Straight up had a dream last night that I got a puppy and named it Azealia Banks, who has been my musical obsession as of late. Other things that Azealia has been named recently include the top of NME's cool list, beating out Pulp's Jarvis Cocker. Cool points for preferring cats over drugs, and saying the c-word while dancing like a weirdo wearing a Mickey Mouse sweater and pigtails. This track amongst others are so good.

Sorry for the neglect dear goshdamn blog, life has been all kinds of crazy and busy and weird. A dude dressed as 1/2 of Hall and Oates at a Halloween party said I'd make his dreams come true (see what I did there) if we updated the blog more often, and here we are! Personally I've mostly just been blogging about random public relations type stuff for school (hashtag dull, but big ups to college, university's cheaper, funner cousin). This is a song by London singer Youngman that I've had on repeat as of late. If you're getting a mixtape from me for Christmas, this will surely be on it.

Youngman, closely connected to Magnetic Man, is releasing this single on Shy FX's Digital Soundboy label on January 15th in the new year. He has become the choice hype man for the likes of Skream and Benga with a knack for working an audience and as you'll soon hear, he also has mad vocal talents.

Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate

This cheesy little slice of classic garage was procured for about a dollar alongside some stellar Whitney Houston "I'm Every Woman" garage edits that I'd love to rip from vinyl but am currently uncapable of doing so.

Four Tet recently played this out the last time he did a set at the Boiler Room, something feels so authentically bumping about the bassline -it's impossible to be pessimistic when you hear it. Last time I DJed, 3 separate people came up to me and gave this "nod" of approval - does that mean that this track was immensely popular back around its release in 1999 and I missed all the hype, or does it just have the power to summon good feelings from everyone in the room?

Either way I'm satisfied.

Ruff Sqwad - Functions / Havana

The best grime instrumental ever, or the BEST grime instrumental ever? Actually, revisiting this stuff now I can imagine that I missed tons and tons of great instrumentals over the years. Combing youtube and other sources now in a desperate attempt to catch up, similar to the first time you try some really good dumplings in Toronto's Chinatown and then consecutively after for the next three weeks when your friends ask if you want to go out for dinner, you reply in a near panic that you HAVE to get dumplings because there are like, FIFTEEN different combinations at least and they're all so good that you actually have dreams about them and wake up in a cold sweat in the night wondering if you got dressed and biked down there that one of those restaurants would be open at 4:45am.

So yeh, it's kind of like that.

This is the 70's Belgian jazz, J Dilla sampled, Marc Moulin piano playing group whose "Humpty Dumpty / Balek" EP just got re-released over at Phonica, which has a cut from their 1971 and 1973 LPs put back to back, for noteably less than the £100 that you could spend trying to track down a copy online. Sublime stuff for summer rooftop parties.

Sheeeeit, it's been a long time since I've updated. Thanks Mo for keeping things running - there are some things I have been really bumping lately but they've come out more than a few years ago and therefore aren't really Discobelle-esque.

For example, this - Carl Craig re-edits Talking Heads "Once In a Lifetime" and it's motherfucking impossible to track down. Vinyl sold out several times and any rips are guarded better than Mordor and Fort Knox rolled into one, gawddamn. A hundred internets for anyone who stumbles upon this track somewhere, thanks.

Gene Hunt just rolled into Vancouver for another edition of the Waldorf's History of Dance nights and while I missed it, it still piqued my interest in Gene Hunt.

I came across this wonderful EP over the weekend, released by the super Dutch dance label Rush Hour. I made a little minimix of three choice cuts from this EP, all unreleased, raw, unpolished and brilliant reel-to-reel tapes that would have never seen the light of day again if Gene Hunt didn't hold on to the gems.

The Weeknd - What You Need by The_Weeknd

The Weeknd is a collective from Toronto that no one really knows too much about. "What You Need" is a slow, syruppy, deep synth-laden burner, with echoing vocals, falling somewhere between The Dream and Hype Williams on the R&B spectrum. Definitely a name to keep an ear out for this year.

EDIT: Drake just went up twenty spots in my books by signing these guys. AND they just dropped a mixtape featuring "What You Need". Cop it here.

There's a house party at my place, which is the first time I DJed with two of my fellow Gosh Damn folk (Cosi + Faheck). I am wearing a pumpkin leotard and have to prevent a bunch of people from beating up someone who showed up having stiffed my roommate $400, and my then-boo pukes on my printer, bed and floor. I still use the sheets, they still have some slight stains. This was something I remember playing right before the puking:

However, the chemo drug sends me into a nearly catatonic hallucinatory state where all I can do is puke water while three nurses stand around me looking vaguely worried. I have the worst fever of my life when I'm living in this community house. My roommates, unbeknownst to my suffering, have a house party in the other room. I can't sleep for longer than ten minutes for eight hours straight, and halfway through the night a couple bursts into my room and collapses on my bed making out, not knowing that I'm sleeping on it. At around 4, I wake up and download some stuff from fluokids, including this song, which is the first l-vis track I'd ever heard. It made me feel like something inside my skull was broken and sound was going around in my head in a way that it shoudln't.

No Regular Play - Owe Me (Nico Jaar Remix)

Nico's got me feeling good with this "grown ass" "weird person" "imma play 75bpm house music because i don't care what the club thinks" kinda music. Compared to the recent vinyl purchase of "Time For Us" from Wolf + Lamb and "Wouh" from Gadi's vinyl only Double Standard imprint, this one's the fastest paced of em' all though, and shimmys around the vocal sample quite nicely.

In other amazing news, I'm no longer too impoverished to start buying vinyl! Probably the start of some dumbass obsession that I'll blow several grand on in the course of the next couple years. Oh well, beats buying diapers for my non-existent children who I will never have.

This mix blares an anthem from the start, which is a bit overwhelming, like walking into a disco at the height of the evening. But then then second track gets worked in, a melodious, acid-y slow burn and well, the rest is another home run from the H&LA crew.

DAMN, this is the first vocal sample I've heard in months that carries the kind of immediate infectiousness. Good reviews all around suggest that this whole EP is going to match the quality of "Walk & Talk", but I love the hypnotic catchiness of this single in particular - the other night I was in some Japanese basement nightclub / record store and saw a compilation of UK 90s techno called "Chill Out or Die III" (available fer free here) that kind of encapsulates the attitude that I want to my favorite dance music to have lately, an attitude that B + S are embracing in top form. I want going out to hear music be similar to getting washed over by a big chunky wave of static housey melody, and this definitely delivers in that category. Can't wait to cop the whole EP.
