Its time I came back to life as it were. I have been very busy, life has changed a bit since I last blogged, and I hope to make that news clear as I go along here. I hope that you are still interested!

Let's see, I had closed my shop on SE Main Street when I last blogged, I think. It's been tough since then, I really, really miss my store and all that I tried to accomplish there. Since July 2012, I've come to realize all that I did get to do and I miss all of my friends terribly.

I've made new friends too, but the Irish has been my passion since 2001 when I first associated myself with them through my friends at the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Since I joined, I've lost some wonderful friends. Men I will miss forever. Frank Stapleton, Jim Ryan, John O'Neil (I joined with him on the same night). So many more. I actually was their Vice President and then President all in the space of 5 years. I need to get back to them, if they will have me.

Not that I haven't had anything to do. I have worked at a home health company in Lees Summit, called Home Instead Senior Care. Wonderful ladies for sure And I've been busy with our Downtown Lees Summit Emerald Isle St. Patrick's day Parade too. Here's a link to a You Tube video this year:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csZoUU-AEzw
I got to be interviewed by Cynthia Newsome this year and really enjoyed it!

Anyway. More to come later! Stay with me!

The "First Foot"

A dear friend of mine, Ann Beno, from Dublin Ireland, told me a neat story, a custom really in Ireland. It's called the First Foot. On New Year's Day in Ireland, you have to honor the first person in your door with a slice of fruit Cake and a glass of wine. Nice enough, but that person is traditionally a tall, dark-haired male; a female or fair-haired male are in some places regarded as unlucky. The first-foot usually brings several gifts, including perhaps a coin, bread, salt, coal, or a drink, which respectively represent financial prosperity, food, flavor, warmth, and good cheer.

The first footer can be the owner of the house, as long as it's a male, but he must leave the house before the stroke of midnight, and come back in to be the first foot in the door after midnight. (also dark-haired and fair skinned). This is all to ensure prosperity and happiness in the coming year.

May your first footer come quickly after the stroke of midnight, in order that you can retire and begin this new year all the sooner!

Then Halloween has come and gone already. TODAY in Lee's Summit, it's the Christmas Traditional open house weekend. Where did the enjoyment of the fall color go? Where is Thanksgiving in all of this? Well, I am going to squeeze all the fun out of Fall that I can. I've taken a couple of excellent walks through Unity Village and found splendor that i never knew existed, all within 2 miles of my front door. We've lived in the shadows of Unity Village for over 20 years and never knew what we had. I can't wait now, for Spring. Free entertainment and beauty; camera - ready waiting for me to get there.

I am working on Christmas for the shop. I love my business. I love my customers. I hope that they feel it when they come in. I want my shop to provide the feeling and fun that I experienced in Innis, Ireland when I went shopping for my family. I wanted to experience shopping in the Irish way. SO my shop does look like a store in Innis. I just want my people to get what they want, as I did in Ireland. I want my shop jam-packed to the rafters, (which you can see in my shop, by the way). But in this current day and age, we don't have everything here that I want. I know that we'll get there. It's my passion. Many don't share that passion. Sometimes my kids tell me that I need to close up and just stop. Sometimes I listen and think it over. But, taking after my dad's Irish family, I also have German influences from my mom, and I can be pretty determined. I just don't want to give up.

I pray that my customers will continue to come in and continue to be patient. I hope that my kids will someday see that my persistence is a character trait that they should emulate too. I'd love nothing more than to plan a trip with my family to go to Ireland and see the places that I've seen, and to maybe walk where members of our families have walked. Anyway - that's what I want...let's see what I get!

Our little Elise has been a shop girl since before her birth date. This is because she was born so very early. By the time her mom had to go back to work, it was still before her normal birth date. I got the opportunity to provide day care, and have been doing just that for months now. We get along famously. She's a favorite on the block with customers, the mailman, delivery men and the other vendors on the block. She's just awesome.

Well, come by when you can. If you do not see something that you thought that you should - let me know. I can find almost anything. I'd rather find something you need than not see you at all!!

Slainte and Nollaig Shonna Dhuit!

Our little guest is here early , and we haven't got ready!

