And three riders without any driving license. Two of the bikes were like they were never taken for servicing for over a year. We actually paid for that. Their tyre punctured. It would have been more pleasure had the highway passed through the hills.

In Maharashtra, this year’s Mansoon has broken last 40 years rainfall record and its still on its way to break another century record. We travelled using NH-7, which has four beautiful, well maintained one way lanes. National highway is funded by the central government. So, the highway was in very good condition. The design speed of that highway must be 100 kmph. Hyderabad was 485 km from Zero mile in Nagpur. Taking average speed of our motorbike as 60 kmph, we assumed that we would reach Hyderabad in maximum 10 hours. The rain had to disturb us. We took a night rest at Armoor, a small town and travelled remaining 184 Km in 3 hours the next morning.

It was still 24 km left to reach the centre of the city. But the city had already started to show its traffic and unmanaged urbanization. We met our friend’s friends there and further proceeded towards the city. The city was normal Indian city with more beggars, traffic police and more flyovers. The city’s traffic was a mess like in Kathmandu. Telegu was used almost everywhere and Telegu actor, Mukesh Babu had replaced Sharukh Khan and Salman Khan in hoarding boards.

Broadlink, the leading ISP in Nepal has increased its speed by two times. Now the users will get the speed of 256 Kbps with the same price they used to pay for 128 Kbps unlimited plan. It has completely removed its all packages of 128 Kbps with 256 Kbps. Now the Broadlink customers will be able to surf unlimited for 1 month at Rs. 899 including taxes at 256 Kbps. It now becomes the only ISP in Nepal with the cheapest wireless broadband service.

In addition, the speed for another volume based package, 3GB for Rs. 499 has been increased to 5 Mbps from 768 Kbps. With this move, the company is expected to attract the users of NTC ADSL service and NCell Connect. Currently, the ADSL users are paying Rs.900 per month excluding 24% tax. Yeah…ADSl is providing half the speed and is 24% more expensive than Broadlink. Ncell Connect users pay Rs. 499 for 500 MB usage at 3.1 Mbps.

Listening budget allocation for some really big mega projects from our finance minister in each budget speech is as interesting as being sad after analyzing that even after half a decade, the foundation is not laid. The projects like Ktm-Terai fast track, Budhi Gandaki HEP, East West Electric Railway Project, Tamakoshi HEP, etc. can really bring some big economic improvements in the country. What I feel worse is the stability of the government and its reluctance in executing the developmental projects. There are some silver lining in the timely completion of Upper Tamakoshi HEP mainly because of the participation of multiple private financial institution. The government undertaken projects are very unlikely to complete in time or they are being delayed and completed at two or three times the estimated cost.

But everything is not bad at all. We may not have 8% growth of GDP, still its more than +3%. Maintaining above 3% economic growth at this fragile condition is not bad at all. Development of Roadways and communication is still impressive. Its just the matter of time. We have no other options left than to be optimistic that Nepal finally gets a new constitution which gurantees the prosperity and stability of Nepal.

