Spring Nail Obession: Corals and Konad

I am obsessed with crafty nails again. And by crafty, I mean really easy and basic Konad/sponge/water marbling designs. My current favorite involves using two polishes and one new Konad plate. Obviously, you can customize this look to whatever you like, but I'm really liking how these two corals delicately play off of each other. The combo is decorative and pretty, without being flashy. Blues, turquoises and greens would also make for perfectly on-trend pretty nails (as if you needed another reason to use that For Audrey color).

If you are new to Konad, it's easy to do. You basically apply polish to a Konad plate, scrape off the excess, use the stamper to pick up the design and then use the stamper to put the design on your nail. Piece of cake. There are literally schmillions of tutorials on the Internet to show you how to use Konad.

I used Barielle's Gotta Have Fate as the main color. I used Essie's Tart Deco as the Konad stamp color. Pretty, easy and perfect for spring! I used the M85 Konad plate for the actual design.

I would be blogging about television. I love television. I am excellent at watching it. It watching TV were a sport, I would be in the Olympics. But reality tv doesn't count. That's TV junk food or what you use to "warm up" before "power watching". Somme Institute Skincare with MDT5 Gave Me Surprising Results

Somme Institute Skincare is a line of products formulated using MDT5 technology (Molecular Diversion Technology). What exactly is MDT5, and why should you care? Let's tackle the science first. Then I'll tell you about my results.

Molecular Diversion Technology is a revolutionary vitamin/protein delivery system that allows highly engineered vitamins to penetrate deep into the skin. This helps to repair sun damage, wrinkles, acne and rosacea, and helps to improve the tone, texture and clarity of your skin. Vitamins A, B3, B5, C and E penetrate the skin more deeply and effectively than was previously possible. The result is brighter, younger, healthier looking skin. Or so they say.

The Somme products suggested for me and my dry, sun-damaged skin are their basic MDT5 system. That consists of a Cleanser, Exfoliating Pad, Vitamin C Serum, A-Bomb and a daily SPF.

The Cleanser uses MDT5 Technology and includes the vitamin combo that makes the skin care line stand out. It removes most makeup with ease and is non-irritating.

Step Two is officially called Transport, but is actually damped exfoliating pads that contain AHA and MDT5. This step helps physically and chemically exfoliate the face. There is no stinging associated with this step, which feels more like a fresh toner than a strong AHA.

The third step in the daily regimen is to apply the Vitamin C-based Serum, which also contains a high percentage of MDT5. In my experience, Vitamin C has been one of the most effective way of diminishing my very stubborn sun damage.

The fourth step is called A-Bomb, a light cream containing, you guessed it, MDT5. However, this also contains additional amounts of Vitamin A and E, as well as ingredients to help lessen fine lines and wrinkles.

Finally, during the day, you'll want to apply the fifth step, Double Defense, which is a day cream with an SPF of 30+. This step is crucial whenever you are trying to diminish damage done by the sun.

When I tested this system, the Somme Institute was very clear in their directions. I was ONLY to use their products for no less than two weeks. If I mixed other products with theirs, the efficacy might be lessened. I complied, and only used their products for two weeks. Actually, I'm still using it! And I am way past the two-week mark.

At the end of the two weeks, the incredibly stubborn patch of melasma on my face had actually started to break up. It's been laser and peel resistant, but the combination of Vitamin C and MDT5 seems to really agree with my skin!

This regimen is not inexpensive, but depending on what you are used to spending, it's not outlandish. If you have sun damage and are starting to see wrinkles and fine lines, this is worth considering. I am honestly very surprised that it made such a dent in my sun damage. Almost nothing else has been able to touch it!

YBF Private Reserve Antioxidant Oils Should Be In Your Arsenal.

YBF is one of those companies that I trust. Their products are not inexpensive, but I've never met one that didn't live up to its claims. The owners, Darrell and Kimberly, are nice, honest people. It's why most bloggers love the product. There is no downside to this line.

