This is a very strange road system: freeway directly connected to the runway!!
WHY?
Look to the left, you can find a tunnel less than 700m.I think it is more like a giant shelter for air crafts.

USS Horne (DLG/CG-30) was a Belknap-class destroyer leader / cruiser. Named for Admiral Frederick J. Horne, 1880-1959. She was launched as DLG-30, a frigate, and reclassified Cruiser on 30 June 1975.

After more than 26 years of service, Horne was decommissioned on 4 February 1994. She was struck the same day, placed in the custody of the United States Maritime Administration and was laid up at the Suisun Bay National Defense Reserve Fleet. Initially scheduled to be scrapped, she was spared the breakers torch and was sunk as a target on June 29th, 2008 as part of RIMPAC 2008.

It was named after Red Oak, Iowa, which suffered a disproportionate number of casualties in early World War II battles. The ship was active during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Stonecutters bridge, under construction. Hong-Kong

Stonecutters Bridge is a high level cable-stayed bridge which spans the Rambler Channel in Hong Kong, connecting Nam Wan Kok, Tsing Yi Island and Stonecutters Island. The bridge deck was completed on 7th April 2009[1], making this the second longest cable-stayed span in the world.

The approaches at Tsing Yi and Stonecutters Island are located near Container Terminal 9 and Container Terminal 8, respectively. Construction commenced on 27 April 2004 and is expected to be completed in 2009 by MaedaHitachiYokogawaHsin Chong Joint Venture. It costs HK$ 2,760 million. It was reported to be overbudget.

The bridge is part of Hong Kong's Route 8, connecting Sha Tin, Cheung Sha Wan, Tsing Yi Island, Ma Wan and Lantau Island. Other major constructions along the route are Nam Wan Tunnel (completed in 2008), Eagle's Nest Tunnel (completed in 2008), Sha Tin Heights Tunnel (completed in 2008), Tsing Ma Bridge (completed in 1997) and Kap Shui Mun Bridge (completed in 1997).

As a result of the interesting challenges and extreme difficulty in constructing this bridge, the project was featured on the Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering series in 2006.

Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (December 24, 1905 April 5, 1976) was an American aviator, industrialist, film producer and director, philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. He gained fame in the late 1920s as a maverick film producer, making big budget and often controversial films like Hell's Angels, Scarface, and The Outlaw. Hughes was one of the most influential aviators in history. He set multiple world air-speed records (for which he won many awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal), built the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 "Hercules" aircraft, and acquired and expanded Trans World Airlines. Wilbur Wrights Museum and birthplace

Flight pioneer Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867 in this small farm house near Millville, Indiana. He was the third of seven children born to Milton Wright and Susan Catherine Koerner Wright (married in 1859). Milton was a minister in the United Brethren Church, professor of theology, editor of his church newspaper, and an elected Bishop in his church. Susan excelled in literature and science at Hartville College, especially mathematics. She was quite skilled with hand tools and often built household appliances and toys for her family. During his childhood, Wilbur developed many technical skills and learned critical thinking, attributes that would eminate throughout his life.

Interestingly, none of the Wright children were given middle names. Instead, Milton and Susan tried hard to give them distinctive first names. Wilbur was named for Wilbur Fiske and Orville for Orville Dewey, both clergyman that Milton admired. They were "Will" and "Orv" to their friends, and "Ullam" and "Bubs" to each other.

On this spot the house of the Wrights lived in Dayton OH. It was also Orville's birthplace.

The house has been removed to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn MI along with ther bicycle shop which was located next to their home.

Instead of the house you see the foundations and the veranda replica of the house. On the opposite side of the house is a similar house.

The Fort at Number 4 was the northernmost British settlement along the Connecticut River in New Hampshire until after the French and Indian War. Now known as Charlestown, it was more than 30 miles (50 km) from the nearest other British settlement at Fort Dummer. Construction began in 1740 by brothers Stephen, Samuel and David Farnsworth. By 1743, there were 10 families settled in a square of interconnected houses, enclosed in a stockade with a guard tower.

The small town of Mars Bluff was the place where in 1958 a B-47 Stratojet accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb - fortunately without the removable core. 7,600 pounds of conventional explosives created a 75 feet wide crater. Some people from the family living in a nearby farm house were injured from the explosion, nobody was killed.

Awkward thing, especially for some Air Force guys...

The Kjosfossen is a legendary waterfall in Norway. It belongs to the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane province and is located directly on the Flamsbanen (railway between Myrdal and Flam. 1951, near the waterfall, a stopping place for trains was built for the train passengers leave the train in order to visit the waterfall. It's an impressing sight and the sound from the water is like thunder, and don't forget rainwar when you are there. The stopping place is located about four kilometers from the railway station Myrdal away at an altitude of 670 meters above sea level.

