DEQ is awarding about $475,000 in grants this year. In most cases grant recipients and/or their partners contribute some type of matching money, staff time or services.
Oregon Hospitals for a Healthy Environment -- Electronics Initiative. The City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development is receiving a $15,750 grant that will eventually reduce the amount of electronic waste coming from three major hospital systems (OHSU, Legacy Health System and Providence Health System in the Portland metro area. Coordinated by the Oregon Center for Environmental Health, the project will develop purchasing guidelines and contracting information to ensure that electronics waste from three Portland hospitals is handled responsibly. New purchasing criteria will focus on a preference for products that are manufactured with fewer toxic chemicals and metals, while new waste management procedures will be put into place for proper reuse and recycling of electronics. The project is scheduled to start this spring, and includes a $6,100 matching amount from Oregon Center for Environmental Health and the three hospital systems.
