This is a subject I've since written about, spoken about, shared about.

But at the time I suffered in silence. As so many do. The extent of my struggle known to very, very few.

Ashamed and in pain, I considered myself damaged goods. And the voices in my head urged me down the path to self-destruction. Not for the first time.

I've struggled with depression since childhood. It's a battle that's cost me time, opportunities, relationships, and a thousand sleepless nights.

In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to. Count on to get me through. There were stretches when the highlight of my week was a favorite meal and a new episode of TOP CHEF. Sometimes that was enough. Had to be.

And I put on weight. Big f--king deal.One day, out for a hike in Los Angeles with a friend, we crossed paths with a film crew shooting a reality show. Unbeknownst to me, paparazzi were circling. They took my picture, and the photos were published alongside images of me from another time in my career. "Hunk To Chunk." "Fit To Flab." Etc.

My mother has one of those "friends" who's always the first to bring you bad news. They clipped one of these articles from a popular national magazine and mailed it to her. She called me, concerned.

In 2010, fighting for my mental health, it was the last thing I needed.

Long story short, I survived.

So do those pictures.

I'm glad.

Now, when I see that image of me in my red t-shirt, a rare smile on my face, I am reminded of my struggle. My endurance and my perseverance in the face of all kinds of demons. Some within. Some without.

Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist.

Anyway. Still. Despite.

The first time I saw this meme pop up in my social media feed, I have to admit, it hurt to breathe. But as with everything in life, I get to assign meaning. And the meaning I assign to this/my image is Strength. Healing. Forgiveness.

Google has sent two other major algorithms to strike at websites.

The second algorithm – a G-1000 known as Penguin — was sent in 2012 to find websites with unnatural link profiles and terminate them from the search results.

While neither algorithmic update was perfect, both succeeded in their overall mission. Now Google is sending a third.

Google’s RankBrain: Analyzing Page Relevance on a 1-10 Scale

Now, as before, Google has sent a G-X, a new machine learning system that will change SEO and the organic search results as we’ve known them.

RankBrain will analyze Web pages for relevance. Every page will get a score between 1 and 10, with 1 being a dubious result and 10 being extremely strong.

But wait! This RankBrain technology is eerily derived from earlier G-350 technology. You may know it better as Google AdWords’ Quality Score. This intelligent AdWords technology never needed external signals (e.g., links) to rank paid search ads for relevance. Soon it will be the same for organic search.

Is this it? The SEO apocalypse? Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh.

No, it isn’t. I’ve come from the future to share the secret solutions used in the past to help you today as you prepare for the rise of the machines.

A group of resistance fighters have already fought, and won, great Quality Score wars. Resistance fighters like myself, Frederick Vallaeys, and a squad of highly-trained AdWords Quality Score experts have learned to fight back and win. Now it’s time to share our intel on how to defeat RankBrain.

There’s no fate but what we make. Today I’m sharing four key strategies to prepare for RankBrain in order to prevent your website from facing Judgment Day.

Hang On … Judgment Day? Overdramatic Much?

Imagine one day you wake up to find your website gone. Just gone. The fate of your site decided by a new order of machine intelligence in just a microsecond.

In the future RankBrain will take over the search results. All of them. In one possible future, Judgment Day happens on September 27, 2018* — Google’s 18th birthday. (*Standard Time Travel Causal Loop Disclaimer: Give or take a few months — time travel and navigating these time lines is quite tricky!)

For now, RankBrain is mainly used on complex long-tail search queries. But assuming RankBrain will only ever be used on long-tail queries would be dramatically underestimating its potential.

Google has pointed out that 15 percent of the millions of queries it handles have never been searched before. Additionally, for upwards of 99 percent of content across the Web, Google simply doesn’t have enough signals (insufficient link and historical page data) to determine the most relevant search result for users. There are also whole niches that lack reliable natural link data (authoritative sites rarely link to porn, for example).

So now, with RankBrain, Google is learning in a very advanced way exactly what people click on and whether or not they are satisfied with the result when they click through.

Yes, Google is only using it on some queries for now. But when you create a new system like RankBrain, you wouldn’t initially test it on your big-money head terms — just as you wouldn’t replace a wildly successful paid search ad with an experimental one. You test on the things you’re least confident in.

