SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College students are continuing to collaborate with each other in order to keep the ongoing tradition of OH-Fest alive.2016 celebrates the eleventh annual year of OH-Fest! The event is being held April 24th, 2016 in Neahwa Park.

A battle between singers and musicians called OH-Factor was held April 8th, 2016. Winners

from the competition will be the opening acts for the this year's headliner, Kid Ink.

Kid Ink is a successful rapper, singer, songwriter and producer at the age of twenty-nine. He is engaged to and has a new baby girl with Asiah Azante, a fitness model. Kid Ink is known for collaborating with Fifth Harmony, Usher, and Chris Brown. The community can see Kid Ink and the OH-Factor winners perform at 6:00pm this Saturday.

Fun Fact: Kid Ink has 25 tattoos on his face, arms, hands, and torso! He got his first tattoo when he was sixteen and has been addicted to getting tattoos since. (Picture from: http://www.oneonta.edu/development/huntunion/OH-fest.asp)

There will be a Carnival on Main Street from 1:00pm to 5:00pm and will feature both college communities, street performers, carnival games, inflatable rides, great food, and more!

Insurance: A contract whereby one (the company) undertakes to indemnify (to make compensation for, to make whole) another (the insured) or to pay for a specified amount upon determinable contingencies.

Claim: A demand by one person against another for the recovery of money or property.

Agent: One who has the authority to act for another. An agent is the person who sells the insurance by contracting the policyholder.

An agent acts in the client's behalf in accepting and reporting claims to the insurance company.

Most millennials wonder why their insurance premiums are higher. According to Central Insurance, sixteen year-olds are ten times more likely to be in a car accident than drivers age 30-59 and three times more likely to be in an accident than nineteen year old drivers.

Homeowners insurance is split into three types of coverage: HO-1, HO-2, and HO-3. Policy basic form (HO-1) covers against common losses and disasters such as fire or lightning, explosion, glass breakage, vandalism, etc.. Broad form (HO-2) includes everything in HO-1 along with extensive insurance on home and possessions such as vehicle damage, heating system loss, water damage, collapse of building, etc… Special form (HO-3) includes everything in HO-1 plus HO-2 along with coverage on accidental damage, all unexpected losses, overheated appliances, etc…

Another reason insurance premiums often are higher is due to the type of pet you have. According to Central Insurance, more than 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. Dog bite claims amount to over $1 billion a year, therefore, if they type of dog you own has an aggressive background, your insurance premium is likely to be higher, if you are eligible for insurance at all.

Gordon B. Roberts is thrilled to introduce three students from Hartwick College who will be interning with us for the rest of the spring semester! This internship opportunity will expand their knowledge of the agency and how insurance works, explore in finding our core demographic(s) and gain experience in creating posts for the company’s social media accounts.

Claudia Stone is from Akron, NY. She is a sophomore majoring in Business Administration and a member of the field hockey team. Claudia has worked for a local summer camp for many years and this past year worked for a local ice cream factory in the marketing department.

Kristen Amrhein is from Woodside, NY. She is a sophomore majoring in English and minoring in Music and Business. She is a contributor for Hilltop Newspaper and a dancer in Hartwick’s Orchesis dance show. Kristen had an internship opportunity last summer at a startup company called My Social Canvas (MSC). She's the Account Manager, which is responsible for management of sales, and relationships with customers. She also creates posts for the company’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and blog pages.

Jaclyn Reil is from Fulton, NY. She is a senior majoring in Economics. Jaclyn has worked in senior citizen housing and has done some office work, such as, inputting data into computers and filing out paper work.

4 Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Homeowner Policy

Not all policies are equal. The homeowners policy offers thousands of dollars in coverage for only a few hundred in premium each year... but what should you consider before making that purchase?

Liability: Today's standard is $300,000. This coverage will answer in the event that you are accused of being negligent and causing damage to another person. You will want to be sure that you have enough coverage to pay for an appropriate legal defense. $300,000 is the absolute minimum. If you own your own business or other properties you may want to consider higher limits.

Deductible: Increasing the deductible offers you the chance to buy back some premium. Homeowners policies are meant to protect you in case you suffer a significant loss to your home, they do not provide maintenance coverage. So, if you aren't going to be turning in smaller losses you may want to consider a $1,000 deductible (or higher).