My favorite daughter, Kristin called me last Wednesday, the day before St Patrick's Day to say,"Dad!! I have to go to the hospital right now! My blood pressure is high and there's some other things going on and they want me now, can you go with me?" I told her that I would of course, and asked her to meet me at our house. Had I known how serious this was, I would have told her to just lay down and I'd get there. But I didn't.She got to the house and we made it to St. Mary's in Blue Springs. We were eventually told that there was serious protein in her urine and her BP was something like 201/190...AWFULLY high. Stroke levels. But Kristin said that she felt perfect;y normal. They told us that our girl was going to give birth in a matter of days. WAIT!! She isn't due till June. Regardless, that baby needs to be here, not there and now!

Kristin was taken by ambulance to St Luke's on the Plaza in KC. After examinations head to toe, it was determined that the baby had to be prepped for C Section delivery. She was given a drug to fortify her lungs. Kristin was gicen Magnesium to both help the baby and to keep Kristin form stroking out. This was taking place so quickly. They were maintained for 2 days, and then on the day AFTER ST. Patrick's Day, delivery procedures were started. Oh My God!!

The family who could gather did, Jim was there all the Grandparents...that's us and Margaret and Dennis Lynch were there supporting each other. Margaret & I said a rosary silently. Eventually Jim came out to tell us that Elise was here, and that Kristin was being attended to, we could see them shortly. We did see Kristin and told her how proud we were and glad that this part - although waaay early, is now behind her. Together we look forward to watching and helping Elise to grow and be a part of our families. We are so prouod.

Our Little Bird as I call her, is doing very well. This is Thursday, almost a week later, and she has passed so many tests. She is off the respirator and C-PAP, breathing pretty much on her own, with a cannula device to remind her if she forgets. But jaundice fears are pretty much gone, she is eating thru a little srynge, all systems are go, she just needs to grow. Today, she's at 1 pound, 9 ounces, having lost an ounce or so over night. This will be up and down. But she's drinking some rich good stuff her momma found, and all's well. She's rested on Kristin's chest and liked it so much she would not calm down when they came to take her to her incubby. She was pissed!!! (I liked that) - she has a nickname in the NICU - Miss Firecracker. She has an attitude!! Awwwlright! That's my girl!
Plans for the new year...

Survive and grow the shop ( survived so far)

Sucessfully plan and execute the 5th anniversary Emerald Isle parade - bigger and better!( 6th n ow done)

Help Renata to start a Gaelic Language class in Lees Summit (Renata has a job elsewhere now)

Continue the Kerry Book Club in my shop and provide more interesting reading (back again this summer)

Have another music session or two in my shop (not yet)

Bring irish music to Lees Summit's Downtown days this summer ( harder that I expected - not yet)

Make my vision of being a tea merchant in my shop more of a reality than a whim or a part time venture. (did it and still growing nicely)

Help to marry our daughter to Jim Lynch this spring. (April 10 at St. Mark's in Independence) (Done!)

Attend the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas and spend nothing in slot machines, but learn a lot about the tea trade and develop more vendor contacts.(Couldn't afford it)

That should do me in!!! (it did not)

More news, Kristin delivered a teeny tiny baby girl on March 18. Elise Marie Lynch 13 inche3s long, 1.10 lbs. We are confident that she will flourish. Ask me about her struggle and success. So proud of all 3 in this little family! Can't wait to get them home. I really do intend to journalize...stuff, but I let life take me on with it down the stream of life's course, and then, getting lost in the current, my plans vanish. But I think that it would be good to let anyone who is interested in knowing what my plans for 2011 are for the shop.

I still intend to bring anyone who comes in to see us as much fun as they are willing to have. This past Saturday was a fine example. I had a ton of folks coming out to see us - not just because it was the Chocolate Crawl, but because they - like myself - have had enough of the 4 walls around them. We HAD to get out. We had to have some human interaction with persons other than the normal husband or wife, son or daughter that we normally see. I truly enjoyed explaining the meaning of what Cead Mile Failte means. I love explaining the meaning of the Claddagh. I have patiently waited all month long for my "peeps" to come back and to see us. I just wish that I had more to show and tell. One day.. I will!

In the meantime, we are getting folks interested in loose teas and tea instruments. I am learning more and more. Actually I am learning what all I do no know. But I do know that teas are a wonderful thing to study and to taste. What a terrific job I created for myself. And what fun I am having!!

