I work part time at a supermarket. I work in service, but most of the time I man the self-service area and help people when they have problems with the machines. This job requires a lot of standing around and very little talking or activity, which to some might sound like an easy way to earn money, but to me, I am usually bored out of my mind. I like to be busy and I like having conversations with customers. One way I pass the time is to try to find shopping lists. I started collecting them to illustrate them. One of the door men at work collects them for me when I'm not there. Lists are often left in baskets or amongst groceries on the shelves. This is my small collection. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with them in the end, but I can't stop picking them up.

I love the variety of handwriting styles and papers, and the aggressive crossing out marks.
If you have some old shopping lists you feel like sending to me I'll send you back an appreciative handmade postcard :)

Ps. I hope I didn't sound like I was whinging about my job - I don't hate it and I know I'm lucky to have one!

I am bad at being a Tasmanian. I thought having one Tasmanian Winter under my belt, I would be prepared for the next, but I am freeeeeeezing all the time. C and I went to Kmart after work a few nights ago to get some totally-unfashionable-but-warm-Wintery-around-the-house kind of clothes. I bought this Italian wool blazer at an opshop this week. I actually picked it out for C to try on, but I am ridiculously bad at telling the size of an item by looking at it, it was probably five sizes too small for him, but lucky me! Ten bucks! It has a really nice taper around the waist when it is closed. The lovely detachable collar pictured was a sweet gift from C last year that I wear all the time but seem to have never shown it here.

Ps. Does anyone else loathe shoulder pads? It's probably because my shoulders are broad enough without padding. I don't want to damage the lining of the blazer to get these ones out, but I just hate them so much!

I thought I'd share some images of work from my Photomedia class from the past semester. Our subject for the class was Art and Site, and we were asked to essentially pick one theme or idea to carry out for the entire semester and build upon then refine the idea. I wanted to work around the idea of bicycle as site and the simple joy, curiosity and ritual of the bicycle ride. There were 4 different stages to the work and I thought I'd share the 3 so far. Part 1 is probably my favourite.

Pt. 1: Exploring Launceston by bicycle. Going off the beaten track.
The third and final part of the project is currently still under construction and almost entirely different from the stuff above. I will likely share it when it all comes together. It's been fun just playing around in this subject - I've really loved seeing what my classmates are doing each week.

5 Reasons Why James Spader is Awesome by Kailey
+ Whether he was in a movie that was serious (Cronenberg's Crash, Secretary, Sex, Lies, and Videotape) or frivolous (Pretty in Pink, Tuff Turf), Spader proved he could do them both.
+ His face (yes this is a reason).
+ His clothing choices were always on point (see: this outfit).
+ His hair is actually perfect.
+ From calling Andie a bitch in Pretty in Pink to stealing Diane Keaton's job in Baby Boom, Spader became the go-to-guy when you needed a rich jerk in the 80s - whilst still managing to look angelic in the process.

While on my two-week self imposed uni work break my in-laws took C and I on a Sunday drive to the Evandale Markets. They're my favourite markets in the area. The outdoor part of the markets can be a little bit hit or miss, but there is a huge hall and inside are a bunch of permanent stalls selling vintage antique type goods. I always walk away with just a couple of things because I always get overwhelmed by all the things and the crowds. I went there with hopes of finding a nice new teapot. I picked up some 1950s Ladies Home Journal magazines, a tablecloth, 8 pretty handkerchiefs with which to make bunting, a hair bow, a big doily and a lovely old J.H. Lynch 'The Water Nymph' print. I've always loved the print and have seen them in cafes and online and picked this one up for $20, a tenth of the price eBayers advertise them at. I'm a lucky girl! I'd love to find a full-colour print of it too. I would have stayed longer at the markets, but C's parents were ready to head home. I would go out there every weekend if I could!
The hold-in-your-hands paper sort and also the e-variety. I thought I'd share a couple of my favourite e-zines. I'd love to make a one-off e-zine sometime!