A great way to get to know them is through a new product booster they've launched, the Private Reserve Antioxidant Oil. Available in Sandalwood or Rose (depending on the season), these oils contain four ingredients that will make your skin thank you. They come in a black, glass bottle that includes a pump to dispense the correct amount each time. The ingredients? Meadowfoam seed oil, the powerfully protective antioxidants spin trap and Lipochroman-6 and sandalwood oil (or rose oil) to soothe your senses and calm your skin.

I've been adding this to my skin care regimen night and day and love the results. Not only is my skin softer and not breaking out as often, I can even swear the pores around my nose are less noticeable. The changes to my skin also happened quite quickly, which is unusual.

I love the Rose scent, which is only available seasonally. However, it's worth trying no matter what. It's going to be a staple in my skincare no matter what else I'm using!

The Oscars are this Sunday and I'm excited. It's my own version of the Superbowl. Two of my loves, movies and beauty, coming together, for one exciting night. I have high hopes for the show and the celebs, despite not liking that many of the movies. My favorite this year was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but that's just me. And since Andy Sirkis was overlooked again, I've refused to pick movie favorites and instead, am all about the glam.

2012 Spring Trends You Should Be Thinking About Now.

Bigger Hair. Stick straight hair will probably never go away but that doesn't mean you can't embrace your hair's natural texture and let loose! Rihanna's Grammy hair is the perfect example. Add some texture, add some volumizing spray and shake it out. Stop worrying about the structure and work it!

The Color Green. Not the mint green (just my opinion. I don't think it's that easy to wear. I don't care what other people say. It's the bright yellow of the green family). But a pretty kelly green. A real green. H&M had a bunch of beautiful greens. Wear it in accessories, tops, shoes, everywhere. Just not all at once.

Retro Hair and Accessories. This goes from polka dots to rolling your hair into complicated updos to wearing broaches and carrying large clutches all of the time. Now is the time to practice your gibson rolls and pin curls. And don't forget to carry a scarf with you for impromptu rides in convertibles! And when that fails, skip to the 70's, go au naturel and use a head wrap!

Peplum Tops. They'll make your shape an instant hourglass. Think it's too stuffy? Add a bright red lip and work your inner pin-up girl during the day. This shape is flattering on almost everyone. A tee like this makes it easy to try.

Laura Mercier Spring 2012 Collection

This March, Laura Mercier is launching quite a few new colors and products that have me lusting for more. For example, I definitely need to update my old Laura Mercier portfolio with the new Custom Artist Portfolio. It's gorgeous. It holds everything. And it has a hard shell, which makes it perfect for travel.

Laura Mercier will also be launching several new limited edition colors that you are going to want to check out. First, are three new Lip Glazes. Available in Soft Pink, Plum and Lotus Bloom, this sheer lip colors add a bit of flush and shine to your lips. They are perfect to layer over the season's brighter colors that are showing up everywhere.

Also new are three Sheer Creme Colours for the face. All three are designed to give you a healthy glow, like you've just gone for a relaxing walk. Sheer Creme Colours are available in Pearl Glow Veil, Pink Cheek Veil and Bronze Veil.

New! L'Eau de Chloé Would Be Great In An Elevator

Since I am not a fan of the strong, musky scents that seem to be so popular this time of year (based on people who I tend to ride elevators with at work), I'm very excited for the lighter, spring florals to make their debut.

The one I am most excited about is L'Eau de Chloé. While we all know my nose is not known for having a sensitive palette, I'll give you my impressions as best I can.

The original Chloé contained Pink Peony, Freesia, Lychee, Magnolia Flower, Lilly of the Valley, Rose, Cedarwood, Amber and Honey, leaving behind a floral scent with a bit of a heavier bite. It's one of my favorites.