During the peak summer travel time appear at the entrance of the train Fairie (Norwegian Huldrene) which is a dance perform at the waterfall. The performers are students of the Norwegian Ballet School.

Reichenbach Falls - And Sherlock Holmes

The Reichenbach Falls (Reichenbachfall) are a series of waterfalls near Meiringen in Bern canton in central Switzerland. They have a total drop of 250 m (820 ft). At 90 m (295.2 ft), the Upper Reichenbach Falls is one of the highest cataracts in the Alps. The falls are made accessible by the Reichenbachfall-Bahn funicular railway.

Today, a hydro-electric power company harnesses the flow of the Reichenbach Falls during certain times of year, greatly reducing its flow.

The town and the falls are known worldwide as the setting for an event which never actually happened: Reichenbach Falls is the location where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's hero, Sherlock Holmes, apparently dies at the end of "The Adventure of the Final Problem" locked in mortal combat with his arch nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Out of many waterfalls in the Bernese Oberland, the Reichenbach Falls seems to have made the greatest impression on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. So impressed was Doyle that he decided to let his hero die there. A memorial plate at the funicular station commemorates Holmes, and there is a Sherlock Holmes museum in the nearby town of Meiringen. The actual ledge from which Moriarty and Holmes apparently fall is on the other side of the falls; it is accessible by climbing the path to the top of the falls, crossing the bridge and following the trail down the hill. The ledge is marked by a plaque written in English, German and French; the English inscription reads: "At this fearful place, Sherlock Holmes vanquished Professor Moriarty, on 4 May 1891."

Thylejren also called "Froestrup camp" began in summer 1970, the first festival in Denmark. Association for the festival the New Society had found a piece of land in between Thy Froestrup and Oesterild to organize a festival that was inspired by Woodstock. The idea for Thylejren came from Jacob Ludvigsen and Lasse Ellegaard, they gave the idea to Henning Kloevedal Prince and Leif Varmark [1]. As you can see historically, there has been much since then. From being a place you like summer camp to a place with residents who would return to the wild, primitive living, and until the middle eighties, even without power.

Thylejren is a haven in the sense that it creates life, life activity, complications, developments. It has space for leaning existences, imaginative artists, caring mothers and fathers, shaman, women and horses and much more. It is both part of Denmark and the society we are all part of and it reported out of the unconscious forbrugerræs and interview kitchen culture.

Thylejren owned by the association "The New Society" which is organized through the General Assembly (every year, 21.8. Kl.13.00) as a senior decision-making authority, that is not a board or a president. Decisions shall be taken in consensus, but also vote. Thylejren is a social experiment in its 38 year.

Air New Zealand Flight 901 (TE901) was a scheduled Antarctic sightseeing flight from Auckland Airport in New Zealand. The Antarctic sightseeing flights were operated with McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 aircraft and began in February 1977. On 28 November 1979 the 14th flight crashed into Mount Erebus, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crewmembers aboard.

Bhaktivedanta Manor is a Gaudiya Vaishnava temple set in the Hertfordshire countryside of England in the village of Aldenham near Watford. The Manor, as it is called by those familiar with it, is owned and run by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as ISKCON or the Hare Krishna movement. It is ISKCON's largest property in the UK, and one of the most frequently visited Radha-Krishna temples in Europe. It stands in 70 acres (280,000 m2) of landscaped grounds consisting of lawns, flower gardens, a children's playground, an artificial lake that attracts many water fowl, and a substantial car-park.

It was converted from a country mansion called Piggott's Manor, which name may still show on older maps.

The late Beatles musician George Harrison gave the Manor as an offering of devotion to the founder or the Hare Krishna movement, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Harrison had a close relationship with Prabhupada and met and stayed with him on several occasions. Prabhupada renamed the property Bhaktivedanta Manor: "Bhaktivedānta" is Sanskrit for "devotion-Vedanta", i.e. "the Vedanta which is about devotion".

Harrison said he envisaged the Manor would be "showplace for Krishna consciousness" and "A place where people could get a taste of the splendor of devotional service to the Supreme Lord."

Friar Park is the 120-room Victorian neo-Gothic mansion previously owned by the eccentric Sir Frank Crisp near Henley-on-Thames and bought by the musician George Harrison as his new home on 14 January 1970, as he left his former home Kinfauns, in Esher.

Harrison installed a 16-track tape-based recording studio in a guest suite, which at one stage was superior to the one at EMI's Abbey Road Studios. Harrison's albums recorded there usually mention F.P.S.H.O.T., or Friar Park Studio, Henley-on-Thames. Besides records by Harrison or artists he produced, the studio was also used by Shakespear's Sister to record their 1992 album Hormonally Yours.

