this is surprising because there's widespread agreement that sales-taxes are regressive, and bite harder on poor people than rich people. Now the Office of National Statistics has confirmed what economists (except Mr Osborne) already knew: VAT is inherently regressive: "the poorest fifth spent 9.8% of their disposable income on goods attracting VAT in 2009/10, while the richest fifth spent 5.3%." Of course, VAT was only 17.5% then. I'm sure things are much better now that it's 20%.

Upon reaching her place, I hid in her room first and I surprised her with 27 red roses when she entered. Kudos to Nic for helping to place the flowers in the room. We then watched our favourite anime until close to 2a.m. As I had to wake up at 3a.m. to go to work later (Deployment weekend), I decided to stay over.

27 red roses to start her birthday

Time flew by quickly. I crawled out of bed and went to office in the dead of the night. I intended to catch some shut-eye in office to prepare myself for the big day, but little did I know that the Computer Centre would be so freaking cold in the morning. And I ended up shivering all alone.

At 10a.m., I gave Nat a wake-up call, and provided a sweetener on her table. It's a little poem/note thingy titled: "27 ways I love you". She loved it! Looks like I can be a pro-poet when I want to.

After my work, Nat and I went for our scheduled facial session in FIL. This was a godsend! I slept through everything and probably snored and drooled as well. Shiok! The facial also made me more photogenic. Wahaha

Next was lunch at Ootaya. There, the next surprise was revealed.

A photo album of our adventures! Thankfully, it wasn't required, so the afternoon was spent accompanying Nat on her shopping spree in OC. She spent quite some time in Molecule shopping for Clarice's housewarming gifts, and I thick-skinnedly fell asleep on their display couches. Seeing how tired I was, we then snuck into the priority lounge in OC, where I slept on the couch for about an hour. Nat just sat next to me playing the DS game Miles Edgeworth.

When I woke up, it was time for dinner! We went to The Sage along Md Sultan. I chose this restaurant for its good reviews on their duck liver, one of Nat's favourite food. It turned out to be the perfect choice. The food was marvelous; The service, perfect; The ambience, romantic (that is, until a group of rowdy angmohs came in) . Also, the lady boss was very attentive. She gave Nat a complimentary birthday cake, all because I made a passing remark that it's her birthday during the reservation! As for the duck liver, it was heavenly, and huge! My sister is in the third-grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the third-grade too!'

Ms Anna had enough. She took the boy to the principal's office. While the boy waited at the reception of the office, the tea ch er explained to the principal what the situation was.

The principal told Ms Anna he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the first-grade and behave.

The boy was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal: 'What is 3 x 3?' Boy: '9'.

Principal: 'What is 6 x 6?' Boy: '36'.

So it went with every question the principal thought a third-grade should know The principal looks at Ms Anna and tells her, 'I think Boy can go to the third-grade. '

Ms Anna says to the principal, 'I have some of my own questions, can I ask him?' The principal and boy both agree.

Ms Anna asks, 'What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?
Boy: after a moment 'Legs.'

Ms Anna: 'What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?'
Boy: 'Pockets.'

Ms Anna: 'What starts with a C and ends with a T, is hairy, oval, delicious and contains thin whitish liquid'?
Boy: 'Coconut'

Ms Anna: 'What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky'?
The principal's eyes open really wide and before he could stop the answer, the boy was taking charge.
Boy: 'Bubblegum'

Ms Anna: 'What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs'?
The principal's eyes open really wide again and before he could stop the answer..
Boy: 'Shake hands'

Ms Anna: 'Now, I will ask some who am I sort of questions, ok?'
Boy: 'Yep.'

Ms Anna: 'You stick your poles inside me. You tie me down to get me up. I get wet before you do.'
Boy: 'A tent'

Ms Anna: A finger goes in me. You fiddle with me when you're bored. The best man always has me first.
The Principal was looking restless and a bit tense He took one large Vodka peg.
Boy: 'Wedding Ring'

Ms Anna: I come in many sizes. When I'm not well, I drip. When you blow me, you feel good.
Boy: Nose

Ms Anna: I have a stiff shaft. My tip penetrates. I come with a quiver.
Boy: Arrow

Ms Anna: What word starts with a 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?
Boy: Firetruck

Ms Anna: What word starts with a 'F' and ends in 'K' and if you dont get it you have to use your hand.
Boy: Fork

Ms Anna: What is it that all men have one of. This year, I paid slightly more attention to it because Carol is in it!

