Going to the NWAACC Championships
The LCC basketball teams came up with home wins over Green River on February 13 with the Red Devil men’s win of 72-60 and Lady Red Devils win of 58-44. This clinched a berth into the NWAACC Championships in Kennewick on March 1-4.  The LCC men have qualified for the tournament more than any team in NWAACC history!

Final Home Game Tonight!
Eight outstanding LCC sophomores will play their final basketball game on Wednesday, February 20 against the Tacoma Titans.

The Lady Devils women’s team plays at 6 pm and the Red Devils men’s team plays at 8 pm.

Bring your friends, it’s ASLCC Spirit Night!
These players have been great student/athletes and we want to “show the love” with a big crowd and some fun happenings during half-time.

• Lady Devils Taybra Teeters, Kayvonne Vaver, Nichole Locke and Yale Pritchett will play in front of the home crowd for the final time.
• Red Devils Ryan Rogers, Colin Bossio, J.J. Roffler and James Tarleton will play in front of the home crowd for the final time.

Baseball / Softball
The LCC diamond teams are getting ready for the start of the season in just a few days. 

• The baseball team opens the season Friday March 1 at home against Bellevue, a 5 pm double header.  The Devils will then host Chemeketa for two games Saturday March 2 at 12 pm.
• The softball teams opens on the road at Yakima Valley Friday March 1, a 1 pm twin bill. The team will then take part in the NWAACC Pre-Season Classic Saturday and Sunday March 2-3 in Richland.

‘Road Victories’
Last night (Jan. 23) was great for the LCC Basketball teams!  Both Red Devil teams came up with great road victories at Tacoma, a tough place to play. 

Lady Red Devils
The LCC women rallied from 13 points down with just 10 minutes to play, taking a 59-58 victory. Natasha Marith was the star, scoring 17 points. It was her lay-in and tie-up in the final seconds that won it! 

The LCC women have won six straight games and are along in second place at 6-1.  The Pierce Raiders come to town for a 5 pm game on Saturday (Jan. 26).

Mens Basketball
The LCC men gave up just 15 second half points in a 61-47 win over Tacoma.  Nate Trotter had 16 points and Ryan Rogers had 12 points and 13 rebounds.  After an 0-2 league start, the Devils have won five straight as they host first place Pierce Saturday night at 7 pm (Jan. 26). This is a huge game and the Devils need a large crowd to help in the effort. Please make plans to join us for a great afternoon/evening of basketball at Myklebust Gym on Saturday Jan. 26 at 5 pm.

LCC Athletics Hall of Fame
After a 15 year hiatus, the LCC Athletics Hall of Fame will induct three new members on Saturday February 2, prior to the Red Devils home games with Grays Harbor. 

Gary Earnest
Longtime coach and athletic director Gary Earnest will take his rightful place in the Red Devil Hall of Fame.

DeAnne Nelson and Michael Quinney
DeAnne Nelson was a two-time MVP in both basketball and volleyball and Micheal Quinney left LCC for stardom at San Jose State. 

A ceremony honoring the three takes place on Saturday February 2 at 3 pm in the LCC Student Center. They will also be introduced and honored at halftime of the basketball games.

Friday (Sept. 21) in front of a spirited home crowd, the Devils defeated Clark 3-2. LCC evens up its league mark at 1-1 with the victory. Thanks to the students and staff who showed up and cheered on the team. It made a difference!  The Devils were back on the home court Wednesday night (Sept. 26) with Pierce.

Soccer
The LCC women’s soccer team also had good support last Saturday (Sept. 22) when they defeated Wenatchee Valley 5-0. Lacie Smith scored three goals and Kaylee Garvey added two.  Thanks to the ASLCC who showed up to give out Foam Forks and snacks!  The Devils hosted perennial power Peninsula Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 26). All LCC home games are played at Northlake Field.

Softball
The LCC softball team began fall scrimmage action by traveling to Aberdeen Saturday (Sept. 22), going 3-0.  The team showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with come spring. The team will take part in the NWAACC Sophomore Showcase event all day Saturday (Sept. 29) at Delta Park in Portland.

