Who wrote this incendiary paragraph? Che Guevara's alter ego, perhaps — or maybe the ghost of Karl Marx? Nope — one of the authors was William Cohan, a former MD at JP Morgan and eminent financial observer, in the op-ed page of the NYT. It echoes my recent posts on "unnovation," where I used the Hummer as an example.

So if a snot-nosed kid like me and an eminence grise like Cohan both agree on the need for a better kind of capitalism — why are we making little progress towards building it?

I've thought long and hard for the last three to four years about a better kind of capitalism. Lately, my lab has been holding workshops about Capitalism 2.0 for blue-chip corporates, top-tier investors, radical innovators, and major international organizations alike. Here's what we've been discussing.

We can't build a better tomorrow unless we understand the root causes of today's crisis.
So much for green shoots. The unintended consequence of bailouts by the dozen is that bond markets are beginning to revolt. As yields get pushed up, all the quantitative easing in the world won't be able to put the economy back together again. Growth is — yet again — being thwarted.

Why this failure in solutions? Regulators and bankers seem stuck, endlessly debating the root cause of today's ongoing crisis. Is it a liquidity crisis, a solvency crisis, a crisis of trust? It is all of the above — yet, at root, none of the above. The real crisis is deeper, and more foundational.

Capitalism 1.0 wasn't built to last.
Today's crisis is one of institutions. That's institution not as in "organization," but institution as in rule to follow, or, better yet, ideal to strive for. The institutions, or ideals, at the heart of Capitalism 1.0 — exploitation, tyranny, domination, war, to name a few — are great if the economy's goal is to create the illusion of profit (hi, Wall Street). But they are toxic and self-destructive if its goal is to make people better off. Capitalism 1.0 is best at creating "thin" value — brittle, often illusory, and ultimately unsustainable value.

A new generation of revolutionaries is building a better kind of capitalism from the ground up: Constructive Capitalism.
Constructive capitalism is "better" in a tightly defined economic sense. It redefines the value equation at the heart of capitalism. It is built on a better economics that creates "thicker" value: value that's meaningful to humans — not just value that pumps up spreadsheets, computer models, and bonsues.

Like yesterday's revolutionaries ignited an industrial revolution, so today's revolutionaries are igniting an institutional revolution.
Today's revolutionaries have all discovered that in the 21st Century, innovation itself needs innovation. Today's most radical innovations aren't product, process, or even business model innovations: they are institutional innovations.

The last people to know about a revolution are usually the overthrown.
The institutional happening is hiding in plain sight: its happening right under your nose. Who are these new revolutionaries? Some of these are classic radical innovators: asymmetrical competitors like Threadless, Apple, and Google. But many of them are the unlikeliest of revolutionaries: Wal-Mart, Nike, and Starbucks, to name just a few. Yet, all have one thing in common: they are working away quietly, patiently, yet disruptively: to reconceive a better kind of economics from the ground up.

Strategy 2.0 is about learning to play by the rules of "Constructive Capitalism." Want to master 21st Century economics? Then ask yourself: what good, today, is mere cost advantage, differentiation, or value chain control? For Target, Motorola, and Microsoft, respectively, the answer is: no good at all. In contrast, as today's radical innovators reinvent better economics built on more valuable ideals, they are discovering fresh, new, often explosive sources of advantage — which differ radically from yesterday's tired and tapped-out sources of advantage.

How can you start playing by the rules of a better kind of capitalism? My rules are detailed in two presentations here and here. They're not the only rules, or even the best rules — but they are a starting point for exploring a more authentic kind of value creation.

RIS, May 14 (Reuters) - LVMH is to take a minority stake in Edun, the ecological and ethical fashion start-up founded by Irish singer and campaigner Bono and his wife, the world's biggest luxury group said on Thursday.

Launched in 2005, Edun aims to promote sustainable development and fair trading by selling T-shirts and dresses in organic cotton made in countries such a India, Peru, Uganda, Kenya and Lesotho.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are proud to contribute to the operational development of Edun and to the improvement of living standards of local communities," LVMH said in a statement.

The French group's other fashion brands include Celine, Kenzo, Donna Karan and Louis Vuitton.

Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, is the lead singer of the rock band U2 and a active humanitarian campaigner, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"With LVMH, we can step up its (Edun's) development, giving greater stability to our suppliers and the local communities they support," Bono said in LVMH's statement.

Edun will maintain its headquarters in Dublin and a subsidiary in New York. Mark Weber, head of Donna Karan International, will supervise LVMH's investment for the French luxury group.

Die Denims werden nur per Hand mit Sandpapier behandelt. In seltenen Fällen wird mit speziellen Chemikalien gearbeitet. Dann aber ausschließlich in einem kontrollierten Umfeld (Vakuumkammern)und die überschüssigen Chemikalien werden recycelt.