L'Eau de Chloé is a much lighter, more citrus-y scent, with grapefruit as one of its top notes. Made up of 22% natural rose water, this fragrance is much lighter and strikes me as much more of a greener scent. Touches of the original Chloé rose remain, but it's much airier than the original. Its mark after evaporation is not anywhere as heavy as the original. It also smells a bit of patchouli (which honestly is not normally my favorite) where the original scent leaves a trace of Rose as its mark. However, the patchouli is so light that it does not offend my delicate sensibilities the way stronger scents of patchouli tend to. Other notes in this fragrance include Cedrat, Peach, Violet, Rose Petals, Cedarwood and Amber.

L'Eau de Chloé is now available and retails for $40-85.

Sample sent for review. Should we ever be on a game show together, the original Chloé is my favorite scent to wear in cooler months.

Stila Smudge Crayons Waterproof Eye Color Make Smoky Eyes Easy

As part of their spring 2012 launch, Stila recently released eight colorful Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Colors that won't smudge, crease or fade until you take them off. These are very waterproof, so be prepared to use a little makeup remover, cold cream and maybe a microfiber towel (if you've never tried a microfiber towel to take off your makeup, you need to try it. It's great for that impossibly hard to remove mascara.).

(Black, Umber, Midnight Blue, Antique, Dazzle, Kitten, Pink Violet, Smoke)

The colors are true and don't fade throughout the day. You also get a generous amount of play time with these crayons before they dry down to their semi-permanent state. These colors apply slightly thicker on the lid and while you don't need a primer, if you have crepey eyes, you may want to use some kind of primer that will help suspend the shadow over the actual texture of your lid.

Kitten or Antique are fantastic for a quick weekend day eye look. Smoke makes for a fantastic really easy smoky eye (a five-year-old could do it. I'm tempted to get my niece to try my theory, but she's four.) Midnight Blue would also be gorgeous as a smoky eye. You can't really go wrong with these.

Beauty Shorts: Buttery Lines, Dastardly Don'ts and Magnetic Attraction

Clinique recently launched some new liners, Quickliner for Eyes Intense. These liners claim to be Clinique's darkest, most dramatic liners yet. They claim these never need sharpening and are equivalent to liquid liners. Addicted to all things charcoal (and peach) as I am, I picked up the Intense Charcoal. The wear is pretty great and they are possibly the smoothest liners I've tried in a while.

They are also so soft that more product needs to be twisted up after applying to one eye. So don't expect this pencil to last forever, but it is buttery soft , stays and glides on. Check it out in any of the six colors for $15.

Love Nails, Inc.'s Magnetic Polish, but hate the price tag or limited colors? I just spied these Magnetix Polishes at my local Rite Aid. I haven't tried them yet, but I bet the magnetic apple doesn't fall far from the polish tree. If you have checked them out, let me know how they worked! I liked the Nail's Inc. ones, but did find them to be a little hit or miss (or it could be a pilot error.) Let me know if you try them!

Finally, as a public service announcement, I would like to tell you why you should never, ever, ever, under any circumstances, let people put lash extensions on you for $20. I thought this seemed obvious (kind of like how you are SUPPOSED to take care of your kids). Here is the way lash extensions work. Trained professionals take lash extensions very seriously. In fact, reputable companies won't sell their extension products to people who haven't completed their training. The training may include any or all of the following (this is from Xtreme Lashes):

Submit proof of health/beauty license or credentials.
Take a 2 day hands-on eyelash extensions training training program (9 hours in each day).
Successfully complete the Level 1 Training Program.
Spend 1 month practicing and successfully complete 12 Xtreme Lashes® Eyelash Extensions applications on models.
Successfully complete a Certification Training Program by demonstrating:
- Proper use of eyelash extension adhesive
- Proper eyelash extensions attachment.
- Proper eyelash extensions styling and design.
- At least 45 eyelash extensions per eye during the 2 hour application time.

This process calls for using a very expensive type of glue next to your eye. Using the wrong kind of glue can cause all kinds of issues, including blindness or loss of vision. Eyes are not like your hair. They don't grow back if someone does a bad job.