Come out and see what we have to offer and buy an ounce of a new loose leaf tea, or an unusual accessory to help you enjoy tea to your best advantage!!

Soirce!
Peace!
Even today, I've only had 3 people in to see me. It's Tuesday and Very hot. It was hot yesterday too but I had something like 18 people in the shop. My good friend Ann Beno purchased tea (and looked after some other customers who came in at the same time - offering tea and conversation), and a new friend made a decision to purchase a beautiful wedding ring for his wife of 25 years.

With so few customers coming in, I've started to listen to those few people who ask, "why did you decide to open an Irish store?" "Why in Lees Summit?" Well, my answer to those people is why not? Why shouldn't I have a dream too? For 30+ years I did the right and correct thing. I had a corporate job. I held my tongue when it was expected to be held. I didn't react in my own way when the company way was the best course of action. This has been my dream. This is my passion, and I make no apologies for it. I will have to answer to someone someday, but it will be MY answer. And I don't think that I will have any serious explaining to do when that day does come. I'm as honest as the day is long, as true a friend as you'll ever have.

I've made my own friends, and my friends have become a part of my family so I feel particularly blessed to have this Irish Store. I am particularly blessed to have the friends that I have, and no, you can't count them on a FaceBook counter.

Why am I ranting? I just think that it's a crummy question to ask a person..."Why did you decide to do THIS?" So don't ask me. If you have to ask, you don't know me. So, I will keep my store in Lees Summit right where it is today. I am NOT closing in October. as someone's kindly spreading around. But I am not going to the KC Irish Fest, and that is seriously depressing to me.

I am serious about our on-line store this time. I want it to succeed, and by succeed I simply mean that I want to pay some bills. So - spread the word about the on-line shop. Or just click here: http://www.DSTreats.com and then tell someone else. Let someone else know that there is an Irish Goods store that you are familiar with. If you like it, tell them that. If you don't - then let them figure that out on their own, but send them there.

Yeah, regular - just like that!

No - I didn't intend to wait 4 months between postings! Life just happens.

Here it is after Christmas, and for the first time in my 56 years, I didn't even get to give my mom a Christmas hug. Snow happened! I haven't seen her yet! I will slug the next person I meet who says that they want a white Christmas! Bah! Humbug!

But it was pretty. I just hated the worry that someone leaving wasn't going to make it back in the condition that they left in. I didn't like hearing the phone ringing when someone was out there on the crazy roads that still remain relatively roughly tended to. I know that things are tight, and I respect the people who went out to clear the roads on Christmas day. I resent the budget constraints that didn't allow for more folks to be hired to do the work.. To spread the work further, faster. Anyway - that's enough complaining!

Plans for the new year...

Survive and grow the shop

Sucessfully plan and execute the 5th anniversary Emerald Isle parade - bigger and better!

Help Renata to start a Gaelic Language class in Lees Summit

Continue the Kerry Book Club in my shop and provide more interesting reading

Have another music session or two in my shop

Bring irish music to Lees Summit's Downtown days this summer

Make my vision of being a tea merchant in my shop more of a reality than a whim or a part time venture.

Help to marry our daughter to Jim Lynch this spring. (April 10 at St. Mark's in Independence)

Attend the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas and spen nothing in slot machines, but learn a lot about the tea trade and develop more vendor contacts.

That should do me in!!!

Have a beautiful New years and a wonderful 2010!
Siochain! - Peace
Come on - venture out!! Come out and play!!

I did have a nice visit from my oldest friend, Tutti Nesselroad. She walked all the way to the shop from Greenwood. She comes to town every month carrying her egg basket and shopping bag. I took her picture this time. She was looking for a Celtic Cross pendant, and luckily I had one for her. I can't believe that she walks all that way. I can't imagine how old she is. (AND I know better than to ask her).

Anyway - come on out when you can. I know that you will. If Tutti can walk all the way from Greenwood, I know that you can drive on out and see us!