Weltwassertag

Gestern, am 22. März, war wieder einmal der Weltwassertag. Dass seit 1993 jährlich stattfindende Event wird von den Vereinten Nationen gefördert. Damit soll die Aufmerksamkeit auf Wasserthemen gelenkt werden. Das Blaue Gold wird immer knapper auf der Erde. Zahlreiche Wissenschaftler warnen davor, dass die Kriege der Zukunft nicht mehr um Rohöl sondern um Wasser geführt werden. Deshalb gilt es, unnötigen Wasserverbrauch zu minimieren. Beim herkömmlichen Baumwollanbau werden sehr viele Chemikalien eingesetzt, die das Grundwasser verseuchen. Deshalb setzt Kuyichi auf Organic Cotton. Somit wird das Grundwasser geschont und Kuyichi trägt ein Stück weit bei, die knappen Wasserressourcen auf unserem Planeten zu schonen.

Laufen wie barfuß

Wer kennt es nicht: Der Rücken schmerzt, der Schuh drückt und der Fuß brennt. Man sehnt sich nach dem Gefühl von warmen Sand zwischen den Zehen. Das tolle Gefühl des letzten Barfuß-Spazierganges am Strand ist noch in Erinnerung. Man denkt an grüne Sommerwiesen, welche barfuß erkundet werden und an die Grashalme, die an den Füßen kitzeln. Gut ein Viertel der menschlichen Knochen befinden sich im Fuß. Tausende Nervenenden machen den Fuß zu einem tastempfindlichen Körperteil. Mediziner sind sich einig, dass barfuß laufen das beste für den Körper ist. Es stärkt die Muskeln in den Füßen, stellt die natürliche Körperhaltung wieder her und das Spüren des Bodens sensibilisiert die Nerven. Doch wer läuft schon in der Stadt barfuß? Scherben, Müll und Dreck verhindern natürliches Gehen. Doch es gibt Alternativen:

Gestern Abend war es also so weit. In seiner 1111. Sendung setzte Johannes B. Kerner ganz auf die grüne Karte. Gemeinsam mit den Leuten von utopia.de organisierte die Kerner Crew und das ZDF eine ökologisch verträgliche Sendung. Zu Gast war unter anderem die Utopia Gründerin Claudia Lange, die auch an der Ausarbeitung der Sendung beteiligt war. Weitere Gäste waren unter anderem Bundesumweltminister Sigmar Gabriel und Tübingens Oberbürgermeister Boris Palmer.
Die Macher der Sendung orientierten sich dabei an der Zehn-Punkte Liste von Utopia. Die Gäste sind mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln angereist, die Unterlagen der Sendung wurden auf Altpapier gedruckt, die Gäste wurden mit Bio-Lebensmittel verköstigt und die Maskenbildnerin nutzte Öko Make-up. Des Weiteren wurde der Energieverbrauch der Studiobeleuchtung auf 0,5 Prozent des üblichen Verbrauchs gesenkt, indem die Produzenten nach zehn Minuten der Sendung Neonlicht einschalteten, was zu einem für die Zuschauer ungewöhnlichen Licht führte. Das TV-Bild hatte einen leichten Blaustich.
Der Moderator selbst trug einen schicken Anzug, welcher nach Nachhaltigkeitsprämissen gefertigt wurde. Bleibt zu Hoffen, dass die Sendung vom Donnerstagabend keine Ausnahme war.

Kuyichi for Dummies

Im Jahr 2000 beginnt die niederländische NGO Solidaridad, neben dem Handel mit Fair Trade Produkten wie Kaffee und Obst, den Anbau von biologischer Baumwolle in Peru zu fördern. Denn der herkömmliche Anbau von Baumwolle ist nicht nur schädlich für die Umwelt, sondern auch für alle daran beteiligten Personen. Ziel ist es, Biobaumwolle in die fashion industry einzuführen.

Weil keine der großen Jeansbrands Interesse hat, ist die Entscheidung schnell gefällt: Solidaridad wird selbst ein Label gründen.

Kuyichi startet 2001 in Holland als „style conscious" jeans brand. Ziel ist, Fashion, Fair Trade und Organic zusammenzubringen.

Kuyichi (gesprochen: ku-jie-tschi) ist der Name eines peruanischen Regengottes. Nach einer alten Legende bestraft Kuyichi die Taquile Indianer, weil sie achtlos mit der Natur umgegangen sind. Er nimmt ihnen die Farben weg. Indem die Indianer zusammen arbeiten und wunderschöne Stoffe weben, erhalten sie die Farben schließlich wieder zurück.

Das Markenlogo, ein Kreis mit einem eingeschlossenen Plus soll diese Positivität und Zusammenarbeit symbolisieren.

Der Kreis steht für die Welt, das Plus für Positivität, für Geben und Nehmen. Setzen auch Sie ein Zeichen!