There’s less downside and risk if Google’s RankBrain results aren’t as good in the early days. They will learn and come up with better answers based on analysis of user success metrics. Over time, Google’s confidence in RankBrain will grow and the signal will get more and more weighty.

Judgment Day is when RankBrain becomes the #1 ranking factor.

The link and on-page SEO signals won’t go away completely (they can always be used to corroborate other factors). But one day, they won’t be the most important factor in rankings. RankBrain will.

Rand Fishkin has warned SEOs of the possibility of a future where Google leverages algorithmic inputs for search rankings without requiring human intervention — an idea which was predictably dismissed by Google (what would you expect them to say…)

A relevance score. That sure sounds a lot like Quality Score, doesn’t it? Google already uses a relevance score with AdWords, the Display Network, YouTube Ads, and Gmail Ads. They just call it Quality Score. It’s been so wildly successful that Twitter Quality Adjusted Bids and Facebook Relevance Score are largely the same concept.

Organic search will be next.

Now, on to those four RankBrain strategies you’ll need to survive in the new world.

1. High Organic CTRs: Your Highest Probability For SEO Success

Google uses its Quality Score algorithm to rate the quality and relevance of your keywords and AdWords ads. Click-through rate, the relevance of each keyword to its ad group, landing page quality and relevance, ad text relevance, your historic AdWords performance — all of this ultimately determines your cost per click and your ad rank in the ad auction process.

The key to beating the Quality Score algorithm is just a matter of beating the expected click-through rate for a given ad spot. Important: There is no one expected CTR — CTRs will vary by time of day, device, location and other factors.

This graph (based on WordStream client data*) maps Quality Score against the ratio of actual click-through rate to expected click-through rate by position. As you can see, the AdWords Quality Score algorithm is largely just a matter of beating the expected click-through rate for a given ad position.

The better your ad does compared to the expected CTR, the higher your Quality Score.

By looking at millions of ads (from WordStream client accounts*) and averaging their click-through rates by ad position, we were able to reverse-engineer the expected CTR of an ad, and this is what we found:

If your ad is in position 1, you don’t have extra points for having a 5 percent CTR — Google expects your CTR to be that high when you’re in that position. You need to do even better than expected to prove to Google that your ad is especially high-quality and relevant to users.

What does this have to do with SEO, in a world where “content is king” and backlinks are critical to better rankings? Well, that’s where you need to start adjusting your thinking.

The future of SEO isn’t about beating another page based on content length, social metrics, keyword usage or your number of backlinks. Better organic search visibility will come from beating your competitors with a higher than expected click-through rate.

Put simply: People are both the problem and the solution. RankBrain is learning from human decisions — specifically what they click on. Attracting higher click-through rates will be critical to your SEO success, just as it is the most important component of PPC success.

To figure this out, go into Search Console in Google Webmaster Tools. This will show you average position and click-through rates for the queries you rank for.

Figuring out what’s a good click-through rate for organic search is beyond complicated. There are a lot of factors, like query type, number of ads, personalization, location, and the presence of Knowledge Graph, a featured snippet or other Google SERP elements (plus this data comes from the future and is not set in stone). But you’ll notice right away that the CTR for your #1 rankings is super-high (over 32 percent for “marketing ideas,” above) compared to lower rankings, even relatively high average positions like 3 (under 3 percent for “ppc,” which Google interprets as a commercial query).

In “Google Organic Click Through Rates” on Moz, Philip Petrescu shared the following CTR data:

So, as a very basic example using the chart above, if you’re in Position 1, and you have a CTR lower than 30 percent, you’re in danger of losing your spot once RankBrain finds a relevant page with a better-than-expected CTR for its current position. If you have a much higher than expected CTR in a lower position (e.g., if you have a 15 percent CTR in Position 3), you should expect a bump up to at least the #2 position.

But again, CTR varies greatly based on so many different factors that simply using these static benchmarks isn’t a perfect approach. What’s an SEO to do?

Thankfully the notion of trying to achieve an above average click-through rate is not a new concept, at least from a PPC marketer’s perspective, and there are ridiculously smart PPC tactics that SEOs can borrow from.

Keep in mind: PPC marketers obsess about getting high Quality Scores (which is essentially above average CTRs for your query type and average position). It’s among the most important AdWords success KPIs. Below average CTR results in terrible things.