Oh, and before I forget, the Easter Bunny came out to visit too. He's on Twitter now. That's what he came out to tell me. So yeah, I follow him now too. I am so sorry about the Twitter name I chose...I was undeer pressure to get one, and I was watching a really funny movie at the time, the one with "McLovin" in it...and I picked McStud. I mean it's just so cool to see thousands of our neighbors and friends turn out to see a few hundred (alright, it was 850) people dress funny and do odd things to their cars and trucks, in the name of St. Patrick. I am so proud of Lees Summit, its a blessing to live and work here. Others call us the Olathe of Missouri, the Lenexa of the east. I think its just funny that they can't recognize us for what we are...Lee's Summit. We're the Lees' s Summit of Missouri, and that's good enough.

One thing that I can't understand, though, is that we can't get any media types to come here and take a look at us. We deserve our time in the sun too. I studied the demographics before I set up shop here five years ago, so I know how Irish we are here. But I also know that you can't beat the swelling I get in my chest when our Emerald Isle parade winds its way up Green Street, and we pass the wonderful parade fans who literally move their living room furniture outside to watch the parade as we go by. And when the parade turns the corner from Green Street to Third, OH MY GOD!!! - you just can't imagine the feeling of seeing thousands of our Lee's Summit friends and neighbors waiting for us. Its a beautiful thing. Lee's Summit IS A BEAUTIFUL thing! Thank YOU!

So, watch us next year, from the curb, or from your front yard. We're that kind of town. We're a Lee's Summit family sort of town!

Oh, and my family...I love you all. My people came out from all over. I'm a Kansas native - yessir, Wyandotte County Kansas City Kansas born and bred. My people came and felt comfortable enough to pitch in and help and march and become a part of our community too. Catch us next year...watch out Kelly O'Casper...and keep your eyes peeled, Green Family, my family is looking to win a trophy too!!!

Next season: Matters of the heart

Sorry, but that's what happens in retail. I didn't get to go to Kindergarten, s0 first grade was my first opportunity to experience it. And I had major loves in first grade. I even remember their names. So Sorry, Nancy Morgan, and Barbara Monchil, and Tanya Estrada, and Michelle Hoegler...Yeah, they were serious back then... I planned their valentines with all the angst that a 6 year old boy could muster. My printing on the backs of those 1959 Hallmark valentine cards was executed with the precision of a brain surgeon. It made for a very fun day. It must have. I still remember their names.

But now, now that I'm an old married man - 33 years, Valentines Day is simply a day to remember to get the ol Hallmark credit card out again. You can't possibly take in all that they have to accomplish in a year's time. To look at the task of re-creating a wonderful, traditional event with such enthusiasm and creativity every year has to leave them breathless. Yet they do it. Flawlessly, I think. And can you imagine what it takes to coordinate with representatives of the City in every respect and discipline, all Irish groups, all vendors, the police, legal agencies, merchants along the route, the Media, oh God, it's really too much to even think about.

I know a very little bit, I've served in a tiny way as a Hibernian rep to the parade committee. They were so very kind, super fun, and considerate. I liked every member of the committee that I came into contact with. I wished I could have been more helpful. But trust me, they have it all under control.

I took what I learned by observation to my little Lee's Summit Emerald Isle Parade. We do pale in comparison in terms of the sheer number of folks that have to be coordinated with. The size of our parade is tiny in relationship to the "Big Parade." But we do match them in spirit. We run our parade with a small team of 10, all responsible of crosschecking eachother to ensure that all of our work tasks are handled, and creative urges are looked at and either allowed or tabled till next year. We're a small but enthusiastic bunch.

This year the parade will step off at 1:00 as last year, on Saturday, March 14. Hopefully, we will not have the bone-chilling freeze that we shared with the Big Parade last year. It was so cold then that our talent, The Lucky Charms, and Flanigan's Right Hook, could only play for a few minutes of their sets. We really missed out last year. But never say die, we'll have some talent this year too.

Just watch out for us. March 14. The Lees Summit Emerald Isle Parade will step off in style.

Sorry for the absence...we've been in hell for Christmas.

It has certainly been an interesting year. I've turned into one of those folks who, when you make the mistake of saying:" How have you been?" you get more than you really want to hear... Cause I'm gonna give the the shorthand..."It was fine."