And I'm not the only one who's not interested in it. Lets look at the No. 1 gossip newspaper in Singapore, The New Paper. Every year, they will criticise (rightly) the contestants for being buang. This year, such criticism is notably absent. The reason can be seen in today's paper. Their report concentrates on only 2 contestants, the winner, Jessica and...... third place Christabel! No mention of 2nd place Joey at all! They even had a paragraph for top 5 Peggy, yet don't even bother to mention poor Joey. This is because these 3 contestants were former NewPaper New Face contestants! TNP is just using MSU to promote their own pageant! What a farce.

The lack of interest can also be seen from the turn out at the studio. We "fans" are supposed to be seated at the lousy balcony seats, but in the end, we are asked to go down to occupy those empty seats below. Charles and I ended up sitting on seats labelled "Carol Cheong". Looks like none of Carol Cheong's friends are interested in this :P

Another reason its a farce? Check out this forum post.

Hi to all, I attended MSU2007 finals at media corp yesterday nite, my conclusion to the competition is that it is simply a staged show, no competition involved, I am quite sure that the results are fixed much earlier. Following are the observations and analysis that I had come up. No offenses, just plainly from an outsider’s point of view.

The evening started great with all the girls coming out with masks and their Greek type shiny wears. Then the next event starts to make me wondering the scoring system. You see I was seating a couple of rows behind the judges to the right and centre of the stage so I had a good view on both the stage and also on the judges. The first “competitive” event is the swim suit section and by all standards, this session should be accessing on the body contours and shapes of the contestants. The result simply overwhelms me. Joey Feng and Adlina Adil were in top 5? They are just having really ordinary bodies, it is so clear that some of the other girls are having much better assets than these two, for example, just the body alone, Carol Chin and Xue Mei should definitely beat these two at least. Do not believe me? Please watch the replay if you can. Joey Feng and Adlina Adil scores are higher, simply because that score is needed to justify these 2 in the top 5 later on in the show. It is staged from this point onwards.

The next “competitive” event is the evening wear section, this time round, having the questions in my mind; I started to notice the judges on what they were doing. The judges were having two monitors each, one being a normal small TV display that shows what we are watching on channel 5, the other is a laptop displays the contestant’s infos, I could see about 3 picture on different profiles of the contestant and some tables below the pictures. The event started with Christabel Campbell walking around the stage, it was very clear the she walked with a hunched back especially when walking across the stage from right to the left. The evening section should be looking on the poise and elegance of the ladies, but the way Christabel Campbell walked showed none of those qualities, I can’t believe that she won the Ford models competition with that. (A background research on this told me that both MSU and Ford Models were organized by the same Derrol Stepenny Promotions http://ch8.mediacorptv.com/around8/...iew/284/1/.html). During the time when Christabel Campbell was walking, the judges were all looking, one or two of them may have used the mouse and one other judge even had his monitor screen pulled down to avoid it blocking his views. Then it came the high score of around 8.5, so where did this come from? I stress here again that only 1 or 2 judges used the mouse while the others simply did nothing, none of the judges used keypad or what-so-ever, so where did this high score come out? Later on in the section I saw almost all the girls fared better than the hunched back walking of Christabel Campbell but their scores much lower(except the final 5), without any inputs from the judges, and yet the scores "magically" appeared on the floor as what you had seen on TV. Again we can see from here that the scores are fixed no matter how they fare, the final 5 is definitely going to have higher scores even if others performed better in the particular section. The scores are there just to “justify” their position in the top 5, something like a backward engineering if you get what I mean. Later on we can prove this further.

