it comes to supporting recipients in every municipality under her jurisdiction (or beyond?).

I know that the Medinanions will have a future in this new business that they are creating and it's not just about making money, but also molding the community to share their talents, skills, and capabilities regardless of education and social status.

As long as they have joined, and participated by heart during the workshop, for sure, they will be successful. Good Luck to you all and I pray for your success!!!

POLYMER CLAY CRAFT LIVELIHOOD WORKSHOP

The Municipality of Medina is conducting a livelihood workshop entitled: “Polymer Clay Craft & Livelihood Workshop for Souvenir Item Making” on July 28, 29, 30, 2011 at Pelaez Ancestral House, Medina, Misamis Oriental.

With the strong effor...ts of our LGU Tourism headed by our Tourism Officer, Mylene P. Huerto in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry Misamis Oriental, this 3-day activity will pave the way for providing livelihood to the people of Medina.

Participants will be taught how to create souvenir items out of polymer clay, incorporating our own rich indigenous materials found in our municipality. These unique creations will proudly reflect the true beauty and bounty of Medina which is just one of the steps in strengthening Medina’s promotion on the Eco-tourism industry.

Lessons I've learned as a Trade Exhibitor during the ALPHA PHI OMEGA BIENNIAL CONVENTION 2011

Last May 26 - 29, 2011 was the Alpha Phi Omega Biennial Convention which was held here in our City of Golden Friendship, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

Goodie Box Crafts & Accessories had a table top exhibit and I really thought it was not a good decision for me to join their exhibit. The first day gave us very little sales and prayed that it will be the opposite in the next three more days to come.

Well, the Lord heard us and strategized a bit to achieve breakeven or even at least an income at that. I was happy of the outcome and learned so many things along the way. Joining trade exhibits also has its ups and downs and this was our second test run in joining trade exhibits in a convention.

Lessons I have learned:
1. Know the people who will be attending the convention - APO community were mostly men but in the last 2 days of the convention, young women and APO moms increased in number. Still, dominated the convention as we see it.
2. Know what other exhibitors are selling.
3. Attend exhibitor's briefing so that your needs will be met like electricity in the venue since I am using an oven toaster.
4. Proper location in the trade exhibit venue - 'location, location, location' still applies here, just like having your own shop somewhere, where there should be high magnitude of traffic so that your products will be seen.
5. Proper lighting - our location was okay, but had really poor lighting. We were selling small accessories, so we brought lamps with us in the 2nd day of the exhibit. It did work. Yellow lamp of my tita was effective in drawing more customers.
6. Manpower is also crucial - to accommodate customers with a convention that is attended by more or less 5,000 delegates.
7. Not just sit and wait but call out to customers.
8. Fraternity/Sorority convention delegates loves to buy #1-souvenir shirts, #2-souvenir items like mugs, button pins, key chains, ref magnets, stickers, and anything that has their seal, coat of arms in it.
9. Keep watch of undisciplined, not so good, abusive customers.
10. Smile though your heart is aching :)

RED RIBBON BAKESHOP LIVELIHOOD WORKSHOP

Did another workshop to regular employees of Red Ribbon Bakeshop here in Cagayan de Oro City.

At first, I felt that they weren't that interested since I understand the company is paying for their workshop. It was challenging for me since these are busy workers and maybe - at the back of my mind - had no time for doing crafts like me, but I know that there are creative minds among this flock.

When we started holding the clays, their faces looked different. They became curious and in awe of what they were holding, molding, and stretching.

And when they made their first pieces, I was so glad their mood started to change. They were starting to enjoy what they were doing. This was really very different from the usual day-to-day, "routinary" job that they had. I think this also served as a "destressor" for them.

Just so relieved that at the end of the workshop, they were so happy with their work and loved what they did. The very important indicator for the success of my workshop are those happy faces.

Just when we got back from our Holy Week vacation in Maramag, Bukidnon (which will be another blog to share) Ms Mylene Sison of ABSCBN texted and asked me to be their guest in Pamahaw Espesyal - local early morning program of Cagayan de Oro City.

Who would say no to this opportunity? So I agreed and asked if I could bring my students. Well, she said that I could bring them on Wednesday, which means a separate shoot for my students (yipee!).

Maia wasn't able to sleep properly and I was busy preparing my stuff since I just got the text message the afternoon before the shoot.

All went well and was thankful for the opportunity.

On Wednesday, I was more excited since my students will be featured and they were very excited as well. I forgot our camera charger in Maramag, Bukidnon so I had to ask my aunt and cousin to take our photos. Well, they just have the coolest gadget ever...so I was thankful again that they made their best effort to wake up (hahaa) very early in the morning....thanks Ta Kats and Ryuji...:)

Well you think it's just twice in Pamahaw Espesyal, one in TV Patrol Northern Mindanao? Sit back and relax....hahah! We just did our shoot for MagTV which will be aired on May 15. It is a mother's day special but due to Manny Pacquiao's fight, it was moved.

I am just so happy that my students who joined the workshop enjoyed making stuffs again during the shoot. What a blessing!!!!

Thanks to the MagTV crew...they are so nice...we really enjoyed doing the shoot and experienced how the pros do it. My apologies for the small space that we have....

I miss jotting something down here on my blog. I have been very busy with so many things. We just finished our long time dream which was the RUN FOR THE HEART and it was very successful. I hope this will be an annual event so we can have more beneficiaries.

We had 700 registrants and at least 500 showed up due to the rain. Well, this is just the start of a big event. The bigger it is, the more indigent kids with heart problems will benefit from it.

JOURNAL PROJECT

Had fun creating this very first journal project of mine. I didn't realize that I had lots of old letters and cards, and a lot of stuff that were hard for me to let go of.

Found letters stacked as late as in my high school and college years. They were so fun to include in my journal since it was so nice to reminisce the moment I had with each individual, special in my heart.

Lesson learned from this activity? A LOT OF PEOPLE LOVES ME....yehey!!!

I thought at first it was "just" journaling or making art, but in the end, I realized I was laughing at myself, reminiscing happy moments from the past, and it made me feel good. Now I know how journal enthusiasts are passionate about this art. Kudos! to them. This is yet my first and am not even done with what to do with its cover page.

MINIATURE BEETLE CAR OUT OF POLYMER CLAY

Thank God I was able to retrieve these pictures from my phone since I did not have a microsd card reader. Thanks to my cousin here in Cebu City, Philippines because he gave me his extra card which he is not using anymore.

I made this last December 2010, ordered by a student from Xavier High School. She said she will be giving it to her classmate. I enjoyed making it and was another challenge for me to create this stuff since I am only used to creating girly stuffs. I was very happy to mold this red miniature beetle and would love to create one for myself...well of course, purple miniature beetle is my preference...