Harrison immortalised the building in his song "Crackerbox Palace" (his nickname for the mansion, after Lord Buckley's home in California). A further song, The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll), was also inspired by the mansion's history. Harrison loved tending to the gardens personally, and among the groundskeepers were his older brothers Peter and Harry.

The mansion was largely open to the public, until the murder of John Lennon in December 1980; shortly afterward, the gates were locked, and security features such as razor-wire fences and video cameras were installed. Despite these measures, an intruder broke into the residence in the early morning hours of December 30, 1999, attacking Harrison and his wife, leaving Harrison suffering a punctured lung, seven stab wounds, and head injuries.

Harrison's widow, Olivia, and son, Dhani, continued to live in the mansion for months after Harrison's death from cancer in November 2001.

On the roof of the youth center Viadukten in Roskilde you can see a Draken plane that was used by the Royal Danish Air Force from june 4th. 1971 and had it's last flight for the AF on september 11th. 1992 with a total flights oof 3607 hours and 40 minutes. It's registrations number was AR-105.

Today it's connected to a flight simulator in the youth center and it moves the way the simulator goes. The flight sim uses a Draken (AR-113)

The plane was given to the youth center in 2002 by the danish Draken society, Draken Team Karup) and placed on top of the building in december 2003.

The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It is named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland. The two canals were previously connected by a series of 11 locks, but by the 1930s these had fallen into disuse, were filled in and the land built upon.

The Millennium Commission decided to regenerate the canals of central Scotland to connect Glasgow with Edinburgh once more. Designs were submitted for a lock to link the canals, with the Falkirk Wheel design winning. As with many Millennium Commission projects the site includes a visitors' centre containing a shop, cafe and exhibition centre.

The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight storey building. The structure is located near the Rough Castle Fort and the closest village is Tamfourhill. On 24 May 2002, Queen Elizabeth II opened the Falkirk Wheel as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations. The opening had been delayed by a month due to flooding caused by vandals who forced open the Wheel's gates.

The Anderton Boat Lift

The Anderton Boat Lift near the village of Anderton, Cheshire, in north-west England provides a 50 feet (15.2 m) vertical link between two navigable waterways: the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Built in 1875, the boat lift was in use for over 100 years until it was closed due to corrosion in 1983. Restoration started in 2001 and the boat lift was re-opened in 2002. The lift and associated visitor centre and exhibition are operated by British Waterways. It is one of only two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom; the other is Falkirk Wheel in Scotland.

Neda Salehi Agha-Soltan (born 1982, died June 20, 2009) was an Iranian woman whose death by gunfire, during the 2009 Iranian election protests, was captured on video by bystanders. The graphic videos were posted on the Internet, and her name quickly became a rallying cry for the opposition. Neda means "voice" or "calling" or "Divine message" in Persian, and she has been referred to as the "voice of Iran" and "a symbol of pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime" in the world. Her last name has also been spelled as Soltani in some media reports.

Because of engine problems on their Boeing 737-300 HA-LES, Tupolev 154 HA-LCR was used for Malev's regular service to Thessaloniki. Approaching Thessaloniki, the crew had to carry out a different approach procedure than they had planned for. A Boeing 757 had not cleared the runway yet after landing so they had to slow down and at the last moment they received clearance to land. The crew had forgotten to lower the gear, which was noted by the tower contoller. He told the crew that they did not have their gear down. A go around was attempted, but the crew was not able to arrest the high descent rate, the belly touched the runway, the airframe and inboard flaps sustaining substantial damage. A safe landing was carried out, but the plane was damaged beyond economical repair.

UTA Flight 772 of the French airline, Union des Transports Aeriens, was a scheduled flight operating from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, via N'Djamena in Chad, to Paris CDG airport in France.
On 19 September 1989 the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft registered N54629 took off from N'Djamena International Airport at 13:13. Forty six minutes later, at its cruising altitude of 10,700 metres (35,000 ft), an explosion caused UTA Flight 772 to break up over the Sahara Desert near the towns of Bilma and Tenere in Niger. All 156 passengers and 14 crew members died, including Bonnie Pugh, wife of the American ambassador to Chad, Robert Pugh.

The Battle of Cable Street or Cable Street Riot took place on Sunday 4 October 1936 in Cable Street in the East End of London. It was a clash between the Metropolitan Police Service, overseeing a legal march by the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley, and anti-fascists, including local Jewish, socialist, anarchist, Irish and communist groups. The majority of both marchers and counter-protesters travelled into the area for this purpose. Mosley planned to send thousands of marchers dressed in uniforms styled on those of Blackshirts through the East End of London, which had a large Jewish population.

