Meet your Google Places Neighbor: David Barton

David is always getting groups of friends together for events around the city — “there's always something going on, so why not go check it out!” Since moving here three years ago, he’s found Harlem, Turtle Bay, and Astoria to be some of the best places to find fun activities. A new Google Places user, David took a few minutes to tell us about himself and share some of his local favorites.

I don't know if this is an ultimate insider tip, but don't be afraid to check out the outer boroughs. Astoria and Brooklyn have so much to offer both in food and activities, plus the prices are cheaper than Manhattan!

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
I would love to see Woody Allen's reviews since I think he is one celebrity that epitomizes New York City.

Do you have any secret talents?
I can eat massive amounts of food. I secretly want to enter a competitive eating contest.

What would your superpower be?
Definitely the ability to fly.

Tell us some juicy gossip.
When I was younger, I once stole a bag of Skittles from a pharmacy because my parents wouldn't buy it for me.

What’s your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Reading TextsFromLastNight on my iPhone before I fall asleep.

Have any embarrassing moments you’d like to share?
Not anything for all of Google!

What’s your favorite thing about reviewing on Places?
I love to see what other people have to say about some of my favorite places throughout New York City.

If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it be?
It would be a doodle combining aspects of my favorite sports and teams — golf, the New York Yankees and the New York Jets.

What are some of your favorite places you’ve discovered lately?

Alidoro - For lunch, Alidoro is on the expensive side, with many sandwiches ranging from $11-$14. However, I believe it's New York City's best sandwich and they are well worth the price. I highly recommend visiting Alidoro, if only just once, to experience the sassiness of this husband and wife duo as well as some of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. Order the Pinocchio: prosciutto, sopressata, fresh mozzarella, sweet roasted peppers, olive paste.

Rothmann’s Steakhouse - The highlight of the menu is obviously the steak. The Porterhouse for Two (also offered for three or four people) is a sight to behold. The dish comes out on a tray pre-sliced so you can easily take your pick of the filet or strip. When it’s presented this way, you can see what truly stands before you — a porterhouse nearly three inches thick. I can't even begin to do the flavor justice. The outside of the steak has an incredible sweet crunch to it that plays perfectly off the medium rare interior. (My stomach is growling now just thinking about it.)

8th Street Wine Cellar - The happy hour special is the highlight of this place. Daily, from 4pm-7pm, 8th Street Wine Cellar offers $5 glasses of house wine and, even better, $18 select bottles of wine. The $18 bottle deal is sure to peak anyone’s interest.

Harry’s - The inside is massive, with a stunning bar and what seems like a labyrinth of room after room filled with tables. For brunch, the menu at Harry's is somewhat similar to your typical brunch menu. However, there are some menu items with steak (of course). Prices are somewhat on the expensive side so expect to spend around $20 or so on your meal. However, brunch is accompanied by unlimited champagne for no extra charge so after a couple glasses you won't be complaining about the prices. (Note that orange juice or other mixers for the champagne is an extra charge.)

Sidecar - Sidecar is a neighborhood gem and after eating here, I can see why. Whether it's just heading over for a couple of drinks or sitting down to a meal, Sidecar delivers. It is clear that a tremendous amount of care is put into each and every dish. At around 6:30 on a Friday, Sidecar was full, but not overly crowded. However, by the time we left, there were plenty of people waiting for tables and the bar was bustling. If you're in the area and looking for a great meal with your friends, a date or your parents, I highly recommend Sidecar. The next time I'm in Park Slope I will definitely be looking to head back to try some other items on the menu.

Chiara has been in London for ten years (“Must be the money!”) and loves to spend her time “letting the inner critic out” on the capital’s unsuspecting restaurants. We spoke to Chiara about a few of the best meals she’s had in town, as well as her London insider tips.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Eat my way around the amazing food scene in London; not great for my waistline but it sure is fun!
Share your ultimate London insider tip:
If you're having a hard day's shopping on the Kings Road, go to St Luke's Church just behind the Waitrose. They have lovely grounds and you can pick up some food and have a picnic if the weather's nice.

Which celeb would you love to see reviewing on Places?
Stephen Fry; he's so witty I bet his reviews would be riveting!

What’s your favourite Google event you’ve been to and why?
The Modern Pantry brunch; it was just such a perfect start to the weekend. The Bloody Mary jugs didn't hurt either!

And what are a few of your favourite London places?

Galvin at Windows - Love this place. I’ve never had a bad meal here and they can even make me like things I didn't think I was going to e.g. liquorice panna cotta. And of course I don't need to mention the stunning views, the photos speak for themselves!

Gauthier Soho - Gauthier has stunning food and fabulous, unobtrusive service. We had the tasting menu and there wasn't a course I didn't like. Highly recommended.

Polpetto at The French House - Adored Polpetto, almost everything we ate was fantastic and the place has a great vibe. Particular standouts for me included the chili garlic prawns, the steak with white truffle sauce and the zucchini fries. The only duff note was the salad of pea, fennel and ricotta, which didn't have much fennel flavour and was fairly bland. Also getting a special shout out from me is the tiramisu, one of the best I've ever eaten but it came in a tiny shot glass, I had serious dessert envy when I saw the massive slice of flourless chocolate cake my friend got. Next time I'm getting two of the tiramisu!!

The Table - All the reviews of this place seem to be for brunch but I can confirm it is equally good for dinner. I ordered the veggie option which came fabulously presented (they're big on presentation), a huge platter of asparagus, artichoke, courgette and a duck egg. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The only slightly duff note was my strawberry and coconut cheesecake which was more like a mousse. My brother got the chocolate marquis and definitely won the dessert round. The benches you sit on are heavy (be prepared for an upper body workout when you pull them out) but I think it's more glam than its cafe name would suggest and it has a lovely courtyard if the weather gets warm again. Recommended.

Jared grew up about an hour outside NYC in “the land of apples, onions, and antique shops” and knew when he had a chance, this is where he wanted to live. Moving here about two years ago, he sees the city as full of opportunity, diversity, and the chance to try many new foods. Jared took a few minutes from finding “little nooks of culture” to chat with us about himself and his favorite finds in Queens.

Do you have any secret talents?
I'm near competition level in Mortal Kombat 9, and my Skyrim speed-runs are sure to impress the dozen or so people who know what I'm talking about.

What would your superpower be?
Flight. That way, I'd get to skip those rush-hour trains.

What’s your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Choco-tacos. No explanation needed.

Have any embarrassing moments you’d like to share?
I once fell asleep with a coffee in my hand while riding the subway. I guess I didn't drink it fast enough.

Do you have any pets?
I'd love a dog, but I don't have the heart to keep it in my apartment while I'm away. That, and my neighbors downstairs would knock my door down!

What’s your favorite thing about reviewing on Places?
I love to know that I could possibly be steering someone toward their new favorite spot. I like to get lost, and I hope that sharing my experiences on Places saves some people time.

If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it be?
A Festivus Google Doodle for the rest of us!

Share an ultimate insider tip for your city.
Don't be afraid to get off at the wrong subway stop. You're almost guaranteed to find something amazing, be it a restaurant, hobby shop, park, or person.

What are some of your favorite amazing places that you’ve found in New York?

Sake Bar Hagi - An experience you wouldn't expect from a midtown Japanese restaurant. They serve up both classic Japanese dishes and some genre-defining but oh-so-good oddities. Go with a few friends and be prepared to wait, but come hungry! Don't skip over the classics, and order a few dishes. Portions are small, affordable (cheap, even) and sharable — standard for an izakaya. Come here for the grilled yellowtail collar (Hamachi Kama) and some of their other, genre-blurring oddities. Fish sausage corn dogs? Tempura-fried tempura pizza? Count me in!