Lash extensions are expensive because of the time it takes to complete the process, which is usually around two hours. The materials are very expensive. You get what you pay for and if you are paying $20, you are gambling with your eyesight. I'm not saying that any place that does this kind of work is bad, but you get what you pay for. And since you just can't get new eyes, please be careful.

Sephora Double Contouring Cream Blushes are Domes of Goodness!

Cream blushes make me woozy. Especially when they aren't priced at $38 each, like my favorite YSL in Velvety Peach. I am not going to defend Sephora's house brand for one hot second. Except you should know that their new Double Contouring Cream Blush is pretty awesomesauce.

Before I dive into colors and techniques, let me help out you googlers, who are no doubt in search of how to open the blush. They didn't make it easy, did they? The packaging is really similar to the Urban Decay Stardust Shadows. Squeeze the plastic rim on both sides and the top will pop open. You're welcome.

Now, back to the details.

(Coral Flush, Apricot Sheen, Golden Spice, Poppy Pink, Rose Glow, Flashy Fuchsia)

Sephora has released six glorious mounds of creamy cheek color. Three have a satin finish and three have a slight sparkle or shimmer. The colors blend seamlessly into your skin and wear pretty well. I would suggest setting them with a powder when you are finished to extend how long they last. I've easily gotten about eight hours of wear out of the Golden Spice and Apricot Sheen.

You can apply these cream blushes in a few different ways. You can use your finger for a medium amount of color, or try a fan brush for a slight hint of it. If you really want a strong color payoff, try applying the dome of color directly to your cheek for the most color impact. Better yet, apply the blush straight from the dome under your foundation for a lit from within look. And if you are looking for a cheap Orgasm, Coral Flush is almost a perfect dupe.

I picked up Apricot Sheen (you aren't surprised, are you?) and Golden Spice. I specifically picked up Golden Spice to mimic Adele during her Grammy performance. She used her cheek color to contour. On my fair skin, this tone is perfect for achieving the same look.

Lac-Hydrin 5 Gets The Job Done.

It's dry skin time, which means I'm on the hunt for something that seriously works. Not something that hydrates the top layer of your skin, but honestly, I'm looking for something that won't allow my skin to crack. Yeah, my skin is that dry. Gross, I know. But it probably happens to you or "your friend" from time to time, so I know we are all in this together.

A million years ago, when I was a wee lass, I'll never forget a dermatologist saying to me, "Do you have insurance?" Then she wrote me a slew of prescriptions for my weirdly dry skin, one of which was Lac-Hydrin. It made an instant difference in my skin, with good reason. It was 12% lactic acid, so it got the job done. And it burned if you had any cuticles that weren't perfect or if you applied it right after you had just shaved.

Flash forward and I'm all grown up and can get Lac-Hydrin 5 from the drugstore, without a prescription. The AHA level isn't as high, but it doesn't sting. In fact, it's non-comedogenic and fragrance-free, too. It's like the best of both worlds, super-effective like the prescription, but without the sting of the doctor visit co-pay and the 12% lactic acid. If you have really dry skin, this doesn't smell or look fancy, but it will get the job done.

Josie Maran Beautiful Nudes Shadow Collection

Josie Maran's Argan Beautiful Eyes shadows are new to me. I know they've been around, but I never got my hands on any of them. First of all, you may wonder what is actually in these shadows, especially after learning what isn't in them. They are toxin-, paraben-, cruelty- and fragrance-free. They are made of organic materials and the packaging is recyclable. What is actually in them? Argan Oil and flower and fruit extracts to start with. This allows for a really smooth product that is soft and goes on slightly differently than other powdered shadows.

I tried the Beautiful Nudes collection, which is Josie's take on the nude palette trend that has been showing up everywhere lately. This collection includes four large, gem-shaped shadows and a smaller band of a darker shadow that makes for a great liner.

