Coming Soon on Google+: Address Book Uploader

We’ve been listening to feedback from our users who want more flexible ways to find their friends on Google+. One of the most flexible tools is an address book uploader, and I wanted to share the good news that it will be rolling out to everyone over the next few days.

Many email systems— and even some social networks — put users in charge of their own data by helping them export their contacts in the standard CSV or vCard formats.

One thing about our uploader is that we won’t mix your imported contacts up with all of your other Google Contacts. We only store the ones that you put into your Circles.

Google+ About To Hit 10 Million Users [REPORT]

Google’s social network, Google+, might be one of the fastest-growing networks ever, having already reached 10 million users according to one estimate.

Paul Allen, of Ancestry.com — not to be confused with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen — has developed an interesting methodology to calculate the number of Google+ members.

He sampled a number of surnames from the U.S. Census Bureau data and compared it to surnames of Google+ users. By comparing surname popularity in the U.S. with the number of users on Google+ with each surname, he can guesstimate the percentage of the U.S. population that signed up for Google+. Finally, he calculated a ratio of U.S. to non-U.S. users to generate an estimate for the number of Google+ users worldwide.

Recently Google+ has been submitted iOS app (iPhone/iPad/iPad Touch) to the App Store and it's been awaiting approved by Apple. Now followed by Google + (plus) to launch desktop app soon that promised by Google + on their Facebook's page as you can see in the following screenshot below:

This is a serious matter when it comes to user privacy and reliability of a service like Google Plus. Facebook does the same thing, and both of these companies are making this a practice to make the user better searchable.

This however seems too much for privacy experts as the social networks are forcing them to use real names. Google’s other social networking site, Orkut, which has been around for about seven years and has tens of millions of users worldwide, will continue to operate alongside the new Google+ for now.

However, Google is leaving its options open regarding the possibility of fusing the two through some sort of integration further down the road.

“Orkut and Google+ are different products, and will both exist. Over time, we’ll determine what makes the most sense in terms of integrating these products,” a Google spokeswoman said via e-mail, when asked what the future holds for Orkut.

Why Circle in Google+ is NOT Groups?

SlideShare Vice President Ross Mayfield shares the view with Google folks that Circle in GooglePlus is not actually Groups. He argues it to be totally different and is more innovative and futuristic.

Here are some of his interesting arguments:

You can give names to Circles like in groups, but your friend will never know where he belongs. Extremely important for privacy.
Circle is not a Group as group have memberships, can be public or private, can be discover able, can be formed to take action. Interesting Circle has have none of these. Its just for you to share and read.
Sharing in Facebook is symmetric sharing after establishing relationship, Twitter is asymmetric follow, while Google+ is asymmetric sharing.
Sharing your posts has 3 sphere of reach — limited, extended and public.