Figuring out your “organic Quality Score”

The challenge is that in SEO, Google doesn’t provide you with a Quality Score number to tell you if your content is above or below the expected click-through rate. But I’ve developed a hack to determine which of your keywords are most likely underperforming compared to the expected click-through rate:The Larry RankBrain Risk Detection Algorithm.

Just download all of your query data from Webmaster Tools and plot CTR vs. Average Position for the queries you rank for organically, like this:

Next, plot an exponential trend line. The queries that fall below your average CTR are your queries that are likely most at risk for future RankBrain updates. Conversely, the queries that score above the trend line are most likely to get a boost from future RankBrain updates.

If you then do a secondary sort on your most “at risk” pages using a metric like pageviews or conversions generated by those keywords, you can prioritize your optimization efforts on the most important, most at-risk pages on your site. The Larry RankBrain Risk Detection Algorithm is very similar to what PPC marketers do on a regular basis — which is to prioritize the optimization of low Quality Score keywords and ads first, because that is where you have the least risk (it’s less risky to fix your losers) and most potential upside.

Bottom line: You must beat the expected CTR for a given organic search position. Optimize for relevance or die.

2. How to Optimize Your SEO Headlines and Descriptions for Above Average CTR

“SEO” headlines (title tags) and meta descriptions do OK. But keyword-optimized titles are the equivalent of “Dynamic Keyword Insertion” for PPC ads. Take a look at the WordStream client data* below for ads with DKI. They generate above-average returns:

However ads using DKI are actually less likely to produce ads that are among the top 5 percent or top 1 percent of ads with highest click-through rates, normalized by ad position (AKA unicorn status).

Just look at these ads for [big data solutions].

These ads are OK, I guess. They probably perform well enough. But, like many search-optimized titles, they’re also pretty boring, generic, and average. I don’t want to click on them. Do you?

To beat RankBrain, “OK” isn’t enough. Your organic listings must have REMARKABLE click-through rates.

Our search into millions of PPC ads has shown that the single most powerful way to increase CTR in ads is to leverage emotional triggers. Like this PPC ad:

Tapping into emotions will get your target customer/audience clicking! Anger. Disgust. Affirmation. Fear. These are some of the most powerful triggers that not only drive click through rate, but also increase conversion rates.

Don’t make changes willy-nilly. Test out headlines as paid search ads or as social media updates linking to your content using different headlines — look at click through rates. Audition your headlines, eliminate the losers and use your winners as your SEO titles.

By no means should you forget about keywords and focus just on the emotion. Focusing on just keyword optimization or just emotion is a recipe for average titles and descriptions. Plus, without keywords, how will Google even know to “try out” your content on the SERP and see what kind of CTR it gets? (Google does this regularly with ads; that’s how it knows if your ad beats the expected CTR for its position or not.)

No, you need to combine keywords and emotional triggers to create SEO superstorms that result in ridiculous CTRs and leave your competition devastated.

Bottom line: Use emotional triggers + keywords in your titles and descriptions if you want your CTR to go from “OK” to great.

3. Optimize for Task Completion

One of the hidden things that Quality Score measures is task completion rates (i.e. conversion rates). Google definitely knows what your conversion rates are.

How the heck does Google know your conversion rates? Well, the machines have learned to tell whether traffic to your site converts.

Now in organic search, a conversion may not equate to completing a form. If you’re pushing a piece of content, Google can look at engagement metrics like time on site and bounce rate, because higher engagement correlates with higher interest/relevance.

Google has seven products that boast more than a billion users — Android, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Play, Search and YouTube. So Google can tell in a lot of different ways when signed-in users are successful or unsuccessful at their tasks.

Plus, Google Analytics tracks millions of sites. And Google gets tons of insanely valuable data from AdWords — task completion technology was rolled out to advertisers as smart goals, a way to track conversions on advertiser websites without having to install additional conversion code.

Basically, you need to strive to have higher than anticipated or expected engagement metrics, based on a variety of criteria, including query and device type, location and time of day. Your task completion must also be better than other similar sites.

Let’s say you work for a tech company. Your visitors, on average, are bouncing away at 80 percent for the typical session, but users on a competing website are viewing more pages per session and have a bounce rate of just 50 percent. RankBrain views them as better than you – and they appear above you in the SERPs. In this case, the task completion rate is engagement.