These powder shadows are softer than a traditional pressed shadow. I don't know how else to describe it, other than that they are softer, as if they are more finely milled than your average pressed shadow. Perhaps it's the unique shape, the argan oil or they way they are made. Either way, softer shadows seem to mean a glossier texture on the lids, which I love. To me, these shadows give more of an expertly airbrushed look than a traditional shadow might give. I don't mean in the harsh, theatrical way, like you are a going to a Gaga concert after work. I mean in the romantic way way, like moonlight is dancing on your eyes in a soft, pretty way. Yeah. Like that. Not like Gaga.

(Liner, corner crease color, crease color, lid color, highlighter/base color)

Now that we've established that, let's take a look at what the nudes actually look like. While I prefer pretty colors, I've actually reached for this palette for the last three days. Which is saying something serious.

I have read elsewhere that the shadows are "crumbly" and are difficult to apply evenly. While they are on the soft side, I haven't experienced any crumbling. I did find that these apply best over a primer (you are using one of those, right?). I like to apply the lighter shades with a fluffy domed brush and the darker colors with a slightly stiffer fluffy brush. Then I go back with my fluffy domed brush and do a light wash of the lightest color over the whole eye to blend it out, and add a bit of additional glisten to the eye. I've had no creasing issues and they don't fade on me.

Overall, I love how they look and wear. I love the satin-y, glistening texture. I am definitely considering picking up a few more, as the palettes are available in collections of Purple, Smoke and Blues. This collection would be great for someone who works in a conservative environment, but wants to have fun with their shadow. You know, like an attorney in the peachy state of Georgia.* Thoughts?

* I am not insinuating that all attorneys in the south are conservative. I've seen movies where they are not (or they work for the Devil himself!). However, a friend of mine is a conservative southern attorney and this is perfect for her. Embracing the Messy Hair Trend: DIY Updos

If I start one more post with, "Now that my hair is longer," I might force myself to eat my own eyeballs on principle. But in all honesty, now that it is longer, it's like living with a stranger on my head, one I am still getting to know. I marvel at the fact that my hair, once shorter than if it had been shaved with a #2 (stylishly shaved, though), is now long enough to be worn UP. And since my own styling chops aren't up to snuff yet, there is no better time than to explore the trend made just for ladies like me, the messy hair updo.

And because it's supposed to look like you did it, you can't lose. There are a million tutorials online that show you how to do specific styles and I'll link to a few of them. In the meantime, let's take a quick look at some of my favorite styles that couldn't be easier. And I've given them ridiculous names because I can.

The "Harley Quinn, Medicine Woman"

Section your hair into two low pigtails. The piggies should be behind your shoulders, like a respectable adult, not on top of your ears. Now combine your piggies into a ponytail, putting the elastic slightly low on the pony. Make sure it's a little loose as well. Now pull the pony through the gap in the middle, making a pretty twist. Tuck the ends wherever you feel like it and secure the whole mess with a pretty clip or barrette. Or some of those clips that hide in your hair and hold everything up. Want fancier? Add a headband or a fascinator and you will be ready to walk a red carpet. At the very least, you're ready to leave the house in style.

The Gibson A Go-Go

While this isn't really an updo, it almost starts that way so stick with me. I just heard about the Hair Band No Heat Curls the other day on the interwebs. Always up for a DIY project, I'm pleased to announce that this worked like a charm. Granted, my hair doesn't like to bend in the back, so I had to touch that up with a Sultra Bombshell. But I also don't think I did a great job rolling it in the back. It does take a little bit of practice. I got beautiful waves and they stayed in all day, which was shocking to me, as my hair has been Thermafused. I wet my hair slightly--really I misted my hair--with UNITE's 7 Seconds Leave-In Conditioner and rolled it. The results were shiny waves in the front and hair that needed to be touched up in the back. It took me ten minutes to unroll the hair, use the Bombshell, add a headband and walk out the door. And my waves lasted all day!

The Sock Bun

After watching a video online, I fell in love with the idea. I can't do a sock bun but maybe you can, so I'll share the details. Stylist pal Natalie Lamb tried it and got great results. However, if you don't want a huge bun, try a dress sock instead of a tube sock. Here is the genius video that shows you how to do it, courtesy of Beauty Woo Me (I didn't name this one, though).