Discounts: Was the roof of the home recently replaced? How about the heating system? In a lot of cases you may be eligible for discounts if these major items have been replaced within a certain time frame. If you are just purchasing the home you may want to talk to the current owners about this and any documentation they may be able to provide you will be helpful in applying for these discounts.

Other Structures: A standard homeowner policy automatically comes with some coverage for any detached structures that may be on the same premises. The standard limit is a percentage of coverage you have purchased for the main dwelling. The limit included may not always be enough to cover the replacement of the structure. Be sure to ask your agent if additional coverage can be purchased.

"Accident Forgiveness" & "New Car Replacement".... what does this REALLY mean?

The advertisements seem to be endless. Maybe I just notice them more because I am an insurance agent but insurance is misunderstood in so many ways that I always jump on the opportunity to educate my clients, family and friends.

Some carrier's commercials make it sound like these coverages are automatically included in their basic automobile policy and this simply is not true. "Accident Forgiveness" and "New Car Replacement" are two examples of options that you need to purchase as an endorsement to your standard automobile policy in order for you to take advantage of them if/when they are needed. Also, these endorsements are not always available in New York State.

This is why it's so important to work with a knowledgeable and trustworthy insurance agent!

Renters Insurance.... Do You REALLY Need It?

Imagine with me for just a sec, you have just found your dream apartment. You are super excited about moving in and making it your home. So excited, that you don't consider the necessity of a renters insurance policy.

Now, how will you replace all of your belongings if they are a damaged by a fire that starts in your neighbors apartment?

There are many advantages to renting. Not having an ownership interest in the the building means you are not responsible for taxes, insurance, maintenance and repairs. However, you ARE probably concerned about replacing your personal items should they be damaged or destroyed.. right? Many people don't realize these types of policies are available. As mentioned in the video below, many Americans don't realize how affordable it can be.

I don't mean to go all "dooms-day" on you here...... but the fact is that renting an apartment within a multi-unit building increases your risk of loss in comparison to person living in a single unit building. Reason #1: you cannot control what your neighbor does in their own unit.

Sweet Sally next door could be leaving candles burning in precarious places and the clothes iron on while she's off enjoying the day at the park. You just don't know. A renters insurance policy will bring you peace of mind!

That being said, renting a single unit dwelling does not mean you shouldn't be concerned. What if a pipe bursts? What if a tree falls on the roof creating an opening which results in weather damage?

A renters insurance policy is incredibly affordable and can provide you with replacement cost coverage for all of your worldly goods! As an added benefit the typical renters insurance policy also includes liability protection and financial reimbursement should you need to relocate (temporarily) due to a covered loss.

To sweeten the deal you may even be eligible for a discount on your auto policy for carrying renters insurance with the same company!

We don't often realize what a high heat temperature can do to our belongings and personal items. Many of these things we leave "stocked" in our car for when we may need them. These items can become damaged and/or cause damage to your vehicle.

It's about Community!

It's probably no secret that here at the GBR Agency we believe in supporting our community!

"Clubs for Clams" and "The Cider Run" are two of the most recent events we were excited to support. Not only did they raise important funds they offered a family friendly, fun time!

The 3rd Annual Cider Run was held on Saturday, April 25th at The Fly Creek Cider Mill. This event is held each year to support a local non profit organization. This year The Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York was the beneficiary. Over 500 people came out for the event that raised $11,725! Shannon Stockdale, agent and owner is a member of the planning committee and The GBR Agency was proud to support the event!

The Alzheimer’s Association of NENY is a non-profit organization that serves a 17-county area but the 2015 profit will stay right here to benefit the folks served in Delaware and Otsego Counties. The support will provide aid to the local office that helps guide families through the Alzheimer’s Journey with information and referrals on local services, individual in-depth care consultations catered to their needs, support groups, education programs and safety services.

On Saturday, June 13th "Clubs & Clams" was held at The Oneonta Country Club.

This event offered a 9 hole tournament followed by live music and yes, of course, CLAMS! Our very own David Weaver (agent & owner) organized this inaugural event that raised $5,400 for the YMCA scholarship fund!