Bottom line: If you have high task completion rates, Google will assume your content is relevant. If you have crappy task completion rates, RankBrain will penalize you.

4. Increase Search Volume & CTR Using Social Ads and Display Remarketing

People who are familiar with your brand are 2x more likely to click on your ads and 2x more likely to convert. We know this because targeting a user who has already visited your website (or app) via RLSA (remarketing lists for search ads) always produces higher CTRs than generically targeting the same keywords to users who are unfamiliar with your brand.

So, one ingenious method to increase your organic CTRs and beat RankBrain is to bombard your specific target market with Facebook and Twitter ads. Facebook ads are proven to lift mobile search referral traffic volume to advertiser websites (by 6 percent on average, up to 12.8 percent.) Here’s the research.

With more than a billion daily users, your audience is definitely using the Social Network. Facebook ads are inexpensive – even spending just $50 dollars on social ads can generate tremendous exposure and awareness of your brand.

Another relatively inexpensive way to dramatically build up brand recognition is to leverage the power of Display Ad remarketing on the Google Display Network. Marketers are famous for taking any technique that works and beating it to death. Google's director of Conversational Search, Beshad Behzadi, talked at length during his SMX West keynote about the future of search, showing scenes from the "Star Trek" TV show and the movie "Her" to illustrate points.

"The world is becoming increasingly mobile," Behzadi said, and in 2015, Web surfers performed more mobile searches than desktop queries. Modern devices, whether they're smartphones, smartwatches, or even cars, move with users and understand the context of where they are. Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), "we'll be talking to even more devices" in the near future, according to Behzadi.

More mobile devices mean more voice search, because mobile keyboards can be difficult to use when their owners are in motion; the keys are too small for any significant amount of typing; or the devices (such as IoT gadgets) lack keyboards altogether. (Google's Android mobile OS includes voice search features in its Google Now and Now on Tap services.)

Speech recognition tech continues to improve, with error rates down from 25 percent "a few years ago" to about 8 percent today, Behzadi said. (At its June 2015 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple claimed its virtual assistant, Siri, had an error rate of 5 percent.)

The result is that more people today perform longer "natural language queries," such as "What's the weather like in Paris?" instead of short, typed keyword queries, including "weather in Paris." Due to a growing number of mobile voice searches, Google is seeing longer queries, according to Behzadi.

As smartphones and other mobile devices get smarter, natural language queries will evolve into "conversational search," which takes into account users' current geolocations, the context of the search, and information about them, such as search history or places they used Google Maps to find in the past, Behzadi said. For example, if, while standing outside a restaurant, you ask your smartphone, "Show me the menu," it will understand that you want to see the menu of the restaurant you're at, according to Behzadi.

Or a person might ask, "What is the maximum speed of the 'Superman: Escape from Krypton' ride at Magic Mountain?" After receiving an answer in a "Quick Answer box" in search results (as opposed to a link to a website with the answer), the person might follow up with the question, "What's the height restriction?" And Google will know they're asking about that specific Superman ride.

When asked how SEO pros can optimize Web pages for voice search, Behzadi said that although queries types are changing, "it's [Google's] job to match them to Web content." He recommended focusing on quality content and ensuring sites are mobile friendly. (For more related advice, read, "How voice search and Google 'direct answers' are changing SEO.")

2. Answer customer questions with clear, concise and unique content

During a different SMX session, Adria Kyne, Vistaprint's organic SEO manager for North America, Australia and New Zealand, said marketers should "find out what your customers are asking your company," then provide clear and concise answers on their sites. Google often emphasizes Quick Answer boxes at the top of search results, especially in mobile searches, so users don't have to click beyond the search results pages for answers to their questions. (Google's "Knowledge Graph" is the source of many Quick Answer boxes that appear in search results.)

Content that is unique, or not in the public domain, and that effectively answers questions could be featured in Quick Answer boxes for specific queries. Kyne said marketers should use the HTML list format to improve their content's chances of being featured in Quick Answer boxes.

3. Tried-and-true basics will survive future algorithm updates

Google uses hundreds of ranking signals to find the Web content that best matches users' queries. Some of the most important signals have largely stayed the same during the past few years and aren't expected to change much in the future. Here are five key ranking factors:

Domain and page authority are indications of the quality and quantity of links that point to a domain or particular website page.

