TUE: N winds 15 to 20 kt, diminishing to 10 to 15 kt in the afternoon. Gusts up to 25 kt. Seas 3 to 4 ft. Wave Detail: NW 4 ft at 5 seconds.

Staging Winter — pat morss

It’s still mid-autumn, but nature is setting up for winter.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac says a Woolly Bear Caterpillar’s wide brown stripe means a mild winter. Anne-Lise prefers Norwegian Folklore, where a wide stripe means a snowy winter.

There are still a few weekend fishermen working the rocks.

A new Great Blue Heron on a short stay in our tree, headed south (fuzzy-photo through Plexiglas).

This less frequent juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk may elect to stick around for the winter.

Late blooming flowers like the New England Aster are supporting the insect population. Seeds in the center are disappearing.

Seeds are also disappearing at different rates from the Montauk Daisies.

Mother Nature is setting the table for our wintering birds. These look like Winterberries.

An app identifies these as invasive Porcelain Berries.

Overpopulated invasive Oriental Bittersweet, contributing to the fall colors.

A Maple leaf desperately hanging on.

We can always count on colorful Cape Ann sunsets in the fall.

Hiraeth: A New Series of Works by Ryan Davis — Opening Reception November 5 at Grand Banks

Local artist Ryan Davis has a new series of works called “Hiraeth” — a Welsh word describing a deep melancholic longing for home, an era, or a place that is irrevocably lost, or perhaps never truly was.

The new series is inspired by the place Ryan calls home, and the memories, landscapes, and sense of belonging that shape it.

Join Grand Banks for the opening reception on Thursday, November 5, from 6 to 8 PM at Grand Banks Building Products, 7 Crafts Road, Gloucester. This is an RSVP event — light food and refreshments will be served.
