It has come to my (Daniel's) attention that we still have a few readers of this notification service who are wondering why no lists have been posted since the October 2007 shipping list.

This blog was a Roundtable project I undertook when I was Government Publications Librarian for the Alaska State Library. I was promoted to Head of Information Services in September 2007 and for various reasons, we have not found the staff time to update this joint ASL-AkLA blog with new shipping lists. I apologize to any remaining readers for not putting up the "closed sign" here earlier.

New Salmon Database Management System

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has created a new database that should be of interest to some of the readers of this blog:

AYK Salmon Database Management System- from the website, " The ADF&G, Division of Commercial Fisheries, Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) Region has created a salmon database management system (DBMS) for public use. The goal of this system is to provide managers, researchers, and the public involved in salmon fisheries in the AYK Region with a system to enter and process new data, as well as to retrieve historical data. The AYK salmon DBMS provides access to AYK project descriptions, biological measurements of age, sex, and length, escapement data, and Norton Sound test fisheries data through this internet site. The website also includes a demonstration of extraction and reporting of subsistence and commercial harvest data for Norton Sound only."

Many valuable state records are unpublished yet available to the public through the Alaska State Archives. Members of the general public and even librarians are often at a loss to know what sorts of records are held at the State Archives.

Fortunately the Alaska State Archives publishes the Records Schedules that agencies create in collaboration with the Archives. Think of a records schedule as a document that tells you the types of things you might expect to find rather than a catalog or item-level finding aid.

2005 Annual Report: View the 2005 Annual Report in its entirety. Use either the Table of Contents or bookmarks to navigate through the document.
Introduction: The introduction provides an overview of Alaska, information on population and demographics and an explanation of how vital statistics are collected and recorded.
Births: This chapter includes tables and charts showing numbers of births and rates by census areas and Native regional corporation boundaries; births by race, marital status, age, and education of mothers; prenatal care, place of birth, and birth weight.
Fetal and Infant Deaths: This chapter includes tables showing fetal and infant deaths and mortality rates by census areas and Native regional corporation boundaries; and infant deaths by selected causes of death.
Child and Adolescent Deaths: This chapter provides specific information on deaths to children from ages 0 through 19 years of age.

The Alaska State Publication Program normally requires eight copies of every Alaska State agency produced or funded publication. Someone at the Statewide Suicide Prevention Council took this requirement very seriously and sent the Program eight pens.

The pens have three sides for easy gripping. On two of the sides it says:

While a pen isn't really a state document, the Council has an important message that I hope you will take some time to listen to. Suicide harms many more people than just the unfortunate person who sees no other way out.