We lost my wife's oldest sister in February due to kidney disease. My father - in - law, Mr. Harold Cullum passed away right at Christmas time, making our holiday season quite gloomy. There were 2 empty seats at our Christmas Dinner this year. So, we're just glad that Christmas has gone back into its many many boxes and back into the basement till next year.

On a GREAT upswing, our daughter, Kristin was engaged to Mr. Jim Lynch on Christmas eve. Yes, he's IRISH... and Italian. What a fun party that will be! More on that later!

Meantime, its time for taxes and inventory and ordering for the new year at Doherty & Sullivan's. Its our 5th year. That's where I've been. Lee's Summit has had several activities lately, some very very good. Octoberfest was 2 weeks ago!! We had to had I'd say 30 or more folks in the shop at a time. New and old friends, it was great to see everybody. I loved the Ooom Pa music that boomed just outside my front door. No, really, I liked it a lot. I can still hear and feel it. Could be because of the Bauer blood mixed in the Sullivan blood runnin in my veins. It was a lot of fun, and no, I had ZERO beer. But not because I didn't want any. Here's a pic of what it looked like outside my shop. Looks a little grim...

Seriously, they raised the curtains and we had a great time interacting with everyone. Can't wait till the next one.

We had a great time at the Irish Fest this year. We had the best spot at the Fest, directly accross from the main entrance at Crown Center. Folks that we see at the shop followed us down to the fest. It's just like family reunion time. We also introduced ourselves to new friends too, hope to see them back home soon. Up above is a shot of Annette Denton and Becky Sue at the booth. (My family was so helpful and more importantly FUN! ) Thanks to Jay & Annette and my cousin Becky Sue Hartman and my mom and her sisters Dot and Becky. Gary and Theresa and theiur kids helped too, so it was a family event along with my Janet, Kristin, Neil and Colin. Again, can't wait till next year.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lsirish.blogspot.com/2008/10/what-july-where-have-i-been.html' title='What??? Pax Wholesome Foods in NYC. Janet and I love this place. She loves the convenience of getting out and shopping and then topping off the day with a nice pizza slice, and then jumping the bus for Jesey to the hotel. I love pax for the danger. I love their pizza and paninis. But the danger is if I am going to make it outta there without consuming real New York Cheesecake or not. Oh God it looks so good. I think about it the whole year until we go back. Their cookies are to dream about. My dad used to make Macaroons. Theirs are chocolate and just unbelieveable and cause great memories!

I think that it also has to do with the fact that you 're within a mile of Times Square and the Theatre District. Next year, we're going to try to get into Saturday Night live. (But only after a Reuben panini and a piece of strawberry Cheese cake heaven)! Ordering each of the new Belleek items and Reed and Barton Christmas ornaments for our showing later in the month.

At first, I was skeptical about just having one of each available ornament in the shop. I thought that the only correct way to retail is to have robust amounts of everything in my back room shelves. Since I have NO backroom, or shelves, this is the second best way to handle our situation. As I get into this process, I found that ordering for each customer was really fine as far as my folks went. Besides - this way ensures that they will have a nice new ornament ready when they are. And it's a fun excuse to have Christmas cookies and stuff in the shop for folks to graze on. I've already sent out my electronic invitations, and am working on my postcards now, but if you get neither, don't stay away. Come to the shop, July 30 & &31st and or August 1 during our regular hours.
We may h

We may have JUST what you need for your 2008 Christmas Decorating!

(At least I know that you love our Irish shortbread cookies!) Now, it's summer and whole lot of things to happen.

We've been to NYC and back. We've suffered through "Streets Alive" in downtown Lee's Summit...(it wasn't really). We had a great galloping Lady's Nite Out, and wish we could do that weekly. It was like a Christmas rush day. I have Amy Robertson from Cameron's to thank for that. They plan and execute Lady's Nite Out. This is their event. The Tominia's are such generous people, I am honored to know them. Amy devised the evening so that the 500 ladies who shopped all day on Saturday had a form to fill out. At each of the participating stores, we had chosen a secret word. To get the word, you had to visit each store and write down the word next to the participating shop's name. (Like playing Password!) Once the form was completed, the 500 ladies had to return the form. Did Amy tell them to come back to her store? NO. She had them end the day at Doherty & Sullivan's to submit their form. They sure didn't have to do that, but they did. Amy's my pal! So are Sue & Steve. They can do no wrong as far as I am concerned.

