It is good for the people seeking counselling to know that their counselor has been put through a lot of regulatory requirements and it also helps in maintaining quality in the profession.

Every field had new developments and improvements happening and counselling is no different. I think it is a good thing that the regulations for certification are being upgraded with newer developments.

Yay! It's about time that world groups stood up and took notice of the horrible ways that women are treated in other countries and are stepping in to voice their concerns about these issues.

My own mother never fully recovered after having her stroke. She lost the use of the right side of her body along with her speech capabilities. She never could make up her mind to fight for any of that again even though she went through intensive therapy afterwards. Once she saw how reduced she was she never was able to feel whole again and I know that brought her death on sooner than it had to have been.

seems to me that anytime there is natural disaster like this WHO would get involved and be concerned for the citizens who are affected as well as the aid workers that they are sending there and that are there with other organizations. It has to be so sad seeing this kind of devastation day in and day out- it is likely in cases like this all over the world that you would naturally see an increase in mental health issues in regions that have been hit hard by events over which they have absolutely no control. It is times like that that many of us seem to feel the most helpless and vulnerable.

I know that there are sometimes people who will moan and groan when they have to go back and get more certification to do their jobs, but I would think that well qualified counselors would be the least likely to bellyache about these sorts of things. The good ones know that upping these requirements are doing good for both them and their patients, and I am happy that there are states out there leading the way to make sure that health care is fair and equitable for everyone.

WHO should be finding out more about the mental state of Katrina victims too. One of my neighbors was in that and was relocated here. He's had no medical help at all for the mental trauma because he has no money to buy insurance. The money he did get to relocate all went on the move and essentials for his new home. This is a small, frail elderly man that four years on can't talk about that hurricane without trembling and stuttering.

Women are the nurturers and caretakers. They can see a fragmented family looming when they are not capable of fulfilling that role. We know that most guys just aren't up to the job. A stroke takes that away from us. We need to know we still matter even when we're not 100% healthy. My aunt had a bad one and her biggest concern was the family would drift apart without her there to organize get-togethers. That's how selfless she was.

The UK has the added blessing, or complication perhaps depending on your point of view, of the National Health Service where healthcare, including the ambulance service, is free for all from the cradle to the grave.

The fear of cost doesn't prevent anyone from calling an ambulance, whether their issue is a mental health or a physical one. My ex sister in law was a nurse in the UK and the waiting rooms in emergency were often overflowing with mental health cases that really were not true emergencies and could have been attended to by their own doctor. However UK patients are so used to have free healthcare at their fingertips that some use (abuse really) the ER instead of making an appointment with their GP.

She had one older lady that she could set her watch by that would arrive in the ER every Saturday night. She always feigned one illness or another to get her ambulance ride. Her true problem was depression and there was nothing they could do for her there that wasn't already being done by her own GP. All she wanted was to chat and the hospital couldn't turn her away yet she treated an ambulance like a taxi service.

Now compare that to a man who's dying of a heart attack that's been rushed in. Or imagine he's dying on his living room floor because that lady called an ambulance and there's none available for him yet. Who deserves to be attended to first and is the true life or death case that should be coming through ER doors? The man does of course. It's no wonder the medical staff get frustrated and push such cases as that lady to the back of the queue.

Situations are not always black and white.

Women -- and I'm including both those that work in and outside the home here -- are the glue that holds families together. No wonder they suffer depression after a stroke more than men. They know how important their role is. And before any men argue with me, tell me when was the last time you organized and cooked Thanksgiving dinner, did the Christmas shopping from making the list down to the last Christmas card and bow, sent a birthday card or attended a Parents Night or school function.

PTSD is also a gigantic problem for returning troops and not just from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Vietnam vets are not to be forgotten. No stone should be left unturned in finding improved treatment options. It's good to see scientists are continuing to research this.

If nothing else it would break the cycle of eating because you're depressed about how you look, getting more depressed the heavier you get, and eating more again. Healthy lifestyle sounds much better than dieting. In my mind dieting = deprivation.

<i>"When the noise is unexpected, the brain's response is larger," said UAB psychologist David Knight, Ph.D., principal investigator on the study, which is currently in press online and will appear in the January 2010 issue of the journal NeuroImage. "But when participants are able to predict when they are going to hear the unpleasant static noise, you can see the regions of the brain quiet down so that a smaller emotional response is produced. </i>

When you know something is coming, you don't react nearly as badly. It's like waiting for a balloon to burst when the dog's playing with it. You'll still jump, but not as much if you saw the dog beforehand.

Maybe it has to do with women being more emotional of the two sexes...? Maybe they are not too well-equipped to take the fact of unhealthiness into their stride and move on...? Whatever it is, women do need to learn to cope with difficult situations before it takes a further toll on their health and the family can play a very important role in this.

It must be so difficult to see the people you have known all your life just get washed away and dead... to see your home and neighborhood just submerged without any hope for restoration...