Next is the announcing of the top 10, a side note over here. Joanne Lopez and Angelina Tay were in the top 10s? Firstly, Angelina Tay is simply too fat in any pageant standard, watching her “live” is an agony that I can’t describe. You can almost feel her fats squeezing out, her smile was so exaggerated, her body is below average even on orchard-road standard. The only thing that she is good for is to become a spokes person for a semi-successful slim trial. Joanne Lopez is just very ordinary. She is the kind of people that you won’t pay a second glance. She has very average facial feature, very average body shape, a very big smile. Was she there because she is the only Indian lady left? Anyway, in the top 10s, these two girls should be replaced by a few girls such as Eunice Chizuko Ng and Fang Yu Ying and some others. These girls beat them in every way on stage. You will agree with me, don’t you?

Next is the QnA section. Christabel Campbell had done a good job in slapping our Sports Council upside-down. A direct summary of her speech is “our first Olympic medal could be won if we can BUY the correct talent from OTHER countries. ISN’T this what WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN DOING? We CANNOT TRAIN any talent so we MUST BUY them.” Can you imagine if she were to say this on a world stage? What impact could this cause? From now on, if Singapore managed to win any medals, they will know it is because we bought them. Such an awful answer! Despite this, she went into the top 5 and later on top 3, you can tell me this is not staged? This answer should have ended her race for good if there is any competition involved. Jessica Tan’s answer is not much better either; she spent so much time in explaining global warming is bad because it is bad, her link between the issue and the campaign is weak and there was not much content in her speech as she kept on repeating herself. She showed very limited knowledge even in simple issues such as global warming. Her entire speech was overwhelmed by stupidity I would say. Maybe some call that sincere as she demonstrates her true self. She practiced well for her postures and smiles but something can’t be trained I guess. I hope she don’t make fun of herself on the world stage in Mexico. Li Ao from Taiwan already said that Singaporeans are renowned for our stupidity; we certainly do not need one more to demonstrate it further. Through out the QnA section, the judges never seemed to have taken note of what the contestants were saying. I can’t remember who said what and so I expect they can’t remember everything. In that case, how are they going to judge on the ladies’ QnA performances? Having said that, no matter how bad the answer is going to be, the top 5 is fixed as we can see that Christabel Campbell is in even though she just slapped Team Singapore who were there in the event. Jessica Tan is in for her looks covered well for her intellect. Adlina Adil was in for what? For any racial considerations? Her QnA was below average that you can't remember what she said. I do agree that Peggy Chang and Joey Feng did well for QnA.

Next for the top 5 QnA we can again see that the top 3 is determined before hand because in this section, Peggy Chang definitely did much better than any of them and yet she is not in one of the top 3s. Jessica Tan again demonstrated her limitations on intellect while some of you may call it sincere again. Maybe you guys should watch last year’s Miss Universe and you will start to pray that in the coming Miss Universe 2007, Jessica Tan will not enter the QnA section.

In conclusion, from my observations on the performances of the ladie and the judges, I would say that this is just a staged show. No competition involved. Some ladies did badly, they advanced, some did it great, they didn’t advance. I saw no inputs from the judges and the score is predetermined. I will not watch MSU2008, this just kills my excitement. Good job to all the ladies involved in the competition. I can assume that u ladies also knew the result of the competition and yet u all did it great for a good performance, real complements to you all. Maybe a lot of competitions are carried out in a staged fashion, but thats not what I expected of MSU. I hope next year's competition will be a true competition where we select the best to represent Singapore. If not, why bother sending?

Oh what a surprise, the results are fixed.
I am no expert on beauty, but its pretty obvious when someone sucks. Lets look at the first event, the swim suit round. The worst contestant is obviously Angelina, with her fats. She ended up with an above average score and proceeded to the top 10. The worst contestant for the second round, the night gown round, should be J Lopez. She was stiffer than a marching soldier for god's sake! Again, she got an above average score. Looks like the judges were really just there to show face and collect money.

And then we get to the most interesting QnA round. The top 5 probably gave the top 5 worst answers.
First is the Malay, Adlina or something. She stammers, lacks confidence, keeps saying "you know" with the hand action (probably not seen on TV), and keeps repeating the same points, and stupid points at that.