Terakawa Ramen - This underrated ramen joint is arguably one of the best in the city. The Terakawa tonkatsu bowl is a deep, rich shade of pork-fat brown, creamy and delicious. The noodles, although not made in-house, have the perfect bite and chew. Looking for something spicy? Their deep-orange Tan-Tan Men is piled high with bean sprouts, green onion, and spicy pork sausage. Stick with these two choices — you will not be disappointed. Almost overwhelmingly attentive service may make things uncomfortable at times, but all that melts away after your first bite.

Copacabana - At an average of about ten dollars a plate, this Brazilian comfort food spot is a must-visit in the Long Island City/Astoria area. The feijoada, a salty pork and black bean stew, will make your trip worthwhile. Meats from the churrascaria are fantastic, and plentiful. Do you like chicken hearts from a spit? Bacon-wrapped turkey? Various sausages and steaks? Of course you do. This is the kind of place to go to taste and new things. With buffet-style dining (a plus, in this situation) and ridiculously low "by-the-pound" pricing, the borderline awful decor is easily forgotten. Copacabana has incredible prices, and even better food. Trust me, this is a neighborhood favorite you shouldn't pass on.

Bareburger - Mmm... Ostrich burgers. Bareburger serves up burgers, fries and beers in healthy portions. The "sweet potato croqs" are a must-have- a divine union of sweet potato and parmesan cheese. Bareburger is well known for its unique meat selections (lamb, wild boar, elk, organic bison), but they offer up all of the classics, too. Bonus points for free-range, pasture raised, antibiotic, (mostly) organic, hormone free meats! Tip: Try the wild boar.

Sweet Aftron - Arguably one of the more hip bars in the Astoria area, this after-hours spot is a must-go if you’re looking for a "cool" atmosphere north of Williamsburg. The small menu is packed with excellent choices, and their mixed drinks menu makes it a destination. Try their mac & cheese — it's some of the best I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. One of the finest brunches in the neighborhood, too!

What’s your favourite thing about writing reviews on Google Places?
Getting to go to fun Google Places events! We had the most amazing breakfast at The Modern Pantry.

SUSHIsamba is opening in Heron Tower during Summer 2012 — they will do Brazilian, Peruvian and Japanese cuisines.

We’ll keep an eye out for it! And what are a few of your favourite London places?

Gauthier Soho - Upmarket feel, great atmosphere and attentive service. Amazing food created by Alexis Gauthier and his team. The tasting menu is highly recommended; in my opinion it is one of the best. Don't fill up on the amazing freshly baked breads at the start, as you will definitely need to save space for dessert, especially if it is their signature Louis XV chocolate praline — heavenly!!!

Galvin at Windows, Park Lane Hilton - We had the set lunch at Galvin at Windows in Park Lane Hilton. Pleasant service as usual and we got a window table as requested, as it was a birthday celebration — it had great views over Hyde Park. Our relatives from abroad enjoyed the experience and are still talking about it. Enjoyed the pork cheeks for mains. L'Artisan du Chocolat chocolates to end was a nice touch with the coffees. Amazing signature marshmallows — especially love the strawberry and coffee ones!!! We will definitely be going back again.

OXO Tower Wharf - Loved the place and amazing views. Attentive staff and fabulous food. Fish and chips is excellent, as well as the burger, and cheaper than other places in Gabriel's Wharf which are not as good in my opinion. Will be back to Oxo Tower again soon!!!

The Table - The Table Cafe is a lovely place, very casual with wooden benches and tables. Our NZ server was super sweet and comped us an extra dessert of ice cream; sadly the salted caramel was a bit too salty for me. But on the whole the food is great, with unusual ingredients like black potatoes. The onglet steak was delicious and not at all chewy, as this cut can sometimes be, testimony to good cooking. Also, the wood pigeon and wild rabbit were perfectly cooked — though they had undersold the wild rabbit on the menu, as it came with beautiful roasted root vegetables. Yummy, sticky toffee puddings. Will be back again very soon!

Clos Maggiore — Excellent service and good food, apart from slightly tough lamb. Waiting staff remembered mention of birthday celebrations without having to be reminded on the day — candle in dessert and happy birthday was a nice touch. Also, conservatory is lovely (and romantic), but if you sit near the fireplace you get a cold blast of air. Overall, enjoyed another great meal at Clos Maggiore and we will be visiting again soon.

Philip has made New York City his home since 1985. When not working in publishing, he’s traveling all over the five boroughs in search of great baklava or a good book. Philip took a few minutes to let us in on his favorite places and insider tips for the city.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Ride my bicycle, read noir-ish mystery novels and hang out with my wife and teenage son.

What’s your favorite thing about sharing reviews on Places?
Letting other people know about the fabulous merchants, foodies, musicians, etc. that I enjoy.

Share an ultimate insider tip for your city.
If you're in a cab trying to get somewhere quickly, stay away from the avenues in the center of the city, hang on the margins (like West End Avenue).

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
The Mao Marathon, a reading Google co-sponsored last December. I first met Esther there and wrote about the memorable occasion on my blog, The Great Gray Bridge, where I talk about music, culture, events, and odd moments in the city.

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
I'd like to know where Al Pacino eats Sunday breakfast, when he's in the city.

What would your superpower be?
Speed reading.

Have any embarrassing moments you’d like to share?
Occasionally thinking I recognize someone, saying hello, and then finding out I'm mistaken.

If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it look like?
It'd be a doodle with a book, a binding and words tumbling off the page and streaming out of the books. Maybe there would also be some readers looking on in amazement.

After 27 years in New York City, what are some of your current favorite places?

Broadway Restaurant - Friendliest diner I've been to in NYC. Tony at the counter makes you feel right at home. It's my regular weekend breakfast place.

The Greek Restaurant - Best Greek food in Manhattan and fair prices. Avgolemo soup is superb, as is the gyro, Greek fries, grilled fish, and their fresh, fresh salads.

The Living Room - Excellent vibe to this mostly acoustic room, though they also know how to rock out here. No heavy hand about drink minimum, though one is expected to order a drink per set. I love this mellow listening room.

Bluestockings - A really good politically-minded bookstore. Terrific stock and well laid out with good lighting.

Introducing our Paris Community Manager, Raphaelle Thibaut

Bonjour à tous!

In any big city, on any street corner, at any moment, we can see something that can make our day. But especially in Paris...

I’m Raphaëlle, a 27-year-old Parisian, and I’m delighted to join the team of Community Managers for Google Places – and to be your representative in Paris! Social media gives us a unique opportunity to talk about our city, discover what we love about it and share it with the world...

My love affair with Paris began 11 years ago when my fascination led me here — to Sorbonne University. I instantly fell in love with this stylish city that still surprises me every day and drove me to become a real hot spots seeker.

I trained for 17 years as a classical musician in a strict academy before devoting myself completely to my other passion, the Internet. My digital background is in advertising as it associates to social media strategy. As a community manager, I’ve freelanced for several brands like Adidas and worked for some ad agencies like DDB° Paris and Les Gros Mots.

Nope, Paris still didn’t get the sea. It’s just said that I’m funny on a beach.

Oh yeah, and I spend about 32 hours a day decoding the web via Google+ and Twitter and hundreds of tech-junkie blogs and sites...

Still, music is more than ever a part of me today — you can find my most recent compositions on SoundCloud. Given that I’m surrounded by music, I am very sensitive to the acoustic environment of a place. That brings me to another reason why I love Paris: its aural atmosphere is just magic — very lively, but not too noisy!

