Ultimately the greatest photo hosting site on the internet is being eventually removed from the planet due to lack of innovation. As a user for the last 5+ years, I have yet to see any real changes that benefit my account. Therefore, I will not be renewing my Pro account.

Here is a small breakdown of issues that Flickr needs to address to stay alive. These are issues from a user's perspective:

Lack of Search

Although Flickr has a tagging system for each photo you upload, it doesn't work well in a number of tests with Yahoo search and Flickr search. Here's an example using Yahoo:

I did a search for "petco park", and hundreds of thousands pop up. Since Yahoo would want to tap into the Flickr "TAG" system for search, since they owned them, I decided to search for "petco park high resolution". I have a photo that I uploaded in August 2011 with those exact words as TAGs, so it should show up with no problem. Well it didn't.

As you can see above, very few came up in the Large size. Although not shown, wallpaper came up with 1 result, and all sizes came up with 2 more rows of photos. Yahoo image search is broken, but it's been like that since day 1. Their "Wallpaper" filter means that any size picture can pop up, from 640x480 to 1440pix, or 2038pix. Good luck sorting them and 95% of them are 800x600 or 640x480, which render them useless as a wallpaper.

For the last few years I've noticed that images that have been on Flickr a while don't get many hits from internal search or from Yahoo search. As a user you hope to gain friends on a "social photo sharing website" and that can't happen if people never find you. Thankfully when I was active online, the majority of my photo views were from my own personal website.

Lack of Innovation

You throw a ton of money at me and I'll probably run all away to the bank and never come back. I think this is what happened when Yahoo bought Flickr. With the new leadership from Yahoo, innovation literally came to a halt. Since the purchase, the only innovative thing done that users can see is the display of photos from Contacts or a specific user's Favorite list of photos being shown in a Mosaic format, utilizing all the white space.

Of course when I needed to do a screenshot of my Contact photos as an example, Flickr suddenly had an issue with its AJAX server accessing the photos. Above is the example I'm talking about. From edge to edge is nothing but photos, with a little bit of white used to separate the photos. It's a shame this feature isn't part of the entire website.

Photo presentation lacks any innovation either. You click on a thumbnail to see it larger, but it only shows as a small photo. When you view a photo on Facebook or Google+, the viewer will attempt to fill up your screen, the larger screen/resolution, the bigger the image. On the server side, it knows what size to send the photo to the screen. Both social websites are free to use, have little restrictions on the photo size and are obviously far more social.

Focus on the Customer

Every successful company knows how important their customers are. They wouldn't be around without them. Same goes the top websites in the world, adapting to change, offering more than their competition, and having the mindset as all the other successful companies out there. If you no longer have a viable product to offer, then you will die.

Conclusion

Longterm, Yahoo and Flickr will die unless they begin innovating. Maybe not 2 or 5 years from now, but in 10 years they may be toast. Hopefully Microsoft won't buyout Yahoo for mere patents, because so far that's all they've got unless they start changing.

3 Major GPS Companies Going Out of Business Overnight

I'm a big fan of Google and its' innovations, even when they are literally putting GPS manufacturers out of business overnight. GPS manufacturers like Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan will soon feel the pain as more and more users start using Google's Map navigation software on smart phones.

Although I'm a month late for announcing it [Google Maps version 5.2], I'm shocked that there isn't enough news about it. Once you use the latest upgrade to Google maps on your phone, you will quickly get pissed off that you had bought a GPS unit for your automobile and you will rush on to eBay to try and dump it for some cash before it becomes worth the value of lint.

The companies that have the largest stake with GPS's designed to be used for the automobile are Tom Tom, Garmin and Magellan. If you have money invested in their stock, you better dump it immediately after reading this line in this article. These 3 companies have invested a great deal to supply the current demand that is still growing. This is scary for them, because they know that they will have to change their business model and products very soon, or they will have to file Chapter 11.

My Personal Experience with Google Maps version 5.2
I currently own a 5 or 6" Magellan GPS, which I have bought twice, since the first one was stolen out of my car. The Magellan unit is great. It has a large screen, great visual and voice navigation and it does exactly everything I want it to do.

When I heard about Google updating their Maps software, I decided to update my smartphone [Sprint HTC EVO] to the latest version. It was several days later that I needed it, riding with another Store Manager for a meeting we were attending. He was getting us lost, so I whipped out my phone and had Google help us.

