Margaret Roe, orphaned at the age of eight, lives her life in the same orphanage where her father was forced to leave her when he went off to fight in the Civil War. Now, fifteen years later, she takes care of the present set of children who are in the orphanage and has only a visit to the local confectionery shop as the highlight of her week.

Margaret makes an uncharacteristically bold move and signs on as a mail order bride and quickly finds herself on a train to Iowa City, Iowa where she becomes Mrs. Russell Chadwick.
Margaret’s marriage is by no means usual as her husband is kind but distant.

As she builds relationships with her neighbors and even her in-laws, her relationship with her husband remains confusing, emotionally hurtful and a test of her faith and trust in God and her husband. How does she know what God really wants her to do? Should she stay with Russell or leave him and begin yet again?

This is author Kimberly Gordon’s third published historical novel. While the characters and settings reflect well the history and mores of the time, the reader can easily draw insight into contemporary life lessons. Mrs. Gordon is a master at laying down biblical principles within the context of the story.

Fifty Shades of Grace provides a scriptural look at what the Bible says about love and relationships. Too often when we offer education about relationships, if abusive and unhealthy relationships are discussed, it is not done so with enough depth.

This book will compare what society tells us, in the form of entertainment and media, with what God tells us in the Bible about what healthy and loving relationships are. It will explore what abuse is and why many of us are in abusive relationships and what we can do about it.

“I hope this book helps people not to fall into the trap of harmful relationships.” — Shauna Hyde, author.

Reviews of Fifty Shades of Grace:

Rev. Hyde dispels a number of romantic myths that pervade relationships today. From Grimm’s to Grey, she explains how these fairy tales inhibit our ability to find supportive, healthy relationships, romantic and otherwise. She goes a step farther and asks deceptively simple questions at the end of each chapter which provoke thought and emotional growth and offer a means of exploring how to improve nearly all relationships. She respectfully confronts the conventional “wisdom” of Biblical teachings and clarifies the meaning behind often misused verses. For those who seek a faith-based exploration of the dynamics of dysfunctional relationships, and suggestions how to improve one’s self and one’s interactions with others, this volume is ideal.

Ariana J. Kincaid, Violence Against Women Resource Prosecutor, West Virginia Prosecuting Attorneys Institute

God knows what we need to hear and when we need to hear it. This book is exactly what I needed! 50 Shades of Grace helps establish healthy ways to love and be loved. I want my teenagers to read it, my husband and a long list of friends. It is a God-inspired guide to show us characteristics of real love, and a warning if we are in an unhealthy relationship. This little book is packed with wonderful advice and scripture. It is a must read for everyone. A great group study or individual read.

Kimberly Gordon, author It’s in the Bag and Please Love Me, Pensacola, FL

With his Hierarchy of Needs, Abraham Maslow emphasized the fundamental need that we humans have to be in relationship with each other. Our need for love and belonging is preceded only by our most basic survival and safety needs. It is within these relationships that we can experience our greatest joys and our most devastating losses. Relationships are not all good or bad, not all joy or sorrow, rather they exist on a spectrum of ebb and flow, give and take.

In 50 Shades of Grace, Shauna Hyde reminds us that healthy lasting relationships are not the result of fairy tales and happenstance. To love and be loved is not passive but requires intention. Shauna helps us to discover and define our unspoken expectations, our unmet needs and our secret payoffs. Does our Christianity smooth the path along our way or have we turned it into an obstacle? By expertly challenging myths with scripture, Shauna lifts the veil that separates reality and fantasy revealing a spiritual path that empowers us to create the lasting and loving relationships that we desire.

Felicia L. Bush, MA, Director of Medical Services, WV Family Support and Rehabilitation Services

Love is no fairy tale. It is something far more challenging, more beautiful, and more rewarding than all that… just like Rev. Shauna Hyde’s inspired new work,50 Shades of Grace. We may all be cracked vessels, but Rev. Hyde draws from scripture, Niebhur, Cinderella, and her own experience to present us with a map for navigating the treacherous waters of romance, love, and even abuse. If you are truly in love with someone, or if you someday want to be, this book is for you.

Christians are not on a mission for God; his church is on his mission – the mission of bringing the grace of Christ to sinners; the mission of bringing the whole world into obedience to Christ; and the mission of covering the earth with the knowledge of the glory of God in Christ Jesus. Being on God’s mission means following Jesus into the darkest places of the world to bring the good news of the total redeeming work of Christ. Leading reformed thinkers including Tim Keller, Thomas Schirrmacher, P. J. Buys, Diane Langberg, John Leonard, Basyle Tchividjian, John Freeman, and many others, demonstrate why and how the church must be on God’s mission of bringing grace, holiness, compassion, and justice to a world of sin and suffering.

Founded in 1992, Finish Line Ministries International (FLMI) exists for the purpose of Training Pastors, Equipping The Church, Providing For Orphans, and Reaching the Lost. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, FLMI annually ministers to more than 100,000 people in the USA and Africa.