Here are some spots you’ll find me in Paris:

The Saint-Martin Canal. It’s a picturesque place and a pretty quiet corner to take a walk, ride a bike, have a picnic or eat in cosy restaurants as La Cantine de Quentin. Cafés and quirky boutiques also flank the water-and-iron footbridges, like Artazart or very colorful Antoine et Lill store.

Le Mansart, Pigalle quarter. South Pigalle is the Parisian hipster nightlife place, and Le Mansart is totally part of it. It’s packing the coolest crowd of the quarter, playing table football and drinking cheap beer. And if the evening seems to short for you, you can extend it thanks to the nearby Carmen, a very refined and high-end club.

I also love pandas, and homemade-Sunday-night meals.

Le Nanashi, Marais quarter. A healthy, Japanese-inspired creative eatery, including a selection of one of the best bentos in Paris. Helpful after too much cheap beer (see above). I guess that’s why they most often see me on Sunday for the brunch...

Le Batofar, 13th quarter. Early in the morning, after hours of fun, you realize that it’s a boat when you suddenly see the Seine appearing through the portholes.

The historic Marais quarter is my prime stomping ground for shopping, thanks to all its vintage boutiques and also the Saint-Ouen flea market for its very discounted and vintage clothes, shoes, antique furniture and odd objects.

And if you ask me what I love the most about Paris, I would probably say the stunning view from my apartment, at Montmartre...

I have explored Paris for many years but I know I still haven’t discovered half of the places out there...

Writing Restaurant Reviews with an Expert: Austin’s Rob Balon

Editor’s Note: On Google Places, anyone can express their inner food critic by sharing thoughts on their favorite local restaurants with the world. But some reviews rise above the rest, and so we’ve sought out professional food writer and restaurant critic Rob Balon, of Dining Out with Rob Balon in Austin, Texas, to give us some pointers on how to write a review that will leave a reader’s tummy rumbling and mouth watering.

How did you get started writing about food?
I grew up in a food-centric family. Meals in my house were events and by the time I was a teenager, I had developed quite a palate along with what would be a lifelong passion for fine cuisine.

Yet, my entry into the world of writing about food was almost entirely by accident. As the head of a market research firm in Austin, I conducted a study for a local radio station in an effort to improve their ratings. One thing we found was that a substantial number of their listeners enjoyed dining out. So, I suggested that the station launch a restaurant show.

It was never my intention to become the host of said show, but that's what occurred. Soon after I was also on tv and writing a website. And that was ten years ago!

Which Austin chefs and restaurants do you think are most exciting at the moment?
I am very partial to Bryce Gillmore's Barley Swine and David Bull's Congress. I also love Ben Huselton's work at the Paggi House and Paul Qui's Uchiko. And I am rapidly becoming an admirer of David Burton Sanchez in his transition from Apatite to Soleil. You can't ignore Josh Watkins at The Carillon or the inimitable Elmar Prambs at Trio. Plus who would have thought Ben Nathan could ramp up that fast at the new Cafe Blue?

If you're visiting a restaurant for the first time, what are the key things you look for?
I typically visit a restaurant several times before filing a review. On the first visit, I tend to look for operational as well as cuisine issues, such as:

Do dishes appear in a timely manner?
Does the server really understand the menu and can she/he convey it to the customer?
How do the front and back of the house work: is there a sense of accommodation and efficiency?
Is the food fresh and properly prepared?
Are the tastes and textures integrated and working in a pleasing fashion?

And perhaps most importantly, how are the soups? Show me a great soup and I'll almost always show you a great restaurant.

What tips would you give Google Places reviewers to help them make their reviews more mouthwatering?
My best suggestion would be to convey your sense of appreciation and enthusiasm of particular dishes with language that is evocative. For example, I could say that the linguine was “well cooked with a nice sauce” or I could say that it was “exquisitely prepared and appropriately al dente with a sweet sauce redolent of the best of Naples.”
Great cooking is about passion and - not coincidentally - so is great food writing. The best reviews evoke a gut-level reaction: they make me hungry!

Barry has lived within the same three-mile radius his whole life, but regularly drops into Central London to “be surrounded by interesting things.” We chatted to our latest featured user about the places he loves in the capital and nearby.

Do you have a secret talent?
Is procrastination a talent? I will have to look it up and see, later.

What do you like about reviewing on Places?
When a place is something special (or maybe awful) I like to take the time to let others know. Starring a listing on my Android phone then writing the review on a PC with a full size keyboard is pretty neat too.

Ms. Cupcake - I have never been to the shop, but I have had their cupcakes at the Animal Aid Christmas Fayre and at a market they were in. Literally the best cakes I have ever had and the staff are so nice. Love their hats too.

Beatroot Vegetarian Café - Wholesome food in great portions and at a good price. Their vegan cottage pie is amazing. I was visiting London on my own so enjoyed the laid back attitude here, I could just sit back and enjoy my food. Basically, you pick a box and they will stuff it full with whatever you want from the options available (of which there are many). The vegan sausage rolls are well worth trying.

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary - I love this place so much — lots of rescued animals, large fields, a petting area and a vegan burger bar. When I visited they had a couple of six week-old piglets who followed one of the volunteers like a dog. I arranged to have my induction as a volunteer the next weekend!

The Pilgrims Korai - Great Indian and they’re more than happy to help me find the vegan items on the menu. I explained I needed some help picking items that are OK for vegans, the staff member quickly said, "So no meat, dairy or eggs" which was a very good start. We went through the menu and picked out some things I wanted that were vegan. I had never had Dansak before but some colleagues recommended it. I tried it and it has become my new favourite dish. The only down side is I regularly get Korai withdrawal and have to go again!

Ava was drawn to New York City by the energy of neighborhoods like Chelsea, Greenpoint, and SoHo. Eight years ago she moved here to fulfill a childhood dream and to be inspired by the constant evolution of the city. She took a break from food and art adventures to share a few of her favorite places.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to travel. Whether it's to China or Chinatown, every little trip is an adventure to me. I also am an illustrator and enjoy capturing the oddities of the world in my sketchbook (as I see them, anyway!)

Do you have any secret talents?
I’ve been known to do some aerialist dancing on my silks.

Share an ultimate insider tip for your city.
Walk as far and as long as you can. You don't want to miss a minute of NYC (or get disoriented) by taking the subway -- unless of course, it's from Battery Park to Harlem (but even so: oh the things you would see if you spent that day walking!).

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
The Mermaid Inn #BrewsandBivalves one. It is the only one I have been to, but I imagine it would be hard to top... dozens of Kumamoto oysters!??!?! DOZENS.

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
Dan Witz, famous New York street artist... I am sure he knows of places that you wouldn't dream of!

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Eating ice cream in a hot tub under the full moon.

What would your superpower be?
To be able to get eight hours of sleep in one hour.

If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it look like?
Pretty damn good, I am an illustrator!

What are some of your favorite places in New York City that keep you coming back?

Union Square Greenmarket - This market never fails to astonish me with it's great produce, sheer and constant variety, and amazing prices. They always beat all the grocery stores in price and the quality is heads and tails better. Best of all, it's year round. YAY GREENMARKET! It brings some bountiful sunshine to this urban jungle.

Nhà Tôi - Love love LOVE their Summer Rolls—every last one is awesome. The Veggie Pho is huge and, um, pho-nominal. The Bahn Mi are all impressive (the seared basa fish rocks). There are no misses on this menu as far as I am concerned.