I have been a bit obsessed with ezines ever since Neet launched back when I was in mid high school. I used to follow Stephanie J's blog and adored seeing her lovely little lovechild blossom into a well known and well loved publication. Neet is a quarterly magazine showcasing "grassroots creativity". Lots of lovely fashion and art spreads and great writing.
Dashing is a sweet inspiration, style & craft publication started by three ladies with varied creative backgrounds. It is a visual feast. I want to live in this magazine!
Diana started Gadchick not long ago to help fill the void that tech sites leave in terms of appealing to and catering for women. It has a great accompanying blog and app.
Smitten is calls itself "The Lookbook of Wedding Fancy". It's full of beautiful visuals.
Cellardoor is a UK quarterly quirky art, style, culture and beauty magazine. It's good for a read as well as the pretty the visuals.

Styled is really beautiful. It is about the "art of merrymaking" and it's full of celebration inspiration.

Some other favourites:
Cake
Racing Minds
Utterly Engaged
Era
Pistachio

Do you have any favourites to share? Have you made an e-zine before?
Ps. I'm finishing up a big assignment today, then I should be back for good!

Uni has reached the point in semester where I pretty much can't spend my time doing much else for the next two weeks. Six assignments in two weeks? What a breeze! I'd like to just fast forward through time to later this month so I don't have to experience the assignment turmoil! The internet is an easy distraction especially when I have to do a lot of online research so I'm giving myself a two week blog break. After the assignment-fest I've got a couple of free weeks before I head home to Newcastle for a fortnight of well-deserved holiday to see my friends and family. I'm determined to get out of the next two weeks unscathed, with no time extensions and no last-minute hand ins. See you on the other side!

Psssst... If you'd like to contribute a list for me to put up on my blog while I'm in assignment hibernation feel free to email me: bianca [at] goodnightlittlespoon.com. A list of favourite things, a list of things to do, a list of craft projects, a list of lists - anything that pleases you :)
Remember way back in September when I posted my photos from Rhianne's It's a Photoswap? Well, I sent my roll of film off to Michelle and she sent me hers. After a bit of a long-winded fiasco with the company that my workplace gets to develop film going bankrupt, then them losing my the roll of film for several months, I finally got it back and had it developed. It was rather exciting to look at these lovely images taken by somebody I've never met in places I've never been. Here are a couple of my favourites from the set - all credit to Michelle Kuek.
+ unknown

+ I'm obsessed with pies at the moment. I want to make sweet potato & buttermilk, blackberry icecream pie and lattice topped peach.
+ When I finally get around to learning how to crochet, these gorgeous coasters will be high on my list.
+ Katyha made this very pretty and very wise graphic.
+ I saw this months ago, but felt like reposting it - it's Nothing But Bonfires' 60 Years of Memories letters for her father's birthday. So lovely.

These are some photos from my latest roll of film from my Diana Mini. I had some problems with the film jamming part way through the roll, so there were probably only about thirty shots on the roll (for a roll of film that usually takes more than double that) and most of them were very blurry. Nothing compares to my first ever roll in my Diana. Even still, there were a couple of shots I really liked. The photos are from as far back as last July when I went home to Newcastle and also a bunch of shots from a trip to the tulip farm.

I've found a new place to send film off to called Extrafilm - it's much cheaper than in any shops around here (um, $25 a roll? Nu-uh). For any Australians - I really recommend them. They sent me a bunch of free stuff and coupons for my next order.
These are my new favourite shoes. I bought them for a special occasion and have been very bad at not wearing them until the special occasion. They have a cute little heel on the back and are rather comfy. I am thinking I'll have to buy another pair for myself because I'm sure I'm going to scuff these ones up beforehand. I rarely go without stockings, but today is a lovely sunny Autumn day and C and I are going for a bike ride out to the main university campus to do essay research. I conveniently angled my legs so that you can't see my gigantic bicycle bruises. I've had one giant one on the side of my leg for about two weeks from my bike falling on me and I'm watching it turn all different colours. I'm sure any bicycling ladies out there can relate. My legs are always so knocked about, bruises and scrapes and dents. But all worth it for the love of riding.

+ belt: thrifted

Ps. Apologies for my constant squinting.