4. HTTPS will be even more important in the future

In 2014, as part of its quest to deliver the best search experience, Google boosted search rankings for sites that use HTTPS, the secure version of HTTP. "Google is now sending out stronger messages that HTTPS is important," said Vistaprint's Kyne, and it will "preferentially index pages" that have HTTPS certification by default. Google also said at that time that it wants to "encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe" on the Web, according to Search Engine Land.

Kyne said marketers and SEO pros should secure their websites with the 2048-bit encryption certification, a move that's often inexpensive, or even free via the Let's Encrypt certificate authority. After adding the encryption, it's important to test and optimize server performance, according to Kyne, because slower load times can be a turnoff for website visitors and send Google negative signals about site quality. It's also a good idea to use 301 redirects for sites' HTTP-to-HTTPS URLs, she said.

Google could easily "turn up the knob" at any time on the HTTPS ranking factor, according to Big Leap's Straatman. Another advantage of making the switch to the secure protocol is that it can help convert lookers into buyers. Many consumers today understand what HTTPS is, and they look for it on sites that ask for personal information or credit card numbers. Sites without HTTPS risk losing consumers.

5. Google has no love for slow mobile sites

With more searches happening on smartphones and tablets, it's crucial that marketers make sure their sites are mobile friendly and fast, according to Kyne.

Google's Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project is an open source initiative designed to "dramatically improve the performance of the mobile Web," the company said in an October 2015 blog post announcing the project. AMP is Google's response to proprietary platforms, such as Facebook Instant Articles and the Apple News app, that are designed to make news stories load quickly on mobile devices, Kyne said. The search giant may prioritize AMP-optimized mobile pages in the future, because speed is "among the signals favored by Google's ranking system," she said.

AMP helps simplify the Web's look and feel, according to Straatman. "One thing that's huge in design, in general, is simplification; just look at Apple," he says. "Their whole brand is about simplifying, so you might see more of that look with accelerated mobile pages."

Some critics voiced concern that Google already had too much leverage over the Internet, and AMP gives the company even more influence. AMP is trying to "change the way that the Web is built, killing off some technologies and advantaging others," wrote Joshua Benton, director of the Neiman Journalism Lab, in a blog post. Benton noted that AMP HTML documents do not support author-written JavaScript or third-party scripts. "In a world of controlled platforms and walled app gardens, the Web is the last open space standing, built over two decades, and there's something irksome about a few Google engineers deciding which parts to ban," he wrote.

6) Focus on mobile — but don't forget the user

Mobile is clearly the future of search, and providing quick access to the information mobile Web surfers want about your brand, products, or services is a strong SEO strategy.

"Google is in the business of returning the most relevant result possible, and now that includes having sites that are well designed for mobile devices," said Straatman. Higher quality content specific to the queries or voice commands people use to search will organically lead to higher rankings, he said.

"As we see an increase in mobile traffic, the important balance moving forward is in being able to answer website visitors' needs as quickly and as engagingly as possible," says Kevin Gamache, a search strategist with Wire Stone. "Sometimes this means providing a completely different experience for the mobile user (versus the desktop user) based on what they're trying to accomplish."

The decision to deliver a different mobile experience should "be based on the needs of that audience and understanding how those needs change as they interact with your site via mobile," Gamache says. "This can be accomplished through testing or through surveying customers and asking what type of mobile experience would make their ability to complete their interaction easier. "

Quality links not only help with search engine rankings, but they can also bring "quality traffic to your site," according to Casey Meraz, founder of Ethical SEO Consulting, who spoke during an SMX West session on local SEO.

Link source diversity is important, because websites with a variety of external sites that link to them tend to rank higher in search results, according to a February 2016 study from Backlinko. The number of unique referring domains was the single strongest correlation in the Backlinko study.

Keywords still matter, and they should be placed prominently and used frequently (within reason) on website pages, according to Shari Thurow, founder and SEO director of Omni Marketing Interactive, who spoke at SMX West.

Google also focuses on semantic search, in which keywords, along with user intent and contextual meaning, can influence the results for particular queries, according to James Straatman, an online marketing director for Big Leap.