B’s Bikes - They are awesome here: never snobby and so helpful and accommodating. They do top notch work and are totally honest. I’ll go out of my way to bring my bike to B's.

Pies-N-Thighs - Biscuits! Clap your hands for these Biscuits! I love their brunch and their atmosphere. Be prepared to wait on the weekend for a table, but it's so worth it.

Saxon + Parole - Beautiful space to sip very uniquely, fine-tuned quaffs. They make their own tonic and their OWN WHISKEY! With graceful yumminess, this is a winner.

Meet your Google Places Neighbor: Jenny Meyer

Jenny was born and raised a Londoner, but still enjoys discovering new places — she even tried out Japan for a couple of years! We spoke to this week’s featured user about Victorian cemeteries, Swedish sweets and the downside of London travel.

What do you like about reviewing on Places?
Getting to share something good, that people might not have found otherwise.

Tell us your top London tip:
Walk if you can. Also, travelling by bus is pretty good for helping you get a sense of place — you get to see where things are so much more than by taking the tube.

If you could have any secret power, what would it be?
Flight. Or failing that, teleportation. I like to travel and my commute isn't getting any cheaper...

What’s been your favourite Places event so far?
Oh, tricky. Probably the Brewdog tasting, because it was new to me and definitely prompted me to try (and enjoy!) a few new beers I wouldn't have otherwise.

And what are your five favourite London places?

Nunhead Cemetery - Like someone tipped a graveyard over a forest. It doesn't have any famous graves like Highgate Cemetery does, but it's far nicer in terms of places to go for a walk — all giant trees and overgrown ivy and brambles. It's also a great place for foraging, mostly blackberries and elderflower, but some damsons too. There's a great view from the top, clear through to St Paul's Cathedral.

Union Chapel - One of my favourite venues in London. Lovely acoustics that really bring out the best in musicians. Friendly staff, nice bar, cheerful suppliers of tea. It's not a bad idea to bring a cushion — pews are not designed for comfort! And get there early, since the entrance can be a little disorganised and the seating is unassigned.

Gosh! Comics - Good selection — a reasonable amount of manga, a good lot of indie and alternative, and masses of the Marvel and DC. They have really, really good staff, who are helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and not patronizing. Slightly sad to see it move from in front of the British Museum, but this location is better.

SugarSin - Excellent! So good to find a swedish sweet shop. It has a great selection of sours (giant fizzy cola bottles, that kind of thing) and licorice/salmiak flavour sweets. It also sells Fraser and Finnish sweets and some nice adult-equivalent-of-kids’-sweets chocolates. And lakerols! It does have a reasonable amount of more familiar boiled sweets as well.

“New York isn’t perfect but there is no other city that I can call home,” says Brian. Born and raised in New York City, he’s still finding new places to see and different activities to do every day. He breaks up the routine of the work week with frequent trips around neighborhoods like the Lower East Side and Chinatown.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to explore the city on my own two feet until near exhaustion. I find it particularly relaxing to stroll on the West Side Promenade that overlooks the Hudson River and our New Jersey neighbors.

What’s your favorite thing about reviewing on Places?
I love the ease and simplicity of the review process. You don’t have to share a whole lengthy story about your experiences, just highlight insights, information, and tips. I like being able to share my opinions about an establishment that, hopefully, helps others to make informed decisions within the community. Reading reviews on Google Places has also introduced me to more venues, which I am very excited about visiting.

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
It’s difficult to choose just one! The “Dim Sum Brunch” at Nom Wah Tea Parlor paid homage to my roots. I’ve had Dim Sum numerous times growing up with family and friends, and the meal with the Google crew was no different: great flavors, nice ambiance, and awesome company. Google Places also really knows how to throw a party and it was fun trying some of the best pizza in NYC on the Google Pizza Bus. Most recently, I’d have to say the Grand Evening tour with the Municipal Art Society of New York at Grand Central. This event quickly became a favorite when I got to see the main concourse from a completely new view, walking through a glass corridor between the huge windows at the terminal.

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
I really enjoy going to all-you-can-eat buffets. It’s not always the best quality or healthiest option, but I love the abundance and instant gratification of having food on my plate. I like sampling and indulging in a variety of cuisines to my heart’s content.

What would your superpower be?
I have always wanted more than one superpower: the ability to control time and telekinesis. It would be amazing if I could revisit precious moments and fun experiences in my life. Out of curiosity, I would also visit the future to compare the changes between the past, present, and future.

What are some of your local favorites?

New Malaysia Restaurant - I love the food: everything is tasty and nicely presented. I would recommend the roti, which is basically a pancake, and goes very well with the curry sauce that's a little spicy with small chunks of potatoes and a piece of chicken. Also, try the fried pearl noodle. These short fat noodles sorta look like worms covered in a dark gravy, but they’re so delicious. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. You might have to share tables with other people depending on how crowded the place gets.

Shake Shack - Attention all burger lovers! Shake Shack has great burgers and shakes! I love the food and it’s worth waiting in the long lines.... go with company so you have someone to talk with. Inside tip: if you’re only getting one of the cold treats, there is a separate line to save you some time.

Joe’s Pizza - My friend told me to check out Joe's Pizza and I'm happy I did. I really love their pizza! Everything was oven fresh and delicious. The service was quick and the employees were all very friendly. It's a very simple place, nothing fancy, but definitely one of the best places to grab a few slices.

Introducing our Dublin Community Manager, Brian Herron

Hello all,

Anyone here into boxing? Ok, me neither. But I’m going to indulge in a pugilistic metaphor anyway. Remember when Dublin, backed with foreign investment, swaggered into the new millenium like a prize-fighter entering the ring – all lean and coiled and rippling with confidence? Me too. Twelve years later, rope-a-doped by the banking crisis, the city’s all battered and bruised and nose-bleedy. But not quite out for the count yet. Weirdly, Dublin is that little bit more exciting for having taken a few lumps.

For a tiny city on the edge of Europe, Dublin now offers better drinking, dining and doing experiences than ever before. People who are into food are starting businesses, serving-up what they enjoy cooking and making a modest but fulfilling living from it. The music and visual art scene here is booming; instead of waltzing into jobs with multinationals, kids finishing college are picking up guitars and synths and paint brushes and are competing on a creative par with our neighbours in the UK. And the growing circle of social media nuts, including local bloggers and twitterati, are linking in with these great scenes, generating a real sense of excitement about where we’re headed.

My new role with Google Places is to help share all those things that are great about this city, its surroundings and what makes us unique.

Community-minded: this is me teaching a disadvantaged
young puppy how to play keyboard like a boss

My background is in new media and journalism. I’ve freelanced for the Irish Medical Times, RTE and The Small Print among many others and I worked for the OFFSET creative festival. Last year, I co-founded MOB Rule Media Ltd. with a friend of mine to publish a print and online gig and event guide called The Stripe. I also run summer camps and workshops at Fighting Words, a creative writing centre for children and young adults.

I’m a Dublin native – if we’re counting Skerries as Dublin – and like most Irish people, I’m well travelled. I’ve lived in Germany (where I was a butcher. Sort of – ask me about it sometime), Melbourne (where I house-shared with a dancer, a pro-poker player, a webmaster for x-rated sites and mandolin player). I’ve spent time in Chicago (where I was so poor I used to do a $10 weekly food shop at Dominick’s that mostly consisted of penne pasta and ragu) and Stockholm (where I learned how to survive in the wilderness in -20°C).

It was very, VERY cold here: But I still ate better in the Scandinavian wilds than I did in Chicago.