This Twitter account simply takes any new threads in the forums and tweets out the title of the thread and a link. It’s a good way to keep up with new discussions without having to wade through the forums each day. If you participate in a thread, then you can just “subscribe” to the thread when you’re posting to automatically receive e-mail updates of new posts.

Also, don’t forget about the main @gearthhacks Twitter account. It currently posts items from the blog, but soon we’ll be pushing new file uploads to it as well.

New 3D cities: some new, some ancient

Google has brought out a handful of new 3D cities in the past few days. Today saw the release of Seattle and Pittsburgh, both of which now have hundreds of full-color buildings and look excellent. Here is a shot from Pittsburgh.

A few days ago, Google unveiled a new layer for Google Earth that has over 5700 hundred buildings from ancient Rome rebuilt in 3D. It’s a slow-loading collection, but it is amazing. Here is a short video introducing the new layer:

Google Earth comes to the iPhone and StreetView goes to Spain

A couple of cool new things today:

Google Earth is now available as a free app for the iPhone. Not only is it free, but it’s good! It looks very similar to the normal Google Earth program, includes 3D terrain, Wikipedia/Panoramio icons and a few other goodies. No 3D buildings, but that’s not a problem for now. The interface is phenomenal, with superb gesture controls and even a bit of accelerometer support. My wish for version 2 is that they offer some kind of KML support so we can push our own files out to it.

Google Maps StreetView is now in Spain. They’ve added StreetView to four Spanish cities – Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia and Barcelona. As you find cool sights in those areas, be sure to post them to our StreetView section, which now has nearly 2500 locations in it!

Version 2.2 of the iPhone firmware should be out in a few weeks and promises to have StreetView support, so that will be kind of a mesh of these two items. Hopefully the interface on that is as good as it is in the new Google Earth application.

Amazing Race 13 in Google Maps

My wife and I have been big fans of The Amazing Race for a few years now, so I thought it’d be fun to track their route throughout the season. Below is their map after the first leg, from Los Angeles, CA to Salvador, Brazil. I’ll be updating the map each week with more information, photos, etc, so check back each week to see the latest updates.

The red lines/icons are areas that have already been completed (as shown on TV), the green pushpin is their current location, and the yellow lines are the future destinations for the contestants.

Be sure to zoom in on each area of the map for more details and information.

Amazing Race 13 in Google Maps

If you’re away from home and looking for something to kill some time, we’ve got your answer — GEH: Mobile. It’s thousands of files from our database in the palm of your hand, in the format of a simple mobile website. It’s designed with the iPhone in mind, but should work well with any recent smartphone. Having only been able to test on an iPhone, I’d love to get some feedback from other smartphone users (N95, etc).

The mobile site gives you quick access to about 80% of our file library (no 3D models or image overlays). You can view the newest files, most popular file, or view them by category. Every file has a thumbnail, and will link you to the real location on Google Maps — on the iPhone it will launch the “Maps” application and take you there. In addition, you can sort items by date/popularity, read full descriptions and view comments made by other users.

Visit the site on your phone by going to m.gearthhacks.com. If you save a bookmark to your home screen on your iPhone, you’ll get a custom GEH icon as shown above. Below are a few screenshots.

Exactly five months after it first launched, our StreetView section received its 2000th file — not bad!

File # 2000 was a good find — a clear shot of the streetview car in a mirror on the side of the road.

Of the 2000 files, the most popular (by votes) is the “burning car“, which is pretty self-explanatory. The most-viewed file is “girl changing clothes at car“, with over 24,000 views.

We’ve got some big plans to improve our StreetView section even further, so keep sending us your great finds!

It appears there are some major imagery updates that have just been released for Google Earth. Google Earth Blog has a growing list, which includes locations from all over the world (US, Switzerland, Turkey, Italy, etc).

It seems to be quite a huge update! Keep your eyes on Google Earth Blog or Digital Earth Blog as more locations are found.

Tropical Atlantic has built some useful tools for Google Earth, showing a variety of possible storm tracks for all of the major storms. Being able to side a wide variety of computer models in Google Earth gives you a great way to see where the storms might land. Check it out!

As I revealed on the Digital Earth Blog last night, EarthSwoop has launched. What is it? EarthSwoop is a tool you can use to easily create collections of locations around the globe. Some examples:

It’s very easy to create a collection, and the result is a nice interface with lots of tools to enhance your data. Here is a short video that shows you how to create a collection, or you can get a little more info over on the Digital Earth Blog.

Here is an example of an embedded collection, the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums:
