Sound advice.

 Murphy’d Law states (rather accurately by the way), that anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

The scene:

It was a Thurday and I’d just gotten out of work. I had to stay late to go to some pointless meeting and I had my film event that night so I was anxious to get home and get ready.

That’s niether here nor there really. The subject of this post is pee.

I’m sure everyone has had to pee really badly at least once in their lives. You know…the pee pee dance and all.

Now the sensation you feel when you want to pee most intensely is nothing at all compared to the sensation you feel when you need to pee intensely after you’ve had a couple of drinks.

I ran into an old coworker on my way out and we got to talking and before I knew it, instead of going straight home to get ready for my event, I was in the local bar downing Coronas. We reminisced about the “good old days” and after awhile I had to excuse myself because I was going to be late for my screening.

I got onto the train, thankfully it had come quickly.

At around Times Square, I noticed that I had to pee.

When I was in college and persuing a degree in Psychology (I later switched my concentration to English after working a brief stint for the psychic network [yes, Miss Cleo] and deciding I could not listen to another person’s problem and keep my sanity) I took a Neuropsych class. The one and only thing I remember from that class is that alcohol blocks the production of vasopressin which is a hormone that facilitates the absorption of water by the kidneys.

This is why drinking makes you wanna pee like a motherfucka!

It was around Park Place that I realized I was in dire straits. I had at the very best  maybe twenty minutes to go. I tried to pep talk myself, telling myself I’d make it, citing the many times I’d been in this situation and made it through ok.

It wasn’t working.

This time was different. This was pee with a vengance. And I just couldn’t stop thinking of running water.

You know what they say about desperate times…

The train was pretty crowded, it being rush hour and all, and I faced the fact that if I didn’t do something, I was surely going to piss myself in a subway car full of people. They’d all look at me like I was one of those crazy bums.

I thought about getting off at the next stop and finding a bathroom. But who knew how long I could be walking before I found one? And then instead of urinating on myself on the train, I’d just do it in the street.

I knew what I had to do.

I stood up.

I opened the doors that led to the next car.

I checked briefly to make sure no one was looking.

And then in one swift motion, I unzipped and pulled down my jeans and squatted between the cars, praying that those rumors about the third rail weren’t true.

I relieved myself, pulled up my pants and then returned to the car and stood reading as if nothing happened.

Yeah, I garnered a few quizzical looks. But I was satisfied. Because I had taken my pee into my own hands.

And I didn’t get electrocuted.

But.

All of that could have been avoided, had I peed before I left the bar.

Disclaimer: This post is not meant to imply in any way that the author has any real insight into the nature of men (if there is such a thing), or the nature of women for that matter (again, if such a things exists). Furthermore, we as a society need to stop speaking with disclaimers and just say what’s on our minds.

When I first started working for the company I work for now, I was working in a predominately female department.

Well, even “predominately” is an understatement. If we had any males at all, there were two at most, compared to over twenty women.

I got bored and wanted a challenge so after a couple of years I switched to a bigger department. This time, I was in the minority being virtually the only female.

And this is what I’ve learned.

Men and women truly speak two totally different languages. But I’m not going to bash men. Rather, I want to talk about the useful things I’ve learned from them in the past two years of working closely with them.

1. Say what’s on your mind.

You think a man would sit and stew over something you said that pissed him off for a month before he found the right time to tell you? Hell no! A woman is more likely to pretend something didn’t bother her, let things build and then explode for seemingly no reason on her poor unsuspecting victim. Not men. They curse each other out and get it over with and furthermore they have this uncanny ability to remain friends afterward.

2. Ask forgiveness, not permission.

Men don’t wait around and caucus before making decisions. If there’s something that needs to be done or a decision that needs to me made and the decision maker isn’t around, for the most part they just go ahead and if they mess up they apologize for it later. Most of the time, they don’t have to and they avoid the waiting around that just slows down the progress of whatever it is your trying to accomplish. Learn to make decisions and make them quickly for yourself and for other people. And don’t second guess.

3. Don’t talk about it, be about it.

We’ve all heard the adage actions speak louder than words. My experience has shown me that women are much more susceptible to flowery language and strings of promises without any proof behind them. I haven’t observed this trait in the men I work with. For them the proof is in the pudding. And conversely if there are props due to you for a job well done, those props will be given despite any personal clashes.

4. Speak with authority.

The token woman on a team full of men eventually learns how to get herself heard (for me it mainly involves speaking to them in their language, which involves a good deal of profanity, sarcasm [something women always bristle at], short succinct sentences all while putting some of that proverbial bass in my voice). When I respond to questions or give commands laced with even a sliver of self doubt I notice the reception is not as good as when I’m sure and I speak with authority. I was expecting the guys to put their backs up at a woman ordering them around but then I learned that people will follow anyone as long as they know what they’re doing, or at least make a good show of it.

5. Own your mistakes.

In all my years in the workforce, I have yet to hear a woman say simply “oops that one was my fault”. At least not without then implying that it really was someone else’s fault after all or claiming ingnorance of the situation, or explaining herself to death. Again contrary to my original expectations, men are quite willing to do that. And they keep it short and sweet, “I made that mistake” or “that’s my fault”, state briefly what you’ll do to fix it or how you’ll do better or avoid the mistake next time and then move on.

2. If some says “no that’s not what I meant let me rephrase”, chances are that it is what they meant they’re just gonna say it in a way to make u feel better about it.

3. If someone says “no offense” chances are they’re gonna say something offensive. They’re just saying that because they don’t want you to get pissed at them for it.

4. Anybody who acutally has balls doesn’t bother to use any of the above phrases.

I almost shook when he was finished.

I love my job.

And I also resent it.

I resent it because I feel it’s not allowing me to persue the things I really want to do, the things I love to do. I don’t get to really use my brain. I don’t get to create.I feel like I can have so much more.

But.

There’s no guarantee that persuing the things I really want to do will allow me to pay my rent.

This is a no brainer. As much as I love Johnny and want him to take home and Oscar one day, Daniel Day-Lewis has this one in the bag.

Best Actress Nominees

- Cate Blanchett
- Julie Christie
- Marion Cotillard
- Laura Linney
- Ellen Page

Cate Blanchett is fierce but this year Julie Christie will steal her thunder.

Best Director will go to the Coen brothers (and it’s about damn time).

Best Supporting Actor will go to hot ass Javier Bardem for flawlessly playing an absolute psycho.

Best Supporting Actress will most likely go to Amy Ryan for her wonderful work in Gone Baby Gone.

Those are my picks.