I think what Dublin does best is character. And our pubs and restaurants are starting to reflect that again. Living right on George’s St, as I do, means that I spend a lot of time in Hogan’s, Grogan’s and the Long Hall. Whelan’s is still the king of live music venues but the Twisted Pepper keeps improving as a gig spot (although I still don’t know how to dance to dub-step). 3FE keeps me in a constant state of caffeine dementia, I eat far too many Lolly and Cooks’s sausage rolls than is good for me and No Name for Sunday brunch and Bloody Marys is still a winner.

Saturday lunch is usually at one of the stalls in Meeting House Square and since I get (a little too) excited by reasonably-priced, great food and decent beers, I’m obviously a huge fan of L. Mulligan Grocer in Stoneybatter. If it’s sunny, driving home to Skerries for a pint and some chowder at Stoops always seems like a good idea.

But hey! Everyone’s Dublin is different. And I’m sure you have your own favourite spots.

And what are your five favourite London places?

Bar Hairdressing - Bar Hairdressing is staffed by three hairdressers and offers cut, colours and consultations with a friendly smile, some banter and depending on what you like to drink, even a cheeky beer or glass of wine. I've been going here for a long time, and I've never had a bad cut, and have always felt like I have got value for my money. Discover a little gem and treat yourself.

Eat Tokyo - Possibly the best Japanese restaurant I have been to in London, Eat Tokyo delivers a proper and authentic dining experience. You get all the classic Japanese meals like bento boxes, teriyaki, katsu and amazing sushi. The value for the size and quality of the meals is fantastic. I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of the lunchtime special which is a fabulous £5 lunchtime takeaway box including chicken or salmon teriyaki, a smattering of pickles, rice and miso soup. Thoroughly recommended for either a takeaway or a proper sit down meal, the staff are courteous, friendly and help make it a great place to eat.

Giant Robot - From the ashes of Match EC comes Giant Robot. It's a relatively small bar but they make maximum use of space and the decor helps maintain a relaxed atmosphere. While the prices aren't super cheap they are okay, and the quality of cocktails and food is pretty good. The food is mostly American-style burgers, meatballs and sliders (like a meatball in a bun). I had the slider selection and enjoyed it immensely. Would I go again? Yes, and I have recommended it to others.

The Barnsbury - The Barnsbury sits on Liverpool Road and despite its proximity to Upper Street, I was pleased to see it wasn't rammed to the gills. The pub itself is pleasant and light, it serves decent grub and has a good range of beers, including Camden Brewery Beers. It also puts on regular nights with various up-and-coming acoustic musicians — I was lucky enough to see Harpist Jharda Walker playing and that was then followed by Joshy O'Connor. While it's not the cheapest pub in the world, I thought it was decent value for money, and it was obviously popular as the locals would pop in and out throughout the time I was there. Recommended for a chilled afternoon or to watch the rugby.

The Breakfast Club - Tucked on a small side street near Spitalfields Market, The Breakfast Club serves a wide variety of quality breakfasts all day. The clientele is a mix of Shoreditch trendies, the odd banker and small company meetings.The staff are amiable and always on top of the service. The food is pretty good, but it can vary every time you go. I’ve been twice and had some ace pancakes, with good crunchy bacon and lashings of maple syrup, and on another occasion I had a slightly disappointing Eggs Benedict. Overall it’s good and I’d recommend it for a quiet breakfast or casual meet up. It’s also the gateway to the Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town, a quaint little bar serving cocktails via a quirky entrance.

Since arriving in the city three years ago, Candace hasn’t stopped moving. Even her daily commute takes her from Brooklyn all the way to the Bronx where she teaches. She chose New York because of its ability “to support insomniacs who can't drive,” and is constantly jumping on mass transit to explore every borough. We managed to catch her for a few minutes and hear about her desire to learn and discover new things.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I wear out my MoMA and BAM memberships. I mix it up between opera, experimental dance and theater performances (I love Movement Research), and the free summer arts scene. You can also find me at bespoke bars talking to the bartenders about their craft. At home, I love to cook with my community supported agriculture (CSA), host coffee cuppings, and experiment with new cocktails. I love learning new things and often take classes at Trade School and Skillshare, go to meetups, and check out bookstore events.

Do you have any secret talents?
I can teach people how to tie bow ties on crowded rush-hour trains.

Care to share an ultimate insider tip for your city?
Go to the beach during the summer. My favorite beach is at (the west side of) Jacob Riis Park. It's a good idea to check out as many of the beaches as you can and troll private ones until you find your spot.

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
Midnight Brunch! I met cool people and had some of the best caipirinhas I've ever tasted. Oh, and the passion fruit mousse was to die for.

What would your superpower be?
I've always wanted to be able to freeze time like Zach Morris on Saved By the Bell.

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose?
Marcel the Shell.

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
I'm not guilty about pleasure. New York suits me.

Touché. Where are some of your favorite local spots?

Outpost - I'm a regular at this place. They probably have the best coffee house atmosphere I've experienced in New York. You'll find me at the bar chatting up baristas and other regulars, sipping a beer (new taps!) and reading comic books for hours on end.

The Randolph at Broome - This is one of my go to bars. The happy hour is OUT OF CONTROL (half off until 8 pm!), their house bourbon is Four Roses, the drinks are mixed well, it's a cute coffee shop during the day....I could go on and on. My favorite drinks are the Old Roman and the Manhattan.

Metropolitan Opera Associates - Here's my Met tradition: I buy family circle weekday tickets for $25 and arrive about 40 minutes early. After the trek to the seventh floor, I order house champagne and an overpriced treat from the bar and eat on the balcony area that overlooks the restaurant and lower floors. Opera glasses are necessary at this point to people-watch effectively (and believe me, you'll want to people-watch). This place introduced me to Richard Wagner and Philip Glass.

Brooklyn Academy of Music - This is one of my favorite places in the world. BAM gives a diverse audience amazing access to thought-provoking art. For tickets cheaper than spending a night at a bar, I've seen performances and films that have changed how I think about the world. I became an opera, film, and theater-lover at BAM. I re-up my membership every year.

Bed-Vyne Wine - This place is more than a wine store - it helps our community thrive. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the wine selection is well-curated and they deliver. Where this store goes above and beyond is their community presence. Every month or so, they partner with local businesses to host affordable tastings, pairing dinners and other events. I've met a lot of locals at these events and found new stores to frequent. They remember my face (and my tastes) and give me a cute tote bag when I need to carry wine to a party. Go here!

Amanda only moved to London for university 18 months ago, but she already knows her way around the city’s shopping scene. When she isn’t updating Twitter and Tumblr, or eating out in her neighbourhood of Covent Garden, she can be found “sporadically” updating her fashion blog or reading novels. Amanda took some time out between classes to share what she’s discovered about London so far.

Share your top London tips with us:
This might sound ridiculous but get a London Tube Map shower curtain from Stanfords bookstore in Covent Garden for an easy reference before you leave the house! Or always have a Tube map handy. The TubeStatus iPhone app is also incredibly useful to check for delays.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Probably a meal of butter chicken, chicken wings, saag paneer (diced cottage cheese with spinach) and naan from the Punjab restaurant in my neighbourhood. Or maybe a sushi buffet...

What’s been your favourite Google Places event so far?
Burrito Bonanza at Benito's Hat! Free burrito, nuff' said.

Mmm, agreed! And what are your five favourite London places?

Dukes Hotel - Dukes has some of the best hotel service I've ever experienced — staff remember you and your name at the reception, and turn-down is impeccable. The bar is a must in the late evening. The toiletries are by REN, which is an amazing line. I highly recommend staying a night or two even if you live in London!

