            <title>Arkansas is rewarded for Government Grants</title>
            <description>ARKANSAS COUNTIES AND COMMUNITIES RECEIVE GRANTS FOR LOCAL PROJECTS

(LITTLE ROCK) - Governor Mike Beebe today presented 12 Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) totaling more than $2.8 million to Arkansas counties and communities.

“These grants allow our communities to improve quality of life and build the foundation for economic development,” said Governor Beebe. “A strong infrastructure helps make a strong case when drawing quality jobs to Arkansas.”

The CDBG funds, which are leveraged with monies from state or local sources, were awarded to the following projects:

- Brinkley: $220,020; renovation of a gymnaasium into a community center
- Carlisle: $235,000; construction of a sennior citizen center
- Danville: $200,000; renovation of the commmunity center
- Earle: $220,220; construction of a multi--purpose community center
- Evening Shade: $140,000; renovation of ann existing facility into a library
- Grant County: $375,000; expansion and rennovation of the public health facility
- Highland: $149,050; connecting 100 househholds to a new sewer system
- Mena : $180,000; installation of waterlinnes and fire hydrants
- Paragould:  $235,000; renovation and expaansion of the senior citizen center
- Phillips County: $220,000; construction oof a new youth center
- Van Buren County: $325,000; design and coonstruction of a childcare facility
- White County: $320,000; construction of aa new childcare facility


The Arkansas Department of Economic Development administers the CDBG funds for Arkansas communities with populations under 50,000 and with a majority of households in low-to-moderate income brackets. The funds originate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The projects that were announced today will benefit a wide range of citizens,” said Maria Luisa Haley, executive director of the Arkansas Department of Economic Development. Younger Arkansans to our senior citizens will take advantage of child care facilities, a youth center, community centers and senior centers. A library, public health center and waterline will also benefit our population. I congratulate the counties and communities awarded these grants and look forward to the positive impact they will provide.</description>