In a practical sense, the primary work of FLMI takes place in the United States of America, as well as the southeast African nations of Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Over the years, the Lord has used the work of FLMI to reach tens of thousands of people with the Gospel.

USA

FLMI partners with churches, youth ministries, camps, conferences, colleges, and schools to present the truth of God’s Word in a way that is powerful, practical and relevant. Often utilized as guest speakers for special events, FLMI’s speaking team offers a unique style and has a proven track record of service and effectiveness.

Over the years, the Lord has blessed FLMI’s preaching and outreach efforts as thousands of people have made life-changing commitments to Jesus Christ.

Africa

In 2000, the Lord opened the door for FLMI to partner with a Malawian pastor by the name of Love Kaphesi for the purpose of training pastors and planting churches in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
At the time, Love had already planted 66 churches and had a combined congregation of more than 10,000 people. Though his churches were growing, he recognized the need for his pastors to be trained
in basic Bible doctrine and church leadership. He turned to FLMI and asked for help. From this initial request, the framework for Finish Line Ministries Africa (FLM Africa) was formed.

Over the years, churches and friends of FLMI have prayed for and financially supported the work in Africa. Routinely, teams from the USA have traveled to Malawi to train pastors and preach the Gospel. Thousands of people have come to know Christ. Christians have grown in their faith. New churches have been planted. Orphans have received care and pastors have been trained.
Today, there are more than 80,000 people attending 243 FLM Africa churches in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. In addition, a pastors Bible school trains pastors and an orphanage and day school cares for and educates 300 orphans each year. To God be the glory!

While striving to find meaning amid the mundane and ordinary, many women find themselves swallowed up by culture’s expectations, trying to escape the labels that trap and define them. But Aimee Byrd is determined to reclaim terms like housewife, which have divided many women, to unite them instead in their common calling.

What is this calling, and how can women rise above what the world offers? By taking back another term—theologian—and knowing God intimately. Aimee will help you evaluate your Christian life and see your world form a different perspective.

About the Author

Aimee Byrd is just an ordinary mom of three living i Martinsburg, West Virginia. Aside from that amazing gig, Aimee has made a fool of herself in martial arts training, survived college, dabbled in ceramics, owned a coffee shop, braved leading the youth group with her husband, become a Bible study teacher and blogger, and done a little speaking on the side. Since her children’s schedules have majorly cut into her social life, she has resorted to writing.

They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides!

In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer’s Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother’s death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother’s most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture.

What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational ‘tell-all’ book about the Amish. Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley.

She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood—and her potential betrayal of her community—keep her from committing her whole heart?

The stereotype may not be accurate, but there are those who fit this description, not to mention many who leave home for college as passionate Christians and come home unbelievers. More importantly, that stereotype represents a fear—the fear that too much education or contact with those whose beliefs differ from those of a particular community will cause someone to lose their faith.

But there’s another group, much larger, but not heard nearly as frequently. This group consists of people who have gone from the position of fear that creates the stereotype to a position of faith, a faith that is no longer afraid of that outer darkness that looms outside the walls of their religious community. Indeed, they may not perceive any looming darkness at all.

From Fear to Faith, edited by Travis Milam and Joel L. Watts, gives voice to that too often unheard group. It is a collection of essays from those who have lived in fear, have faced the looming dark, collided with their share of brick walls, but have come out with a new-found faith and undismayed trust.

The journeys of faith presented in this book reveal a group deeply insightful and grounded minds, rich in thriving spirituality, joy, and hope. Where there was once trepidation in asking the tough questions of human existence, of the divine relationship with creation, there is now a certain hope found when these authors have struggled to overcome canyons of fear, leaving behind a life of black and white certitude, to live in a beautiful world of gray.

They have learned that having questions and even doubts does not reflect a lack of faith. Rather, hiding in fear from the serious questions indicates a lack of faith in the one who said, “Don’t be afraid.”

Come join in this journey from fear to faith.

Milam, Travis

Travis Milam has a B.A. degree in History from Alderson-Broaddus College. He is currently preparing to begin working toward a Master of Divinity degree and pastoral ministry within the United Methodist Church. He loves history, theology, music (The Statler Brothers, The Beatles and The Who are favorites), being with his two sons and working to help people realize the grace of God. This is his first venture in writing for publication.

Watts, Joel L

Joel L. Watts holds a Masters of Arts from United Theological Seminary. His interests include literary criticism of the New Testament and exploring early Christian theology. As a future Deacon in the UMC, his ministry will be to recovering fundamentalists who are breaking through spiritual prisons. Joel is also the author of Mimetic Criticism of the Gospel of Mark: Introduction and Commentary (Wipf and Stock). He and his family now attend Christ United Methodist in Charleston, West Virginia, a church they dearly love.
