The plywood is being cut to fit the window opening and is painted to look like a real window. On that day six of the windows were replaced while the date for another replacement day is in the works. If you haven’t been up to see this charming addition to the house it is a much needed improvement. Thank you for your hard work!

The Strawberry Festival is just around the corner on Saturday, June 9th. We will need volunteers to man the booth in 2 hour shifts. If you would be willing to help please let us know by sending an email to goshenfarm1783@gmail.com. We schedule at least 2 members to each shift. If we can get enough support we would like to walk in the parade this year as we missed last year. It’s a great way for our youngest GFPS members to walk the parade route – let us know if you would like to participate.

St. Margaret’s Joust- Saturday, July 14th- help will also be needed to man this booth- this is where we pick our raffle winner.

Halloween Ball – Help is needed in planning our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year. This will be our 4 year and we hope to make it even better than last year. If you have party planning talent we can use your help! Please let us know if you would like to help. The date for this year is Saturday, October 27th.

The Cape St. Claire Gardening Club is partnering with a family-owned business to sell sturdy and beautifully constructed RAIN BARRELS. These beauties are $95, priced significantly below retail, and all proceeds will benefit Goshen Farm Preservation Society, to help preserve our local treasure of open space behind the elementary school. Order online anytime, show up and pay on Saturday, June 16th, from 9-11am, and go home with a black or terra-cotta colored recycled food-grade plastic barrel.

Each has sturdy and handsome brass spigots, includes screens to keep bugs out, and is ready to use – simply cut your downspout to the right height and put the barrel underneath. If you have ever wanted rain barrels on the corners of your house, now’s the time! Save pH-neutral rainwater for your plants, lower your water use, reduce runoff to local waterways, give a recycled food-barrel a 2nd life outside the landfill, support the preservation of a historic home and open space in greater Annapolis, and buy from a family-owned company in the USA. It’s a win-win-win! You must pre-order your barrels.

Photos of the barrels, more detailed information, and an order form can be found by visiting our blog: capegardenclub.wordpress.com

On March 25th we had our 2nd Annual Java & Jazz Fundraiser. Over 60 guests came out to St. Margaret’s church for refreshments and to hear the Jazz Perpetrators perform. On hand was our slide show with the history of the house, the history of our organization and our progress. We also had artifacts found on the property displayed. T-shirts, books, memberships and garden plots were for sale.

Once again appetizers were prepared by Rocca Culinary Services and were delicious! Coffee, Tea and cocoa all flowed. And massages were available for a truly relaxing experience. We thank all of the volunteers that came out to help plan, set-up, clean-up, work the tables, distribute flyers and anything else I may have forgotten. Thank you: Barbara Breeden, Stu, Karen and Corinne Bailey, Lou & Smitty Biondi, Mike Buchet, Laura Murray, Betty Brandemart, Patty Feldt and Karen Boyle. We could not do these events without your help!

The Goshen Farm Sharing Garden had its official opening on Marcy 31st. Committee members and Chair Nicole Neboshynsky planned a lovely Garden “shower” where gardeners and members could donate gardening tools to share. Although the sky was a bit grey there was a nice crowd all day long. A team of Boy Scouts manned the driveway while Brownie Troop XXX was on hand to watch over their plot. All plots were reserved that day and there is now a waiting list. We welcome all of the new members to the GFPS and hope to see you at our events.

To learn the basics on why lead dust is a problem, everybody needs to read EPA’s brief pamphlet Renovate Right: Important Lead Hazard Information for Families, Child Care Providers and Schools.

The main point is not to breathe or swallow the dust and not to track it home where children under age 6 can breathe or swallow it. Adults can develop permanent flu-like symptoms, including lethargy, from lead dust particles. We all probably got exposed unknowingly in our childhoods to lead (which explains SO MUCH…), but we don’t want to add to it! Here’s the link: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/renovaterightbrochure.pdf

If you can’t read the link, I’ll send you the pdf file. I’ll check back with everyone to make sure they received it.

The crew that will be working on renovations will be following the safety methods described in Small Entity Guide to Renovate Right – EPA’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program. [Renovations affecting less than 6 sq. ft. per room of painted surfaces, or less than 20 sq. ft. of exterior painted surfaces, are exempt from the rules in the pamphlet, unless it’s window replacement, which is always covered by the lead-paint rules.] Essentially, the crew will use acres of plastic sheeting and tape,
wet swiffers, wet wipes, and personal protection from breathing and swallowing lead dust. Here’s that link: http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/sbcomplianceguide.pdf

Before renovations begin, we will be requesting the assistance of a lead-paint inspector who has volunteered his services to examine the house with special equipment that detects lead in various surfaces. The inspector will be able to pinpoint the areas, likely windows, that will need special treatment and those areas that are fine.

If you like smooth jazz music, gnoshing on savory hors d’oeuvres and tasty treats, and sipping on coffee and tea, you will want to mark your calendar for the Goshen Farm Preservation Society’s Second Annual Java & Jazz Event, a fundraiser to benefit the restoration and preservation of Goshen Farm. The event will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road, Annapolis, MD 21409.

Barbara Morgan, President of the GFPS, remarked, “Goshen Farm is a community treasure. The Society has been working since 2007 to preserve the property for future generations. We invite our friends and neighbors to come share a Sunday afternoon with us and learn more about the property and our efforts to save it.”

The Society holds several fundraisers each year, including Java & Jazz. This Sunday afternoon event features jazz music provided by The Jazz Perpetrators, a group of talented local musicians who perform regularly in downtown Annapolis and at other venues in the central Maryland area. The tantalizing menu of hors d’oeuvres and sweets is provided by Rocca Culinary Services, owned by Beth Rocca, a local chef and caterer. Guests will be able to learn more about history of the property and the restoration plans, catch up on the Society’s efforts, and find out how they can become a part of preserving local history.