Baseball
The LCC baseball team traveled to Portland Saturday (Sept. 22) for a scrimmage game with Division 1 University of Portland.  No official score was kept due to NCAA rules, but LCC and the Pilots were scoreless after seven innings and Portland scored six runs late.  It was a great experience, especially for the freshman who competed as collegians for the first time.  Story Field will be the site for the NWAACC Sophomore Showcase Saturday (Sept. 29) starting at 9 am.  Pro scouts and college coaches will be on hand to see the top returning sophomores in the NWAACC.  There will be two “scripted” 12 inning games.

Soccer
The Red Devil soccer team lost a road match Saturday (Sept. 15) in Spokane, losing to a very good Sasquatch team 4-0. The Devils play at home for the next three matches that began on Wednesday (Sept. 19) against Tacoma. The Devils then hosted Wenatchee Valley Saturday at 12 pm (Sept. 22), also at Northlake.

Volleyball
The LCC Volleyball team won two and lost three at the Edmonds Cross Over tournament Friday and Saturday (Sept. 14 & 15). The Devils opened up West Region Wednesday night (Sept. 19) at Highline. The Devils then hosted Clark Friday night (Sept. 21) in the LCC Myklebust Gym.  We hope to see you come on out and cheer on our Red Devils!

It won’t be long before a new crop of Red Devils begin arriving on campus to start a new life as college athletes. Many are playing summer ball, others are working summer jobs, and some are just chillin’ until college starts in the fall. Here’s an update on the new faces you’ll be seeing in September.

Volleyball

Carsyn Altenhofen

Head coach Marcy Gilchrist welcomes local faces to the program like Jessica Fischer of Kelso, Cassidy Bragg of Woodland and Erika Freeman of Kalama.

Morgan Godhino of Union High in Vancouver is the niece of former Red Devil star Jennifer Hefley. Two Saint Helens Oregon stars are Carsyn Altenhofen and Kayla Brumbles. McKenna Hoyt of Napavine brings her talent to Longview.

Jennifer Cole

Former three-sport star Jennifer Cole from River Ridge will be a huge asset after spending her first year of college at Central Washington University.

Soccer

Coach Harlan Cruser will actually have some experience after an all-freshman team last season. But he’s also excited about this year’s frosh. Leading the way is Jordan Brown from Prosser, who led the Columbia Basin basketball team to an NWAACC title back in 2009. She’s an incredible athlete.

Lacey Morris

From up north, Lacey Morris of Napavine is also a versatile athlete. Also from Napavine is Samantha May and Lacie Smith, both key members of the outstanding Tigers program. Kerri Russell of Tenino is another top Lewis County player. From the south, Megan VanSoest of La Center and McKenzie Near of Camas will compete for playing time. Emma Glasow is a top goalie prospect from Skyview. Rhinna Hall comes from southern Oregon where she was a star at Crater High.

Women’s Basketball

Arineshia Smith

Chad Meadors is pumped up over his five person recruiting class. Haley Hibbs is an incredible athlete and the Silverton multi-sport star will make an immediate impact.Speaking of big impact, Arineshia Smith of Tyee was the state’s leading scorer averaging 28.5 points per game for Tyee High in Seattle.

Two Kelso stars will stay home and excite the fans with great play, Taylor Pritchett and Natasha Marith. Back in basketball after three years away, Ilwaco’s Lanie Kary will bring talent and toughness around the basket.

Men’s Basketball

The lone signee so far is Nate Trotter of Adna. The 6-6 post will be an immediate contributor. Stay tuned because head coach Jim Roffler has assembled more talent and announcements will be made soon. It appears there will be players from overseas coming next season.

Softball

Traci Fuller

Head coach Traci Fuller is excited about her first full recruiting class after getting a late start following her hire last year.

Joining last year’s NWAACC runner-up squad is exciting catching prospect Ku’ulei Soilo from Aberdeen. Tumwater twins Ashley and April Wells bring speed and skill.

