As promised, Apple released the firmware 2.1 for iPhone 2G/3G, which claimed to have big improvement on performance and stability. As a disatisfied iPhone 3G user, i upgraded my 2.02 machine immediately without second thought. The process went smooth, after long backup procedure, my iPhone flashed with firmware 2.1 within 15 minutes.

From general impression, the system response is very quick when compare with any previous 2.x firmwares. I spotted that the graphic rendering engine should be re-written or tweaked. When you have a head to head comparsion with 2.02, you can observe a big differences in the iPod coverflow effect. on 2.1, the movements are smooth and fast without lagging. I have played few minutes Super Monkey Ball, the display quality improved with more anti-alising effect. On Twitterific 1.1, scroll up/ down, cool! Best experience ever!

Another important improvement is on Safari. The Safari crash seems less frequent as before, but it did crashed…. Javascript handling seems improved. This makes us developer less headache on the web application performance.

No intensive testing on GPS performance yet, but i can sure the Cell Tower positioning and WiFi positioning performance boosted. It takes me 5 - 10s for positioning my home location by cell tower method, but the accuracy is still so so. WiFi positioning is cool! i guess there is only 50m accuracy error there.

About the question related the xgps software on 2.1 , we have sent out the testing package to xgps team for them to test. And most of the function would be ok, and we will release it by about next week. You can order now in our online store

In conclusion, 2.1 has a hugh improve on the performance and the stability, with the support of the xgps software will be release soon, most of the existing 1.1.4 users can feel free to upgrade to 2.1 . And we are also looking forward for Freemap to be able to use in iphone 2.1 soon.

It was a great day for iGPSD team as we have joined Barcamp Hong Kong 2008. It is the first public event iGPSD joined since establishment. As guess speaker in sharing session, we have shared ideas on Location Based Service (LBS), social networking, and what are the benefits for LBS to go social networking.

We have also introduced our NEW EXCITING project - Walkamap in the session! Walkamap is the key project on iPhone to provide LBS with intensive social community function. Few mock up images are presented to demonstrate how Walkamap will work.

In the session, audiences have raised lots of question on technical difficulties and business model of Walkamap.Thank you for all ideas generated and shared, we have learn a lot and have new thoughts on how to improve current Walkamap model.

Location Based Service Goes Social

Thanks for the hard working for the xgps team that has developed a software for iPhone 2.0, for those have not hear about xgps team or their software , here is some general description of their software.

You can download the Google Map on your iphone so that no more EDGE or GPRS connection is required ( unlike GPS Live that depend on original Google Map and it requires the internet connection to update )

select the area that you want to download by using two finger. and your iphone will start download the map by itself. (No computer or ssh is required)

We hear from Elad (our best customer) and some users that leave the message concern about they cannot use our cable on their cigarette charger to charge up the iPhone.  Sorry for the late reply as we need some time to carry some investigate in it.

After study on the Elad report, he said that iPhone can be charge up by using our cable connecting to computer or iPhone USB AC charger, this lead us to confirm our cable should have no problem to charge up the iPhone.

And then we knew from Elad that the user that find themselve cannot use the cable to charge up is using the cigarette charger that provide by the Holux GPS package. And we finally understand that the source problem for that is the Holux GPS cigarette charger doesn’t provide 3.3V output to both USB+ and USB- , as a result, iPhone failed to recognize that it is already connect to the power source.

And in the AC USB case, all four usb pins has power output, as a result, our cable can charge up by connecting to it.

I have contacted Elad would it be possible to offer a group purchase for the iPhone dedicate cigarette charger, so that our clients can save the shipping cost and we can fight for cheaper selling price with 10 or more charger at a time.  And clients that interested in group purchase can leave a comment here , or contact Elad. in the demo video, you can see the software can provide the search address function, the real time update on the current location, a real time route correction if you miss the turn, and the map can rotate to always pointing to your moving direction.
