Art and Science just seem to be antagonistic concepts. In fact, we can find unique aesthetical qualities on several objective, rigid, geometric and mathematical shapes. The American artist Bathsheba Grossman chose the bronze to materialize complex three-dimensional geometric figures. It could be a class of Math.

The way she works is more interesting than the final product. Usually, she puts her sculptures on a geometric standard basis that it is repeated and interlaced in circular zones. The found figure invariably obeys to rotational symmetry rules -- it means that a three-dimensional object starts repeating its shape as it goes round along of a symmetry axis. The possible variations are huge -- almost infinitive.
On very developed patterns, this property can be verified in more than one rotation axis. The more symmetry conditions an object has, the more elegant and cleansing is its shape, getting it closer of the elemental geometric solids like the cube, the tetrahedron, octahedron, the dodecahedron or the icosahedron. Sometimes, the rules are very simple like, for instance, three rotations of 180º in each of the coordinated perpendicular axes.

In the middle of all of this, it is hard to mentally visualize the object and, above all, to find a representation system which allows to create a model to serve as a mold. The traditional molding systems do not become adjusted to this purpose. Then, the creation process starts with the modular source selection of the sculpture. In some cases, it can be made a rudimental model with plasticine, paper or matches. After that, this basic model is developed on the computer supported by a CAD program. It is a slow operation.
The next step is passing the virtual model to the physical object. It requires a process named 3D printing -- which can be made on several ways. The most common is the model construction by layers or sections on a wax block. Then, the conventional techniques of molding and foundry start by the method known as "Lost-wax casting". The piece gets finished with the surface oxidation and polish.

Pavlodar tube-rolling plant is situated in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. The tubes, manufactured here, are used in gas pipelines, water supply systems, heating, sewage, different boiler installations, irrigation systems and many other things. The blanks for the plant are supplied by Pavlodar steel works.

Pipe manufacturing process consists of the following stages: hot rolling, where blank gets cut, heated and rolled till it becomes of the needed size and form.

Then, if needed, the pipe undergoes heat treatment or just goes to the quality testing line.

What you see here is obviously key. What differs this particular one from some other key is that with a turn of this key the most powerful machine built by human genius in our modern times was awaken to life. This is the key from Russian space rockets, thousand tons monsters carrying tons of cargo weight to the Russian space station “MIR” which is sunk in pacific now.

Such keys were a real artefact amongst engineers participating in the launches and there was a long line of those who wanted to

get the next one as a present.

Those things are the actual dashboards in which the key had to be inserted and turned on in order to initiate the start sequence. After it was initiated nothing could stop it. You can see how the metal around keyhole has moltened and blackened – they had to have very high voltages there – but what else would you expect during those glorious times they didn’t save on energy.

Also this key was a symbol of Russian town Leninsk, or Baikonur as it was called later – the place in what we now know as Kazakhstan from where most of the Soviet rockets were launched. The people of the city put the drawing of this key to the Leninsk coats of arms.

A strip coal mine “Bogatyr” had been built by 1969 in Ekibastuz, Kazakhstan. In 1985 it reached its highest annual production level – 56.8 million tons of coal. The strip mine of such a high production capacity has been built for the first time in the world and, because of this factor, in 1985 it was put into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Metallurgical Silicon Production

The Silicium factory in Kazakhstan produces metallurgical silicon in a special way using special ore heat-treating furnaces. This is one of the biggest factories in the whole country and the only one specializing in this field.

Silicon is the second most plentiful element of the Earth’s crust after oxygen. It is commonly found in the combinations with silica and silicate. Pure silicon is used in various semiconductor devices and metallurgy.

2 types of products are made here: metal silicon (used in aluminium and chemical fields) and silicon dust (used in production of extra-strong dry building mixtures).

Silicon of technical purity (up to 99.9%) is made at a temperature of 1800 C insideÂ the ore heat-treating furnaces (the main admixtures are carbon and metals).

The fireproof furnace is a kind of a round steel outer cover with a bottom lined up with fire bricks.

Power supply is maintained by an electrode which is made of graphite and connected with a furnace transformer, energized by the low-voltage circuit.

Silicon is being constantly delivered through a special hole into the steel moulds.

The process of the silicon reduction is taking place inside the furnace with the shunted arc. The temperature here is about 1670 C. The main types of reducers include coal and charcoal (birch and pine).

After having been molten inside the furnace, silica goes to the scoop and then is slopped into the moulds.

Today it’s the only furnace which is in use at this factory but one more is going to start its work very soon. All the end products are exported to the European Union.

By the way, the metallurgic silicon market value is â‚¬ 2500 per ton.

The factory uses a lot of energy for maintaining the temperature inside the furnace (it’s working 24 hours a day). When it was activated for the first time, it took 2 weeks to reach the necessary limit of temperature.

It is an absolute basis for the high-tech industry. Silicon is photocells for solar cell batteries, semiconductors for computers and many other useful things.

The silicon production is absolutely non wasteful.

After getting hard silicon is broken up into small pieces with the help of a special hammer.

And after that finished products are packed into big bags (containing 1 ton of silicon) and sent to customers.