Wahaca - Wahaca's very affordable, and you feel healthy with the amount of vegetables (I'm an omnivore, through and through) they sneak into your food. Pick from the street food dishes! Favourite picks: pork pibil tacos, chicken guajillo tostadas and black bean and cheese quesadillas. Yum. Cocktails are served with a generous hand of booze — try the hibiscus mojito!

Nordic Bakery - CINNAMON BUN — if the tray's not near to full, order an elderflower cordial and wait for the next batch because fresh cinnamon buns from Nordic Bakery are to die for.

Woo Jung - This is the best place for ultimate Korean comfort food — the Yuk Gae Jang (spicy beef soup) and the Sundubu jjigae (tofu stew) are the best items on the menu, while the lunch menu always promises affordable meals!

Harvey Nichols - Harvey Nichols has the best selection of high street and high-end fashion — I'm always impressed by the items selected by the buyers! While not many people would pick HN over Harrods or Selfridges, my priority when I shop is really to look at beautiful clothes. At HN, the store is carefully curated like a museum.

Harrison moved to New York City after college with a dream to work in television. Five March Madnesses and many brunches later (how he measures time), he’s made the city his home. Harrison likes to split his time between Chelsea, the East Village, and the Lower East Side trying new restaurants. He took a few minutes to share some fun facts about himself and his favorite haunts in the city.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
BBQ! I love enjoying my roof deck all year long! I've been known to pick up a pig from a local restaurant, make some Katz’s Delicatessen hot dogs, and have everyone over before heading out in the neighborhood. And if it's not being done on my roof, I love checking out the best bbq the city has to offer. I love exploring the city and finding new fun and delicious places that are always popping up. I’m always down for some new fried chicken, or a good beer on tap.

Do you have any secret talents?
Oh I can dominate some rock paper scissors (the key is trusty Rock). Also connect four. You want some of this?

Do you have any pets?
No, but I want a dog badly. Or two dogs. It just isn't feasible in the city. One day puppies...one day!

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
Two words: Nacho Bus. What an extremely fun experience and I'm not even talking about the tequila! I had a terrific time tasting nachos throughout the city. It was a great way to meet terrific people and learn the basics of Google Places and the awesomeness of the Chromebook. I've since been back to three of the stops on the great Nacho Bus tour since then.

What would your superpower be?
I'd have to go for super speed. Think of all the reviews I could write!

If you were going to draw the Google Doodle, what would it look like?
I bleed orange and blue, which in New York means Knicks and Mets, but to me it means the Florida Gators (where I went to school). It would be a no brainer to make the Google Doodle in orange and blue with a little help from Albert and Alberta the Gator mascots. (Get it? Allie-gator.)

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Veniero's Pastry's cannolis. I had one last night and I want one now. The best I've had hands down.

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
Someone old school NYC! Maybe Walt Clyde Frazier letting me know where to grab one of his spectacular suits. Oh, or Joe Namath in a fur coat telling me where to grab a beer.

Haha, what’re some favorite places you’d head to after getting decked out in one of those spectacular suits?

Strand Books - The best classic bookstore ever. New, used, classics, you name it they've got it. The Strand 40 is their selection of classics that everyone should pick up once in their life. The fiction specials are always terrific, and their author autographed copies are like finding treasure. It's easy to get lost, but it's also easy to ask for help from the really knowledgeable and friendly staff. I heard one time that you have to pass a literature test to work there, but that could have just been someone yanking my chain. The staff selections are to be taken seriously. Oh, also when you check out, donate a dollar and plant a tree.

Chelsea Thai - The bomb. I've eaten here more than anywhere else in NYC. I work around the Piers and make it a point to order this good stuff twice a week. It’s always good and fast. I go for the tamarind chicken or the chicken pad thai. I've completed the buy 10 get one free cards at least four times at this point. It's just what I need to get me through the day. Cheap, friendly and yummy. Don't forget your sriracha!

Horseshoe Bar - Listen. Go here and make friends. It's as cool a place as there is. Put some money in the jukebox, grab a pitcher, and enjoy yourself. It’s what every bar should be. If you're there long enough, ask for a bag of popcorn or some Cheetos from the bartender.

Zum Schneider - Big Authentic Beers. I live down the street and this is a no brainer. If you want a German beer in NYC, this is your place. This is where German expats go for a drink, or two, or five. The waitress are lovely, and strong, (the beers are huge). They have normal pours, but when on Avenue C/Germany... well you know the saying. I’ve eaten everything here from sausage plates and porkchops to the German breakfast and they’re all terrific. Ask for the beers that are not on the menu, they’re the only spot in the USA that serves a couple beers they keep on tap. Oh also: Oktoberfest. Live German band. Lederhosen. Need I say more?

Destino - Check out the set menus, two courses for £9.99 usually. Amazing tapas. One of my favourite restaurants.

Monkey Island Hotel - Beautiful historic hotel located on Monkey Island, great for special occasions and they are always upgrading their facilities. It’s a treat to visit.

Queen Adelaide - Great choice of food, and the pub is big enough for you to always get a seat. Beer garden and friendly staff makes this an easy choice for a peaceful pint or meal.

Pane & Pasta - They do great sandwiches and pasta, but I love the cooked breakfast with a cuppa. Really friendly staff always make me feel welcome. Ulas and Hakan are great guys as are the staff they employ.

Jolly Gardeners - This was my go to place for Sunday lunch when I lived round the corner. It has a great interior, lovely cider and board games to while away the time.

Lured to New York by a change of scenery and a new job, Josh and his family are still exploring and finding new places to play. When the weather’s nice they usually end up in one of the parks in the city. In the evenings you can find him at a tech event or working on a web application around traveling social objects. Josh took a few minutes between work and play to share what’s captivated him in NYC.

Do you have any secret talents?
An uncanny knack for pop-culture trivia.

What would your superpower be?
Telepathy. That way when I ask my better-half where she wants to go, and she says "Wherever," I can see what place she secretly wants to go shopping at.

Share an ultimate insider tip for New York City:
There's too much to do in New York! When see someone post that review or recommendation and I think to myself: " I HAVE to go there," I immediate log it so the next time I'm in the neighborhood, I've got a ready-made short-list of places to pick from. Tip: Use the "Save for Later" feature in Google Places.

Do you have any pets?
Two very odd cats. A brother and sister named Pink and Floyd.

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
Ice Cream.

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
Burgers and Bourbon at Idle Hands Bar. It was a good lesson in Bourbon history and great to sample different kinds. Plus, burgers.

Have any embarrassing stories you’d like to share?
Plenty, but they aren't age-appropriate for this blog. Find me on the streets of New York and we can compare stories.

If you could see any celebrity’s reviews on Places, who would you choose and why?
Neil Patrick Harris recently live-tweeted a dinner in New York. I’d probably like to see his because he's a genuine fan of good food. I'm not a fan when a PR team posts celebrity content. Real deal or no deal.

What’re some favorite places you’ve discovered in your first year in New York City?

Luke’s Lobster - Believe the hype. This is the best lobster roll in the city and perhaps the planet. The staff is friendly too. I’m also a big fan of the shrimp roll.

Boka/Bon Chon - The Korean fried chicken haunts my dreams. Get the booze-filled watermelon too; thank me later.

The Half-Pint - Get an imposing tower of beer to park on the table and order some crazy fried-cheese appetizers as they are tasty too. This is a great place for an after-work happy hour or to ride out a freak NYC hurricane (true story, I know a guy who did).