It pays to cast your financial net online, where possibilities abound.

Monetizing your expertise -- whether in social networking or transcribing -- is one way to make money while sitting at your computer at home. But others also are popping up, such as taking online surveys or even predicting election results.

The good part: You don't have to pay a dime. And with some sites, you can start to make money online immediately. Most of these gigs are small, steady streams of cash. But they can add up to steady earnings over time.

To avoid scams, forget unknown or untested sites with big promises. "Find out if the site is legitimate," says Nick Mokey, associate editor of DigitalTrends.com. "How long has it been around? And what are they asking you to do?"

Also, keep a clock running so you can maximize your income without wasting your time. Follow these rules, and you'll find the Internet awash in moneymaking opportunities.

Pitch products online

Pitching other people's products is one of the Internet's best-paying gigs.

One method is being an affiliate at a mega-site such as Amazon.com, where commissions are up to 25 percent. Anytime anyone buys a product you're pitching, you get a cut. And you can choose from more than a million products, including gift cards or computers.

At ClickBank, commissions are even higher -- up to 75 percent -- and there are more than 50,000 products to choose from. Signing up is free.

On the downside, some ClickBank products can be of poor quality, says Bethany Mooradian, owner of QueenoftheRandomJob.com. So some products are easier to pitch than others. One solution is to buy the product ahead of time to assess its quality, she says.

Dish out answers

If you're an information junkie, this gig is for you.

There are several to choose from to make money online. At kgbanswers.com and JustAnswer.com, you become an expert after taking a brief test. At these websites, a customer asks a question and receives an answer from an "expert." At kgbanswers, answers come via your smartphone. At JustAnswers, answers come via email or text message. Both offer subscription and per-question alternatives.

Brainiacs are also welcome at ChaCha, which pays you small amounts of money for completing guide tasks. Advice runs the gamut from solving puzzles to answering questions on set subjects. Payouts can be small but steady.

Building a following on ChaCha is the hardest part, though, Mooradian says. The reason: You're listed along with 62,000 other experts. Also, ChaCha rates are pretty slim, ranging from 1 cent to 20 cents per task. Though savvy experts can make money online, don't give up your day job.

Perform a microgig

You can offer your services online at task marketplaces such as fiverr.com or Zaarly.com. At fiverr, workers fulfill tasks starting at $5 per job. Zaarly.com offers a similar service. It has launched its first storefront in San Francisco but has workers performing tasks all around the U.S.

Or, even better, head to Amazon Mechanical Turk, or MTurk.com, says Mokey. More than 200,000 tasks are listed there to make money online, with varying pay and work requirements. Once a task is completed, payments are deposited in your Amazon Payments account.

"In the worldwide marketplace of today, your skills can be used for anything, including mapping," Mokey says. However, you're also competing against people in developing nations who are willing to work for pennies, he says.

To maximize earnings, evaluate tasks carefully.

Can you make accurate predictions?

Are you good at forecasting election results or the price of gold?

Then predictive sites are for you. Introduced by the Chicago Board Options Exchange in 2008, binary options are financial contracts that let you earn money by predicting the rise or fall of financial assets. You can buy them at binary option brokers.

The website Intrade is another twist in prediction-making. You can predict hundreds of events -- such as presidential election results or Academy Award winners -- by buying shares if you think the event will happen or selling shares if you think it won't happen. If your prediction is accurate, you make money. If it isn't, you lose money.

"Some power users buy thousands of shares at a time," says Carl Wolfenden, exchange operations manager at Dublin-based Intrade.com. "Others put $50 down and hold their shares. It's a lot of fun."

You should be warned that you can lose your entire investment, Wolfenden says. On the winning side, your money-making potential is unlimited.

Take an online survey

Put your money where your mouth is by giving advertisers your opinions.

To find a job, head to websites such as MindFieldOnline.com, GlobalTestMarket.com or ZoomPanel.com, Mooradian says. They offer points and rewards for taking wide-ranging opinion surveys.

Another site, eJury.com, will pay you for being part of online mock juries, Mooradian says. EJurors are paid $5 to $10 per verdict.

The attorney prepares the case submission, which consists of facts from the perspective of each party. EJury converts the attorney's case submission into an HTML format and posts it to a secure location on the website where only eJurors can access the case. EJurors review the facts of the case and answer questions, each clicking a "submit verdict" button upon completion.