One word, WOW! Google Maps Navigation update was a huge overhaul over the previous version. The navigation software worked much better than my Magellan, had a great screen visual and the voice navigation was amazing.

Since that great experience, I haven't pulled out my Magellan, I'm in the process of selling it. The proceeds for the unit will go towards a dashboard mount for my smartphone.

The Best Buy Effect
Google's recent update to Google Maps won't only affect GPS manufacturers, but also the brick and mortar companies that sell them. Best Buy is the best example to use in this scenario. I worked for Best Buy for 10 years and before Napster destroyed the music industry, our stores footprint was mostly taken up by music cds [about 35% of the total store's foot space]. After Napster, that dwindled down to maybe 4%.

A little later, internet speeds were finally hitting the true meaning of high speed, so software manufacturers moved their business to online, which is the reason that Best Buy doesn't carry very many titles today. If you have shopped Best Buy and paid attention, you could see each store evolve with the products they sell.

Today at Best Buy, you will notice that their mobile departments have grown in recent years. Not because car audio technology is improving, but because the mobile GPS units are growing in popularity. Today cars are being manufactured with them, and people are purchasing them to make their driving experience easier and more enjoyable.

Today at Best Buy's headquarters, they are coming up with plans for different stages to reinvent themselves again within all of their stores. Brian Dunn and his team know what's coming and they want to be ready for it. Shareholders want results and it doesn't matter that Google has dissolved an entire industry overnight.

Overview

This is only the beginning for smartphone GPSs. Soon there will be software that uses GPS information, wi-fi data information and other future smartphone features. In the very near future, you will using Google's Map Navigation for more than navigation. You will see "Check-in" software integration into the Navigation, so you can see your friends' current location on the map too.

TabletPCs are a hot ticket right now and they can be used as GPS unit too. You will start seeing people use these units as a large screen GPS.

Mark my words, you will start seeing changes soon, as more and more people buy smartphones. It was just a matter of time before this was going to happen. Save your money, don't buy a GPS, use that cash towards a better cellphone.

***Update 12/09/2011***
Today Engadget.com posted an article about TomTom downsizing their company by 10% due to lack of sales.

"TomTom will focus primarily on in-dash navigation equipment that's pre-installed by automotive manufacturers, along with fleet management for delivery companies."

Just under 9 months after writing this article, we are witnessing the first casualty from the free navigation provided by Google.

Touch Book - Amazing Netbook That You'll Want to Buy

You gotta love advancements in technology, especially when you see the Touch Book, created by Always Innovating Inc. They will be offering 2 different models, tablet only or netbook [tablet and keyboard]. The tablet only will run for $300 and the tablet+keyboard will run for $400.

It has so many abilities, more than I can describe, so I posted a video of a demo for the device. For the price point and the abilities, you can be sure that this will be a hot item in the near future.

Keep in mind the battery life. They're pitching the battery life of 10-15 hours, but that's only for the netbook version of it. The tablet only version lasts 3-5 hours.

More Bad Press For HFCS [high fructose corn syrup]

Mercury was found in nearly 50 percent of tested samples of commercial high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a new article published today in the scientific journal, Environmental Health. A separate study by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popular brand name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled ingredient-including products by Quaker, Hershey's, Kraft and Smucker's.

HFCS use has skyrocketed in recent decades as the sweetener has replaced sugar in many processed foods. HFCS is found in sweetened beverages, breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americans consume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS. Consumption by teenagers and other high consumers can be up to 80 percent above average levels.

"Mercury is toxic in all its forms," said IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author in both studies. "Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply."

For its report, shown above and a MUST READ, "Not So Sweet: Missing Mercury and High Fructose Corn Syrup," IATP sent 55 brand-name foods and beverages containing HFCS as the first or second ingredient to a commercial laboratory to be tested for total mercury. Nearly one in three products tested contained detectable mercury. Mercury was most prevalent in HFCS containing dairy products, followed by dressings and condiments. Attached is the summary list of the 55 products and their total mercury content.

In making HFCS, caustic soda is used, among other things, to separate corn starch from the corn kernel. For decades, HFCS has been made using mercury-grade caustic soda produced in industrial chlorine (chlor-alkali) plants. The use of mercury cells to produce caustic soda can contaminate caustic soda, and ultimately HFCS, with mercury.

"The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury," said Dr. Wallinga. "The good news is that mercury-free HFCS ingredients exist. Food companies just need a good push to only use those ingredients."