Allison Paladeni

Skyview infielder Allison Paladeni played for coach Fuller in her days with the Storm. Two other Clark county stars, Kyla Alley of Heritage and Jessica McDonald of Prairie will be in the mix on day one.  McKenzie Melby is a pitcher/outfielder from Cascade High in Everett who will bring versatility to the Devils.

Baseball

Not only new players, but a new head coach for the first time in 19 years! Donegal Fergus has 11 guys signed so far and they are all good.

Mitchell Tripp

Pitchers include OSU transfer Mitchell Tripp, Easton Napiontek of Port Angeles, Hunter Goldberg of Mercer Island and Bradley Spencer of Montesano.

Position players include Torey Dunn of Hockinson, slugger Brandon Santos of Graham-Kapowskin, Patrick Minzel of Stadium, Tanner Marty of Cedarcrest and Jake Bakamus of Issaquah. Bakamus is the nephew of MM hoops coach Bill Bakamus.

Ryan Tydingco

Ryan Tydingco is also a versatile player from Timberline who brings a lot to the program.

MM pitcher Zach Brill also signed with LCC but it appears he is ready to try pro ball after being drafted by the Texas Rangers.

Derrick Salberg

In case you missed the excitement last May, we’ve captured the buzz surrounding outfielder Derrick Salberg’s ‘Catch’.

To recap: on May 25, during the first round of the NWAACC Baseball Championships, freshman Derrick Salberg made a game-saving catch over the left field bullpen fence at David Story field, preserving a 4-2 victory over Everett, and  keeping the Red Devils in the winners bracket for the semifinals.

It was an important catch, even though Pierce College went on to win the Championship. But we had no idea how just how popular Derrick’s catch would become.  Just type Salberg’s name into Google and you’ll get pages of stories and video postings. Here’s a sampling:

Whew, what a day!

But more importantly……what we’d really like to say is what Charlie Earl, Executive Director of the State Board for Community & Technical Colleges, said at our 76th Annual Commencement Ceremony held on June 15.

Note: Charlie is the past president of Everett Community College, yes Everett, the very college that was defeated with Salberg’s catch!

In Charlie’s own words:

“….rest assured I don’t hold a grudge. After all, the catch was amazing. In the final moments of the game, Salberg managed to leap over a 4-foot fence and make a winning catch in mid-air, seizing victory for the Red Devils.

It was a tremendous play, not just because Salberg is a great athlete. But because he knew where to focus. You see, Salberg didn’t focus on the fence; he focused on the catch. And that’s what you all have done to get here today.

You’ve cleared hurdles — worked hard — fulfilled a promise to yourselves and your families to finish what you started. You made the catch, and I congratulate you.

That’s the real reason ‘The Catch’ was so popular. Focus. Focus is what every one of our students does, every day, to  make a better life for themselves through education. Whether on the field or in the classroom, they work hard at achieving their goals. And for that we salute every one of them. Red Devils make us proud!

Baseball
The Red Devils baseball team had a great weekend to go along with the great weather! On Saturday April 21 in Centralia the Devils took two games from the Trailblazers 14-1 and 9-2.  On Sunday April 22 at Story Field, LCC swept Centralia 15-3 and 5-0. LCC is now 9-3 in league and is looking forward to a huge four games series this weekend (April 28-29) against the first place Pierce Raiders. Saturday’s 1 pm double header is at Story Field, then the teams turn around and play two games Sunday at Mount Tahoma High School in Lakewood, also a 1 pm start.  Make your plans to cheer on the Devils this Saturday!

Softball
The LCC softball team had a tough weekend (April 21-22) in the heat of Yakima, dropping three of four games in the NWAACC Crossover fastpitch tourney. After defeating Big Bend 8-3 Saturday, the Devils lost to Douglas BC 15-8. Sunday, the D’s lost to Olympic 10-0 and Columbia Basin 5-4.  The team is banged up right now, but no time to heal.

The Clark Penguins come back to Kelso tomorrow (April 24) for a 3 pm double header. The games were rained out last week. Come on out and support tomorrow’s games against the rival Penguins!