Someone gifted it to my father when it was not even launched in India and Nepal. It’s already been like 4.5 years. Time has changed and so is the technology. 3g was launched last month is India. And my n70 already had 3g technology and that too in 2007. Hmmm…4 years ago. During these four years, lots of new models have unveiled themselves. Though they have improved their looks and features, they still are not too better than N70. Let’s see the basic specifications of this model. First, it’s a 3G mobile and supports data speed at 384 Kbps. It supports EDGE too, and supports data speed at 232 Kbps. It also has a high resolution 2MP camera. The picture quality is superb. There are lots of other models from Samsung and Nokia. They too are 3G enabled and support HSDPA. They also have GPS. Some are even coming with Android OS. Comparing it with the features available on other mobile will definitely beat N70. But what I think is, in India and Nepal, we should use what telecom operators provide. Like using video call and 3g data service. I have 3G activated on my Vodafone but I don’t use its 3G internet plans as they are very expensive. Though my mobile supports 3G data at max. of 384 kbps, I don’t need to use at its max speed. I am happy with the edge speed. Mainly because, it’s moderately fast and I don’t actually browse you tube videos. And if I need to use you tube; I use MTS Mblaze which has a speed up to 3.1 Mbps. And when I am in Nepal, I don’t have to use 3G at 3.1 mbps. Because the telecom operators don’t have any volume based packs. Using internet at 7.2 Mbps on “pay as you go” plan is not worth. What I mean is, until we don’t have any cheaper 3G internet plans, we won’t use it as there are other lots of options available. If you don’t use it, you don’t need HSDPA mobiles. And this is the specialty of new mobiles.
I found that many consumers who want to get a new internet connection are not fully aware about the packages and prices about the service they will be using. Plus what I witnessed few weeks ago was that ISPAN (internet service provider association of Nepal) interrupted internet service for one hour demanding the Nepal Police to stop raiding its offices. What?!? Yeah!!!! For one hour…. Our constitution guarantees our right to communication. Their service is not reliable anyways.

Unlike in India, the internet is exceptionally expensive in Nepal, if wireline internet is compared. In India, the operators had to pay hefty money for the license, so at the initial stage it’s a little bit expensive. But, this time the telecom operators lack their presence in the circles. Once they start their 3G service in full swing in all their circles, I hope that the prices will come down and I won’t have to stick this slow internet. There are a lot of people in Nepal who want a new internet connection and the price is the only barrier.

World link, Subisu Net, NCell, NTC and Broad link are the main players in the market in Nepal. Subisu net exists or not. I don’t have any idea. Though I am pretty sure that the prices are quite higher.

Worldlink: Worldlink is supposed to be the largest ISP of Nepal. Its plans start from Rs. 1300 per month, unlimited at 256 Kbps. But the service is not that reliable. Sometimes it goes down. And the speed drastically decreases.

Ncell: NCELL currently provides internet through its EDGE GPRS and USB modem. The speed is good because its all networks are EDGE and 3G enabled which supports up to 232 Kbps of download speed. In 3G coverage area, its speed is up to 7.2 Mbps. Lets look on to the prices. If you are surfing through the GPRS, you have to pay 7 paisa for 10 kb, which is finally Rs. 7.168 per Mb. If used through its USB modem, you get 500 Mb with Rs. 499 valid for one month.

UTL: let me tell you about the speed first! Speed is pathetic! I used it few years ago, and it disappointed me. The network coverage is very poor. The download speed it gave to me was just 2 Kbps in average and maximum 7 Kbps. And the plans are very cheaper. Rs. 500 per month for unlimited at the speed of 256 Kbps. This is what the company says. Once you use this, you will never look back to it. Actual speed is 56 Kbps. Less than Dial Up connection. Please don’t join this network even if its giving good speed and good signal in your area. Nepal Telecom Authority may scrap its license soon, as it has not cleared its royalties.

NTC: after launching its ADSL, its subscriber base increased rapidly. Currently its unlimited plans start from Rs. 900 per month with 192 Kbps and Rs.1500 per month with 256 Kbps. It’s a wireline provider. Still, I think it very expensive.

Broadlink: It’s a new entrant in the market and its expanding with some aggressive plans. It’s a next generation wireless internet service provider. Till last month, it was providing 3 GB of data with Rs. 300. Currently, it has increased the price to Rs. 499 for 3GB. This is the best option for the users who want internet on the go. The unlimited plans start with Rs.499 per 15 days at 128 Kbps. The unlimited plan for one month is Rs. 899 with 128 Kbps. Well, its same as NTC’s ADSL. One important benefit of this is, National Roaming and you don’t need to pay the bill monthly. Instead you have to recharge it with the vouchers. And you are given the user name and password. As we all know that Nepal is in transition phase, and it may prevail for some more couple of years. The constitution making process has not yet started and the deadline is about t finish with not more than 100 days remaining. So, what were the factors that hindered Nepal from developing?

