Is Your Website Safe For Browsing ?

Google have an interesting webmaster tool safe browsing you can use it to check from time to time if your website or server is victim of malicious software or exploits. Sometimes your server might be attacked and the owner is not aware about it, so if you want to check simply open :

http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=phpmagazine.net

And put your website after site=, the diagnostic page will include the current status, previous status during the last 90 days. Exploits are mainly scripting exploits, and google record also the server IP which host the malicious software.

The diagnostic will tell you also if your website have acted as intermediary in the distribution of malware, probably not very useful information for you, but it is safe to know if something was going wrong.

I think it's an excellent diagnostic that you can get for FREE for your website to make sure that it is safe to browse on your website.

Google Analytics PHP Class & Official Analytics API

We have previously talked about Google Analytics PHP API, in that time there was no official API available yet. Today Google Analytics API is officially available to developers, so you can get your code working with a real API instead of hacks that might broke anytime if Google update their service... etc.

Google Images Got Colors, the power of tagging

Darren pointed to a new feature in Google images search letting you to filter results by color ! The results looks very accurate that you will be interested to know how google are indexing colors ? Are they using image recognition techniques to index every image in their database ? That will be crazy if you think about it, but the answer could be easily found in something launched about three years ago, an ajax game, letting everyone to tag images and get scored on that : The image labeler.

Because the results are very accurate and fast, it can only be something based on a real human indexing ! You can see below for example if you search for a car model, you can get the result you are looking for, but imagine you want to see only gray cars in results, the filter can really give you what you are looking for. While if you used "gray" as keyword in search you will get something else completely different.

I find the color filter implementation very successful. Image search is getting more and more powerful search features and I expect to see more amazing filtering options, who knows !

Google have just announced their entrance to the browsers war to join Microsoft IE, Mozilla FF, Safari, Opera and others. Chrome the new google browser, is very simple and very fast ! Chrome uses components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others - and that's not everything because Google is willing to make it Open Source.

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends -- all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there.

Google Maps With or Without JavaScript

Mika Tuupola shared his experience over his blog about using Google Maps without JavaScript. The problem faced was map empty for empty for browsers with JavaScript disabled, and the render time which was too long. We can probably talk also about accessible maps here. He wrote a static version of Google maps which works without JavaScript, render faster, and defintely solve the previous problems. The only difference that the new static map don't provide bubbles, but I think it's great work if we talk about accessibility and rendering speed. You can see a working demo of Google Maps without Javascript, source code is also available on the svn.

Google Docs Goes Offline

Google just rolled out Google Docs offline, a feature announced previously at end March. A Microsoft Office killer feature that is going to change the way you use Google Docs web application. The new feature is powered by Google Gears, and allow you to keep working on your documents even when connection is lost. Once you are back online, the documents sync up with the server. Currently Google Docs Offline support only documents, presentations and spreadsheets will be probably supported in future versions. The Earth Day from wikipedia is one of two different observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Google celebrated the Earth Day with a new original Doodle. Hope that we goes green not just on websites.

Use the YouTube API with PHP

Vikram Vaswani, Founder, Melonfire, have written an interesting article at IBM developerWorks on using the Youtube API with PHP. Notice that a PEAR package Services_YouTube is available if you are looking for a library to use Youtube API with PHP, but is alpha since 2006.

The article introduces the YouTube Data API, demonstrates how you can use it to browse user-generated video content; access video metadata, comments and responses; and perform keyword searches. The author used the power of SimpleXML to parse Youtube data and build customized PHP applications.

Google reader now offer Sharing items with friends

Google Reader have just been linked to Google Talk to offer the possibility to share items with your friends. A new share icon have been added in bottom of each post. All your friends are able to subscribe to your shared items and so read stuff that you like or recommend for reading.

Google is boosting its services with sharing capabilitis and it's great to see talk integration after Gmail also inside Google Reader. Feature available only in english at the current time.

Once you've logged into Reader and been notified of the change, these friends will be able to see your shared items in the Reader left-hand navigation area under "Friends' shared items". We've provided an option to clear your shared items in case you don't want your friends to see what you've shared in the past. We've also added a Settings page so you can choose which friends you see and invite friends who aren't yet sharing to try it out.

Your friends shared items will be available in the right menu, but there is also a special page for displaying your friend's shared items with photo and profile information.

Google Charts API

Google announced recently a new amazing API go generate charts. Google Charts API allows to create different type of charts on the fly in the PNG-format with the limit of 50,000 queries per day. Currently charts supported include line, bar, pie, venn diagrams and scatter plots. The chart below is generated for example directly using the Google Charts API. Very useful to create charts on the fly and it could be easily integrated with online publishing tools. No need to have GD installed for charts creation, now just read the Charts API documentation and get the PNG anywhere you want.