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - I've lived in Texas and take my BBQ seriously. When the bar is set by places like The Salt Lick, I laughed it off that a place in New York could hold its own. I was wrong. One minute you’re walking off the 1 subway, the next, you're covered in sauce and rethinking your philosophy on food cooked in smokers. Dino is now on my top five list for BBQ. Great atmosphere, service, and food.

Central Park - I’m very fortunate that the local park I take my kid to is Central Park. I recommend walking the Mall, Bethesda Terrace, and wandering around Sheeps Meadow. There’s a number of playgrounds to take kids to and lots of scenic spots to take in the city.

Rachael moved to London five years ago to study (an MA in Fashion Journalism, darling) and spent a year “living in a box flat on Edgware Road.” Now she’s loving life south of the river, and took some time out to tell us about the London places she loves.

How do you like to spend your spare time?
Drinking real ale, hunting out the best pork pies and burgers in London, banging on about how awesome South East London is and frittering away my hard-earned money in Liberty on things I can't really afford.

Do you have a secret talent?
I can do tea towel origami - a roasted chicken is my speciality.

Never drink in a pub that isn't a Sam Smiths. And use the East London Line as much as you possibly can.

Which celeb would you love to see reviewing on Places?
Got to be Kate Moss — I can only imagine what incredible places she knows about. Queen Kate can do no wrong in my eyes.

And what are your five favourite London places?

Hob Salons - My go-to place for fantastic colour in London. Consultations are in-depth and knowledgeable but not intimidating, ensuring you always know exactly what you can expect. During colour services every step is explained and at the backwash, products used are thoroughly explained but with no hard sell. Friendly staff, great service, nice surroundings — brilliant place to get your colour refreshed or reinvented.

Freemasons Hall - My all-time favourite building in London. I'm not a freemason and don't really have a massive amount of interest in what they get up to, but this place is utterly fantastic with possibly the most incredible interior ever. You can book on tours or visit on Open House Day, but I've been lucky enough to visit during fashion week (when it's used as a venue) and wander round all the back rooms too. Star-studded ceilings, gold everywhere, symbolism everywhere from floor to ceiling — it's just breathtaking and I'd recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in architecture.

Bob Bob Ricard - I'm an art deco geek and also love to live a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget, so rare nights out at Bob Bob Ricard are always a treat. The interior is incredible — just beautiful, with amazing attention to detail — you can always tell a classy joint by the toilets, right? These are stunning, the kind of place where you try and take stealth photos on your phone before anyone else walks in. Not sure why anyone would ever say the service is bad — I've never had a bad experience with any of the pink-suited waiters, even when I've probably deserved it for being a bit on the tipsy side, shall we say? I love the food too — I'm no expert, I guess, but I've always found it fantastic. Especially the mac and cheese and toast-it-yourself crumpets at breakfast. A real treat of a place, whether you're eating or drinking downstairs in Bobby's Bar. I recommend it to everyone, including lots of American friends visiting who have adored it.

The Southampton Arms - OK, so it's fast becoming a bit of acliche for real ale-loving hipsters, but the Southampton Arms really is an amazing pub. As a dedicated drinker of real ale and consumer of pork pies, it's heaven for me. It's kind of on the small side so you might have to wait for a table but the atmosphere is well worth it. Loads of amazing ales, good range of ciders, fantastic home-made food — what more could you want, except for it to be in South London??

Mishkin’s - I'm a bit of a slave to the Russell Norman/Richard Beatty world but really, Mishkin's is so fantastic it doesn't matter who runs it. Inspired by Jewish delis in New York, the menu features old favourites like reuben sandwiches, meatballs, hot dogs and matzo ball soup, all of which are glorious. My current favourites are the macaroni cheese (to share; my god, it would kill you alone) and the cod cheek popcorn, yum. Cocktails are totally incredible and come in the most amazing array of glassware and tankards - although I did hear people had been nicking them as souvenirs, which seems a bit mean. The staff are fantastic, really nice and no hard-sell. Great interior, especially the phone booth at the back. Can't recommend Mishkin's enough really — get yourself there, then finish off with a pint at the Lyceum Tavern round the corner.

A born and bred New Yorker, Laura is still finding new places to check out and deals to find in “the best city in the world”. She loves grabbing a good cocktail with friends in neighborhoods like the East Village or the Lower East Side of Manhattan and reading fiction. Laura took time to share a few things about herself and the places around the city that she thinks are worth the trip.

Do you have any secret talents?
I can out-skate anyone who dares to race me! I used to figure skate when I was young.

What would your superpower be?
My superpower would be time travel! I would love to party at Studio 54 back in its heyday, or watch the Statue of Liberty go up for the first time.

Share an ultimate insider tip for New York City:
It's not just bars that have happy hour deals; tons of great restaurants offer stellar deals on food that are more than worth checking out. Gyu-kaku, Mermaid Inn and The Cellar at Beecher's are just a few.

What's your ultimate guilty pleasure?
I splurge on sweets when I'm indulging, and right now my guiltiest pleasure would be a slice of crepe cake from Lady M. It's pricey but so worth it!

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
I attended an apple cider dinner at the Ink 48 hotel and it combined so many lovely elements. We sipped on cocktails while taking in gorgeous views of the Hudson before sitting down with the cider-makers to a delicious dinner that paired each course with a different type of cider. Not only did I get to enjoy the food and drink, I talked to the cider makers about their craft, which added depth and meaning to the meal.

We’re sensing a theme with cocktails and sweets... What are some of your local favorites?

Pizza by Cer Té - This place is a total gem in Midtown East, with amazing quality food. The pizzas are all delicious, the soups are always perfect, and their drink selection is awesome. I love their special from 7-9pm (close) where they do two slices for $5!

The Meatball Shop - PERFECTION. Everything, from the market veggie sides to the daily special meatball, is on point 24/7. Personal favorites include the sweet tea, cleverly made with apple cider, and the ice cream sandwiches for dessert. Very affordable to boot, Meatball Shop is possibly my favorite restaurant in the city right now.

Louis 649 - Great little bar with the right ambiance for a date, catching up with friends, or meeting new people. It can get really busy so service is iffy, but the drinks and vibe are worth it. Their Tuesday night tastings/events are always fun.

Chikalicious Puddin - Beautiful, delicious desserts that are perfect for any occasion. Do a full tasting when feeling extravagant or head to the informal cafe across the street to pick up fluffy cupcakes to go. You can also perch on a tiny table to devour a chocolate covered eclair filled with soft serve ice cream. The apple sorbet is also one of the best things I have ever eaten.

Michael was born in London but spent 20 years up north and in Southern Ireland before returning six years ago. The self-confessed “compulsive worker” fills his spare time with side projects, like quarterly networking event Digital Sizzle — so he knows his way around London’s bars! We asked Michael to share the places he’s discovered in his adventures around town.

What’s your favourite thing about writing reviews for Places?
I suppose the main benefit is that you're letting other people know about hidden gems, and warning them of the bad eggs. Ten years ago, this wouldn't have been possible and you'd have to find out firsthand about any bad service. And you might go a lifetime living in London without stumbling across some of its best spots. Online reviews make everything a bit more efficient, and business owners are a bit more wary about their image, which can only be a good thing.

Do you have a secret talent?
I can play five instruments - the guitar (for 11 years now), along with the bass, mandolin, drums, and cowbell. I'm still learning the last one.

For the best view of the city, head down to Greenwich Park and go to the Royal Observatory.

What’s your favourite Google event you’ve been to and why?
I enjoyed Shoreditch Twit - a get together organised by Kate Matlock, which Google recently sponsored for Social Media Week. It was in Mason & Taylor near Brick Lane, and attracted a good crowd!

