The financial boost includes a $4 million appropriation to the 106-year-old symphony's permanent endowment and a $150,000 grant to support music education programs. The Hawaiian government gave $2 million over a decade ago to establish the Honolulu Symphony Foundation, whose endowment is now approximately $6 million. The state requires the symphony to match government funds. Lynne Johnson, chair of the foundation, said Honolulu Symphony staff and board members are committed to raising the funds, saying, "our immediate goal is to expand the endowment to $14 million through planned and estate gifts and legacy gifts."