The international trade was limited to Tibet only. After the restoration of democracy, Liberal Economic policy was adopted and the country for the first time witnessed a whopping economic growth of 7.6%. But it didn’t last long. The Maoists started the armed revolt and everything was destroyed. The insurgency lasted for ten years. Which means development was stopped for 10 years. OMG!!! 10 years??? That’s a decade. We couldn’t progress for 10 years and we even destroyed what we had. The central government was so weak. The Maoist Civil war cost 15,000 lives and thousands Crores and ended on 2063 BS. And this crap constitution writing process started. And it’s still in limbo which means the country has to wait some more years to get a stable system. Everybody wants their rights in the constitution. So it’s normal for a country to experience this kind of situations during the transition period. I bet if the country gets a stable government and end to bandh, we still can attain good economic growth.

In 2014/15, you will be a productive citizen. And 2/3 years for earning and learning as a fresher. By2016/17, the country may finally get a new constitution and a stable government. The Load shedding will have ended. You will want to make your living. Many Nepalese students are in The US and The UK for higher studies. 20% of them may return back to Nepal. What about the students studying in Nepal? It was said to be a state level program but I didn't see any participants from outside Nagpur city. To be more precise, it’s an annual function mainly organized by the Third year civil engineering students for the second year students. There were eight events like Cinemascope, Technical Quiz, Debate, Paper Presentation, Capture, Town planning, Poster making and so on. I also went for the publicity of the events to other colleges like YCCE and VNIT. Actually, I wanted to visit the other top colleges of Nagpur. So, for me "publicity" became my secondary job. Moreover, the organizers were funding for the travel expenses and lunch. YCCE had its own program from 23rd to 29th and VNIT was closed in Saturday.
Next day, as the events were scheduled later. I woke up late. Aditya called me and asked me to come for the quiz. Neither of us was prepared for the quiz. I went to the college. The quiz had already been started and we were in. There were 80 teams competing for the top 12 positions. As we were not prepared for the quiz, I thought of getting on to the top 12 teams anyhow as we would get the certificates also. First, the questions seemed to be tough. As we went on by, we had had almost correctly done most of the questions. 15 minutes was over and the first round was over. There were 80 teams, we had very little hope. Amey gave me a call and informed me that we also had been selected. First we couldn’t believe him. We went to the notice board and saw our name there. Second round began. All the teams were at zero score. I answered one answer. That was the funniest part. The question was “When is the sports day observed in India and after which person is this day remembered?” The answer was “Dhyan Chand, 29th August”. The answer was correct. Everyone looked us amazed. We were leading the race. As the game went on, on top five, we were fifth. Third round began, we were third. And we won five hundred rupees, Indian currency.
This movie's trailer is also so good. But the Government body, Nepal Electricity Authority is not ready to buy that produced electricity at Rs. 6/unit whereas it has been importing what it says "subsidized" electricity at Rs. 7.25/unit. The Nepali Private Company had offered NEA to sell their electricity production somewhere at Rs.4/unit in summer and around Rs. 6/unit in the winter.
What is this NEA? Nepal imported diesel worth Rs. 1000 Crores for operating Generators, "subsidized" electricity worth Rs.200 Crores and other some hundred Crores for buying inverters last year. If NEA shows the same behaviour towards Nepalese Entrepreneurs, I am worried that my grandson will also face the loadshedding.
TIA the only international airport in Nepal has upgraded its infrastructures to facilitate the tourists. what is more ironic is that, the political parties who always criticized each other's economic policy seem to be positive about this compaign. The publicity has not been good as it should have been, still the number of tourists who visited nepal in 2010 surpassed all the previous records. The stars hotels has improved their room capacity to accomodate the regular large number of tourists and its like wave among the nepalese to promote it in social networking sites like facebook and twitter.
All the best for the success of bringing more than 1 milllion tourists to Nepal.
And i dedicated my whole day searching about our former prince paras bir bikram shah dev. Recently, he attempted to shoot "Robber" Choudhary. And this is what it is called being a real "HERO"
And now Paras has already gained a status of a national hero. Amidst the failure of a political parties to elect a new prime minister, and Sujata Koirala's attempt to forward MRP contract to India, both the cases reflected the leaders not so concerned about the country;s interest. Whatever be the past, this man has surely proved himself as true patriotic among all the maobaadis and khaaobaadis. From this I can assume this ki, he has a inherited bravery and courage of Prithvi Narayan Shah. Now, looking at the current situation, I've already concluded that Constitutional Monarchy was far more better. that tinme, at most one man used to corrupt the country. now, all the leaders corrupt the country. The service is effective in markets which are highly competitive with high penetration rates.