We loved it too! If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it look like?
I'd love to do one made out of moustaches. It would definitely raise awareness for Movember, the annual charity month where guys raise money by growing one.

And can you tell us about your five favourite places in London?

Bar Music Hall - Great bar for a Friday night!

The Hospital Club - Brilliant hangout for meetings and working.

Adam Street Private Members Club - Nice venue — used them for a Digital Sizzle event in November 2011, and had a great night. The only issue is the lack of mobile reception as it's underground - but they have Wi-Fi.

Casita - Best "secret bar" in east London — if you walk past and blink, you'll miss it. Tiny bar, but the cocktails and staff are great. Try the Nuclear Daiquiri — about £10 but worth it!

Bodeans - Fantastic food, very fast service!

Hello There,

A true Philadelphian is someone who is in love with the city, its food, its people, and its culture.
I’m Cheldin Barlatt Rumer: a true Philadelphian!

As a first generation American, I take pride in the fact I live, work and play in the city where this great nation was founded — Philadelphia!

I was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa and moved to Southern New Jersey with my family when I was 5 years old. While I treasured growing up in the New Jersey suburbs, I always knew I wanted to be in a big city, in the heart of all the action. I was recruited by LaSalle University in the fall of 1995 on a dual Division I field hockey and track and field scholarship. From the moment I arrived on campus, I fell in love with the city and people of Philadelphia.

As a freelance marketing executive, I spent over a decade creating grassroots marketing campaigns for my clients in the Philadelphia area. For years, I worked in conjunction with the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation (GPTMC), Philly360, Philly2night.com, 215mag.com, UpcomingEvents.com and many others in the Philadelphia tourism community.

Now as the Philadelphia Community Manager for Google Places (@cheldinbarlatt on Twitter), I am excited to engage our local community while enjoying all the amazing places found here in the heart of Philly. While I am no stranger to the ins and outs of this great city, I aim to experience the Philly scene with a fresh perspective each and every day. Whether I am attending the latest First Friday celebration or brunching at the newest restaurant, I make a point to always see and explore the best of Philadelphia in a new way.

Everyday's an adventure in the city of brotherly love, whether you are interested in arts and culture or heading to a double header with The Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, there is truly something special for everyone!

As a foodie at heart, I have fallen in love with the restaurant scene here in Philadelphia. With new restaurants popping up each day, Philadelphia has successfully secured its place as a legitimate dining destination. Whether I am looking to grab a tasty margarita and some guacamole at Xochitl Restaurant in Head House Square, or catch up with friends over my favorite Continental salad at Continental Mid-town, I can always find somewhere fun and new!

After a long week of hosting events and running campaigns, I can be found grabbing a beer with friends at Tattooed Mom, meeting colleagues for sushi at RAW or catching the latest show at The Walnut Street Theatre. Some of my other favorite places for eats throughout the city include El Vez, Cuba Libre and the Water Works Restaurant and Lounge.

When not enjoying the local dining scene, I love shopping. Some of my favorite spots to do so are in Rittenhouse Square, shops at The BelIevue and the Shops at Liberty. I try to shop a little bit every weekend and I can’t go too long without stopping by to see the great sales folks at Nicole Miller and Zara.

Philadelphia also has a rich nightlife scene, providing the local community with an array of late night options. I love dancing the night away at Zee Bar or settling in for bottle service at G Lounge.

When he isn’t writing reviews on Places, he spends his spare time taking pictures or playing the guitar. We spoke to our latest featured user about the best Japanese food in the city, candlelit museums and where to dig for comic books.

What’s your favourite thing about reviewing on Places?

If I told you, it wouldn't be a secret!

Fair enough! What would your superpower be?
Tough choice, but I'll take super speed. Not just for running fast, but for vibrating through solid objects and time travel. So dorky.

Share your ultimate London insider tip:
The Tube isn't as efficient in short distances. Get walking and enjoy the scenery.

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
Any dessert with apples. Ben & Jerry's “Apple-y Ever After” (now in their graveyard) will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sounds delish! And how about your five favourite places in London?

Gosh Comics - Great selection of graphic novels/comics/misc. others, very friendly staff and they do lots of events/signings. If you're going to spend your cash at a retailer, this is the place to do it.

British Museum - One of the best museums in the world. Daily gallery talks, lots of impressive exhibitions, free and paid lectures and other events. You can get lost in the galleries for hours and still barely scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

Cafe Japan - My favourite Japanese restaurant in London. A bit of a trek, but so worth it every time I make it. The food is delicious and fresh, prices are extremely reasonable, service is excellent.

Prince Charles Cinema - Great catalogue of old and new movies at great prices. The sing-a-longs are so much fun!

Sir John Soane's Museum - You have to visit this museum at least twice: once to really see everything it has to offer, and another time on one of the candlelight evenings. Make sure you're in line by around 4.45pm if you want to be in the first group of 60 to go in.

Jocelyn arrived to the city just last September to further her career as a writer, filmmaker and voice-over artist. Since then, she’s worked on projects all over the city, from DUMBO in Brooklyn to Chelsea in Manhattan. She says writing Google Places reviews encourages her to remember where she’s been and keep adding to that list. Jocelyn recently shared with us a few facts about herself, a few jokes and why she made New York City her new home.

What’s your favorite Google event you’ve been to and why?
It's a toss up between the How to Succeed show and the Bowling Bonanza at The Gutter. How to Succeed was great because I love theater and any event when I can see a Broadway show is a good one. I enjoyed The Gutter because I was introduced to a new favorite spot. Also, the bowling lanes themselves felt like something out of There Will Be Blood.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love improv and sketch comedy. You can either find me at one of the two Upright Citizens Brigade theaters in the city or with a my Canon 7D shooting a sketch.

Do you have any secret talents?
I'm pretty good at writing songs... as long as they are in an AA rhyme scheme... and don't have to make sense.

Have any embarrassing moments you’d like to share?
There are too many to tell... but once I was at an event when an actor from 30 Rock was also there. She kept looking at my friend and then approached us. In my head I was imagining she was going to say "I saw you perform earlier and YOU ARE HILARIOUS! You should write for me." Instead she said, "You're sitting on my coat."

Unfortunately, I was staring into space daydreaming about how awesome my new writing job would be for a while before I even noticed. She might of had to repeat it a few times before I noticed what she was saying.

Tell us some juicy gossip.
Becky from high school got really fat... just kidding. I've always been bad at gossip. I don't even know where Becky went to high school.

Do you have any pets?
My friend gave me a pet rock that I still have. Usually I think those things are crap but this one has googly eyes so I think it's legit.

If you were going to draw a Google Doodle, what would it look like?
Not sure, but it would definitely have Cher hair.

What would your superpower be?
To either never need sleep or be able to clone myself so I could do a million things and go a million places at once.

We sure wish we could go to a million places at once too. What are some of your NYC favorites?

Gray’s Papaya - Anthony Bourdain said it best about the recession special: two hotdogs and a drink for $4.95. If you like Hot dogs, great! ‘Cause that's about all they have.

El Conde Steak House - Delicious food, huge portions, and a very reasonable price.

The Gutter - Great place! Super cool-looking, very retro, good beer on tap. But if you are a competitive bowler: bring your own ball. The ones they have are very dinged up (although it adds to the "olde-timey" charm).

Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater - They have quality shows every night starting from 6:30 till past midnight. The most expensive shows are the weekend ones, which are still only $10, while shows on weeknights are around $5. The shows have everything, ranging from long form improv to sketch. Amazing quality and value!

The Library - Awesome atmosphere. Close to the F and some great comedy places like the new UCBeast!