While most chlorine plants around the world have switched to newer, cleaner technologies, many still rely on the use of mercury cells. In 2005, 90 percent of chlorine production was mercury-free, but just 40 percent of European production was mercury-free. Four U.S. chlor-alkali plants still rely on mercury cell technology. In 2007, then-Senator Barack Obama introduced legislation to force the remaining chlor-alkali plants to phase out mercury cell technology by 2012.

SweetSurprise.com - Funny Propaganda

The newest American propaganda being pitched isn't happening in Iraq or Afghanistan, but here in the good ol' USA and guess what, as tax payers, we're probably paying for the entire ad campaign!

Recently on television there is a new marketing campaign to change American's views on High Frutose Corn Syrup [HFCS], with ads asking you to visit SweetSurpise.com which redirects you to HFCSfacts.com. The major pitch is that HFCS has the SAME effect on obesity AS SUGAR.

The propaganda surfaced because food manufacturers have begun choosing not to add HFCS to their products and also marketing that same fact on their packaging. American consumers who are becoming wiser, are adding pressure to food manufacturers, choosing healthier organic foods over the HFCS injected products. A helpful documentary called "King Corn", has opened the minds of many Americans, opening up the truths about corn manufacturing and the process of making HFCS. In December 2007, I wrote about "King Corn", "The Omnivore's Dilemma", which is an amazing book discussing what we choose to eat today. Cargill [the creator of the HFCS market], a private company working closely as lobbyists with the US Agriculture Department, was also discussed in our article.

HFCS does add to the obesity problem in the US, there's no mistaking that. The American Medical Association walks around this issue, by comparing it as safe as sugar and not agreeing with the fact that most of our foods are much sweeter than 20 years ago. You can figure this on your own by visiting your local grocer. Read the ingredients label on the product and look at the amount of servings, how many grams of sugar, than do a little math. Remember that a single sugar packet at your local IHOP contains 3 grams of sugar. Here's an older article I wrote about doing the math with the ingredients. The photos in the article speak volumes!

With all the truths out there, Walter Willett still came out with a stupid quote[pictured above] on HFCS and obesity. All I can say is that Walter Willett is an idiot, which is scary, considering he's from Harvard School of Public Health. I love the fact that Walter chose to use the words "...no substantial evidence..."considering that most products in your grocery store contain large amounts of HFCS.

I don't know how many articles I'll need to write before more people start listening. The extensive consumption of sugar and HFCS isn't healthy for any American, that's a fact. Ignore the propaganda and start watching what you eat and how much you consume, it will change your life. HFCS will never die, but the demand for it will decline as more and more Americans realize health risks with HFCS and sugar with over consumption will become hazardous to your health.

For all the bloggers out there, continue spreading the word on HFCS, the people are starting to listen. Hopefully more change will happen to improve our health and put a dent into Cargill's foothold on HFCS.

It can be history, good or bad, but you must watch. I am not a history major by any means, I nearly failed it in school, but learned it traveling the world. When you pay attention, you learn, and I'm not talking about a classroom but the world around you.

Personally I ask all forms of media to interrupt their regular broadcasting specifically for this event, because that's what the people of the United States of America are asking for. For those living in their own world, it would send a great message that the media united for the hope of change in this country.

I decided to write this post after an ad posted by Facebook.com, which is shown above. A simple poll to see if and how you would watch the Inauguration. This is the first ad I clicked on in the last 10 years on the web and I was surprised by the results. Not by how, internet or tv, but the fact that 38% voted "no" to watching it all together. That 38% that have already voted are not a hair on shit, but in fact....completely clueless idiots. I picked tv b/c I'm flying to my parents house to watch, but normally, I would have picked both to test lag and ISP speeds, but it wasn't an option anyways.

Good news, bad news on the actual poll: Was the poll marketed to the US market only? My guess is "yes" because of the amount of poll votes, 78,000+ [Source of the Poll]. Facebook internationally is the largest social website on the planet. The bad news is that 38% of people actually decided to skip the historical speech. Obviously commonsense wasn't involved.

You can love or hate Barack Obama. You can be of any race or even a racist. Today you have to realize that we're in a depression, today you have to pay attention to what effects all of us. Today you have to pay attention to history. If you don't, you'll become that person that never changes and is ridiculed behind your back for being so lost with the world, from your own blood to your neighbors. Don't be a joke, pay attention to the world and watch the speech that may or may not move America, either way, it'll be historical.