“It offers flexibility to mobile users to change the service provider retaining the existing number,” said Kailash Neupane, spokesperson of the authority. “It helps users to change the service provider easily if they are not satisfied with its service.”

If the facility is introduced, MNP will benefit subscribers in terms of pricing and quality and innovation in services offered. It will allow Nepal Telecom mobile subscribers to switch to Ncell’s tariff and service plan, and Ncell subscribers to Nepal Telecom without having to change their phone numbers. According to the NTA, introduction of MNP gives a fair chance to service providers to compete by offering new products and better service at competitive prices by giving customers the option to select.

Neupane said that MNP had become a tradition in the international telecom industry, and the government was also planning to introduce it in Nepal.

The NTA has been looking at MNP and its possibility in Nepal’s telecom industry by forming a sub-committee under the leadership of NTA senior engineer Nirmal Pradhananga. Over 60 countries around the world have already adopted MNP including India. According to reports, MNP has worked well in South Korea and Hong Kong, while in some countries like Taiwan and Singapore, the service proved to be ineffective.

“We are ready for it,” said Sanju Koirala, corporate communication manager of Ncell. “MNP is a huge investment. Is Nepal ready for it?” If the service is implemented, telecom operators will generally collect the porting fees fixed by the NTA, comprising of administrative charges and other fees.

The former holds that the Tibetan saint, Manjushree, flew down to Kathmandu. Upon seeing the huge lake, he cut the Chobhar ridge in half with his mighty sword and drained the waters to allow civilisation to flourish in the fertile sacred valley.

There is ample geological evidence to prove that the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. But geologists piecing together the genesis and demise of the primordial lake now think it may not have been drained all at once, but in phases.

The lake was formed over one million years ago with the tectonic uplift of the southern edge of the Valley and the damming up of the proto-Bagmati River, probably where Katuwal Daha is today. As the southern rim of the Valley rose at a geologically rapid 3cm a year, the lake shifted northwards. The level of the lake ebbed and rose between 1,400-1,440m, depending on the prevailing climate, making it about 200m deep in places.

Geologists have found the fossil remains of the extinct ancestors of mammoths, hippos and crocodiles in the Kathmandu Valley. They have pollen-dated the sediment, indicating that the shoreline of the Kathmandu Lake was heavily forested with pine and hemlock and teeming with wildlife.

The last Ice Age cooled and dried the Himalaya and the lake started to shrink starting 30,000 years ago. The main water body carved its way through the soft limestone at Chobhar, leaving behind a shrinking lake and three smaller ones at Gokarna, Pashupati and Kitni. These lakes later carved 'mini-Chobhars' and emptied into the main lake.

As the lake receded, flats emerged above the water that were later separated by the tributaries of the Bagmati, which sliced channels through the soft clay. The airport is one such flat from the Gokarna Period 30,000 years ago, and geologists think Thimi and Patan surfaced 25,000 and 18,000 years ago respectively.

The Kathmandu Valley civilisation with Lichhavi and and then Newar settlements grew and prospered because of the fertility of the soil, and later because of the Valley's location along the ancient trade route between India and Tibet. In their wisdom the early settlers set up towns along ridgelines, leaving the fertile slopes for farms. This unique urban-rural symbiosis and the agricultural surplus it resulted in enriched the kingdoms of the Valley, and they ploughed back the wealth into the unique cultural and architectural heritage of their towns.

Kunda Dixit
