GRAND FORKS, N.D. The Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences received one of three federal grants funding a suicide prevention network in North Dakota.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grants will bring more than $2.6 million into the state over the next three years to support suicide prevention.

The Center for Rural Health, in partnership with the American Indian Student Services, the Crisis Team, and Department of Psychology at UND and North Dakota tribal colleges and reservation suicide prevention coordinators, received a Campus Suicide Prevention Grant, with up to $75,000 per year for up to three years, to aid efforts to prevent suicide and to enhance services for students with mental health problems and substance abuse that place them at risk for suicide. The funding will be used to create a “circle of care” that allows UND officials to coordinate efforts with suicide prevention coordinators and mental health contacts on reservations.

“When American Indian students are struggling with these issues on campus they are also affected by events back home,” said Dr. Jacque Gray, the project’s director for the Center for Rural Health. “This linkage will give student support services earlier information so they can be proactive in addressing student needs so they can focus on their academic demands.

North Dakota Department of Health and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe each received Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Program grants, with up to $400,000 per year for up to three years, to support statewide and tribal activities to develop and implement youth suicide prevention and early intervention strategies that are grounded in collaborations between the public and private sectors.

According to a new release from the office of U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) announcing the grant awards, American Indians have the highest rate of suicide of all ethnic groups in the United States. Indian youth in parts of the Great Plains are 10 times more likely to commit suicide than their non-Indian counterparts.

This funding is a crucial step in addressing a problem that has affected far too many families on our reservations and rural areas, said Dorgan, who serves as vice chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. “Many American Indian youth live in Third World conditions and see no opportunities or hope for the future. I realize this is a sensitive topic, but I hope that by shining a light on teen suicide we will give strength to these young people and let them know they are not alone.