So now that that's done, we need to spark interest in Lee's Summit thru the hot summer months. That will be tough, but like I always said, the hardest work comes after that last promotion. The party is the easiest. It's the clean-up that's tough to keep motivated for.

Irish Fest - I'm working on it. Having family over to plan our strategy. I will have a room at the Hyatt to keep everyone refreshed and also to sleep over in. Our tent size won't change. At least this year. Not happy about it, but there is no way to create space from nothing. But we'll have a blast anyway. It's gotten to be a tradition that I look forward to, Janet and me and brother Jay and sister Annette meet us at the Fest grounds and unload. They get us set up in time to open by 5:00 and we work that first night. I think that I enjoy that first nite the best. The excitement and anticipation of what is going to happen the next couple of days. Having Jay and Annette the first day, the folks who come out just to see US and the new folks who learn about us. It's Awesome. Hey, look for us. Don't know yet where we'll be, but we'll be there.

Post Market trip to New York

We had a great time in New York City again this year. We went up with expectations of looking for children's clothes, and we did find some great deals, but also we'll have some surprises built in for the rest of the year, at least up until Christmas time. Keep checking in.

We saw a fleeting glimpse of Pope Benedict. We were walking down Park Avenue, feeling really out of place, when Janet mentioned all of the policemen. We figured that it had to have something to do with the Pope's visit, but we couldn't be lucky enough to be in the right place and time. But we were.

A neat thing has begun to happen to us. We somehow have attracted the attention of folks outside of the metropolitan area. Love it! Check on the blog site, and you can tell where people sign in from. You'll see Dublin, Boston. Cork, wherever someone decides to check in, they leave me a footprint in my sand. Neat!

Well, be on the lookout next month for Downtown Days. I'm told that there will be 80,000 people Downtown Lee's Summit, here for shopping, music and food and drink. I hope that if you're one of them, that you'll drop by for a visit. And if you can't visit, pitch in and help!!!

Till next time....

Slainte
Chuck

Is it Spring yet?

I can't tell... We've come through March and now into the April showers bring May flowers thing and - well I think that I heard that it's gonna snow again out here Saturday. THAT figures! We're leaving Saturday to go to NYC for our shopping pilgrimage. THEN, it gets nice here and guess what it's doing in NYC (not counting Pope delays and detours)...no, not snow, but a ton of rain. This is what Irish luck is. It's not really luck, but the absence of it.

Oh well, at least we'll get to see some old friends and see some neat places. We're even going to try the subway all over town. I guess you don't TRY it, you do it or get off it. We're going to go to the Columbus Park Green Flea Market. It's a huge tented area where a lot of vendors sell just a lot of 'stuff' for nothing. That's just about what my budget is right now...nothing.

Then we'll take another subway crosstown to the East Side. On the east side is Bloomingdales, and we'll go there for a few minutes or so and then on further east to Serendippity's. That's the place where they make those Frrrozen Hot chocolate desserets. Yes, I am going to...

Then lastly, we're going to a place called McSorley's. Kerry Browne told me about it and I am going there for the experience of it. She called it an off boaters place. The phrase caught me ear, so I am going to go see what it is. I know that it's in a part of the City that is very old. Maybe either our Greman or Irish Great Grandpas stoppped there before taking the train to Kansas City Kansas and settling within a block of each other...Uh huh.

Anyway, we will have a good time, and Aunt Shirley and a good friend of mine, Mary Concklin will be working the shop Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, so if you're in the neighborhood, stop by to see them. I don't know how I kept up when I worked for Bell. I certainly FEEL busier, retired.

IF you are reading my blog, I hope that you remember our Emerald Isle parade on March 15. It will be a great Saturday, weather permitting. And if you'd like to be actually in the parade, just give me a call at 816 524-7151. We're looking for High School bands. None of the Lee's Summit Schools are interested in community events for some reason. We will have students from O'Hara, including their principal, Mr Bowman, who will serve as a judge for us, along with Mr. Dale Hartley, who was the Grand Marshall last year.

If you feel that the blog is of interest, feel free to let me know. You can reply from the blog screen. Buck - you have certainly been an uplift for me.