But don't expect big paydays. "Surveys are good for making pocket change," Mooradian says. "Payouts are only pennies to a few dollars per survey."

Asian American YouTube stars sidestep Hollywood

For young Asian Americans aspiring to enter the entertainment industry, Hollywood has long seemed like a distant, unattainable dream.

But recently, many Asian Americans have found a shortcut to success in the entertainment business: YouTube.

Vivian Vo-Farmer, an 18-year-old living in Seattle, is one of a growing cadre of Asian American YouTube stars who have leveraged the popularity of her channel on the video sharing platform for profit, and used it as a springboard into other business ventures.

“I never once wanted to be a Youtuber,” Vo-Farmer said in an email interview. “I never pictured myself as a super interesting person that people would take the time to watch.”

Vo-Farmer says it was her prominence on other social media platforms like Instagram and Tumblr that helped kickstart her YouTube success, when other girls requested her to do beauty and fashion advice videos.

And where limited roles for Asian Americans could stifle a career in Hollywood, she says her ethnicity has been an asset on Youtube.

“I do think [being Vietnamese-American] is somewhat of an advantage,” she said. “A lot of my audience is Vietnamese/Asian so a lot of times they can really relate to me in ways such as body types to more personal aspects like similarities in upbringings.”

According to a study by GLAAD, only four percent of all the main characters on broadcast television in 2013-2014 were Asian. But YouTube has elevated the voices of people who were underrepresented in mainstream media and led them to become celebrities in a different way.

Dr. Lei Guo, an assistant professor at the Boston University College of Communication, & Lorin Lee analyzed the language used by Asian YouTubers in their paper, “The Critique of YouTube-based Vernacular Discourse: A Case Study of YouTube’s Asian Community.”

According to Guo’s and Lee’s article, some Asian YouTubers use “mainstream stereotypes about their own community to produce entertaining videos that worked to identify with and retain their Asian audience and fans.”

In other words, their portrayal of Asian stereotypes worked to their advantage by helping Asian viewers relate to them.

One example is Ryan Higa, a Japanese-American from Hawaii, who started out in high school posting videos of himself lip-syncing to songs (since removed due to copyright violations) and moved on to produce low budget sensations like “How to be Ninja,” “How to be a Nerd,” and “How to be a Gangster.” Known by his YouTube name, nigahiga, Higa later created “Movies in Minutes,” which are parodies of popular movies. Now, he also has his own production company. As of February 2016, he has over 16 million subscribers on his Youtube channel.

Another Asian-American YouTube star who rose to prominence due to this digital platform is Timothy DeLaGhetto, also known as Traphik, a YouTube rapper and comedian of Thai descent. Aside from making YouTube videos, he has been featured on MTV’s Wild ‘N Out, an improvisational comedy/hip-hop show hosted by Nick Cannon.

The path to fame of 28-year-old fellow Vietnamese-American Michelle Phan is something of a template for Vo-Farmer. Phan is the daughter of two Vietnamese immigrants who struggled financially in their first years in America. Now she’s a beauty mogul who founded her own cosmetics business, ipsy, in 2011, and was recently featured in Forbes. She has over eight million subscribers on YouTube and is currently working on finalizing her graphic novel, which will launch online in March.

Vo-Farmer says her family was very supportive of her non-traditional career aspirations. She recalls that the DSLR camera she used to make her videos look more professional was a gift from her uncle and aunt.

“I would show my mom my video as soon as I uploaded it to share with her what I had been working on all day,” she said. “She knew I loved doing it, so I felt like she was just happy to see me happy. No one ever told me I was wasting my time or doubted me which I’m so grateful for.”

In order to keep her channel alive and have a steady income, she and her manager work out deals with prominent brands to feature them in her videos.

Vo-Farmer said these kinds of sponsorships are the key to having YouTube as a full-time job.

She has worked with L’Oreal Paris and Pantene, which have taken her from Seattle to New York City to shoot videos for the YouTube channels of those brands.

“Traveling is something I’ve always wanted to do and now it has become a regular thing and I get to call it part of my job,” she said. “Financially, I can now take a lot of weight off my mom’s shoulders and get to start off my adult life on a great note.”