The Best Cream Blushes for Fair Maidens

I adore a cream blush. I love to build blush and sculpt cheeks and wear multiple colors at once. But every now and then, a few colors come across my vanity that give my very fair skin editorial-looking cheeks without really even trying.

What's an "editorial cheek"? You know. Those poses in the glossies where someone is on a farm, straddling a fence with sheep in the background? Or where they are wandering around, lost, in their childhood neighborhood? Where the models look pensive, or just plain angry? If you've ever spent much time poring over these photos, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The blush is barely there, understated and sculpted.

Since I have such fair skin, picking a blush that really pops is easy. Picking a blush that slightly flushes my cheeks and blends seamlessly is hard. Having that color last most of the day is almost impossible.

My favorites right now are the new Magic Smooth Souffle Blush by L'OREAL in Angelic. This faint kiss of peach makes your cheeks look like they've been shaded with a delicate flower petal (assuming you are as fair as I am). This color actually lasts for an entire day, which was quite shocking as as it's so delicate.

Another favorite is By Terry's Apple Cider Cream Blush. This slightly rosier, dustier neutral shade adds a color similar to when you gently bite your lip. It's not a full pink, just a slight flush. But the texture and the sheen make it look amazing. It's a powder-cream hybrid that leaves you with a satiny glow. Curve this color up around your eyes and back towards your hair line and you'll be impressed with how it accentuates your eyes.

I would be remiss not to mention Josie Maran's Sunset Argan Cream blush. This color is that gorgeous, very light color you see at that perfect moment during a sunset.

It gives the cheeks a dewy glow that lasts throughout the day, while Josie's Argan Oil keeps your skin looking fresh and rested.

Why stop with just a cream blush? Add a little depth to your cheek hallow or a bit of sunlight to your face with Sue Devitt's Bronzing Pressed Powder. Apply this with a fan brush for a hint of color that isn't too dark for us fair maidens.

Garnier B.B. Cream is a Great Option for the Fair

I love that we are finally catching up with the rest of the world on the whole B.B. Cream issue. Not sure what a B.B. Cream is? Basically, B.B. stands for Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm and it was created to give patients with sensitive skin (or post laser-treated skin) a lightweight coverage that also included potent skincare. Most come in a very limited skin tone range, focusing on the lighter skin tones, instead of darker ones. These balms also usually include skin-lightening ingredients, free radical protection and an SPF. The original B.B. Creams were very pigmented and provided enough coverage to conceal things like scars, blemishes and sun damage.

In the U.S., several of these B.B. Creams have launched over the past year. I've tried the ones from Dr. Jart, Boscia, Smashbox, and Too Faced. Most B.B. Creams will set you back around $25-$50, so they aren't always the cheapest new product to try. In a move that surprised a lot of us, Garnier recently threw their little green hat into the B.B. Cream ring with the launch of their Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream.

(Light/Medium)

It's only available in two shades; Light/Medium and Medium/Deep. So as usual, there isn't a huge range of people outside of pale to slightly-not-so-pale that this will work for. But, if you do fall into that category (most B.B. Creams are very limited, shade-wise), this is worth the $13. I found it to be hydrating without feeling greasy. It also provides a nice amount of coverage without feeling heavy. It even contains Vitamin C to help brighten the skin, and an SPF of 15 to prevent further sun damage. I don't know that Vitamin C on its own is a miracle, but I didn't name the product. Of course, the constant use of words like "guru" and "miracle" is seriously grating as of late. That aside, it gives a radiant, pretty finish to the skin.

On the right, I'm only wearing the B.B. Cream. Also, for those following the Saga of the Hair, I did cut the bangs. )

I really like the coverage, look and feel of this B.B. Cream. And you can't beat the price. If the color range works for you and you are curious about B.B. Creams, definitely give it a try!