Splash Page Still Down

I recently got off the phone with my hosting company out in Utah, and my server/MySQL problem has reached higher levels at tech support. Problem with the lastest upgrade of MySQL that has caused the problem. I won't bore you with the details.

As for the website, you can still visit the links on this blog site or the links directly on Gr8tFate.com, but no access to the splash page. So sorry. We won't be uploading any new pictures until the server issue is resolved. Good news is when we're back up and running, we'll have thousands of photos to upload, especially because we will be adding a few more popular female celebrities. We won't say who, in hopes of you checking back later.

We're also contemplating posting smaller galleries of other female celebrities [but still in HQ] on our Wordpress software on our main website, to test out load speeds, functionality and layout. We've looked at other photo software we can host other than Coppermine, but although Coppermine's PHP software has a slow load time, the overall functionality is still far more superior than others we've checked out recently.

We'll keep you updated with any new news, and we apologize for the poor user experience we're providing at the moment.

Server Down - Upgrading the Server

*Update* Upgrade will take longer than planned, due to the storage size we have on the old server. The best we can tell you is "soon".

*2nd Update* It's been 12 hours, and I just got off the phone with my hosting company, still no exact eta on when the server will be back up. I'm beginning to feel guilty for two reasons, because of the amount of data we have on the server. 1st, it's a shared server, so I feel bad for the other websites probably going through the same pains as we are. 2nd, for the IT guys having to transfer all that data and the multiple SQL servers I had set up. Hopefully it'll be back up before I leave for work, which is in 3 hours.

Dipity.com Good, Twitter.com Bad

Internet functionality is important, along with features, so I decided to talk about two specific websites, Twitter and Dipity. I'm a fan of useful websites that provide content publishing in various forms, the more visual the better. How websites choose to provide these abilities will determine their shelf life, short or long. Before analyzing the two website, since they are truly different and offer different features, I thought I'd give you short description of them.

Twitter.com

Twitter allows users to post text updates via SMS, instant messaging, email, Twitter’s website and third party applications. Users have their own profile page that displays their latest updates. In addition, users can become “friends” with one another, or simply be a “follower.” Other than reading another person’s profile page, a user can also receive others’ updates through text messages, RSS or third party applications.

Dipity.com

Dipity is a consumer site that organizes articles, blog posts, pictures, videos and other content from around the web into interactive views showing anything from a user’s life to the Iraq War. Dipity allows users to work with content directly, or automatically pull highly relevant content from socially-curated sites like YouTube, Wikipedia, Digg and others using RSS and API integrations. Once created, the interactive widget stays up-to-date, and can be embedded in blogs, social networks, and websites to add an interactive, engaging element to any site.

There is a very large drawback that Dipity.com which we must address, which is their widget should be in a different format than iFrame. WordPress isn't a supporter of iFrame [which is why we posted this here instead of our homepage] and with Wordpress being the most popular content management software, it's important to provide to such a large audience. Dipity rocks, as long as it benefits everyone. Until they support Wordpress, they have a tough hill to climb.

My views of both Companies

Dipity is a service, Twitter is a plugin, that's the best way for me to compare both companies. Twitter is the most popular of the two, hands down, but content providers will love Dipity for its' abilities. Twitter has become popular through many tech-heads using it and promoting, although Twitter has had many difficulties keeping their website up on several occassions [our articles in past: "Twitter.com - Socially Sucks", follow-up "Idiots Still Pushing Twitter".

Twitter's features are now built into Facebook, cutting out the middleman, hence my "plugin" description of Twitter. Looking longterm, it's a scary thought for Twitter to move ahead in the future, when popular websites are integrating Twitter's abilities right on their own website. You write a short snippet of what you're doing, and you can update it frequently.

From a content provider point of view, Dipity offers a visual package, bringing all your different content to one specific window for viewers, called a widget. Below is an example of Dipity's widget showcasing our content. Twitter's service may find a way to benefit businesses within their own networks, but from a traditional consumer's point of view, Twitter is worthless.

Story Line : Bolt, a German Shepherd, has lived his whole life on the set of his action TV show, where he believes he has superpowers. When separated from the studio by accident, he meets Mr. Mittens (actually a female cat) and a hamster named Rhino. Along the way, he learns that he doesn't have superpowers and that the show is not realistic.

As a large fan of animation/CGI, it's a lot of fun getting pictures from movies because of the quality and the detail.