It was a great day enjoyed by all!

A BIG thanks to all of you out there who attended or supported these events in someway! It just goes to show what a difference we can make when we all work together!

Thank goodness Winter finally gave way to Spring here in our area. Actually, it pretty much feels like Summer, but nobody seems to be complaining (personally, I'm loving it). It is wonderful to be able to get outside again and enjoy hobbies like gardening and running.

It's also the time of year folks enjoy riding their motorcycles. While motorcycles can be a lot of fun and save a ton on gas, they require an increased attention to safety. A lot is at stake in the event of an accident; the severity of the loss has proven to be much greater.

If you live in Otsego or Delaware counties than I am SURE you have heard of "The Beekman Boys."

Local celebrities Josh Kilmer-Purcell & Brent Ridge purchased their Sharon Springs farm in 2007 and planned to utilize it as a getaway from their busy NYC lifestyle. Unfortunately (or in retrospect thankfully) both men lost their jobs in 2008 due to the recession. They decided to focus their attention on bringing profit to their Sharon Springs property. They started with goats, added soaps and cheese and now partner with local farms to fill their mercantile. They've certainly built something special and now they are ready to share!

Do you know a farm who could use a lift?

In 2013 Josh & Brent launched their mortgage lifter pasta sauce sharing 25% of the profits from the jars of sauce with small American farms. The Beekman boys have raised $18,147! There will be four "lifts" given... one for $15,000 and three smaller awards of $1,049.

Fire prevention! Unfortunately, there have been quite a few big house fires in our area over the last several weeks. Having a house fire is truthfully one of my biggest fears. Over the years working in the insurance industry I have learned about a few of the common causes of house fires and the tips to preventing a house fire. I thought I'd share them with you here!

The clothes dryer!

In 2010, 16,800 structure fires were reported in the US that were connected to either a washing machine or a clothes dryer. 92% of these were caused by the dryer. The leading cause of the dryer fire.... "failure to clean." Read more here by visiting the National Fire Protection Associations website. Also, check out the video below.

When was the last time you cleaned the lint out of your clothes dryer? This is a great tutorial that walks you through giving that dryer a thorough cleaning. Need more help with this? I would probably recommend a YouTube search and possibly a phone call to the manufacturer of your specific machine.

4 Things to Consider before Purchasing Business Insurance

#1: Does this provide sufficient coverage for your equipment, machinery, tools and inventory?

#2: Does the policy provide coverage specific to your business? (ie: if you are establishing an eatery of any kind; does the policy provide coverage for food spoilage?)

#3: Does the policy provide coverage for property of others while in your possession?

#4: Finally, and maybe most importantly..... does your policy provide sufficient liability coverage? My friends, let me tell you from personal experience... you do NOT need to be negligent to be sued. Anyone can bring you into court and state that you are negligent... the burden of proof is on you.

These are three very important considerations. Don't wait until it's too late to learn about the efficiency of your policy!

When the thaw comes.....

Oh, the increase in temperature brings relief to all of us. The days aren't such a battle... we can get by with one extra layer as opposed to three.

However, the thaw out is going to bring it's own headaches. Folks, we need to be ready for a flood. Even in areas that have not flooded historically. Once this snow starts melting.... it's going to need a place to go. IIABNY released this statement in regards to the possible flooding.

Please be aware that your homeowners policy does NOT provide coverage for a flood. Flood policies can be purchased through your agent but are actually written through FEMA. You do not have to be IN the flood plain to purchase this insurance. Also, flood policies are not immediately bound as they are subject to a minimum 30 day waiting period. If you are concerned about possible flood damage; the time to act is now.

Keep those faucets dripping!

Tips for making it through this winter: fleece tights, triple layers, thick mittens and for heavens sake... let that faucet drip!

I never thought I would say that... who can appreciate a dripping pipe after all? Only those of us trying to survive this arctic Upstate winter. A record setting season for us this year; we are seeing temperatures colder than Anchorage, Alaska.

As if battling the every day elements aren't enough of a challenge, we then need to be sure our utilities are kept in working order.

Thankfully there are preventative measures we can take to be sure we don't wake up with frozen; or worse... BURST pipes! Open those cupboard doors and let those faucets drip!