Then we have Christabel saying that the Team Singapore athletes, who are so nice to be there, will not win the Olympics unless they are foreign talents. Ouch. I thought tact is an important attribute in choosing Ms Universe?

Next we have Peggy. We all remember her for having the best answer in the 2nd QnA round, but can you remember what she said in the first round? She's not answering the question at all. The question was asking about what she thinks is an Asian woman. Her answer is basically "East meets West". Erm? That is the answer for "What is a Singapore/Modern/Global/empowered woman". This question is asking about the "East" part of "East meets West".

And then we have Jessica. What will you do if you are prime minister? Campaign to Adopt a tree for all children in Singapore. Basic idea is pretty good, shows she had prepared for the question, but then she kept rambling on about how "trees are good, global warming bad".
Best is her answer to the 2nd round of QnA. What if your mum disapproves of your boyfriend? Mum knows best, even if you bribe me with a million dollars, Mummy's love cannot be bought. Erm? Shows why she was from NUS Business.. Apparantly, the killer is a 20 year old Asian, and the building attacked was the Engineering building.

Of course, the media's kneejerk response is "he's a gamer!". Well, I'm sure most Asians in the US are gamers..

Rumors say that his gf left him for another guy, and he shot them before killing himself. Well, I would think that the stress of engineering (exams are here!) plus gf leaving you would be a more likely reason for the killings rather than being a fan of "counterstrike: half-life" (according to the expert lawyer on video games).

[UPDATE] Oops, apparently he is an English Major, Cho Seung-Hui. MUAHAHAHHAHAHAA I GOT TROPHY!

Wah lau, the competitors are all freaking pro. Never knew JCs got reversi clubs. All go there, know the rules and can discuss strategies with terms like "parity" and x-square, even-squares, etc. All I never hear before one.

But in the end, all lose to me! MUAHAHAHA

Ok, obviously I lost to the really pro ones. Lost to TP captain(first place), NY captain(2nd place) and the founder of Reversi NUS(3rd place). And for the first 2, I lost completely. No chance of surviving at all. The 3rd place one, I managed to struggle till I made a super big mistake at the end. Sian.

I think for a super amateur like me who only plays on yahoo games, during my army days, thats quite an achievement. I mean, I did not really play until I signed up for the competition, where I went yahoogames to play a few games to get back my momentum. Damn thesis paper leaves me with little time to train.

However, super sian that I won the 4th place guy(TJ captain), but in the end his points more than me. Its because I don't bother to count seeds like the pros. I win liao, i get complacent, I lose liao, I also get complacent... 20 minutes allowed for each player, I usually use only 5 minutes while the opponent will use almost all the time. When I lost to the first place guy, I commented that I have totally no chance against him, He said that its because I place my first steps too fast, that I should think more before I place. But in Reversi, the knowledge in the first steps come with experience, and I totally don't have that... Kinda ironic that the 2nd place guy said that my first steps are "forcing" him, but i messed up in the middle. Haha

Also, against the 4th place, I placed my last seed and forgot to flip the seeds that it ate, since I am just happy that I won a pro. So missed out on a lot of points there.

Oh well, the people above me are captain level, and those below me also have tons of competition experience. They bloody hell memorised the starting moves!! I think what I had achieved is good enough for me to gloat :p

Also, my skills probably leveled up with each game I play in this competition(especially each game I lose). I don't think I can get any better than this, cause I can't be bothered to train, and when playing, can't be bothered to think too hard.

Its not as mentally straining as chess, but its still intellectually stimulating.

Well, never really played seriously before, don't really know how my reversi skills stand. Basically amateurs can't beat me, but I have only played amateurs. Really interested in signing up for this competition, but its like just before my FYP deadline. The lack of good prizes also deters me.

Also, its going to take up the whole day, Swiss system competition basically means I will play all the way whether I lose or not.

How how how? Please help me decide.

NUS Reversi Championship 2006/2007 cum Recruitment
24th March, Saturday
MPSH 4, NUS

1.