This week I chose the idea: Work with a medium that is subtractive.
I don't share much of the work I make at art school on my blog but this week I've been using the subtractive medium of paper cutting. I have been making paper cut silhouettes for my Drawing The Body class. 40% of our assessment for this class for the semester is a self directed project pertaining to the body. I wanted to do something I'd never done before so I chose silhouettes - it was something I always thought would be too challenging but after having a play around (first drawing them on paper, then moving to my computer), I found a method I found easy (albeit a little time consuming). I draw the silhouettes with my graphics tablet and Photoshop, based on photographs I've taken, then print and cut them out with a craft knife. I wanted to try to subvert the genre of silhouettes and make some body silhouettes of things that might make you look twice - perhaps a little weird or a little controversial. It is interesting that so much information and meaning can be conveyed through just a little body language. I aim to make at least ten of these silhouettes and photograph them against different contrasting backdrops (eg. pages from magazines, outside). I'm also going to make a set that will be placed on oval shaped pieces of cardboard with collaged backgrounds. I'm having a lot of fun with it as you can probably tell. By the way - I'm all for suggestions of different body silhouettes to make!

If you can't already tell, one of my favourite artists is Kara Walker.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."
Christine from Flapper Girl was so kind to send me one of her lovely lady ties. I am going opshopping this afternoon in pursuit of more collared shirts and dresses to wear this tie with - I want to wear it every day! I have a habit of teaming colours together that shouldn't really work. In theory aqua and red sounds like a hideous combination, but I think I'm okay with it. Also, stockings and sandals - is that totally uncool? Oh well.

+ I did some doodling (uniball eye micros are my all time favourite pens).

+ We made quite a few visits to Milkbar.

+ Our friend Chris came to stay for a few days (that's his silhouette).

+ I sent some mail.

+ I reorganised my office space a little.

+ I got through a few more 100 ideas.

+ I found this lovely skirt and painted my nails probably a dozen times.

+ My coffee table got a new tablecloth.

+ I unearthed all of my badges and brooches and pins.

+ I went opshopping and came home with these guys.

+ I got bored at uni and took photos of my books and feet and paint pallet.

+ One of my neighbours houses got re-painted with this lovely red door.

+ Dexter was very photogenic. We also discovered that our little boy cat... is actually a girl. Dexter is a lady. Ps. Yes, her collar is too big - I've got to find her a new one until she fits this one.

+ C and I treated ourselves to a couple of cafe outings.

Watching: Game of Thrones, Angel, New Girl.
Reading: The Hunger Games.
Listening: Daughter, Miike Snow & Foster The People.
Consuming: A lot of tea, red velvet cupcakes, soups and cider (I actually found a type of alcohol that I don't hate! It's the only cider I've ever tried that I've liked - it's called Herrljunga, delicious sweet pear)
Loving: Having visitors, day trips, craft supplies, my lovely boyfriend and our little cat family.
Wearing: Bed socks, a lot of yellow, tights, stripes, jackets.
Spending money on: the official part of getting married (not too far away).

This week I chose the idea: list 100 uses for a tin can. When I first saw this idea, it didn't really strike me as being hugely interesting, but as I thought more about it, the tin can is such a ridiculously useful, versatile object. I thought 100 ideas was a bit ambitious, so I settled for 25. Have any to add to the list?

1. wrap with twine and use as a vase for flowers
2. hammer in tiny holes and put a tea light inside to make a little lamp
3. make tin can cakes
5. turn a can into a pin hole camera
6. tie string to two cans and make stilts
7. stack them up like bowling pins and knock them over with a ball
8. decorate and fill with sand and use as bookends
10. use as a money tin
11. fill with rice and shake to make music
C and I stopped at Nanna's yesterday before my drawing class for afternoon tea (see above). I spotted this skirt in the window and thought it was beautiful and one of a kind. I love a good swishy skirt. The shoes don't really go with the rest of the outfit, but most of my shoes are red. Today I'm feeling a bit rough (aches and pains), but I'd like to go to Spotlight to buy some fabric and fun craft supplies before work. They've sent me a ridiculous amount of coupons lately - I've still got a $10 off coupon from my birthday. I keep adding DIY projects to my Pinterest, but never attempting any!
This has been my easy uniform lately. I didn't pay more than $10 for any of the items in this outfit except my shoes. Not a bit of vintage, most things from department stores. I was standing in some fairly substantial rain at the time. C had an umbrella over the camera. I like easy outfits, something you know that works that you can just throw on.

Tonight I'm thinking about going to see The Hunger Games again and making a laksa. I always feel like laksas in wet weather. Tomorrow is a public holiday and I'm going to veg around at home making and watching stuff.
