Nobody's Fault But Mine - James 1:13-15

When we do wrong things, there's a tendency to place the blame on anyone or anything but us: our spouses, our parents, our upbringing, our ethnicity, the Devil, or even God himself. In reality, the blame belongs to us and us alone. The sooner we realize and believe that, the sooner we can see that our own sin leads us to death, while God leads us to live through Jesus Christ.

Mother's Day 2008 - Psalm 139:1-18

Greg unpacks Psalm 139 (with some context from the creation account in Genesis) to show the beauty, tragedy, and irony inherent in motherhood, and how Christ transforms both mothers and children through the Gospel.

Only Jesus Breaks The Power Of Legalism - Colossians 2:16-23

le-gal-ism (LEE-guh-liz-uhm) [n.]:
1) An attempt to save ourselves by our own moral or religious effort
2) Placing our identity in our moral or religious performance, belonging to the "right" religious group (or subgroup, or sub-subgroup)
3) Trusting in religion, rather than Christ, to provide what we need for life and our connection with God

Just as there were some in the Colossian church who were trying to tell others that they were somehow "disqualified" to receive God's love and care, there are often voices telling us the same. Maybe it's because of what we wear or what we eat or drink, and the voices can come from varied sources -- other people, churches, even ourselves. Regardless, believing this can cause us to rely on some outward action -- not Christ -- to re-connect us with God. The Apostle Paul warns us against these things, assuring us that in Christ, God has already qualified us.

Roots Down, Wings Up - Colossians 2:6-7

For Christians, there's a constant danger of being swept away, captured by false teachings and false philosophies that surround us in the world, and that crop up in our own hearts and minds -- falsehoods that oppose the Gospel which we've been taught and which we believe. The Apostle Paul warned the Colossian church -- and us -- of these very things.

Because only Christ can save us from being swept away, we must be rooted and established in him. Only then can our spiritual lives take the upward trajectory -- the wings -- promised in Scripture.

Dear Church, Jesus Really Is Enough! - Colossians 1:9-14

Like so many of us today, the Christians in Colossae often wondered if Jesus -- if the Gospel they had come to believe in -- was really enough to meet their needs, not only for eternity, but for the here and now.

This week, we look at verses 9 through 14 of Colossians 1 and see that Paul tells them (and us) that yes, Christ provides everything we need, and we can ask God with confidence for everything that he has already provided to us.

Dear Church, Look How You've Grown! (Part A) - Colossians 1:1-8

The church in Colossae shared quite a bit in common with us at Grace Central. They were a relatively new church, living in a pluralistic society with all sorts of viewpoints, religions, and philosophies that competed with Christ for their allegiance. In his letter to the Colossian church, the Apostle Paul assures them that Christ is more than enough to meet their needs.

What's Important to God? What's Important to Grace Central?

Here we make a brief departure from our series in Romans to get back to a couple of basic questions: as a church, who are we and why are we here? Why does this city need yet another church? We look at Acts 14 and see that the local church is the hope of the world (and by necessity, of the city).

But What About "Free Will"? - Romans 9:1-5

The question of predestination inevitably brings up the question “but what about ‘free will’”. The answer is this: “yes, God does have free will.”

There is no "Plan B" - Romans 8:28-30

“Predestination.”

The word by itself is enough to evoke strongly negative and positive reactions from an equal number of people. But what is predestination? What does the Bible have to say about it, and what does it mean for the Christian and the Church? Can the idea of predestination actually be of comfort?

This week, we take a look at Romans 8:28-30, where Paul delivers the comforting news to the Roman church that they are among God’s chosen people, forever secure in Christ.

Adopted Children Can Face Life Fearlessly - Romans 8:14-18

In Romans 8:14-18, Paul encourages the Roman church with the news that they have been adopted as true children of God. As God’s people today, we can take this same encouragement, knowing that our loving Father protects us through suffering, provides for us through our failings, and accepts us though others may reject us. We can face life without fear.

Romans 7:7-25

Contrary to some of our hopes, becoming a Christian does not automatically and fully remove the influence of sin on our lives. Likewise, our forgiveness isn’t a license to remain in our sin-infested state. In the second part of Romans 7, the Apostle Paul writes about our sanctification — our being made holy in Christ — and how it is an “already/not yet” reality. “Already” in the sense that we have been made holy in God’s sight; “not yet” in the sense that sin, while no longer our master, still rears its ugly head if it’s given the opportunity.

Thanks be to God, he’s still working on us.