Despite being comfortable and confident with her ethnic background, Vo-Farmer says she still faces some of the backlash that comes with putting one’s life in the public eye. She describes social media as a “cesspool of hatred.”

“Being on Youtube makes me extremely vulnerable to much more hatred than most people,” she said. “I put myself completely out there to millions with no makeup on my face, lookbooks where my body is being stared at for minutes, and my personal life seen through my vlogs.”

According to Vo-Farmer, some of the comments she has received on her YouTube videos range from ridicule about her body figure to disapproval because some products she uses are not cruelty-free.

“The mean comments definitely get to me at times but I’ve learned to not let them define me,” she said.

Vo-Farmer says she prefers to look at the bigger picture — she has reached a million subscribers in just about two years of being on YouTube.

“I wouldn’t let the small fraction of haters out there have the power over me to choose whether I’m happy or not,” she said. “They don’t speak for the millions of good, kind people that do support me.”

In the future, Vo-Farmer hopes to make managing her YouTube channel her lifelong career. She also wants to have her own clothing brand or become more involved in the fashion, beauty, and interior design industries.

“Youtube is a pretty unconventional job and very new,” she said. “With that comes a lot of unpredictability, but if it was up to me I would do this for the rest of my life.”

With the click of a mouse, millions of dollars are generated through video sharing websites like YouTube. Earning a piece of that pie for yourself can be pretty easy, if you know what to do and how to do it. A couple of DFW viral video personalities recently sat down to share their money-making strategies.

Fun-filled trips to places like Disneyland are the heart of Adam Rucker’s successful YouTube videos (Rucker on YouTube). His tour of the park’s new Cars Land has been seen more than a million times, and one viewer even commented, “Your excitement is contagious!”

“I like Disney,” said Rucker. “I think people appreciate that.”

Rucker has a partnership with YouTube. He could not divulge how much he has earned from the video sharing website, but it is enough to allow him to keep traveling to new cities and recording popular videos for his more than 12,000 loyal subscribers.

The money comes when YouTube is able to place more ads online, with popular videos. Users who upload videos and want to earn profits can do so by signing up for a program called Google AdSense.

Ricky Anderson II is an active YouTube personality as well (Anderson on YouTube). “Make videos every day,” he said, reading a motto inscribed on his bracelet. Years ago, he did not think much of the video sharing destination. “I was like, yeah, just a video website where people upload videos of their kittens.” Now, he puts a lot of time into his creations and offers advice to help other aspiring YouTube entrepreneurs.

“I would suggest that people make what they love,” Anderson said. “I like making funny, nerdy videos, because I like watching funny, nerdy videos.”

In other words, the first AdSense Ad that loads on your site contributes the maximum Cost per Click (CPC) for your Adsense earnings.

Let me explain; assume you are using three type of ad Units of Google AdSense on your site page – 768 x 60 px, 300 x 250 px and 600 x 160 px. Once a visitor lands onto any of the page of your site, Google sends the highest CPC Ad for the first zone of your site that loads first. That means if your 768 x 60 px ad size is the first ad which gets display first, then this will be the ad which will be having the maximum CPC compare to your other two ads on your page.

AdSense Earnings: CTR Controls The Performance

There are hundreds of blogs which claim and guide how to improve your CTR as higher CTR, the higher your earnings. This indirectly indicates that your daily traffic plays an important role in your AdSense earnings. However, this is only true till a certain extent.

Absolutely, there are no mandatory guidelines for recording high traffic. In fact, you can still improve your earnings with low traffic but higher CTR – WITH THE MIX of my previous CPC guidelines. In my personal opinion, your fist Adsense ad should be placed only at the beginning of your post/article content to fetch the maximum attention of visitors.

AdSense Revenue: Market To Unique Visitors Not For Returning Visitors

It may sound little wage but it’s true, even Google also said that officially. For Google AdSense display algo, unique visitors are more important than returning visitors or hits. Therefore, even if you have a site with low traffic but higher number of Unique Visitors, it’s a good sign. You can track the number and percentage of Unique visits by integrating any of the free analytics app like Google Analytics, Piwik etc.

You can find hundreds of other links and posts who are addressing the same issue in their own style but with almost identical type of generic tips, tricks and guidelines claiming to be very effective to improve AdSense revenue.
